Postcards from Snagglepuss
So Duluth was meant to be laughed at, no?
ON THE SKYLINE PARKWAY IN DULUTH, MN: The motorhome whence Huckleberry Hound and yours truly have decided to continue our everlasting road trip is parked close to the Engler Tower, itself a landmark of Duluth as much as the Aerial Bridge in Duluth Harbour, essentially THE only access between downtown and Park Point. And sipping coffee besides as we drink in a somewhat misty view unto Duluth's downtown below.
"Uh, Huck--did I tell you about the one time I found the CB Bears and reconnected with them practically in this same spot in the parking lot?"
"I think the memory escapes me on that point, Snag," Huck remarked as he took another drag on the coffee--which turned out being the Arco brand, a well-known local such in the Twin Ports and the North Shore regions.
"It was early on in my road trip experiences. Not exactly Route 66, to be honest about it, but the Mini Cooper was my vehicle of choice ... I was driving along the Skyline Parkway, just drinking in the view as we are now ... and just near the Engler Tower, even, I couldn't help but notice the trio of Hustle, Bump and Boogie."
"THEY were the CB Bears, Snag?"
"You had best believe it, recall them, even!" Which had Huckleberry Hound chuckling a modest bit. "Shucks ... how easily yours truly, being one of the earliest of us Funtastics, forgets newer stuff like the CB Bears. Were they those bears named for disco dance moves?"
"Correct, Huck, correct. At any rate, yours truly could not help but be surprised at such a meeting, and with their Perfume Wagon still managing to hold on with the proverbial baling wire ... even though the cases they got from 'Charlie' seemed few and far between."
"So what are they nowadays doing?"
"Huck, that ursine trio happens to be into fishing, and serving their catch on cedarwood planks. But later on, after we met, they decided to try some surfing in as unlikely a spot as on Lake Superior. Up by Palmers, even, along the Lake Superior Scenic Drive--"
"You mean to tell me, Snagglepuss," Huck remarked, "that people can actually surf in such otherwise chilly waters as on Lake Superior?!"
"Correct. And not long afterward, Hustle let me in on a little secret ... that he was originally from along the Gunflint Trail. Out of Grand Marais, even!"
"So where were Bump and Boogie from, if I may ask?"
"Bump turned out to be from somewhere near Yellowstone, having managed to escape from a rather intense forest fire ... and Boogie was originally from Alaska himself!"
"Rather amazing, these backstories we all have. And you wonder if many of us have stumbled on Breezly Bruin, understood, naturally enough, to be from Nome, Alaska."
"Have you seen Underwater America with Peter Potamus, Huck?"
"Snag, now that you mention it--I have. And I couldn't help but find Breezly Bruin looking rather crazy in diver's gear. Even if, as a polar bear, he manages to otherwise dive rather well breathhold."
Stepping out of our motorhome and into the parking lot, the mist had started to clear somewhat to allow for that impressive view down upon Duluth ... even enough to notice another vessel or two crossing under the Aerial Bridge heading outbound. Leaving me to ponder to myself just why "Duluth" was among those names that still brought down the house on the Orpheum Circuit in vaudeville's zenith (and I could still picture George and Joey Bungle trying to generate laughs with the sheer mention of "Duluth").

I'm not sure if you reblogged the post you sent me numbers from but I'll send you the whole questions just in case
12. What are your favorite music genres?
29. What's your dream date? (either with a partner or a friend date)
!!!!!!!!!
12. I say this a lot but I'm not really picky music wise - I tend to be a rock/punk kind of person but I also really enjoy jazz. I played trombone for 11 years and I was in jazz bands for a lot of that time... I miss it lol. The only thing I'm not a fan of is rap (nothing against it as an art form, it's just not my thing).
29. I went to duluth, MN a lot as a kid, and I have a lot of fond memories up there; my dream date would be going and spending a weekend exploring the lakeshore, especially Tettegouche State Park and Jay Cooke State Park.
