the little corella, also known as the bare-eyed cockatoo, is a relatively small cockatoo species found in australia and new guinea. they are a highly social bird, and often congregate in groups that can reach the thousands. these flocks can include multiple other cockatoo species. when playing or gathering to feed, these cockatoos are noisy and communicate through high-pitched shrieks. the little corella can be distinguished from similar species by the distinct bare blue skin around their eyes. they feed primarily on grains and seeds, and are sometimes considered agricultural pests, as they feed on cereal crops. they are somewhat common in aviculture; while they are legal to be kept as pets, and are actually still trapped in the wild legally due to their status as pests, they can be demanding and hard to care for. without a companion bird, they often do poorly in captivity.

#1991 - Cacatua sanguinea - Little Corella
Tumblr media
Photo by Gregory Smith on Wikipedia.
AKA short-billed corella, bare-eyed cockatoo, blood-stained cockatoo, and little cockatoo, and Birdirra among the Yindjibarndi people of the central and western Pilbara, who would keep them as pets, cook and eat them, and use downy feathers in traditional ceremonies and dances. Cacatua sanguinea, means 'Blood-stained Cockatoo' and refers to the dark pink markings between the eye and bill. There were first scientifically described by the British ornithologist John Gould in 1843.
Small cockatoos similar in appearence to the Long-billed Corella and the Western Corella. The five subspecies are found over most of Australia and New Guinea, with the exception of thick forest. They usually fly in large flocks, sometimes in their thousands, and their screaming audible from kilometers away.
In South Australia, little corellas are considered "unprotected native fauna" and may be shot, trapped or gassed by landowners.

You can tell which anons have never met a parrot irl and its so funny to me. I worked in a parrot shelter. The person I am now was borne of the blood of my burst eardrums from being in a room with 100+ macaws, conures, amazons and cockatoos.
How often does Monty sing the song of his people?
ekkies are actually very quiet! he only screams when he hears the corellas go past my window. but hes a great talker, his favorite noise at the moment is going 'OH. OH. OOH. OH. OHH.' like hes uncovering the secrets of the universe
honourable mentions to: telephone noise, laserbeam pew pew, 'hello, i love you', pop pop pop, and of course ʰᵒⁿᵏ

Hey Pia! Hope you're well (very new reader here).
I gather that you live in quite a rural area (?) what do you like about living there? What is the flora/fauna like? I'm from the UK and haven't really experienced other climates so I'm interested heh
˶‘ ᵕ ‘˶
Hi hi anon!
I'm in what's classified as 'semi-rural' here in Western Australia, but basically it means that I am smack in the middle of dense suburbia, and then 10 minutes away from farmland and bushland on all sides, lol.
It's weird! Because it means we have a lot of amenities close by (though no hospitals or emergency care, they're all around 30-60 minutes away), but it also means when we travel out of the suburb, we often see kangaroos or alternatively alpacas and sheep (there's a lot of fleece farms up this way).
The weather here is actually quite Mediterranean (literally, Perth is classed as a 'Hot-summer Mediterranean climate' in the Koppen system). We can go months without rain. And we get around 139 clear days per year (no cloud cover), which means we're one of the sunniest capital cities in the world (to my endless dismay).
As to the animals *thinks* it's fairly normal to see kangaroos around here, at large parks and on farmland and clearings in bushland, and sometimes on the side of busy roads (which is not great). They are most common at dawn and at dusk. We also used to see wild emus for a while, but that was a few years ago, and I think this area is now too built up for it!
There are lots of parrots, and they're probably the most common birds we see, outside of like doves, Australian magpies (they are not Corvids), Australian ravens (they are Corvids), and birds of prey. The most common parrots we get up here are Carnaby's cockatoos, rainbow lorikeets, corellas, and pink & grey galahs. We also have a decent population of wood ducks, lol. And a lot of small songbirds. We get a lot of singing honeyeaters and brown honeyeaters in our garden.
Most of our trees aren't deciduous, so they keep their leaves all year round. And Eucalyptus are flowering trees. Right now all the jarrah trees are flowering all at the same time, with puffy huge white and cream blossoms, turning the bushland into the sound of lazy buzzing. Every day this week will be over 36C, so we make sure our birdbath is full, and the birds do actually use it. We have a garden, and I have mostly native plants in there, as well as some pots with curry plant (karapincha) and lemongrass, as well as rosemary, thyme and lavender.
When the weather is hot and there's clouds in the sky, we get the most amazing sunsets. My userpic is of a sunset that happened in my back garden.
These, for example, were all taken in the back garden:

