Dialect notes! Dialect notes! Dialect notes!

Because I missed my calling in academic research, I've spent a non-zero amount of time going down rabbit holes on early North American dialect for Along The Northern Heights. Is it worth doing all this research for a fanfiction of a PBS kids show from 20 years ago? Well it gives me considerable amounts of joy to write, so yes.

Anyway! I want to share a massive infodump, because writing gives me goodfeels and so does sharing! Please let me know if I am inaccurate or wrong about anything. I am not an academic and furthermore I do not want to spread misinformation.

MASSIVE WORD BLOCK UNDER THE CUT

A Pregame With Disclaimers About "Good" English

The history of Modern English is rife with Big Oof moments, and I'm not just talking about The Great Vowel Shift or Noah Webster deciding that the "u" in "colour" was silly. Especially in the late 18th century, there was a push to make accents more uniform and to establish a single "Good" English - and there is so much aggression towards what those scholars considered "Bad" English. And, in my extremely uneducated opinion, it seems like it's a conveniently moving target, just like "whiteness." In the context I'm in when writing, it positively reeks of shitting on any of the world's population groups that aren't Southeastern England. And, being from the United States, I know all too well the absolute shit that's been lobbed at AAVE for not being "Good" English.

This "Good" vs "Bad" way of looking at dialect is reductive, destructive, and boring, and I think it goes without saying I don't condone it in the slightest.

A Further Pregame With Received Pronunciation, or RP

the "generic" British dialect many of us outside the UK think of when we think of a British accent (a shame, I think, because the UK is so dialect-diverse and there are some absolute bangers on that damp island!) There are certainly a myriad of reasons for this, but probably the most common reasons/claims I've heard through my life are

A) 19th-century upper-class British folk wanting to have a more separate dialect from the other classes.

B) associations with the way the Royal Family has spoken English since at least Queen Victoria (a generic reasoning that we see happen along populations: imitating those in power)

C) 20th-century RP became "generic" in a similar way that the broad North American dialect* now associated with the United States and, to some degree, Canada, did - that is, it was further developed and use encouraged as the easiest to understand when recorded and played-back on period audio recording equipment (specifically radio and television.)

*a timeout is to be made here for the so-called Mid-Atlantic dialect at the dawn of "talkies" and early Hollywood. Its the delightful way of talking you'll hear in old black-and-white movies: slightly musical cadence, and combining the broad north american dialect with a bit of the non-rhoticity of RP. This dialect was mostly affectation and as anyone with living American relatives born before 1960 can tell you, mid-20th-century Americans largely did not speak it in normal settings.

Now, all of this is to say, RP as a dialect doesn't really appear until mid-19th century (although it would seem the loss of rhoticity we so associate with RP was a gradual shift starting in the very end of the 18th century.) Furthermore, the ways that we, 21st-century denizens, know RP don't come into their own until the 20th century and proliferation of audio-based mass media.

On to My Actual Point : 18th Century American Dialect (non-AAVE)*

*I make this distinction because the history of AAVE is a massive topic all on its own and I feel even less qualified to speak on it

It can't be ignored that the base strata making up Anglo-American speech patterns would have been as varied as where the original settlers/invaders came from, nor can it be ignored that the American Colonies were made up of more than just Anglo-Saxon descendants. Even back then, they were a mosaic of cultural interaction, which is why Thomas Paine declared America (at least the white part) a European, and not British, culture.

That being said, multiple primary sources indicate that the dialect of Anglo-Americans at the late 18th/very early 19th century was similar to "well-bred" Londoner dialect of the time (assuming there's enough of a distinction here from broad Southeastern UK,) and that this particular dialect was broadly spoken with less regional variance than the family of dialects in the UK.

This is made clear in vol 3 of Timothy Dwight's Travels in New-England and New-York, a collection of letters sent to colleagues in England:

"I shall not, I believe, offend against either truth or propriety if I say, that the English language is in this country pronounced more correctly than in England. I am not, indeed, sanguine enough to expect, that you will credit the assertion, nor that you will believe me to be a competent judge of the subject. Still I am satisfied that the assertion is true. That you may not mistake my meaning, I observe, that by a correct pronunciation I intend that of London; and, if you please, that of well-bred people in London."

(Dwight, Timothy. Travels in New-England and New-York vol 3 p 265)

Now in context he is only speaking of the New England region, and he does make a disclaimer here that he's not "a competent judge" of the subject, and we are certainly ignoring his hope that he won't be cited on the matter. But, his observation holds true from other primary accounts, especially William Eddis' Letters From America, which are composed of his observations (mostly of Maryland gentry) from 1769 to 1777. (His letters also happen to be an invaluable primary source for observations on culture and political commentary on the rising crisis between the colonies and Britain, from the perspective of a loyal well-to-do British subject.)

On the uniformity of language, Eddis has this to say:

"In England, almost every county is distinguished by a peculiar dialect; even different habits, and different modes of thinking, evidently discriminate inhabitants, whose local situation is not far remote; but in Maryland, and throughout the adjacent provinces, it is worthy of observation, that a striking similarity of speech universally prevails; and it is strictly true, that the pronounciation of the generality of the people has an accuracy and elegance, that cannot fail of gratifying the most judicious ear."

(Eddis, William. Letters from America, Historical and Descriptive. p 59)

if the odd comma placements are making it hard to read, you're not alone. 18th century writing is choc-full of what we might today consider run-on sentences, comma splices, or just generally cumbersome. Here's me paraphrasing as best I can:

"In England, almost every county has its own dialect, habits, and modes of thinking, noticeably different inhabitants that don't live very far from each other; but in Maryland and adjacent provinces, there is a notable similarity of speech, and its absolutely true that the generalized accent/pronunciation has an accuracy and elegance that won't fail to gratify a discerning ear."

