“The more I wrote, the more I realized mere words were not enough. So I found another form of expression.”

All my life I have been acutely aware of a contradiction in the very nature of my existence. For forty-five years I struggled to resolve this dilemma by writing plays and novels. The more I wrote, the more I realized mere words were not enough. So I found another form of expression.

SUBLIME CINEMA #308 - CAT PEOPLE
Along with Mishima, Cat People is one of Paul Schrader’s most visually arresting movies, doused in red, with an eerie 80′s hyersaturated vibe - the cougars dyed black because leopards were impossible to train. Ferdinando Scarfiotti did production design on this, and it’s gorgeous.

The other night, that night I met you at the hotel, I was with a woman. Somebody's mother. Her husband didn't care about her any more. This woman hadn't had an orgasm in maybe ten years. It took me three hours to get her off. For a while there, I didn't think I was gonna be able to do it. When it was over, I felt like I'd done something, something worthwhile. Who else would've taken the time or cared enough to do it right?

STELLAN SKARSGÅRD as FR. LANKESTER MERRIN in DOMINION: PREQUEL TO THE EXORCIST (2005), DIR. PAUL SCHRADER
[Stellan] wasn’t happy [about redoing the movie with a different director, Renny Harlin]. It must have been lucrative. He and Renny are friends, and worked together [on Deep Blue Sea]. Obviously, he got paid, and he did a different performance. One of the fascinating things about the two movies [DOMINION and EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING (2004)] was that it’s not only a different directing style; it’s a different acting style. In my film, he was playing this sort of tormented, Max Von Sydow/Ingmar Bergman sort of character. In [Harlin’s film], he played Harrison Ford. — PAUL SCHRADER (2005)