And this is what most of the surrounding bushland around us looks like in summer:

What do you think about when you're riding? .. Though it doesn't have to be riding. But it's those long periods when you're all alone. Occupied with the mechanics of surviving, but having to occupy your mind. For Me, it's when I'm riding. I'm not talking about those times when I'm going through the twisties. Those are full on concentration, when the sweat springs out, the visor is cracked open to stop it fogging on the inside because I'm breathing so damned hard.
No, I'm talking about those times when the highway is stretching in front of you like an arrow, a multi-lane grey ribbon that stretches to the horizon with minimalist curves and even the white lines are monotonous in their spaced regularity.
It's those times, when the only part of you that moves is your throttle hand and your eyelids. What do you think about to pass the time?
Music first .. all the oldies .. rocking tunes that you'd forgotten you knew, but can't quite remember the words .. then the comedy skits .. comedy songs ..
Butter,
I remember butter,
We once were lovers,
Oh what a pair.
grin .. But that's all I could remember ... and I mean ALL .. and after 30 mins, I CAN'T forget .. gods .. I had to get home so that I could play it all through and finally lay that demon to rest.
The pain starts to set in gradually.. it creeps out from the center, up the torso to the shoulders and down to the wrists, spreading out and down my legs, concentrating on the knees and eventually I know what hell is going to be like.
Concentrate .. think of the good things .. the people you've met.. laughing A friend's little boy so excited at the thought of sitting on a motorcycle that he's literally wriggling on his chair, the motor running at 5000RPM in idle .. A flock of Corellas bursting from the trees and playing chicken with my front wheel. Watching them twist and wheel up and over, swinging away at the last minute ...
Think of another song ..
All My friends are fuckups
but they're fun to have around..
Remember the curves up to Cabramurra.... sitting in the general store eating the best chicken schnitzel in Australia, watching the high country parrots playing on the feeders and the little kids outside fascinated by the colours...
tuck in behind a semi trailer ... love the fact that he bears the sign .. 100km per hour speed limited and here I am doing 130 ... buffet, twitch, buffet .. fuck .. much too close .. drop back the speed and fall into the roiled air that they always leave behind .. all of a sudden, there's no pain .. just concentration .. ride the flows like a surfer, leave enough looseness in the the wrists and arms to give the bike some flexibility, but guide it .. gods ... no tank slappers please ... until finally I've fallen back far enough to be in the calm air and the aches start to creep up again ..
who remembers the taste of the first kiss? gods .. I do .. so sweet .. and the sound she made ... and then I realise that I'm rubbing up against the tank .. My own personal vibrator ... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm .. what's that song again? .what could be wetter than, an english girl,an american man ... *grin*.. though she wasn't english and I wasn't american ..
put My feet on the back pegs and mould over the tank, weight on My thighs and feet and the pain goes away for a few and I start to remember other things .. How could I have forgotten the shape of her mouth ... let's think of another subject 'cuz the leather only stretches so far and like Robert Frost I have miles to go ...
Down the bend into Tarcutta tucked in behind a semi and there's the police out in force with the breathalyzer ... grin behind the visor .. I'm too close behind the semi and so they miss Me and go for the driver behind ... who incidentally passes Me 15 mins later ... She's got a pony tail ... fuck ... there's those thoughts again .... think bike .. think bike ...
*laughing, remembering being told a story .. Man rides two stroke crotch rocket with methanol in the tank ... decides to insult Harley riders ... does so and then takes off like a rocket ... gets out of sight ... and suddenly .. no power ... oh fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck ... plants the bike in a ditch and lies down till they all pass ... finds out that the methanol has frozen his carbies .... Laugh?.. I had tears running down My eyes at at that ..
Think about drinking port ... mmmmmmmmmmm ... or the bakery at Beechworth .. I swear folks .. you have to visit there .. order a lamington with cream ... *grin*.. eat it ... and tell Me what it tastes like to you ... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm .. best damned cream I ever had
Finally ... finally .. there's the lights of Telstra Tower rising up .. only 30 mins to go ....home .... bath ... salts ... rest the aches ...
Take up riding ... I swear ..the memories are the best part
