COMM2126 Digital Media and the Senses Task 9 [me19ag]

This week’s content gave me interesting insights on data as a form of capitalist expropriation, monetisation of personal data, data extractivism, resistance practices, “data-doubles” and owning our digital selves. What inspired me most for this week’s task is Couldry’s and Mejias’ (2019) closing statement on how we should go about rejecting data colonialism - we should not reject all its uses and forms but recognise the current practices of resource appropriation and accompanying social order as a colonial process.

This task’s goal is to create a form of resistance to data colonisation. Within his article, Ricaurte (2019) highlights some resistance practices like data activism, algorithmic resistance, data justice and algorithmic accountability. Therefore, I got started on imagining a campaign as a piece of data activism.

The campaign I propose was inspired by the comparison Couldry and Mejias (2019) make between the Spanish empire’s Requerimiento and today’s websites’ Terms of Service. The Requerimento was a proclamation read in Spanish by conquistadors to a non-Spanish speaking audience before they would attack and appropriate the land. The same way the foreign language couldn’t be understood back then, the incomprehensible language of Terms of Service can’t be understood now. At least not by the majority of people. When we accept the Terms of Service without reading them, we unconsciously give our consent to big companies to extract and exploit our personal data. Madianou (2019) calls attention to the ways in which today’s digital media business model is based on the provision of “free” services in exchange of raw, personal data. Except when we don’t pay for a product, we are the product (Budzyn, 2018). Our personal data gets sold to advertisers, hedge funds, market researchers, governments while tech companies gain authority over the production of knowledge and capacity to shape user behaviour. Acknowledging this absurd collection of personal data without informed consent is the first step to resist this practice of data colonialism.

The campaign’s aim is to first bring attention to the issues highlighted above and start difficult discussions about data privacy and more importantly, data property. Is your data yours? To what extent does it belong to the companies who own your social media platforms? Or to the third parties they share users’ data with?

                    Its truly that there’s a lot of places that we can able to go in the Philippines, we can't deny it because where ever we go we can sees beautiful attractions, that's why the Philippines was always visiting by the tourists.But in this blog, the place that i want to disscuss or to share with you guys is all about the Province  of Pangasinan. I chose  this place beacause this is our province and I was grow up here. So here it goes.

          Pangasinan is the third biggest province in the whole Philippines, derive its name came from salt or "asin" where the salt was made. Salt is the prime source of livelihood in PangASINan or Pangasinan. I like this province beacause it's peaceful, and I love travelling here beacuse of the fresh air, specially the foods.    

                Speaking of foods, let's  talk about the traditional food of pangasinan, some of the example is the "pigar -pigar" a beef jerky but made up of both it's meat and liver then fried and mixed vigetables primarly whith cabbage and onion. "Pakasyat" a sweet compounded and solidified  raw sugar candy tablets that is solid yet melts in your  mouth. "Puto and Kuntsinta",both rice cakes. Puto is made up of juice that comes out when rice is grinded with water and is boiled to become a cake. While kutsina is similar to puto except that is has more flour than the rice then added a food coloring so it would  look dark orange.

          One of the traditions in Pangsinan is the dying tradition, it's remembeing the dead. Calasiao Pangasinan dressed in burial clothes and veils and holding lighted candles,a group of residence in central pangasinan called "cantores". This is gathered only on all Saints Day and all Souls Day,and go from house to house, singing the song "Pantawtawag".

           Pangasinan has a lot of beaches, Enchanted Cave beach at bolinao, the Patar Beach, the Bolinao falls  and one of the famous beach here is the Hundred Islands. Hundred  Islands is the National Park in the Philippines. It located in the city of Alaminos Pangasinan. Pangasinan also has a popular church  which is the Our lady  Manaoag, always visiting by the hundreds catholic residences everyday.  Here's the things you can do while at the manaoag church: Have your new car blessed, you can visit the museum of the manaoag church, you can get a bottles for miraculous healing water, attend the mass ,lighting a candles to remember your dearly departed, buy delicious Manaoag "tupig", buy the manaoag local delicacies for your friends. Get your favorite Our Lady of Manaoag collectibles,and lastly but definitely not the least...post for selfie at the front of the church.

