14. Sam's Wings or Bucky's Arm

Good question! I had half a mind to write about Bucky's Arm, buuuut I feel like I can make something cute with Sam's Wings. Enjoy! 🥰

Sam's Wings

Sam tinkered with them.

Bucky would watch sometimes. Bucky would be out with his goats, and in the distance, near Bucky's house just outside of Birnin Zana, Sam would hide between missions and relax.

And, sometimes, relaxing meant working on those wings.

Sam would adjust them like a piano. He would talk about them like an instrument. They had to be tuned in a particular way; have the right sensitivity for Sam.

Bucky didn't mind.

Bucky could listen to Sam for hours talking about the minor tweaks he would make to the wings. He could watch Sam all day; fidgeting with mainframes and testing routines and little flutters of the wing.

Those wings would keep Sam safe out there in a way Bucky could never. Bucky worried Sam would say those wings kept him safe in a way he never kept Riley safe. A constant need to make sure that what happened to Riley happened to no one else, even if it was Sam himself.

It didn't help that Sam had seen Rhodey fall from the sky only a year before.

Bucky wondered at times if this was all routine checks or if it was a bit obsessive.

Maybe Sam needed that, though.

It made Sam happy. It made Sam feel safe. That couldn't be bad.

Sam was confident in his work too. He was proud of it. With good reason.

Bucky wandered away from his goats. He found himself next to Sam, standing above him.

"Join me?" asked Sam, not looking up from his work.

"Always," said Bucky as he lay down next to Sam.

Sam continued to tinker. Bucky could see a soft smile forming on Sam's face.

Yeah.

Bucky could watch Sam work on his wings forever.

headcanon that for Christmas one year before they find buck (idc about canon timeline ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) steve draws or paints this beautiful portrait of Riley and sam and sam literally just,,,,, gets it and tears up but it's too much so he goes into his room bc Steve probably waited until everyone else left out of respect. and Steve pats his shoulder and he pulls him in for a hug and says “thanks man” and he means it and then just full on sobs. he doesn’t put it out at first until he sort of comes to terms with it on his own and he finally hangs the picture up and it's probably not too big bc Steve isn't flashy so it's somewhere public but not in your face. he sees it from time to time like maybe he waves goodbye to riley as he grabs his keys or comes in from a jog and wipes his face and tells him about the funny old lady bird watching in the park or how he “really almost beat the captain america doing laps around the memorial this time i mean it” and wow omg my heart 🥺😭

The song ends and another starts. Sam half-turns toward the dancefloor at the first tone, the wine glass forgotten in his hand. He gets a look in his eyes as Frank Sinatra’s voice starts to fill the spacious room.

Bucky watches him for a moment; the look in his eyes is one of aching longing and wistfulness, as if the music has taken him to a different time and place. The look grows unbearably sad, so without thinking, Bucky asks, “Wanna dance?”

fade and fixture pairing: symbrock | synopsis: Eddie starts seeing a new therapist to process his past. Venom wants to be a part of the process, but doesn't know how to adapt to human ideas about psychotherapy. Will he ever get to the bottom of things, help Eddie heal? Or will he be shut out?

once bitten (18+) pairing: symbrock | synopsis: Venom bites Eddie to communicate that he loves him; Eddie returns the favor.

The alternate riley timeline trip is, like Catching My Breath, also very much in line with my requirement for past Samriley. Basically, Sam accidentally ends up in an alternate timeline/reality (they’re trying to send him through time but something goes wrong and he goes through reality instead). He ends up in one where instead of Riley dying, he did. And now Riley is in his position. Everything is pretty much the same, except for how some things are very different.

And in lieu of a snippet I give you some of my near-incomprehensible outlining notes! But I apologise because, honestly, it’s a mess, haha.

