Jesse Kivel has been making indie rock music since the aughts, first in the hyper-literate band Princeton with his twin brother Matt and later in synth-dance-y Kisses. Now living in Maine and newly a dad, he recorded his best material yet in the second solo album, Life and Death at Party Rock. A lot of times we focus on the recorded version of a song, but in this case, Bobby makes a simple song transform into a technical feat of emotion and beauty.

Oasis was the band that changed everything for me. My brother and I would pretend to be Noel and Liam, snarling and playing Noel’s simple yet powerful solo's. We also snagged all of their live concert videos, including this one. Nothing beats Liam’s swagger in this moment and the energy and excitement this group could bring.

Alessi Brothers — Seabird (live)

This song was on a compilation or mixtape I received a while back. Gorgeous vibes and perfect to play in the early evenings. Also, keeping up with the brother/identical twin theme that has defined my life and creative output.

Linda McCartney — Seaside Woman

One of my wife Zinzi’s favorite songs, this tune has incredibly energy and feel. The lyrics are a touch problematic, and I truly can't be sure that Paul didn't write this one. He is basically singing through the entire thing, and it sounds like his vibe. Regardless, it is a lovely tune and I really like Linda’s solo record.

Beck — Guess I'm Doing Fine: Sea Change

Easily my favorite Beck record. It speaks to some of the natural textures and feelings I was trying to put on my new LP. This record reminds me of visiting a college in Atlanta. I slept over on campus and this record helped me sleep in a strange/unknown environment.

Don Gibson — Sea of Heartbreak

An iconic and classic tune, covered by everyone from Jonny Cash to Van Morrison. Gorgeous and simple, like many of those late 50’s/early 60’s tunes of yesteryear.

Phil Phillips & The Twilights — Sea of Love

I am 38 so most of my friends and peers know the Cat Power version of this. I have love for that cover as it exposed me to the original. I love the crisp and focused way the original is recorded. Eerie and slightly haunting, it is a beautiful tune.

Jesse Kivel — Overgrown Ocean

I would be nothing if not a shameless self-promoter :) This song is about visualizing myself crashing down into Penobscot Bay on a Cape Air Cessna. I wrote the lyrics to this song on my first flight with Cape Air which was incredibly foggy and overwhelming. As we cut through the clouds, an overwhelming calm reached me, and the lyrics are a meditation on death and finding peace with it.

Dennis Wilson — Pacific Ocean Blues

Growing up in Southern California, all I can say is I can relate to Dennis and the blues that often can accompany living in the region. The relentless sun and lack of seasons can really do someone in. Dennis, to his credit, correctly points out over and over in this song that the Pacific Ocean is blue. I appreciate his clear-eyed perception here.

Wilco + Billy Bragg — The Secret of The Sea

Wilco and Billy Bragg both have loomed large in my early musical education. Separately with their early records and then this Woody Guthrie collaboration. My brother and I went to Tulsa to visit Guthrie's museum a few years ago. While the Dylan one was put together more tastefully, I just remember relating to Guthrie as all his notebooks had endless amounts of mundane lists. This captured my heart as this is essentially all I do with my notebooks as well.

How the ‘Baywatch’ Swimsuit Became a Summer Classic

At the height of its popularity, the 1990s TV show “Baywatch” was bringing in 1.1 billion worldwide weekly viewers. It made Pamela Anderson and Carmen Electra famous, revived (again) the career of David Hasselhoff and inspired a 2017 movie. Now the series can be handily retrieved on Amazon Prime and Hulu — in high definition and with 350 new original songs added to the score to help draw in millennial viewers. But what about “Baywatch” is most memorable, lasting and important?

Its red one-piece swimsuit.

Of late Kylie Jenner, Selena Gomez, Hailey Bieber and Jennifer Lopez have all posted snapshots wearing “Baywatch”-esque suits on social-media feeds, inspiring fans to swap their bikinis for maillots.

“It’s awesome to see people now embracing that fashion, oftentimes tagging it as ‘Baywatch,’” said the actress Kelly Packard, who made several appearances in the series before landing the reoccurring role of April Giminski in seasons 8 and 9. She follows #baywatch on Instagram and said she sees “thousands” of posts on the subject a day.

