I’m so glad the Guillermo Del Toro Pinocchio movie is being received really well, because it was literally my most anticipated movie of the year! So here’s some fun facts about the crew, concept, and production that got me excited about this movie and that I think would excite much of tumblr as well:
-the screenplay was cowritten by Del Toro and Patrick McHale, creator of Over The Garden Wall and a writer on Adventure Time.
-the movie was codirected by Mark Gustasfon, who was the animation director of Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
-the primary art/animation designers of this movie (production designer Curt Enderle, art director Robert DeSue, character designer Georgina Hayns, animation supervisor Brian Leif Hansen, and photography director Frank Passingham) previously worked on projects that include Coraline, the Corpse Bride, Paranorman, Isle of Dogs, Frankenweenie, Kubo, and Chicken Run.
-Besides Netflix, it was produced by the Henson company (always a good sign when you’re doing anything with puppets) and ShadowMachine, who have produced a lot of Adult Swim shows including Robot Chicken, Moral Orel, and Tuca and Bertie, as well as the Netflix original BoJack Horseman.
-Del Toro was inspired to make this adaptation due to the similarities he’d always noticed between the original Pinocchio story and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Both are about a man-made character’s relationship with his father/creator, and his attempts to understand what it means to be human. This inspiration is why the film takes on a gothic feel at times.
-the movie is over 10 years in the making. Del Toro announced the project in 2008 and production began in 2012, but it went into development hell and no further updates were made for several years. Del Toro has described it as his passion project, saying "I've wanted to make this movie for as long as I can remember.”
-the backdrop of Mussolini’s Italy was intended to show how Pinnochio was able to find his own humanity and will in a time where everyone else was acting like a blindly obedient puppet. Del Toro wanted to deviate from the original book’s themes of obeying authority by making his Pinocchio virtuous for questioning the rules and forging his own set of morals. (Also if you know anything about Del Toro, the guy likes to dunk on fascism.)
-Del Toro didn’t feel the need to have Pinocchio become flesh-and-blood at the end of the movie, saying all you need to be a real human is to behave like one.
I was lucky enough to see this movie in 35 mm in a movie theatre on Thanksgiving weekend. If there are any movie theatre showings near you and you’re in a position to be able to attend them, I would totally recommend it especially if you can go with loved ones. It was a gorgeous, heartwarming, and magical movie to experience on a big screen and perfect for the late fall/winter holiday season.

All of the rocky movies are on Netflix so I’ve been skim watching them and I truly think the greatest flaw of the character rocky balboa is not taking his brother in law out back with a baseball bat and beating him with it until something turned into pulp

HOWEVER, the concept of Sonic having a robot dad with a pet Chao is something I cannot just ignore

A BIG MAN A BIG MAN ANOTHER NOTHER BIG MAN
It’s about time I made a reference sheet for him! Which means now a few small things about him:
Paulie is a pilot and loves his job! His old plane, the Tornado was given to as a birthday gift but sonic said tails would be better suited to handle it. Now paulie has a new plane based on his old airplane from years ago that he lost called the Hurricane. He mostly uses it for his work of a private plane to help people get to certain places or for deliveries. But he likes to travel a bit with it to with Brenda and Tania when sonic and tails are out on adventures.
Despite his super strength and his sometimes intimidating looks, paulie is a gentle giant who wouldn’t hurt a fly. He hates fighting worried he’ll severely hurt someone and rather try and work things out. But when it comes to eggman’s robots and henchmen he’s willing to throw a punch or two which can or will permanently damage the target.
His nickname “Roly Poly” used to be a teasing name from bullies that would pick on his large size. Didn’t help that he would roll into a ball and spindash away when he got scared. But Brenda ended up making it a pet name since roly polys are the nickname for pill bugs which she finds super cute. Plus she loves paulie for who he is including his large figure so that helped boost his self confidence by a mile.
Paulie always says he doesn’t have favorites when it comes to his kids. But it’s clear that if he did, it’d be tails. Paulie was the one to inspire tails to get into air flight and is the only one to handle his bites when tails was a baby. Both of them were/are bullied for their physical appearance and their interests being seen as “nerdy” so then both connect to each other that way.
Finally he will make a big appearance in Diamond in the Rough! Hope y’all enjoy him!