Riley, seeing Sam has the shield on his back: are you Captain America? Sam: yeah, wait, who is Captain America here? Riley: I am Sam: you know Steve? Riley: yeah, I do, or I did, he went back in time to an alternate timeline Sam: same! Sam’s noticing, while this all goes down and they’re still holding on to each other’s arms and ducking in and out for extra hugs, that Riley smells really weirdly familiar to him. Like an odd mix of deja vu of how he used to smell but, also, something more acutely familiar, he also smells like- Someone comes into the room, Sam can’t see them past Riley, but he hears them when they say in a very familiar voice, sounding confused: Riley? Sam pulls away from Riley to look and Riley half turns to them. Riley: Sam, this is my partner Bu- Sam: Bucky?! Sam’s surprised to see him and it’s weird looking at him because he’s not quite Sam’s Bucky. His hair is different and he’s dressed a bit different too, but he’s still clearly a version of Bucky. This Bucky looks to Riley for an explanation. Riley to Bucky: this is Sam, he just jumped realities trying to jump time Riley to Sam: is Bucky your partner in your universe? Sam: yeah. well, coworker Riley: no, Sam, I mean Bucky’s my husband

everyone is always talking about how bucky would react when sam catches him after a fall. but imagine how sam would feel after just barely managing to catch bucky, how it'd remind him of riley, whom he didn't manage to catch, whom he had to watch fall and die

god yes absolutely - you just know that’s been weighing on sam’s soul for years, no matter how much progress he’s made with his own trauma

The idea of him watching his love fall again, but this time being able to swoop down and just barely grab his arm in time... ooooh baby. Like you can just picture it - sam feeling his vision narrowing, time seemingly standing still as he watches bucky fall. Him diving for what feels like forever, reaching and reaching while an unbearable feeling in his chest claws at him. But then their hands connect, sam digs his fingers in and grabs so hard he nearly breaks bones because he won’t let go, he can’t let go.

Afterward when they’re both safely on the ground and perhaps back at a safe house, sam just breaks down. He can’t stop crying and he clings to bucky, like if he lets go then the nightmare, the almost of what happened that day, would become reality. Bucky holds Sam just as tight, knowing how close it was, and knowing just how many times he’s seen sam wake in a cold sweat with Riley’s name on his lips.

here’s a snippet from that past!samriley current!sambucky past-lives-inspired fic in the hey princess verse

He catches sight of Riley before Riley sees him, and he takes a moment to just stand back and watch as Riley looks around the atrium, mouth agape in wonder, his shock of fiery red hair a notable contrast to the shades of white making up the majority of the atrium’s decor. Sam feels a smile find its way to his lips unbidden, and his brain catches on a memory of sneaking up behind Riley once when they were teens at an art gallery they’d visited in NOLA. Riley’d worn an expression a hell of a lot like the one he’s wearing now, adorably awestruck, and he’d been too swept up in the piece he’d been looking at to notice Sam come up next to him. Sam had managed to draw imaginary lines connecting at least ten of the freckles covering Riley’s face before he’d batted his hands away, catching them in his own and making Sam’s heart skip a beat.

It feels like a whole lifetime ago.

It feels like it was just yesterday.

He doesn’t sneak up on him now, not with whatever they are. He just clears his throat from the entrance to the atrium and waits for Riley to look his way. “Hey, Riley,” he says a little timidly, unsure of exactly how formal he should be going for, and Riley turns his way.

“Sammy!” Riley near-shouts, beaming, and it feels wrong now, hearing someone call him “Sammy” that isn’t Bucky. He holds back his cringing, though, ever the diplomat these days, and lightly returns Riley’s hug when he wraps him in an enthusiastic embrace.

“It’s good to see you,” Sam says, hoping it’s neutral enough to neither make things awkward nor overly familiar. He spares a second to mentally note his hatred for having to treat an interaction with Riley of all people with his etiquette handbook lenses on, but he buries that thought before he can dwell on it too much. He’s sure it’ll come back when he’s trying to sleep later on, anyway.