Brian Davis, designer of Magicsuit swimwear, created the Scuba Blake one-piece, a modern twist on the Baywatch suit for the 2019 swimwear season. He said it has sold briskly, priced at $168. “As a swimwear designer it is impossible not be inspired and influenced by the iconic ‘Baywatch’ swimsuit,” Mr. Davis said. “Who can forget the image of Pamela Anderson and Yasmine Bleeth running down the beach, hair flying in the wind, clad in that hot cherry red one-piece?”

Who indeed?

The suit has been trending for at least two years. Ashley Graham’s Swimsuits for All released an ad to promote its 2017 summer line, which featured Ms. Graham and the models Niki Taylor and Teyana Taylor as lifeguards. The company offers its customers myriad variations of one-pieces, many of which encompass the high leg opening and scoop neck that defined the “Baywatch” look.

Chromat also showed several versions of a red one-piece in its lifeguard-themed “Pool Rules” campaign, which promoted the company’s inclusive sizes and styles.

Also in 2017, a high-waisted suit called the Pamela Sunny Suit made by Sunny Co Clothing and priced at $99.99 had 50,000 orders in 29 minutes after an Instagram giveaway campaign, according to the company, since selling over 100,000. People understandably thought the name was a nod to Pamela Anderson, the most famous star of “Baywatch.” But Alan Alchalel, Sunny Co Clothing’s founder and C.E.O., insisted this was not so.

“Our suits get named after the first person to model it for us,” he said. “Ironically the girl’s name was Pamela.”

In the Beginning

The official “Baywatch” swimsuits were inspired by those worn by real lifeguards on beaches in Southern California. Greg Bonann, a creator of the series and lifeguard himself, enlisted TYR, a competitive swimwear company, for help with the design. “I wanted them to be real and practical and actually work in the surf,” Mr. Bonann said.

The company created a red one-piece bathing suit as the wardrobe’s template, then took measurements of each actress playing a lifeguard. The goal, Mr. Bonann said, was to flatter each star’s body — for example, putting Alexandra Paul’s athletic frame “in a high neck suit with bare shoulders,” while shorter cast members like Erika Eleniak, Ms. Packard and Ms. Electra, were given higher-cut legs to fake the appearance of height.

The suits were then outfitted with official “Baywatch Lifeguard” patches. “The red bathing suit has absolutely no meaning whatsoever without a patch on it,” Mr. Bonann said. “As far as the real lifeguard is concerned, that is the iconic thing.”

Michael Berk, another creator of the show, said. “We never tried to be sexy intentionally. It was all about athletics and functionality.” This was also the case with the famous slow-motion run, an idea that came from Mr. Bonann after he filmed the Olympic hundred-yard dash runners in slow motion to show off their athleticism. “When we did our original music video that we did to sell ‘Baywatch,’ we were filming the lifeguards sprinting to the rescue in slow motion to build up the tension,” Mr. Berk said. “And suddenly it became this very sexy thing.”

Throughout the years, the “Baywatch” suits took on many different iterations; Speedo, JAG and Kiwi Swim all contributed designs. Necklines got lower, legs got higher and versions appeared with variations like zippers in the front. “We stuck with the authentic style but we tweaked it and made it more exciting than what is standard wear for the lifeguard,” said Karen Braverman Freeman, a costume designer for the show.

The cast of a “Rookie School” subplot, which included Ms. Electra, started in a black version of the one-piece. When the show went to Hawaii, Mr. Bonann had yellow suits commissioned. In addition, there were sometimes separate suits for water stunts and land. “It would be indistinguishable to most people except to the girl who was wearing it that the water suit was much tighter than the beach suit,” he said.

‘It Just Stretched and Pulled’

Almost three decades after the show’s premiere, the “Baywatch” cast looked back fondly in phone interviews on their days in the red suit.

Ms. Eleniak said she’s been a “one-piece girl” since her time on “Baywatch.” “I haven’t worn a bikini in probably 30 years.”