I think it's actually kinda fascinating how popularly represented Leonardo Da Vinci is, especially how he shows up in so many seemingly random movies, shows and games? Like yeah he's in anime, yeah he's in assassins creed, yeah he's in the drew barrymore cinderella movie. There's a teenage mutant ninja turtle named after him.
Yes yes !! Honorable mentions also include:
Leonardo da Vinci: Detective (short story by Theodore Mathieson about him solving murder during his time in France.)
Medici guns and subsequent books which follows Leonardo in a James Bond like action spy role
Tumblr media
Nothing Left to Do but Cry starting Roberto Benigni— basically time travel happens and these two stumble into Leonardo’s life and alter history
Tumblr media
He shows up in the Tick
Tumblr media
He shows up in mr Peabody and Sherman but y’all know me enough to know that
Tumblr media
Honestly I prefer his concept art designs
Leonard from genshin impact is apparently somewhat based off Leonardo
Tumblr media
He was in Nobunga the fool
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He even got his own Pauly Shore Pinocchio-tier movie (yes he’s turned straight in this)
But my personal favorite aside from ass creed will still be Marvel’s take on him. It’s so weird. It’s so funny to me. He founded shield and there’s a league of immortal historical figures he’s a part of, including Tesla and Zhangheng. And he creates a robot clone of himself to live out the rest of his days on earth while he did other shit. He meets Riri Williams
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why is he sooooooo slutty in this like,,
Tumblr media
I have a theory that marvel wanted to pump this secret historical society thing to catch onto the hype of assassin’s creed since ac2 came out in 2009 and this was mostly emerging in 2010 but idk

I just watched the Family Guy clip that features "the robot from Rocky IV" and then had to watch the actual clip and yeah there is a robot in Rocky IV. How did Lou feel about that scene?
Okay so big spoilers for the Rocky series ahead because this is going to be such a long answer.
Rocky IV was so fucking out of left field it actually made me put my monthly Rocky movie watch on pause.
Okay so there is a lot going on with this movie that make it so very distinctly 80’s and at the heart of this 80’s-ness is the overbearing influence of the Cold War. It is a Cold War movie. It’s a primary source for life in America during the Cold War. It’s… so very very rough.
First of all of course there’s a lot of anti-Russo sentiment but there’s also just a very insane display of wealth, very much like the kind of vibe that made the Rocky series (imo) kind of a tragedy in I-III. Because the wealth and status of celebrity had been chipping away at Rocky slowly and slowly and he had been losing himself and his personage and humanity and his passion and his ability to sustain and nurture his close interpersonal relationships. But in Rocky IV when he flaunts his wealth it’s suddenly shown to be a positive thing and not in complete contradiction to what the movies have shown us so far up to this point.
This shift in focus is very clearly supposed to reinforce the western capitalistic idea that financial success and pointless consumerism are necessary for actual happiness, because Rocky needed that good ol’ Americana reprieve from those darn Ruskies. And so the robot that he buys (which very weirdly becomes like a wife for Paulie, because I guess no living broad would take him) is a very tacky and very VERY 1980’s manifestation of this newfound positive spin on consumerism in the Rockyverse.
Not only is the new view on money already insane enough, but Rocky’s view on death and mourning also take such an insane and disorienting turn in this film. In Rocky III, when his trainer Mick died, it put Rocky’s entire life on pause. He couldn’t talk to anyone, he couldn’t fight, and he began to lose touch with who he was. The pain of that loss overwhelmed him and this set a very profound bar for Rocky’s relationship with grief. It’s established that grief is debilitating for him, and that it takes time for him to recover and begin to cope. However in Rocky IV, when his best friend Apollo dies, it’s a completely different story. He’s immediately hopeful for the chance to avenge him, and ready to hop into the ring.
I think that the forced patriotism of the movie creates a disappointing blind spot for the narrative, because nothing about the first three Rocky movies pointed in the direction for ANY of what happens in Rocky IV. And I think that the robot is the perfect example of how nonsensical this installment was to the series.

