I feel like I might have posted about this already but I wanted to be sure and share a link to a podcast I appeared on recently! I went on my friend EJ’s show FEDTalks as part of his series on 1- and 2-season TV shows. Ostensibly we spoke about Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham’s first TV show “Best Friends Forever” but our discussion veered into their next effort “Playing House” and other Jess-and-Len-related items! Please have a listen wherever you get podcasts.

For the Great News girlies, EJ also did an ep on that show with his friend (and now mine) Hayley: https://fedtalks.podbean.com/e/episode-81-great-news-with-hayley/
Hayley also returned for a Best of 2022 TV ep that is not to be missed: https://fedtalks.podbean.com/e/episode-92-the-best-tv-shows-of-2022-with-hayley/

Parham House and Gardens in West Sussex
Parham Park is an Elizabethan house and estate in the civil parish of Parham, west of the village of Cootham between Storrington and Pulborough in West Sussex. It is a great place to visit and we have visited it on many occasions including with some of our friend families from within Brighton and Hove. It is a home that provided people during World War 2 and it has a lovely range of locations…

So excited to announce the launch of my project [unhurried] {witness}!
A curation of digital memories, this piece was created under my mentor, Marisa Parham, during the 2022-2023 Scholar-Artist Residency Program of the African American History, Culture, and Digital Humanities (AADHum) Initiative at the University of Maryland (UMD).
[unhurried] {witness} was conceived during lockdown to explore Black play as a form of healing and collective witness of Black American culture, and was envisioned as MySpace meets Tumblr meets your Grandma’s house; ASMR for the soul; community memory exercise; interfacing intimacy; an archive of play; and, ultimately, an ephemeral object of cultural witness.
✨slow play as ritual/alchemization of emotions + analog experiences in a digital space✨
More inspirations included:
-web 1.0
-Covid play
-inside/outside
-adulthood/childhood
-play/work
To experience and explore the project, click here: https://unhurried-witness.aadhum.org.
Designed to be interactive, a series of questions on your memories of the digital experience can be found here and here. All answers will be recorded anonymously and displayed in the guestbook here.
Statement from the African American History, Culture, and Digital Humanities Initiative at University of Maryland on the project:
Welcome [unhurried] {witness}!
Seren Sensei’s #BlackDH project creates a “a digital exploration and a visual representation of analog games such as card games, dice, dominoes, paper crafts, and rhyming hand games/hand motions, as healing cultural process among Black Americans.”
✨ You can learn more about [unhurried] {witness} at https://aadhum-news.umd.edu/unhurried-witness/

Rules: List 10 of your comfort shows, then tag 10 people
I don't think I have 10 but here are some favorites in no particular ranking...
The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross. Very soothing. Very encouraging. I remember being absolutely captivated as a child.
Making It (a very light hearted, good natured crafting competition with Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman as hosts. It's delightful.)
Parks and Recreation (Also featuring Nick and Amy) I've watched this one a lot.
Playing House. (It's a show about two lifelong best friends raising a baby after the expectant mother of the duo finds out her husband has been having an affair. Jessica St Clair and Lennon Parham are the leads. Keegan Michael Key is also in it, not as the cheating husband).
Gilmore Girls. There's something about an idyllic small town setting with quirky neighbors and a very specific festival every few weeks.
Ted Lasso. I haven't rewatched this one but I do love it. Heartwarming stuff.
Great British Bake Off. I watched this a lot when my little one was an infant and I was on the feeding clock every two hours, 24/7. The challenges were just the right length of time for me to keep track of minimizing spit up risks, kind of know how long I'd been out of bed, etc. It kept me semi-sane during a very sleep deprived time in my life.
Good Eats with Alton Brown. My mom and I would watch cooking shows on Fridays together when I was in college and this was our go to. Informative, quirky, pun filled, and delicious.

