My apologies for not posting art for a while, I unfortunately have a strong distaste for social media.
Do you know what I do like however? Patent medicine.

Rough on Rats: From the Office of Cynical Speculation
Since using dangerous and/or addictive compounds in patent “medicines” was common and we know Ephraim had large quantities of arsenic on his hands, I wonder how many of his other products contained traces of this dangerous element. A number of the claims made in the ads for Wells’ beauty aids and “medicines” sound remarkably similar to the effects (the crazy people during the Victorian era)…

"FRIEDMANN TREATS 20 FAVORED PATIENTS," Toronto Star. March 11, 1913. Page 14. --- German Tuberculosis Specialist Demonstrates His "Cure" in Montreal Hospital. ---- IT CAUSES SENSATION ---- The Whole Medical Class From McGill University Present at the Test. ---- Special to The Star. Montreal, March 11. - Twenty favored tuberculosis cases were treated by Dr. F. F. Friedmann, the celebrated German medical man, in the Royal Edward Institute here to-day.
Scores more had made application in writing, and in person, but the list of applicants was first reduced by the staff of the Royal Edward, and further cut down when Dr. Friedmann personally told his assistants at the institute what his desires were.
The doctor is of dapper type. In fact, one would not pick him out as a member of the healing profession, but would rather be inclined to think that he is some member of the diplomatic profession perhaps He is of good stature, but of slim build Dressed nattily in morning attire, with a comfortable looking overcoat and a soft felt hat of the broad brim type, now so fashionable in Europe, the doctor impresses one as being an individual who pays direct attention to the niceties of dress.
Has a Nervous Temperament. One is impressed with a sense of a nervous temperament. Quick in action, quick in movement; for instance, he seemed always to want to run up stairs, rather than walk up slowly. Those who have met him more intimately confirm that impression, but say that much of his present nervousness has been caused by the severe criticism he has been subjected to while in America. Before Dr. Friedmann had arrived at the Royal Edward Institute there was an invasion of the greater portion of the graduating class in medicine at McGill. The classes expressed a wish to be allowed to be present at the demonstrations. This was granted, and through Dr. Adami, Dr. Friedmann expressed his pleasure, saying that he felt much touched by this request.
Demonstration Begins. It was at 12.25 that the demonstration began, and when it ended at 12.55 seven patients had been treated. The first was that of a girl suffering from tuberculous neck glands. The other cases included a man, two women, and three girls. These cases were of varying type, but most of them were ones in which there was affection of the bones. At the conclusion of the demonstration, Dr. Harding, superintendent of the Royal Edward Institute, made a statement to a Star reporter. He explained that seven cases treated by Dr. Friedmann, represent different varieties of tuberculous disease. "Dr. Friedmann is a very skilled operator," said Dr. Harding. "He has adopted the latest methods."
"Did he use his own instruments?" was asked.
"Yes."
"It was stated in New York that the instruments used by Dr. Friedmann were altogether antiquated." Dr. Harding laughed heartily, dismissing the matter as unworthy of answer.
"Is there any ground for the criticism of Dr. Friedmann's technique?"
"No, Dr. Friedmann is a very skilled operator."

Yesterday, while I was in a South Asian-style food market, I came across a small shelf that was selling skin-whitening creams. The boxes said things like "improve your career" and similar, in the sense that you're more likely to be hired and promoted if you are of fair complexion. This is marketing meant for South Asia, where Colorism is a part of job culture. Used to be the same here! Black folks would buy products in an effort to bleach their skin. But these days, in the United States, saying something like "I’d promote you if you were paler" out loud would get you a hearty "fuck you" from the whole room, and maybe a discrimination lawsuit.
So it was odd, and a little disappointing, to see such products sold here. But then I thought -- I have been told I am quite pale. What happens if I put some of this stuff on? Does it make my skin bone-white? Is there nothing more it can do to me? Or is this stuff complete hogwash that does nothing? Surely it must to SOMETHING, it's an entire industry! But then, so was patent medicine.
And if it DOES do something...what the hell is in this stuff? I get the feeling that it's not entirely safe.

Due to Circumstances, this month’s Lesser-Known Lake Monster article on Cassie, the sea serpent of Maine’s Casco Bay has to be postponed.
So many Circumstances…
However! Work on this post is still progressing, so in the meantime, I thought you would enjoy this truly bonkers patent medicine ad from Topeka, Kansas that popped up during my research.

Davids and Daniel - King St Druggists
Davids and Daniel – King St Druggists
Banner image is of E. E. Rutherford’s Cut Rate Drug Store at Spadina and Nassau, circa 1915. Courtesy of Toronto Public Library. If I had a time machine, there’d be many aspects of 19th century Toronto life which I’d love to travel back to and experience firsthand – but medical care would not be one of them. That’s because, up until the mid-19th century, doctors were most commonly general…

Global Patent Medicine Market Asia pacific Region
Manufacturers in the Asia Pacific region are focusing more on R&D in the patent medicine market. For example, Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Japan, patented Cyanotriazole compounds in April 2020, which improve hyperglycemia with fewer side effects and excellent safety and are useful in the treatment of diabetes.

Turpentine was used to relieve congestion and toothaches and to prevent infections, but it can be toxic.
Despite serious safety concerns, pennyroyal was used for the common cold, pneumonia, fatigue, ending a pregnancy (abortion), and as an insect repellant