In the late 1960s, Burt Young dashed off a letter to Lee Strasberg, who ran the Actors Studio in New York, hoping to be taken on as a student. “Seriously, Lee, I don’t know if acting has anything for me, or vice versa, but I’m treading water,” he wrote. “So see me.”
The letter was intended to curry favour with a woman whom Young was trying to impress, and whose dream it was to study with Strasberg. Both she and Young were invited to audition. She quit after drying up during her first acting class but Strasberg was impressed by the stubby, paunchy Young, telling him: “You have huge tension about you. I feel you’re an emotional library.”
Less than a decade later, Young, who has died aged 83, found fame playing Paulie Pennino, the gormless, rough-and-tumble butcher who is brother-in-law to the aspiring prizefighter Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) in the rags-to-riches hit Rocky (1976).
“I thought the script had the cleanest street prose I’d ever read,” said Young. Among the film’s 10 Oscar nominations was one for him as best supporting actor. It won three prizes, including best picture.
In Young’s hands, Paulie was roguishly endearing as well as exasperating. The actor described him as “all burly on the outside and all quicksand inside”. Paulie’s tenderness toward Rocky is forever being complicated by his jealousy at the boxer’s success. Any initial tension or piquancy in the drama, however, was diluted by a stream of sequels in which Stallone and Young reprised their roles. One low-point was Rocky IV (1985), which begins with Paulie receiving a robot butler as a gift from Rocky, whose success has made him profligate. Paulie modifies the robot to give it a female voice.
He is last seen in the sixth instalment, Rocky Balboa (2006), where he is once again the boxer’s corner-man. The character’s death is alluded to in the spin-off Creed (2015), in which Young does not appear.
Paulie was typical of many of the roles that came Young’s way: you could hear the hair growing in their ears, smell the stink on their singlets, feel their brain cells dying. In Back to School (1986), for instance, he played a tough-guy chauffeur described by the hero, played by the comic Rodney Dangerfield, as “an animal. In his family, he’s only the second generation to stand upright.”
For Young, it was never that simple. In Robert Aldrich’s vulgar cop comedy The Choirboys (1977), his turn as a cackling sergeant was singled out by the Washington Post as “human and appealing”. Cast as the flawed, the coarse or the criminal in films such as Sergio Leone’s gangster epic Once Upon a Time in America (1984) or Alan Alda’s whimsical Betsy’s Wedding (1989), he allowed a rumpled warmth to shine through the cracks, his actorly intelligence informing every choice.
Esteemed co-stars respected his craft. Jack Nicholson shared a scene with Young at the start of Roman Polanski’s neo-noir thriller Chinatown (1974), and was said to have greatly admired the actor and to have used him as the model for the laconic hood he played in Prizzi’s Honour (1985).
James Caan, with whom Young first worked on the shore-leave love story Cinderella Liberty (1973), wangled parts for him in The Gambler (1974), inspired by (though not adapted from) the Dostoevsky novella of the same name, and The Killer Elite (1975). The latter was the first of two films that Young made for the director Sam Peckinpah, the other being the action-comedy Convoy (1978).
“Everybody was scared of [Peckinpah],” said Young. “The studios were scared of him. The other actors. And so they would go through me, because I had no fear of nobody.”
It was Aldrich who became Young’s friend and loyal collaborator, directing him in The Choirboys, the nuclear-age thriller Twilight’s Last Gleaming (1977) and …All the Marbles (1981), a salty comedy about female wrestling released outside the US as The California Dolls.
A 1978 Esquire magazine profile dwelt on the actor’s history of juvenile delinquency and general criminality, noting that his life was “lifted right out of the pages of Damon Runyon”.
He was born in Queens, New York. His birth name has been listed variously as Gerald De Louise and Richard Morea, with Burt Young the name he adopted once he became an actor. His mother, Josephine, and father, Michael, an ice-delivery man and sheet metal worker who later trained as a teacher, tried to improve his chances by sending him to Bryant high school, an establishment in a better neighbourhood, but he was soon expelled. He attended St Anne’s academy, from which he was also ejected.
At 16, he joined the Marines, served tours of duty in Japan and the Philippines, and developed an aptitude for boxing. After a dishonourable discharge, he returned to New York and boxed professionally, training under the renowned Cus D’Amato and Charley Goldman. Fighting under three different aliases, he claimed to have amassed a record of 17 wins to one loss.
He became a truck driver, managed a silk-screen printing business that went bankrupt, part-owned a bakery and a bar, and worked for his brother’s Manhattan carpet-cleaning firm, before starting an outlet of his own in Queens. He later opened his own restaurant, Burt Young’s Il Boschetto, in the Bronx.
His first acting jobs included parts in the daytime soap The Doctors (1969) and the crime comedy The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight (1971). Over more than half a century, he accumulated around 160 movie and TV credits including The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984) with Mickey Rourke, a harrowing adaptation of Hubert Selby Jr’s Last Exit to Brooklyn (1989), the Hugh Grant comedy Mickey Blue Eyes (1999), which reunited him with Caan, and Transamerica (2005), in which he was the father of a trans woman played by Felicity Huffman.
He also wrote and starred in two films: the TV movie Daddy, I Don’t Like It Like This, about a boy whose father tries to toughen him up, and the sentimental Uncle Joe Shannon (both 1978), in which he played a bereaved trumpeter. In recent times, Young devoted much of his life to painting.
One of his most wrenching performances was in a 2001 episode of the HBO series The Sopranos. He played an ageing hoodlum, dying of cancer and grateful to be given one final hit to carry out. The assignment ends unforgettably in blood and bathos.
Crime was an area he felt he might have lapsed into were it not for the approval he received from Strasberg. “I come from that life,” he said. “To this day, two of my best friends are doing 100 years.”
But he was acting well into his dotage. “Rather than flying high, I’m wide,” he said in 2002. “I still have ambition, but I’m slow. I’ll never be Tom Cruise.”
Nor would anyone have wanted him to be: there was more character in one grin or grimace from Young than in a dozen vehicles featuring sleeker, shinier stars.
He is survived by Anne, his daughter, from his marriage to Gloria, who died in 1974.
🔔 Burt Young (Gerald De Louise), actor, born 30 April 1940; died 8 October 2023

