Mehernosh, a pallbearer - the person in charge of carrying the dead body at a funeral - walks away from one of the two functioning towers of silence in Karachi. A tower of silence, known as dakhma, is a circular structure built by Zoroastrians for excarnation - that means the exposure of human corpses to the elements for decomposition - in order to avoid contamination of the soil and other natural elements by the decomposing dead bodies. Carrion birds, usually vultures (though no longer in Karachi…) and other scavengers, consume the flesh. Skeletal remains are gathered into a central pit where further weathering and continued breakdown occurs. In this dakhma, reflective mirrors have been fitted inside the tower of silence to increase the heat and help the body decomposing faster. Karachi, a city of 20 millions, has 800 Zoroastrians known as Parsees, 70% of them are above the age of 70 years old.

Marina asked the audience for characters she could draw to complete the sketchbook, so I was one of those who made suggestions. I asked three characters from WF and Clover from Undertale Yellow

An illustrated Videvdad Sadah
Yazd, Iran; 1647 Copied by Mihrbān son of Anūshīrvān son of Bahrām Shāh Source: The British Library
"Burjorji Ashburner was a successful Bombay merchant, a Freemason, and a member of the Bombay Asiatic Society. He was also a member of the Committee of Management for one of the most important Zoroastrian libraries in Bombay, the Mulla Firuz Library and made a special point of having copies made of some of the rarer items. In April 1864 Burjurji wrote offering some 70 to 80 volumes as a gift to the Royal Society, London, promising to add additional ones:
In the course of antiquarian researches...with special reference to the Parsee religion, I have had the good fortune to obtain some valuable ancient manuscripts in Zend, Pehlui, and Persian. I do not wish to keep to myself what may be useful in the literary world. [1]
His collection consisted of standard Arabic and Persian works in addition to nineteen specifically Zoroastrian manuscripts in Persian, Avestan and Pahlavi. A number of Bujorji’s manuscripts came originally from Iran. The oldest is an illustrated copy of the Videvdad sādah which was copied in Yazd, Iran, in 1647. Whereas Zoroastrian manuscripts are generally unillustrated except for small devices such as verse dividers and occasional diagrams, this one, exceptionally, contains seven coloured drawings of trees, used as chapter headings not unlike Islamic manuscripts of the same period.
The beginning of chapter 19 of the Videvdad sadah in which Zoroaster repels an attempt on his life by the demon Buiti, sent by the evil spirit Angra Mainyu. Note the elongated calligraphic script which is typical of the older manuscripts from Iran."

To get into the spirit of Christmas, I've started working on gifts for certain people I know. taimonromance is one of those people.
I know Willy Fog is his absolute favorite. But I also know that he ADORES Parsi, too. So I thought it would be a good idea to draw both of them.
This was my first time drawing Fog in his complete outfit. This was also the first time I drew Parsi. With a little concentration and drive, I was able to get both of them to look right.

hey how about if you aren’t parsi zoroastrian you shut the fuck up about us. like you do know that parsis didn’t die out with Freddy Mercury right. you know that 1. it wasnt a part of his identity to be fangirled over like a zoo visitor and 2. there are still parsis out here in the wild and we can see every inane piece of bullshit you spout about us being fireworshippers with creepy death towers. shocking as it may be there are actual zoroastrians out here who know more about our own culture and religion than you and if i see one more person treating us like we’ve all died out im going to slaughter you with a skinning knife

The Haunting of Mumbai's Tower of Silence
The sky burial method by the Tower of Silence for the Zoroastrian in Mumbai has been up for debate after the vulture population started to decline. There has also been a rise of haunted horror stories in later years circulating online
The sky burial method by the Tower of Silence for the Zoroastrian in Mumbai has been up for debate after the vulture population started to decline. There has also been a rise of haunted horror stories in later years circulating online, but just what is supposed to haunt the ancient burial place? Right by the exclusive neighborhood of Malabar Hill in Mumbai lies a centuries-old structure shrouded…

hi! thnk you guys so much for running this blog. ive just been feeling kind of. weird recently abt my race/culture and wanted to idk talk it out... like. my mom is white, and my dad is visibly brown and racially parsi (persian) indian, which is like its own thing because the parsis immigrated to india so long ago that theyre considered indian by many, but he and that side of the family have always lived in kenya, and he considers himself kenyan much more than indian. it makes me feel like an intruder on a bunch of levels; i dont even know anymore if im 'whitepassing' or not, like im tan, have a hooked nose, body hair, and droopy eyes, but i dont know if i actually look. 'indian'. you know. or if i could even say that, if im supposed to be iranian, or persian, and then culturally my family is very connected to kenya, and i spend most of my summers there, and i love kenya and my dad is a proud kenyan, but i feel so so white whenever i go there and its like. i wasnt raised there. i was raised in the us. i was born in the us. my dad isnt even african, he's indian, and it makes me feel weird to say im kenyan when my family isnt black. i really want to be comfortable being proudly kenyan, parsi, and indian, but i end up feeling like an intruder, and it doesnt help that my mom is like translucently pale, blond blue eyes etc. its weird. people never guess that my dad will be as dark as he is but they also ask me if im adopted when they see me with my mom. i just feel lost. i dont know
hi there! thanks for sharing your story. Lots of ppl have contacted this blog with similar feelings and experiences. ultimately, I hope you learn to accept that your experiences and your community are yours and just because white colonial vocabulary doesn't have a neat label for it, that doesn't mean you have no identity. as you say, you're all the things that you are. plenty of people all over the world have ethnic, racial and national identities that all seem to contradict themselves but they're still yours and you're actually very lucky to visit Kenya and your family there too. You aren't an intruder. You might want to look into "third culture kids" I think that might help you understand that there are others like you too. Also, for what it's worth, Kenyan isn't a race, it's a nationality. You can be Kenyan and white, just like you can be American and Parsi, like you. It's totally okay. Try to focus less on finding the perfect descriptors for what you are and focus on finding joy in connecting with your family and community because that's where the comfort you're looking for will come from! best of luck 💕

✨ The 'Dakhma' or Towers of Silence are large circular structures made out of stone. They are a the burial ground of Zoroastrian religion. Zoroastrians leave the dead in the tower below the sun for vultures & other scavengers to consume.

Parsi New Year or Navroz is celebrated by the Parsi community across the world. Special feasts are prepared to celebrate this as ‘Jamshedi Navroj’ remarks the commencement of 'New Year' for Parsis in India. The word Navroj has been derived from two Persian words: Nav menaing new; and Roz meaning a day