                  There’s still more exciting, fun things you can do in Pangasinan if you try to visit there. That's all thank you.

I don't usually find poetry that I like and isn't heavily contextualized in the modern world, and since Catullus and some other Latin poems are burnt into my soul thanks to a terrible substitute Latin teacher, I figured, "eh, why not?"

The original text:

Multas per gentes et multa per aequora vectus advenio has miseras, frater, ad inferias, ut te postremo donarem munere mortis et mutam nequiquam adloquerer cinerem, quandoquidem fortuna mihi tete abstulit ipsum, heu miser indigne frater adempte mihi. nunc tamen interea haec, prisco quae more parentum tradita sunt tristi munere ad inferias, accipe fraterno multum manantia fletu atque in perpetuum, frater, ave atque vale.

My own translation into English, might be highly inaccurate:

Carried through many nations and through many calm seas, I arrive, o brother, to these wretched final rites, so that I might finally present these gifts of death to you, and vainly speak to silent ashes, since Fortune has carried you away from me. Alas, poor brother, so undeservingly stolen from me, now, still, nevertheless these things, delivered by the ancient customs of our ancestors, are handed over as a sad gift to the rites. Untranslatable Words

Untranslatable words are one of my favorite things as a writer. They have a deep meaning, and are absolutely beautiful. Whether you are a linguist or a writer, these words are gorgeous. (Plus, when used properly, make you sound really intelligent!)

As a native English speaking writer, the best way to better understand English is to learn a new one. It will give you a new way to view things and expand your vocabulary immensely. It also heightens your cognitive ability, build multitasking skills, and improves memory.

Below the cut off, I have compiled a short list of untranslatable words. If you want to learn more about foreign languages, check out  @wanderlust-linguist 

Baku-shan - Japanese. A girl that is only beautiful from behind.

Luftmensch - Yiddish. Someone who is a daydreamer. This literally means “air person”. 

L’appel Du Vide - French. The “call of the void”. That sudden urge to jump from a high place. Also: the thing Captain Jack Sparrow does not have.

Schadenfreude - German. The feeling of power or strength that is derived from another person’s pain.

Kyōiku Mama - Japanese. A mother who relentlessly pushes her child(ren) to academic excellence and achievement. (Often to the point of being overbearing and hurting the child(ren).)

Tingo - Pascuense. So, say you want something (or more than one something) from your friend. But you don’t want to outright steal them from their house. Tingo is the act of “borrowing” all the objects one desires from a friend’s house.

Duende - Spanish. The power that artwork has that causes a person to be deeply moved by the piece. 

Age-Otori - Japanese. Simply put, to look worse after a haircut. Relatable af.

Schlimazl - Yiddish. Someone who is chronically unlucky. (Must’ve broken a lot of mirrors.)

Tretar - Swedish. A refill of a refill of a cup of coffee. “Tar” means coffee, and “patar” is a refill of a cup of coffee. So tretar is a third cup of coffee.

Gufra - Arabic. The amount of water that can be held in a hand.

Cafuné - Brazilian Portuguese. The act of running your fingers through someone’s hair as an act of tenderness.

Torschlusspanik - German. It’s a combination of three German words that literally translate to gate-close-panic. (Gotta love German.) It’s the fear of loss/diminished of opportunity as one gets older. 

Palegg - Norwegian. Basically anything that can be put on bread. Peanut Butter. Mayonnaise. Blood. You get the idea.

Merak - Serbian. The feeling of bliss that accompanies being “one with the universe”, happy with simple things, and content with life.

Hyggelig - Danish. The concept of being cozy. Like the Weasley’s house, the Burrow.

Gemütlichkeit - German. The coziness of familiarity. Like being comfortable around a person.

Gezelligheid - Dutch. Kind of like concept of Danish hyggelig and the German concept of gemütlichkeit, although its definition depends on the context. The warmth of being around family, or seeing a friend after a long time apart, et cetera.

Flâner - French. Strolling around a city with no place to go, just simply appreciating it’s beauty.