Not an ask: I am enjoying your Jules headcanons
i'm glad!! if you have anything you're curious about my perspective on feel free to ask!! he's a very good dad and i love him very much. here's some more! it got a little long lol
it's canon that jules was the first roboticized person, but in archie it was chuck who did it as an attempt to help. in my thing there's no involvement from chuck, so it's all eggman. jules got shot in a vital area while running from the invading swat bots trying to steal their children and got captured. he would've died if he weren't roboticized, so they can't really change him back, plus he's had too many repairs and part replacements over the years for it to leave him in a functional state
while foreign metal in the (de)roboticizer won't make it explode, it won't be turned back into organic material since it didn't have an organic counterpart to begin with. maybe it could guess with smaller bits like bolts or wiring, but it would probably be a bad idea to do that to someone who's likely had a good amount of his robo-guts replaced. the machine can only do so much
before he was a robot, jules (and his family by extension) were generally unremarkable. yeah he was athletic and surprisingly strong, but he didn't have powers. all the magic stuff his kids have came from aleena! her family is very involved with magic and it sort of became part of her, passing on to her children. sonic got his speed, sonia's got enhanced strength, and manic...
well... manic takes after his father
he really is the runt of the litter, but that's okay! he's got his own skills, and with his hoverboard they would make a perfectly balanced sonic heroes team
jules' full first name is julius. it stems from julianus, having latin roots meaning "father" and "young at heart", so i think it's pretty appropriate for him!
jules really has a lot of fatherly qualities, and he wants to do the best he can for his children, or any kids for that matter. he doesn't really know what he's doing, but at the very least he tries to not only be supportive but actively enthusiastic about everything his kids do, and he will readily adopt whatever friends they bring over into his little family unit. it doesn't matter how old they are, they're getting adopted. he treats shadow and scourge like part of the family as much as he does tails. family reunions kinda chaotic
jules is the youngest of four, and chuck is the oldest, so chuck pretty much raised him. there's a 13 year age gap there, so by the time chuck was ready to forge his own path, jules was like... 7. unfortunately mom died kinda early and dad was too broken from manual labor to do much on his own, paulie was pretty much running the farm, and bernie was kind of a wild child who took care of herself, so... yeah. off jules went with chuck. though not the best situation, they turned out okay (even if a younger jules annoyed the hell out of a younger chuck)