#FMSpotlight: LaRussell & Guapdad 4000 - "F*ck 12 Freestyle" (Listen)
Tumblr media
LaRussell and Guapdad 4000's "F*ck 12 Freestyle" knocks the judicial system off its pedestal. Armored with factual wordplay and commanding deliveries, the rappers expose the ones who barely gave them a shot. First, LaRussell cruises on the beat, depicting how these pretentious "heroes" weren't around from the get-go.  Lines like "the house ain't a home when it's vacant/tryna fry a pig I smell bacon" summarize their hostility toward law enforcement. Given the environment, LaRussell and his peers worked hard to live comfortably. In the rappers' words, "Puttin in work before they paid us by the hour." Navigating through almost a war zone in a neighborhood can make it difficult to prosper. Still, the rappers prove otherwise. "Came out the mud they lookin' at me in amazement," LaRussell raps. Before closing the verse, he wonders why others pray for his downfall.  Often, there's a 9 to 5 lifestyle others must adhere to, but in Guapdad 4000's case, he became his own boss. Following this, he highlights the importance of persevering. Stressing that grinding equates to comfortable living, he raps "beat the pen up til it pans out." Elsewhere, Guapdad 4000 addresses the gentrification that's progressing in urban areas.  He raps, "I remember when the town had a few new people/I get tacos/Look around like 'who you people?'/Blame the banks approving y'all for them cafes/That's why they bip sh*t and drive off the backway."  "F*ck 12 Freestyle" is the first single from the upcoming album Tales Of The Town.  The record accompanies a podcast that shares the name and explores the history and culture of Black Oakland through the eyes and ears of its inhabitants. Each episode focuses on different specific topics and will be released on a weekly basis for 12 weeks.  Created by community organizers Abbas Muntaqim and Delency Parham, this multimedia project and its importance has touched the hearts of all the Bay Area artists that are featured on the upcoming album, including G-Eazy, 22nd Jim, ALLBLACK and Rexx Life Raj, and prompted them to donate their verses for free with all proceeds being funneled back into People’s Programs. Why Every Homeowner Needs to Understand Roofing Repair
Every homeowner inevitably faces the need for a roofing repair at some point. The roof endures harsh weather conditions and works tirelessly to protect your home's interior, but how many people really understand the finer details of this essential service? Let us delve into the ins and outs of roofing repairs to be well-prepared when that leaky roof or wind damage strikes in the future.
Importance of Roofing Repairs
Roofs can experience different types of damage, including wear and tear from age, harsh weather conditions, pest invasions, and fallen tree branches. Whatever the circumstances may be, professional roofing repair services are critical to maintaining your home structurally sound and safe.
Prompt repairs ensure that minor issues do not escalate into major problems requiring more costly solutions. Furthermore, efficiently rectifying any damages keeps your home attractive and contributes towards preserving its value.
Common Types of Roof Damage
Typical culprits causing roof damages include wind storms that dislodge shingles, hailstones leaving behind pockmarks on the roof surface rendering it susceptible to leaks and water intrusion, excessive sun exposure leading to fading or warping shingles. Similarly, accumulated snow can lead to ice dams forming damaging gutters and triggering leaks inside your house.
On occasion, careless installation or use of low-quality materials in initial construction can also lead to premature degradation requiring immediate roofing repair attention. These myriad causes underlying necessary roof repairs underscore why familiarity with such issues is beneficial for homeowners.
Understanding The Repair Process
Having identified a problem with your roof does not automatically mean you will need an entirely new one. Experienced roofing contractors can assess whether a simple repair would suffice or if an entire replacement is required based on the extent of damages encountered.
The repair process typically includes inspecting the problem area, removing damaged materials while salvaging what remains viable use, replacing the faulty components, and sealing everything to ensure that the roofing system provides solid protection again. The type and extent of damage influences what specific repairs will be conducted.
Choosing a Roofing Repair Contractor
When engaging contractors for repair works, it’s crucial to choose wisely. Look for licensed professionals with excellent customer reviews, extensive experience in handling different types of roofing damages, transparent pricing policies, and those who stand behind their work with quality warranties.
While cost plays a role in decision-making, sacrificing quality for cheaper quotes may wind up costing more in repairs required sooner than expected.
Conclusion : The importance of consistent vigilance
Homeowners need not be experts at performing actual roof repairs, but understanding all goes into the field can facilitate regular inspections leading towards early troubleshooting hence maintaining sound roofs over time. Proper balance between DIY maintenance efforts and enlisting professional help when warranted can greatly prolong the lifespan of your roof while shielding your home against potential water damage or other adverse effects caused by malfunctioning or deteriorated roofs.
Whatever roofing troubles you encounter remember this essential job reserved for well-equipped experts ensuring high-quality results keeping safe our most cherished investment - Our homes!

Saturday Morning Coffee
Good morning from Charlottesville, Virginia! ☕️
Tumblr media
Another week and month in the books. We’ve crossed into February and Punxsutawney Phil says six more weeks of winter. I’m ok with that. Coffees ready, let’s get going.

Carl Weathers, linebacker-turned-actor who starred in ‘Rocky’ movies and ‘The Mandalorian,’ dies
I remember seeing Rocky as a kid and I didn’t much like Apollo Creed. He was arrogant, cocky, and besides, the star of the show was Rocky, the underdog. Of course they eventually became friends and I liked him then.
I loved him as Al Dillon in Preditor and as Chubbs in Happy Gilmore.

NASCAR: Full Speed Is Coming to Your Screen at 200 Miles per Hour
I blew through the five episode season in a couple days. Why’d they only order up five episodes in the first season? I mean, F1: Drive to Survive has had 10 episode since season 1.
They focused on the playoffs but they could’ve done more leading into the playoffs. It’s a long season full of drama and I wanted more.
Overall it was really good and I hope we get a full 10 episodes in season 2.