(I actually was lucky enough to convince my ex to go a couple years ago; though we did more of the touristy stuff, Glensheen and Park Point and the like, it really was everything I hoped for. We've broken up since but we're still on good terms so it's a good memory ^^)

Northeast MN Work/Fishing Trip, St. Louis River, Lake Superior & Mille Lacs, 7/25/22 - 7/29/22
If I am pulling my boat around northern or central MN, it's usally 100% for fun. Not this week however. I had a 4 day worktrip that involved meeting staff from various hospitals and clinics across NE and Central MN. I had a jam packed week driving location to location, so I did what any fisherman would do; piggyback a fishing trip on a work trip , and trailer the boat behind my office on wheels. Afterall, I was visiting some areas with tremendous fisheries, and I just couldn't resist spending my evenings on the water.
My first stop was Duluth, where I stayed at Pier B resort. I love Pier B because of it's location and access to the water. While I didn't rent an overnight slip (I felt more comfortable with the boat trailered in the parking lot), I did use the private access ramp to launch my boat.
Tumblr media
I had always wanted to fish the St. Louis River, Duluth Harbor and Lake Superior. The thought of boating the Great Lakes was quite daunting, until today. Winds were calm, the sun was brilliant, and from what I could tell (from my hotel room), there was literally no boat traffic. This gave me a newfound confidence.
Tumblr media
But I, and the size of my boat were humbled very quickly upon leaving Pier B's protected cove. Between the 1,000 foot transport vessels and Viking Octantis Cruise Ship, I had the smallest and most vulnerable boat in these waters.
Tumblr media
My head was on a swivel watching the navigation buoys, my GPS and keeping tabs on all the floating freighters. There was a lot more watching going on than fishing.
It didn't take me long to realize I didn't want to fish around all the industrial traffic in the Duluth Harbor. I found myself way up the St. Louis River looking for smallmouth.
Unfortunately for me, the water was VERY low, and I really couldn't access much of the backwaters, known for smallmouth fishing. Instead I focused on bridge pilings and some deeper holes on the river turns. I was able to pick up some small brown fish and a couple pike, but nothing of size. Disappointing, because I was really hoping to find a pile of them in the harbor and river.
I had several work appointments over the next two days that kept me off the water, so I was really excited on Thursday after I wrapped up in St. Cloud. Because it was off to Mille Lacs.
Tumblr media
I got camp all setup and headed straight out to the lake. And fishing was awful. Not a single bite It had been a super long day, so I headed back to camp and turned in early. as I was falling asleep, I heard this sound that I could only describe as what sounded like an electrical storm. There was this loudly buzzing/crackling that was relentless for over an hour. At some point I fell asleep, not knowing what it was.
Friday morning, I spent a few hours on a perfectly slick lake without so much as even a bite. What was going on?? Duluth fishing had been bad, and now Mille Lacs? There had recently been a fly hatch, and there were fly carcasses littering the water. That was probably the issue. The fish had all the bug food they wanted and had probably gorged themselves to the point of not being hungry.
I headed back to came to meet Dyan, who arrived with with pups around 10AM. I was surprised to see so many fish flies. They were swarming the tent, the dogs, the vehicles. They were everywhere. We took the dogs on a nice afternoon boat ride, with the lake still perfectly slick.
I did a little fishing, Dyan a little reading. the dogs a little sleeping. It was the most relaxing afternoon. That is, until Moose caught a glimpse of a the hundreds of pelicans and cormorants dotting Hennepin Island.
Tumblr media
Without even a warning, Moosey jumped up from a dead slumber, bellowing out the deepest coon dog roar. I know he's AKC purebread lab, but I swear, he has some hound deep in his lineage. And with that, Moose soared off the back of the boat swimming toward the island. I panicked. We were about 50 yards from the island, so there was no way he could swim that far, and once he got there, what was he going to do? He wouldn't listen to Dyan and I yelling at him to come to the boat. I turned the trolling motor on high and thought it would be best to try and motor between him and the island and see if we could get him in the boat. But in the process Ranger started freaking out and yelping because Moose was in the lake. And obviously the birds weren't real thrilled with a lab swimming right toward them, so they were squawking and fluttering their wings. Dyan and I continued yelling at Moose as Dyan struggled to keep Ranger in the boat...Ranger was absolutely flipping out that he couldn't join Moose in the lake. I can only imagine what other boaters around us must have been thinking...."What a shitshow!"
