I love retro F1 sm and when I saw Rush I was trying to identify all the drivers in the background. And then I really put in the effort and did so much research on trying to identify the drivers lol bc I love them sm. So here are the drivers from the 1976 grid that I spotted so far! If I missed any or you think I got someone wrong, don't hesitate to tell me!
I tried so hard lmao it got a bit inconsistent later on bc drivers back then would change their overalls halfway through their season lol.
Drivers featured are: Tom Pyrce, Jody Scheckter, Clay Regazzoni, Carlos Pace, Emerson Fittipaldi, Patrick Depailler, Graham Hill, Jochen Mass, John Watson, Jacques Laffite, Gunnar Nilsson, Carlos Reutemann, Guy Edwards, Michel Leclere, Ronnie Peterson, Bob Evans, Harald Ertl, Chris Amon, Hans-Joachim Stuck, Arturo Merzario, Jean Pierre Jarier,

Gilles' copper racing suit
Unfortunately he didn't wear it that much, because,if I remember correctly, orange and similar colours are reserved for marshalls, so he wore it only in 1977 when he raced at the British Grand Prix for Mclaren and later when he started racing for Ferrari in Niki's place.
It's a pity because it's such a energetic, warm and unique colour plus the combination with dark blue details is nice, not to mention it suited him so perfectly it accentuated his slim waist and his body shape in general.
p.s I still think Ferrari's fiery red was his colour.
Patrick's pastel blue racing suit
He's often seen wearing this racing suit around the time he was still racing for Tyrell, in particular the years in which he raced with the 'iconic' Tyrell P34 (1976-77), mostly remembered for its six wheels and innovative design.
To me Patrick is such a fascinating man, you would see him walking around the paddock confidently wearing his sunglasses and with a cigarette between his lips, you may get a little bit intimidated by this kind of confidence, you see this person as untouchable and unapproachable, but with this delicate colour everything softens.
Then he starts speaking, you would expect a rough or deep voice, no lol in reality he was just a soft spoken french man, so I think this colour kinda works for him.
(this is literally my favourite colour)
Keke's bright yellow racing suit
In the 1985 season, the Williams introduced their new car the Williams FW10, that's where this racing suit made its first appearance and i dare to say it's the first yellow one I think, I mean a full yellow racing suit.
The same point I made for Patrick applies as well for Keke: sunglasses, often wrapped in a cloud of smoke, an intimidating presence even, but after all he's finnish they're often portraited as cold and even a little bit detached.
In this case the bright yellow doesn't help much, it's like a punch in the face, right on the nose, his presence is percived even more and accentuates his strong personality.
I'll be honest I've never liked yellow that much, but it actually suits him, the red details+red racing boots are a nice touch and strangely his blond hair and the yellow of the suit are not a bad combination.
Elio's black & gold racing suit
In 1985 Lotus' black racing suits weren't that different from the previous year, but fortunately they changed all those white deatails into yellow/gold ones, the same colours of the Lotus 97T and never a better choice was made.
I can't imagine Elio in a bright red racing suit, or any bright colour in general, i would opt to darker shades, they're more classy, more professional, and this black and gold combination was wonderful, it suited him perfectly.
Ronnie's sapphire racing suit
I was undecided because both Ronnie and Keke at least once wore each a yellow or a blue racing suit in their time in F1 and they're both blond, so for Ronnie I opted for the blue one he wore in 1978.
Ronnie had literally both his racing suit and his helmet match the Swedish flag, and when he used both together it looked very good.
This dark shade of blue combined with his blond hair is *chef's kiss*, I always liked it as a combination in general, it creates such a nice contrast.
Okay let's do another hunger games thing cause I could realy use a laugh right now.
Me: sending prayers to the heavens above that Nelson and Jochen DO NOT fall into pits and drown again🙏🙏
François bashed Riccardo's head in. Like... the fuck??
Niki and Nelson get into a figh over a bag. Niki gives up and retreats. Both are still alive, phew.
Carlos, Jim, René and James seem to team up for now.
And Jochen didn't drown. Another plus.