Let's see David's work they see David's work and they were calling Billy Hicks David and he was hitting Goliath and it was his grandpa and he said you like him that's a Pauli sure was saying. This is different what they're saying is thank you to my husband cuz they got these cars they get hit and it doesn't kill them right away and they're amazed and it's what the metal does it's just recycling your cars you throw the frame and the body in and voila outcomes metal that is nice and strong and it rust resistant or rust proof and they can't believe it it doesn't make any sense and it does really you're mixing steel with metal and a lot of cars are going to come out made with it. And it also is EMP resistant without all these doodads and these people keep insisting on which is terrifyingly bad and they're starting to learn but it is about the experience in Chile and after they go down there and it's coming up and they said this guy is trying all sorts of stuff and saying the max use these they got these balls and they might run cage you and it's terrible and people have to be all sorts of stuff has to happen the max are up to it but they're alone so the hard way might get split out you might fight robots nice and White satin and teju kju run by the computers which might be right here down below you in the planet core and the two sit alone and their house in the United Kingdom waiting to die just like they always have
Hera Zues
I did start saying this no but this is a two and they're effective is very very shocking people do feel bad for them and they feel bad for these two that's all they're doing sometimes and it doesn't seem it and he's got hope and he's trying to do that and everyone's berating him and beating on him it's disgusting so we're going to start working and get our stuff going today was a successful day and they managed to cut the fuel off and we are too there are some caverns that are out of control and we are going to mention it's the Sahara Saudi Arabia and a special note to Jason and he's going back there and sees it and he forgives everybody LOL and our son says just get me a fat bear I don't care if you make it yourself so we piggyback you and he starts laughing you don't have any place to put it I can put a lawn mower thing on it thanks about it and he wants me to shut up he says just make the lawn mower floating and all of a sudden he's quiet and doesn't want to talk about it. There's a lot of stuff going on but he's figuring out how it can work the whole thing would be on an angled spring-loaded contraption to push it down including the pulley so it moves up and down it would not mess with the pulley system and enough people have heard the stupid crap and stop talking about it.... And they're moving out and they do understand what he's saying and there are rivulets and all sorts of signs and keju are starting to move all over the world huge ones and yeah we notified of them they're taking them out of tunnels that the big huge worm is making

Hey, sorry If I come across as asking too much questions, but any disability (physical and mental) for your au?
Oh no problem I love answering things about my au! Here’s some of the ones I can think of at the top of my head:
Both Chuck and Shard have missing limbs. Chuck’s being his leg he lost in a battle with eggman. Shard’s hand never formed when he became organic for the first time because there was a blaster gun instead of a hand so nothing came from it. Both do have prosthetic robotic limbs but shard doesn’t really use his often since he’s so used to not having another arm. And chuck has a regular prosthetic leg and a wheelchair when his robot leg breaks down.
Paulie, Chuck, Aleena, Sonic, and Tails all have some form of autism with sonic also having adhd. Paulie and tails share a heavy love for aircraft and can and will go on ramblings about them if prompted. Sonic doesn’t express to much and can sometimes be hard to understand how he’s feeling.
Speaking of paulie, he is selectively mute. Which passed on in a way to sonic having him mute until he turned five. But paulie is mostly mute out in public or in unfamiliar areas. He is very much a chatter box when it comes to his family or close friends though. The entire family does know sign language because of this.
Tania was born very premature and has several health issues she needs to watch for. Mostly having to do with her lungs and asthma. Because of this Brenda is pretty much a stay at home mom now to keep an eye on Nia.
Undina of course has a wheel chair but pretty much all fish mobians need one.
Actually pretty much the entire SFF have autism now that I think about it. And of course the guy keeping an eye on them, Chuck has it to lmao.
That’s all I’m putting for now unless something changes in the future. Thanks for the ask!