I was finally able to maneuver the boat to a point that Moose was right next to us. I grabbed onto the skin on his neck and pulled the sopping wet 80 pound dog from the lake like it was a state record bass. But things continued to go downhill.. As soon as Moose was in the boat, he was still barking at the birds and then just started peeing....like a fire hose that wouldn't stop. He peed so much, and there was nothing we could do to stop him. It was unreal. My mind was made up in that moment that it was the last time I would ever take those dogs fishing. Once secured, we put the boat on plane and ripped across the lake as far as we could get from that spot.
Later that afternoon, the flies were so bad, Dyan took the pups back home leaving me solo camping again.
The fishing trip really had fallen apart. The fish weren't cooperating, the dogs weren't cooperating. The flies weren't cooperating. But, I was here. At Mille Lacs. I wanted to give one more go at it.
Around 6PM, I headed out on the water, this time trying a new island on the south end I hadn't fished much before. Spider Island.
Tumblr media
While Spider Island really isn't the main attraction. The best fishing area I found was this long spine of boulders (truck sized) arcing to the north of the island. At the base of the spine is a large sandy flat (circled in yellow). In the middle of this sandy flat were a couple of isolated very small rocks, maybe the size of a couch pillow. As I slowly drifted over some of these isolated boulders, I marked a fish holding right next to one. with not a lick of wind, I sat perfectly still on top of the boulder and dropped a drop shot on his head. The fish would move around as if interested, but wouldn't nibble. Based on the size of the mark, I knew it was a good fish, so I decided to wait the fish out. If this was his home, he'd eventually bite, right?
For 10 minutes the fish and I played a little dance where I'd jig, and he'd follow. But still wouldn't eat. I decided to give him a short rest and moved to a couple other boulders, but these vacant of fish. Twenty minutes later, I was back. First cast, I dropped it on his head again, and WHAM! He smoked it so hard it almost knocked the rod out of my hands. It was heavy, but not quite the pitbull that smallmouth usually are. for a moment, I wondered if it was a big walleye, but that thought was completely wiped at when the fish came soaring out of the water. It was a giant Smallmouth! I maneuvered the fish to the back of the boat where I fetched the net where I guided him in safely.
This toad came in at 5.5lbs. An incredible fish with an enormous belly - probably one of my top 3 biggest smallmouths ever.
Tumblr media
I was so excited, I had to show Dyan on Facetime.
Tumblr media
And the spot popped again a few moments later when I moved up to the actual rock spine. I ended up catching 4 more quality fish, including these tubs, all over 4 pounds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looks more like a football, than a smallmouth! Finally, the fish had finally woken up. Also waking up was the fish flies. As I pulled into the dock, the flies were swarming in the sky creating fly tornados.
Tumblr media
And at that moment, I recognized the same sounds from the night before. The fluttering wings of billions of flies created an eerie and downright creepy sound that sounded like flickering electricity. Back at camp, everything, from the chairs, to the picnic table to the truck to the tent was covered with swarming flies. It was disgusting. I retreated to the tent because sitting around the fire was unbearable. Certainly a unique way to end a fishing trip!

LPT: When planning a road trip, don’t just plan for the people you’re going with. Plan on where your vehicle is going to spend the night too. Parking is an often overlooked expense while planning a trip.
LPT: When planning a road trip, don’t just plan for the people you’re going with. Plan on where your vehicle is going to spend the night too. Parking is an often overlooked expense while planning a trip.
While planning a road trip the general concern is figuring out hotels, what you’re going to do when you get there, and a timeline that is reasonable to achieve.
For a lot of people in the US, finding overnight parking is a issue that doesn’t exist. For those that live in those areas it’s often forgotten that there are cities across the US that do not have that luxury.