ok so in terms of like canon stuff i feel like riley and sam had the closest thing u could to a meet cute in the literal army and i see their relationship as like very similar to daveklaus??? i think it definitely like in precatws i see them as meeting on base, maybe even not knowing each other before they got assigned to the project and got their wings etc

there’s a lot of potential for a slow burn there even as just a platonic relationship and tbh given the popularity of media like 1917, dunkirk, top gun, and that rn (which….. the modern stuff is more HMMMM but i mean the interest is there???) n marvels propaganda deal with the us military i don’t know WHY they HAVENT greenlit some sort of d+ mini series giving us a samriley prequel ??? at least a short 😭 but idk maybe they’ll actually give us some sams past crumbs in cap 4?????

in aus though i like to hc riley and sam as having the same hometown, i love the idea of riley being a quintessential southern boy with the drawl and the slang, i also heavily borrow from just say you do’s version of riley in which he has a dry sense of humor and takes no shit just like sam!! i picture him as “sassy” and over the top in the same way as like JVN lol

also i think he and sam have the best fashion sense out of anyone in the group except maybe nat when she’s not dressing super comfy casual (we all know steve and bucky are dead last on that one LMAOOO) bc riley comes from a working class family/started working himself at a really young age and so now he likes to be super deliberate about his sense of style/presentation instead of just whatever he got handed down from neighbors or church donations etc and that was a HUGE part of accepting his sexuality + gender identity (he/they riley u will always be famous)

i also borrow some elements of like adam parrish’s backstory 🤡 in that i see riley’s parents as negligent at best and ab*sive at worst, making the wilsons his sort of pseudo-family/safe space even before he and sam get together whether that’s bc they’re childhood besties in aus or bc they accept sam’s closest comrade into their fold (i cant remember if sam lost his parents before he went into the service so don’t come for me anyone) but yeah like in non canon universes i see their story as highly similar to stevebuckys bc they’re foils duh except ig riley would be closer to comics bucky than mcu bucky w his parents

it’s weird bc i used to exclusively ship stevebucky and then samriley completely separate. since i became open to the idea of multi shipping, i now ship in a different order/way??

like for au’s i still follow the two distinctive ships, meaning if i’m writing stevebucky i’ll usually have established samriley or single sam. however if i’m writing sambucky it’s probably going to be past!samsteve and/or stevebucky as well if not just samstevebucky (the most superior of all ships) 😌 like i might mention riley being sam’s ex before he got together with steve (if i’m including him and steve as a couple and not just friends) or just gets w bucky but the focus is way less on riley’s impact on sam’s dating history than like steve if that makes sense which is just interesting to me?? it’s also a roulette wheel of whether or not i decide to throw in sammisty (my beloved) bc sometimes i like to write bi sam and other times i like to write gay sam

sidenote i see peggy and steve and nat absolutely bi, always, angie as 100% a lesbian, misty and sam as bi4bi, but for sam and bucky i could see them as either bi or gay (although i typically tend to write bucky as either just gay or at most bi-curious but always in relationships with mlm)

i feel like i write more samriley in complete au’s than in canon compliant fics which is odd haha

maybe bc in canon compliant fics, if samriley exists i see them as a monogamous partnership, but if sam is with someone else/poly i typically see it like riley d*ed bc personally i just don’t see them breaking up?? they’re like either that couple u know that’s been together since they were 14 and you never see them without each other OR they’re exactly the same but they actually got married in their early 20s. i say, having explicitly written their divorce before

also idk why but i feel like in my head w poly!sam steve and/or bucky (or misty) are cool w him having paramours and metamours and everything even if they aren’t poly themselves but riley is strictly a one man guy and has no interest in anything outside a monogamous mlm relationship. he’s also demi and a hopeless romantic!

when i write samriley + steve and bucky i see riley as being able to relate to bucky better bc i follow the general fandom hc that riley is also disabled, but he’s somewhat closer w steve bc of sam and bucky’s initial “feud” when riley was still distrustful of bucky and 100% in sam’s corner, meaning he and bucky have a similar dynamic to sam and bucky where they like to banter and antagonize one another but he and steve are more chill and friendly when they talk like he and sam are (although they aren’t above ribbing at each other and referencing embarrassing inside jokes)

hngngngngnh h OH also he and sarah are like best friends bc they LOVE to gang up on sam and 100% would die for sam but like given the choice they would unionize to embarrass him at the drop of a hat