Christopher: Hey Tony you heard about this fucking Roblox thing?
Tony: Roblox? That some science fiction thing? Is this another fucking movie project with Carmine jr?
Christopher: Nah man its a video game on the internet called a metaverse but they got users making their own games inside the game for company money, you know the top guys running this get 70%? All legal too, feds don't police that internet shit yet. Talking hundreds of products a week, we take 70% of it and pay them in vouchers or some shit meaning we take everything.
Paulie: You saying this is a big earner and its all above board? We gotta get in on this Tony.
Christopher: Yeah so we make our own metaverse maybe get AJ to build it because hes good with that internet stuff and because the creators are all kids...
Paulie: Wow wow, kids? That stinks of fucking child labor Chrissie!
Tony: Hold up! you saying this robot blocks metal verse thing is using kids to build what computer games? They can get away with that fucking legally?
Paulie: Telling you Tony its all going down hill, CEOs? Fucking sleezebags, I've hurt a lot of wise guys, some deserved it, some it was just business but child labor? That's a step too fucking far, just let kids be fucking kids ya know?
Christopher: Come on we need to get in on this guys, its not child labor their happy and shit making video games at home no ones getting hurt and we make money everyone wins here Paulie.
Tony: Paulies right, still fucking exploitation no matter which way you swing it. Not to mention the top guys make 70%? While they get 30% in what? Fucking disney bucks? Fuck that.

Cybertron first impressions after 2 episodes:
Pros:
-higher dub quality
-higher animation quality (though this sometimes makes the humans look out of place especially if there's a 3d background)
-some really interesting design choises (Starscream has purple eyes (wow), Megatron has some really appealing colors, Vector Prime at least looks old)
-characters have wonky faces. Sometimes it's funny
-Scattershot. His dialogue is so entertaining that I might learn to like his terrifying design. Maybe it's so bad it's good?
-A lot of characters have the same VAs as the earlier shows in the trilogy, which will be nice to latch onto until I get used to the style of the show
-Jetfire's design is really nice
-Starscream is still making noises. This is good. If Starscream is being played by Pauli Virta, he must make noises. (example of noises)
-Thundercracker. And he has an unique design!
-The montage of them leaving their base looks really cool (though it must take them an impractical amount of time to get outside)
-One of the kids is kind of ok
-Scattershot again. Because I like him
(Decepti)cons: (there is more good than bad, I just go into more detail here and also nitpick some things)
-weird yellow and purple explosions
-characters have wonky faces. Sometimes it just looks bad
-the humor really doesn't translate well
-I'd rather take bayverse Optimus design over whatever is going on with his mouth in this
-why even have multiple humans if they all react the same way to most things (the younger boy (still don't know their names) is a little more energetic and the girl gets offended over weird things but other than that they're mostly the same), are all chosen ones and all fill the role of the tech support character? They bickered a little in the first episode but after that they haven't really done anything that would require multiple characters. Maybe this will change in the future, but so far their reactions and personalities seem really shallow
-these human children are giving alien robots tech advice. And not just a few ideas here and there, no. One of the first things they do in the show is fixing up Landmine's wound. Then they go on to redesign their entire base floorplan and suggest adding a launch catapult. Having motocross as a hobby really doesn't cut it here as an excuse. They also know a suspicious amount about geology and how it can help hide a base. And the alien robots don't know all this for some reason?
-this is a dub thing, but isn't Vector Prime supposed to be old? He doesn't sound like he is
-I've seen gacha videos with better lipsync
Things I'm looking forward to:
-Soundwave and the birb are going to be in this
-Megatron is gonna say "Turpa kiinni!", which means "shut up" but is sort of worse (not swear level but still) and not something you'd expect in a kids' show
Also I can't take the intro seriously. Not just because of the meme and because I (used to) find it (the intro, not the meme) kind of cringe, but also because of an YTP that replaces "Maailmamme ovat vaarassa" ("Our worlds are in danger") with "Maailmamme ovat Vaasassa" ("Our worlds are in Vaasa")