If I had seen parking as an additional expense I would have expected to pay around $75 max over all. Event parking for Minnesota Wild games was around $25 to walk across the lot, cross the street, and you’re at an entrance. If that’s event prices I would expect the same for overnight.
Over a 4 day, 3 night trip we spent $162 to park my car. For reference we spent less than $90 on gas for the trip. The three nights in the hotels without parking included were around $500. While the hotels and gas was expected and planned for the parking was not a thought that would’ve crossed our minds. There are a few options available some places where you don’t have to bring your car into the city. Look into those options while planning. In Chicago you can park your car outside of the city in designated lots and take the train into the city instead. I’m sure there are other options as well.
After telling the story to a few people that I work with they admitted to have never thought about that. They would have done the same as me, and thought nothing of it being an issue or additional expense.
Now onto the story to let others learn from my travel mistakes.
Last year me and my fiancé planned a trip to go from Duluth, MN to Detroit, MI. There was a concert that we both wanted to go to, and the closest show that had tickets available the day they went on sale was Detroit. Chicago was also a stop on the tour but were sold out within an hour of being available. But being a fan of going anywhere we haven’t seen yet I bought the tickets for Detroit.
We had around six months to organize the trip, which allowed us to try and do some extra research about the area the concert was in. While Detroit was only a 12-13 hour drive from Duluth, we wanted to break the drive up a bit. We couldn’t find other events around the time of our concert, and from what we could see, there wasn’t much that interested us in the city that would be enjoyable in November.
Our plan ended up being we would spend one night in Chicago, go to Detroit the next day for the concert and spend one night there, go back to Chicago for another night on the return home, and leave for Duluth the following day. It was a bit of a crunch due to work schedules and the amount of time we could take off, but it was doable.
We booked the hotels about a month in advance, choosing to stay at two different hotels in Chicago. Besides packing and driving, we were all set in our eyes.
Since we both grew up in the Duluth area parking was an issue that neither of us faced on a regular basis. It was pretty straightforward with meters and city run parking ramps in the downtown area, and meters in the Canal Park area. Alternate side parking year round for the rest of the city. The most you would pay at a ramp was $15 if you were there for 12+ hours. Even in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area parking for concerts or sporting events ran from $10-$35. The high range was for the lots that you shouldn’t go to unless there were no other options.
Given our previous “experience” with parking, it wasn’t an expense or challenge that crossed our mind. The last time that my fiancé was in Chicago was with family, and as she didn’t drive, she didn’t park, and had no recollection of prices/availability.
The first hotel in Chicago was when our eyes were opened to the issue. After arriving and pulling up in front of the hotel to unload bags we both have a sudden realization at the same time. What do we do with the car? We stood there looking around, looking for any sign that indicated parking and couldn’t find one. A man comes from the hotel lobby and asks if we are staying here and if we needed valet parking. We give each other a dumbfounded look and both just say yes. He asked us to go inside to check in, and bring back my keys with my room number. While checking in we were told about the valet option, and if we wanted that they would add a $65 dollar charge to the card used to reserve the room. We were told about other options that were a few blocks away but was told they run about $60 for overnight, and if we need our car again tonight we would have to pay the attendant for the time used so far, and still have to pay the full $60 for after we returned. If we did valet, they could bring me my car as many times as needed throughout my stay for the $65 charge. For ease and peace of mind, we went with the valet option. While surprised, we decided that it was just something we had to deal with.
In Detroit, parking wasn’t a big deal. We found a hotel 10 minuets from the venue that was far enough from the city that they had a parking lot that they owned. Parking downtown for the concert ran us around $15, which was an amount that was expected.
Upon return to Chicago we were a little more prepared for the parking at the hotel. We accepted that there would either be another valet charge, or we would park at a nearby ramp and pay what they wanted for overnight. Valet was offered for a charge to the room for $60.
