Weekly Inspiration: Paul Brouns

Paul is a Dutch artists that works primarily with a camera and computer. He looks for rhythm, color and geometry when photographing architecture for his work. He creates composites out these images by taking different elements from each photo and combining them to create something new. His work heavily features windows or staircases. Paul likes to push the boundaries of what is real and what is designed on a computer. Most of his work is photographed from a straight on to create a flat two dimensional feel. He finds that his work to have more impact by removing distracting elements like surrounding buildings, trees and street lights. He likes to only include a small amount of sky or ground in his images as well. He will often include a human subject to bring a sense of reality back to his work. Paul also creates more three dimensional images by photographing certain elements from all angles and later making a composite out of them. I included an example of this style above. In this example, he photographed a balcony from all angles and designs the final image in an abstract way that creates a surreal feel.