Ms. Electra laughed as she remembers her initial encounter with the swimsuit, which she had admired as a fan of the series before landing the role of Lani McKenzie in 1997. The actress had no idea she’d be asked to put the suit on during her audition read with Mr. Hasselhoff, and having rushed over from the set of MTV’s “Singled Out,” she admits to having slipped into the suit with unshaved legs. “I was like, ‘Oh, I hope they don’t see that!’” she said.

Ms. Packard became a regular later in the series, when she says the suits had transitioned from a traditional lifeguard look to “a swimsuit that was barely covering anything.” After struggling to keep the back from riding up while filming, she was directed to an on-site trailer to pick out another suit, settling on one that Ms. Paul had previously worn.

Ms. Anderson said modesty was not an issue for her but confirmed that the suits were pretty fitted. “Some people bring me bathing suits to sign autographs on and they are these big bathing suits and I say, ‘Listen, my bathing suit was tiny. It just stretched and pulled onto your body,’” she said.

And while Nicole Eggert, who played Summer Quinn, recalled that wearing the Baywatch wardrobe made her feel “proud and powerful,” there was a downside: the tan lines. It was as if “I wore a white one-piece when I was naked all the time,” she said.

Those involved with “Baywatch” said they were thrilled to see suits inspired by the show on beaches today.

Ms. Anderson is proud to still fit in her original suit and admits to slipping into it every now and then, if the mood strikes, surprising whomever she’s dating. “I jump in the shower with a bathing suit and then jump on them wherever they are in the house, soaking wet,” she said.

Ms. Electra has taken a more curatorial approach. “I have my suit framed and when people come over to the house, they get really excited,” she said. “It just has this effect on people. It was empowering.”

Deeming the suit’s shade of red a powerful and heroic hue, Mr. Berk said that he’s working with Pantone, the color standards company, to make “Baywatch Red” a proprietary shade.

And while waistlines of two-pieces may rise and fall, Ms. Eggert thinks the “Baywatch” suit’s particular cut will never go out of style. “It’s a little bit more interesting than your average bikini. It’s not just about the body,” she said. “It’s sexy without being too revealing so it works on all body types.”

Ms. Packard said, “The fact that it’s still a trend to wear a one-piece speaks volumes because prior to ‘Baywatch,’ I think there was this notion that to look sexy, you had to wear a string bikini.”

Ms. Anderson suggested that “maybe it was the people in the bathing suit that made it more exciting,” before noting that the show represented a time of youth and innocence that the suit continues to embody. “And we were kind of the California dream.”

Mr. Bonann, who today serves as an instructor to junior lifeguards, says his charges are given both a red one and two-piece and much prefer the one-piece.

“One of my girls just got a job as a real lifeguard and was telling me how excited she was to be wearing her red one-piece bathing suit and that she had worn it all day around her house that day,” he said. “So the red one-piece bathing suit is still iconic. Even to the real lifeguards themselves.”

Johnfav things: easily the most fascinating beatle, nose &  legit like the songs he wrote (at least during his beatles era). for all his faults and complexities he’s rather sympathetic and i think  he’s very human which is something i appreciate. as much as he cud be a terrible person often, i’d like to believe he wanted to be better in some ways. also he’s a cat person and i think his drawings are cuteleast fave things: performative activism, inconsistent attractiveness (certain eras were just bad honestly), obvious Wrong Doings that have been discussed repeatedly on this website, pettyness, total edgelord, can be cruel at times

Paulfav things: i love pauls songwriting and the sense of fun and whimsy he has in his writing. i like his eyebrows obviously. i like his very strong work ethic. i like his mashed potato vid. also idc what John may say, i love paul’s music hall-ass granny music!!! least fav things: uhm not to stir up controversy but i always thoght his strict adherence to traditional family structure was weird (in addition his seeming inability to remain single and alone) and also  Peta????? hmmm…. and mullets and billy shears and ok this is semi political b ut i wud never accept knighthood ever.