The next day we want to go see a couple things that we didn’t get to yet. Notably the Willis Tower. Despite our experience thus far with parking we kind of had a brain fart from this point on. Upon checking out we assumed that our car would need to be taken out of the lot they use. We did have all of our bags as well so we went to the lobby and asked for the car because carrying the bags around wasn’t feasible given the plans we had for our last time available in Chicago. Upon getting the car we did not ask if they would return it to the lot. To this day, I don’t know if that was an option, and I wish I would’ve asked. Our hotel was blocks away from the Willis Tower, and despite the temperature would have been an easy walk from the hotel.
Once in the car we start to go in the direction of the tower, I begin to realize my stupidity. I brush it off because I’m sure we won’t be at the Willis Tower for long. Four hours at the absolute max. We were both exhausted at this point, and while we still wanted to see some things, we were ready to make our way home. Once we get there and get to a parking ramp I see the sign. 3-4 hours was $27. At this point I just accepted it as “part of the Chicago experience”

Oh these are nice!! Here u go: Artemis, Hades, Cyclops, Nymph, Satyr, Heracles, Agamemnon, Sun Chariot, Elysium & Troja! (I'M SORRY THEY ARE SO MANY) ((((lol not really))))
+++++ Hippolytus & Harpe (WHAT CAN I SAY I’M CURIOUS AF)
MY DUDE I AM NOT INTERESTING ENOUGH TO MERIT TALKING ABOUT MYSELF THIS MUCH 💜😭💜
Artemis: What do you first notice about new people?
I don’t think I’ve ever considered this? Probably what their voice sounds like.
Hades: What’s a big fear of yours?
FROGS. MOTHER. FUCKING. FROGS.
Cyclops: Last time you cried?
Last night, when I was packing up things in my bedroom to move to my new apartment, and I got to the shelf with my cat Tori’s ashes. I was fine packing up the actual urn and her pictures, but the pawprints and fur absolutely broke me.
Nymph: Last dream you remember?
I had a dream that Taika Waititi was a regular director at a theatre I work with all the time, and somehow I’d never known, even though the hallways were FULL of pictures of him (he had a pineapple on his head in most of them).
Satyr: Last time you couldn’t stop laughing?
I was at a party with some of my best friends from college, we had all had a few shots of moonshine, and the phrase “Bottom Half Hamburger Baby” happened. There were tears.
Heracles: Have you ever had a dream come true?
Like, literally? I get little bits of ‘dream deja vu’ before with small, unimportant details happening that I know I’ve dreamed about.
Agamemnon: What is an achievement you’re proud of?
It’s not so much one particular achievement, but I’m very proud that I’ve been able to get so many professional acting jobs that actually pay well.
Sun Chariot: What is your favorite mythological creature?
I’ve been madly in love with mermaids since I was a toddler. I’m not sure if those are technically ‘mythological’, but loving mermaids is basically a part of who I am.
Elysium: If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
Probably flying? Of the basic superpowers, anyway. Does time travel count?
Troja: What is the craziest thing you wanna do before you die?
Oh my god I’m so boring, I’d be super happy if I died without having ever done anything crazy. It’s definitely not ‘crazy’ by any means, but one of my biggest bucket list items is recording an audiobook. I suppose I want to own like, a dozen cats at some point. That’s probably crazy.
Hippolytus: Tell an experience you will never forget.
I went to Disneyland to celebrate my college graduation, and one of the days we were there, we met this man named Mark. He’s retired, he has a pass that lets him cut all the lines, and basically every day he goes to Disneyland, finds a group of people who seems nice, and takes them on a tour of the park, telling them all sorts of stories and trivia and letting them cut the lines with his pass. We bumped into him in line for a ride early in the morning, and we hung out with him for a solid twelve hours. It was fantastic. One of the best days I’ve ever spent in Disney. 💜
Harpe: What are your top 3 favorite places?
Okay I didn’t read all the questions beforehand. Now my last story looks lame because I’m definitely picking Disneyland as my absolute favorite place. I’m such a disney hoe. My other two are my dad’s backyard, and Duluth, MN
THIS IS THE MOST I’VE EVER TALKED ABOUT MYSELF IN ONE SITTING
-send me greek myth asks!-