Define all your data in Pkl, and generate output for JSON, YAML, Property Lists, and other configuration formats.
Pkl is an Apple project. They’re trying to become a services company and having a better means of managing things sounds like a good idea.
It’s odd to see Apple using Java and Kotlin for this but it does make sense given it’s meant to be portable to different platforms. And by different platforms I mean actual different platforms like Linux, Windows, and Mac. Not Mac, iPhone, and iPad. 😄

Black Twitter Remains Unbothered in Elon Musk’s X
I’ve seen folks on Mastodon talking about how difficult it is for Black Mastodon to get started.
When I setup Curmudgeon Cafe there was a large contingent — and still is — of LGBTQ+ instances.
If memory serves it was more a matter of discoverability.
I’d love to see multiple BIPOC instances spring. We need more diversity, not less.

My current effort is slightly different: how to build a native iPadOS (and hopefully VisionOS) experience for Godot. So rather than rewriting the existing Editor codebase with Swift, this effort is about making a SwiftUI on top of the existing Editor.
I don’t keep up with Godot but I do keep up with Miguel. It’ll be fun to watch his effort evolve into a finished product.

Texas' standoff with the feds in Eagle Pass is igniting calls for secession and fears of violence
The MAGA crazed are ready for war and his orangeness is egging them on. Not only that he’s actively working with leaders in the House and Senate to blow up a bipartisan bill that would be the best deal the GOP has seen on the border. All to get that orange dumbass re-elected.

It’s 2024, and I’m here to extol the virtues of using an RSS reader.
Of course everyone should use an RSS reader! Might I recommend Stream for iOS? 😘

Man oh man would I love to have a national healthcare system that’s fully integrated and lets me manage how I interact with doctors and other healthcare providers.
I’d like it to work like Facebook. Doctors should invite me to join, or I invite them to join, my medical record.
American Healthcare is still stuck in the past. I’d love to see it fixed.

Spotify accuses Apple of ‘extortion’ with new App Store tax
Spotify and others didn’t get what they really wanted. They don’t want to pay a single cent to Apple. Which from a business perspective makes perfect sense.
Guess we’ll see what the law says.
Aki Ito • Business Insider
In the two years I’ve been writing about Americans' changing relationship to work, there’s one theme that’s come up over and over again: loyalty. Whether my stories are about quiet quitting, or job-hopping, or leveraging a job offer from a competitor to force your boss to give you a raise, readers seem to divide into two groups.
There are so many factors to loyalty. The true believers exist and they have little to fear. Then there are the masses who quietly do their jobs and aren’t really seen.
We had a layoff at work last May and it destroyed morale, destroyed the company culture, and left loyalty at an all time low.
I hate to be so cynical but companies aren’t there for you. They’re there to make profit. Loyalty from the company only extends so far to the employee.
I still love my job and work hard at it everyday but I fear being laid off.
Jakub Porzycki • The Verge
Microsoft says Apple’s new App Store rules are ‘a step in the wrong direction’
Of course they think it’s going in the wrong direction! They’re a huge corporation in the business of selling software. They don’t want to hand any of it over to Apple.
Epic’s Tim Sweeney referred to it as “Malicious Compliance.”
Get out the popcorn! 🍿
Vadim Kravcenko
New libraries. New languages. New Frameworks. New Intern coming in and thinking he can rewrite better parts of the code himself. It’s easy to get swept away. But is the newest framework always the best choice? Is a rewrite really going to make everything better? Or is there wisdom in the code that has been around for years, has been tested with crazy edge cases, and has evolved together with the business?
I understand why folks are tempted to rewrite thing, I really do. When I wasn’t a dinosaur of a developer I hand that tendency. “I can make this better”, my brain would say. Sure, there’s occasion to “turn the soil” once in a while and I believe that’s good for a code base. But a full rewrite? No. 🌹
Nikita Prokopov
As you can see, even the checkmark wasn’t always there. But one thing remained constant: checkboxes were square.
A square checkbox is something us old timers are accustomed to seeing and changes can be confusing.
The Vision Pro’s checkboxes are confusing but I kind of like UIKit’s toggles as long as you don’t go crazy styling them. 😃
Nilay Patel • The Verge
It sounds amazing, and sometimes it is. But the Vision Pro also represents a series of really big tradeoffs — tradeoffs that are impossible to ignore. Some of those tradeoffs are very tangible: getting all this tech in a headset means there’s a lot of weight on your face, so Apple chose to use an external battery pack connected by a cable. But there are other, more philosophical tradeoffs as well.
I think Nilay did a great job balancing his review of Vision Pro.
It’s a great start but has a really long way to go as a general computing device. That’s my opinion having never used one.
I really believe we’ll get a sense for how we should be using it if we see pictures of Apple Executives wearing it daily to do their jobs. I kind of doubt we’ll see that for anything other than articles written about it.
The iPhone, Watch, and AirPods are devices those same executives probably use everyday. I just can’t see them using Vision Pro as much.
When/if they’re ever able to make them look like regular glasses and they cost around $500-800 I’d consider wearing them all the time. Until then they’re way too expensive for my blood. I would rather spend that kind of green on a new MacBook Pro.
Will Stream support Vision Pro? I think so. I have no idea when, but I think it will.
