Gentle reminder to:
never get those tiny 1,2,3 or 4 gallon tanks for fish. Fish are not decorations! They are living creatures that require a lot of care and room! Do not pull a sea world pro-gamer move.
Depending on the fish you plan to get, you need to get a proper tank size!
Get a filter that’s works with the species you’re considering! Some filters create heavy water flow and may throw your fish around or not meet your fishes needs! Vice verse for gentle water flow.
Get a heater if you are getting tropical fish!
Fish can get sick and require medicine! Get medicine ahead of time so you aren’t scrambling with fighting disease!!
Make sure the fish you want to add to your tank can live in the same conditions as other tank mates!
If you are not certain with how big you need your tank to be, write down all the fish you’d like in the tank (that can all live together, mind you), research how big they can get and then go to a specialty fish store and talk to the people there or people online. Reddit fish communities help a lot.
Use water conditioner. Use water conditioner. USE WATER CONDITIONER
Learn to water change, how often you need to do it and get a bucket if you get a big tank
live plants are recommended but not necessary
you can support fish breeders online. The fish are more likely to be healthier.
be weary about pettubers. If you go to youtube for info, make sure to double check information. Avoid and/or be weary pettubers who seem flashy. Paul Cuffaro is a good example of a bad fish youtube channel.
Also forgot to say this but some peoplr promote this idea of betta sorority. This is a controversy because bettas are semi-agressive and will fight another betta in a tank with them. Although some people have been able to host betta sororities successfully, there are also stories of there being bloodbaths within a tank. Because of this, many say betta sororities invite disaster and unneeded stress to the fish while others say if you get a huge tank, provide enough places for them to go and hide and other species of fish as a distraction, bettas won’t fight eachother.
tl;dr: betta sororities have a lot of controversy.