BB19 First Impressions

Side note: I was supposed to do this straight after the first episode, but three have gone by now and I've been keeping up with the feeds so I'm a bit more biased now... I'll try to mainly put what I remember my feelings being from the first episode. Christmas: a freaking BEAST. I am HERE for a strong woman who is so accomplished. Hope she knows the bb game. Hope she ends up in a girls alliance. Cameron: typical bb player, an Ian and Steve knockoff but I liked Ian and felt iffy about Steve, I don't like Cameron. He feels... off... I little too conceited Matt: oh hot DAMN. He is the most attractive guy in the house. Holy crap. AND he seems sweet and genuine and smart. Gonna stan him forever (unless he says some dumb shit). Elena: i feel quite conflicted about her... like I read that she is a trump voter and let me tell ya, that ruins her. But, she does know how to make herself very likeable. I feel like she'll have tea a lot making me not love her but appreciate her being there Kevin: my #1 stan! As soon as I saw the vid of his daughters online I was HOOKED. He is gonna be ICONIC. I'll admit his intros were weird, but I get that it's hard to be normal with a camera shoved in ur face. Can't wait to quote him all season! Needs to learn the same lesson as my brother to slow down and enunciate when speaking tho, but I really like her even if she flops, I think I'd be friends with her if I knew her. Ramses: I love him. Man he's into cosplay?! My kind of guy! And tho he's the token gay™ of the season, he is also quirky and original and NOT Frankie grande which is good Megan: I think I like her... I don't know. She seems like the kind of girl that's often overlooked. She doesn't stick out in my mind. Jillian: also prob a trump supporter and I'm not here for dumb blondes (she got surgery in fucking Tijuana for petes sake, how dumb can u be?) on a side note, she looks like analeigh ashford from Legally Blonde the musical Jason: SPEAKING of trump supporters, holy hannah, if this man isn't a trump supporter I will stop watching bb. He seems so annoying cuz I know he doesn't watch the game. Bonus: Paul: omg of all the players to come back, it had to be him. I mean it could have been worse, but it also could have been Bridgette who I'd LOVE to see again. Hope the cast isn't dumb enough to let him to the end again. Well, lets see how much I am cursing myself for not supporting/hating the right people from the beginning when we get to the end!

The latest episode of Shane Dawson’s Jake Paul docuseries promised to explore the vloggers alleged QUOTE “enemies.” Right off the bat, we knew that was exactly what we were going to get because mere seconds into the ep, Shane tells viewers and Andrew that former Team 10 COO, Nick Crompton, has agreed to sit down for an interview. Bring on the tea. Shane meets Nick at an undisclosed location, which turns out to be a seriously incredible mansion, but I digress. Seriously though, it’s incredible.ANYWAY, once they’re together, Shane doesn’t waste any time asking Nick the one question everybody wants to know the answer to when it comes to Team 10… Is it all real? Nick’s ready to set the record straight once and for all. Though the was hesitant to come right and say that the majority of what we see is fake, he also tells Shane that the truth QUOTE “fixes a lot of problems, especially some of the big problems where people just think something that’s not true,” and he’s totally talking about the Martinez twins. Although the Martinez twins left Team 10, citing abuse as a main reason as to why, Nick sets the record straight revealing that the pranks that had supposedly led to them leaving were all fake- the twins were in on it, he says. So the Martinez twins saying Jake and crew trashed their room? Is your mind blown yet? And again, according to Nick, they QUOTE “don’t want to tell everyone that everything is fake, so we just keep taking these hits.” And sure there are two sides to every story, but based on this interview alone, Nick seems like a really stand up guy. But while the pranks themselves are allegedly scripted, Andrew mindfully points out that there is plenty of video evidence showing Jake saying really horrible things about the team members…bullying them, and while it might be lighthearted or part of the act like the pranks are, how much of that kind of verbal abuse can someone really take before they start feeling attacked? Even if it’s a joke? That said, if what Nick says is true and the Martinez twins were in on the pranks that they then claimed was a complete surprise to them both, then that’s pretty messed up too. So basically, we still have a lot to learn about Jake and as Nick explains to Shane QUOTE “understand the why to the what,” and whoo, are we ready to understand the why, am I right? And it’s still just the tip of the Jake Paul iceberg because Shane reveals at the end of part 4 that Alissa Violet’s ready to tell her side of the story come part 5 so it’ll be interesting to find out from her what of her and Jake’s dynamic was real or what was fake… Patiently waiting for part 5.