Everyone seems to be on the hunt for tributes to kill. Except Elio, he's fishing like: 😊🌼
James and Ronnie just got decimated by Jacques and Nigel.
Elio just killed Ayrton in his sleep. Guess we could've seen that one coming🤣
Didier, Jacques, René and Gilles are dicks to Carlos and raide his camp while he's out hunting.
Alain picks flowers.
Me: *grumbling noises *
Niki, Jim, Nelson and Bruno just ganged up on François. Like, revenge for Riccardo?? Niki might be on the opposing team but these idiot kids are still his idiot kids.
Andrea dies if dysentery. Had to google that and... yikes. Not a rather nice way to go.
Emerson stayed awake all night.
Bruno convinces Gilles to snuggle with him🤗
Elio set off an explosive and killed Patrick, Nigel and Didier, which 1) they are on your team you doughnut and 2) that was your husband you donkey🤦♂️🤦♂️
Niki begs Jacques to kill him but he refuses. Erm... okay. I think Niki can't handle the stupid.
Nelson and Niki team up to drown Carlos.
Other than that this round was just a lot of hunting and fishing and getting pricked by thorns while searching for berries (in Phil's case).
Gilles forces Jochen to kill either Alain or Jim. He goes for Alain. That makes me sad.
Appart from that little mishap that night was spend trucing and cuddling.
But Jochen seems to be pissed about what Gilles made him do. He kills him the next day with a knife to the chest.
Jacques dies while trying to escape the area. And now I have to picture Jacques trying to climb this dome they're probably all in (me not knowing jack squat about hunger games) and falling to his death.
Niki, Jim and Bruno start fighting and Jim runs away as Niki kills Bruno. Niki seems to have snapped, the others should watch out😳
Now René is begging Jacky to kill him but he keeps him alive. Maybe he wants out cause Niki snapped🤷♂️
Uuuh, but Jim is stalking Niki now. Maybe thinking about some preamptive measures??
Now René killed Jim for his supplies. René that was dumb, why not form an alliance to take out Niki?? Everyone else is making truces for the night and snuggling again anyways.
Okay the feast. Let's go!
Nelson, Emerson, Jackie and Elio all decide to stay away.
Jochen bashes René's head in. *trying not to say he didn't drown yet to not jinx it *
Jacky and Phill get into a fight over raw meat but Phil gives up and runs away. At least nobody died🤷♂️
Niki just takes some clothes and high tails it out of there.
Jackie... fAllS INTo A PiT anD DieS😅 I wasn't expecting that. I'm still fearing for Nelson and Jochen not to die stupidly again that I laughed out loud at this one. I wasn't expecting it🤣
Jacky defeats Jochen in a fight but spares his life. He'd better🤬
Niki steals from Phil while he isn't looking.
Nelson tracks down and kills Phil. Well that escalated quickly for Phil.
Jochen just got lost. But he hasn't drowned yet😅
Emerson bled out due to untreated injuries.
Niki looks at the night sky... and thinks of his one true love... yogurt.
Jochen and Jacky tracked down and killed Elio. My Mickx brain going 😚 *chefs kiss *
Nelson discovered a river and Niki collects fruits.
Wolf muts get released.
Jochen and Jacky survive 🤗
Nelson knocks Niki out and leaves him for the muts. That's cold but not entirely unpredictable as well.
Aaaand Jochen just died of hypothermia. But at least he didn't drown and Jacky didn't have to kill him🤷♂️😅
Aaaaand Nelson just stabbed Jacky to death.
Which means Nelson wins🤗
Wow. I had totally given up hope for Nelson not to fall into a pit and for Jochen not to drown.
Patrick Depailler (August 9th, 1944 – August 1st, 1980)

Some F1 photos that I love, taken by Ercole Colombo. part 1 (B/W)
Ercole Colombo is an Italian photographer, mainly known for his stunning motorsports photographs; he has spent more than 40 years wandering around the F1 paddocks and that's where he had the chance to meet and witness with his photos the various talents that graced the older generation of Formula 1.