All this background I'm giving comes to this point: late 18th-century "well-bred" Londoner is the dialect I have chosen to loosely base what I write in Along The Northern Heights. I listen to alot of Simon Roper's work on youtube regarding the topic. I would say these two are probably the most valuable videos on the accent.

He makes disclaimers about not being formally qualified to speak on linguistics, and I would be remiss to not pass along those disclaimers.

That being said, what's in my mind is pastiche of that, the local "country" (read: appalachian) dialect in rural Virginia, the dialect work used in Turn:Washington's Spies and HBO John Adams, as well as some of the dialect you hear in PBS Masterpeice's Poldark, and various media I've watched/read from Living History re-enactors about reconstructing dialect.

Since I've made it a headcanon feature that James Hiller has a bit of a brogue that he feels pressured to correct, but slips into when he is excited or upset, I'd like to dig more into less-"proper" dialects of the time, and, if possible, the less-proper Philly accent. For shits and giggles, here's what I suspect is a dramatization of a modern-day Philly accent:

Honestly? Hearing both of these warms the cockles of my heart, because my late grandparents (especially grandma. *Especially* grandma) spoke with a Baltimore accent, which has similarities with the Philly accent. My aunts and uncles all speak it; its been normalized and blended with a virginia rural accent in mine (I say wadder, my grandma said wooder. I say toosdaye, my grandma said toosdee. I say ahn, grandma said ooowan. I say y'all, grandma said all youse/all you. I say "d'jeet," she said d'jeet, and you can pull d'jeet from my cold dead hands.)

In addition, you have the modern-day "High Tide" dialect of Okracoke, the Carolina Brogue.

trouble with Carolina Brouge, which is disappearing, is that its got too much modern-day southeastern drawl to really use as a basis for an 18th century Philly boy. Though it does seem like drawing out the "A" in water into wooder/woader is a commonality.

Let me talk about my experience with nsfw.

11 or 9 years old:

When i used to do fun innocent things on google, i saw furry animated porn and typed "sexy furry" and the results were....pretty fucked up. I also saw uncensored irl porn videos as a kid and i was BLANK FACED. BLANK FACED, I'M NOT FUCKING KIDDING!

14/15 years old

When I stumbled across nsfw art again, I started drawing porn (never had discord), it started from oc nsfw to Cookie run nsfw then Btd6 nsfw and later on to My Singing Monsters nsfw (The thing i used to be well known for), i have been getting into drama and other.

16 years old (current age)

Alright, this is the biggest issue when it comes to nsfw, i joined the PB fandom for fun but i discovered things, all the drawings i found from rule 34, i start participating doing PB porn for fun, i drew Naked Nono (alt), Eluca masturbating while using his imagination, Obiss masturbating, Andy and Eluca fucking eachother, PB ass focus and Bunchy masturbating, i realized it was a bad idea and stopped doing it. Moving on to nsfw rps, yup....nsfw rps, i did erps in public but it was also fucked up, i was uncomfortable while doing this

Conclusion:

Porn and NSFW is bad for a kid, it might ruin their sight and get porn addiction, it's bad, disgusting and other things. And I have realized I'm still a minor.

Hey PB main mods, If you're reading this, I'm sorry for what I did and it's my fault, I'm trying to recover things.

For now on, I'll stop doing these types of things, i already broke my porn addiction.

Monster Drama Danger Tiers

Here I’ve organized all my OCs into handy categories to give an idea how I’d generally like them to be treated in any given plot.

However, please note that all is fair in crack roleplay: just be aware of course, that crack is not canon and not serious. You can also use anon to mess around and find out without consequence. Though if I feel you’re abusing crack rp to do nothing but avoid consequences, Imma cut you off.

Literal Cosmic Supergod

The Producer

This is a world ender. A reality bender of terrifying prepositions. It’s not even really a character as much as it is a force of destruction. For this reason, I am incredibly selective on who gets serious plots with this thing. A good rapport is required before I bring the Producer into our plots in any significant way. It can be defeated, but that would need to be in one hell of a big overarching plot, if you feel ambitious and also if I trust you.

Boss Monsters

The Gourmand, Static, Tabs, Altar, Ari, Jelly, Carbonia, Nil, Trash, Bittersworth, We

Boss monsters are also still extremely powerful, (but the Producer definitely needed a category to itself lol). I expect narrative gravitas given to these characters. They aren’t to be brushed off (by the plot; characters will behave ic to mess around and find out obviously). Think of them as final bosses. Defeatable, but needs a lot of building up, and probably with things to overcome before even reaching them. As well, I won’t allow the first several plots we get to be defeating one of these. Again, build up. As well, no one is guaranteed a “kill the boss” plot: it all depends on what’s narratively satisfying.

This is your standard character. Not OP like the boss monsters but still with a respectable level of bite or seriousness that forbids them from being a total punching bag by the narrative. Not much else to say. Just some guys.

Slugsworth, Maiden, Marinus, Huey, Sleezey, Wheezey, Cheezey, Dustdevil, Max, Null, Walter, Sebastian, Kattz, Scrapper, Roja, Chip, Zelle, Charlemagne, Rogue

These characters may be humiliated and trounced. Keep in mind, this doesn’t equate to these guys necessarily being pushovers. That may be the case, but what also might be the case is they are massive jerks who need comeuppance, or they’re chaotic stupid and need to be whacked with consequences. Keep in mind, even with these characters, I’m definitely going to get bored if interactions are nothing BUT humiliation.

She passed his hands behind his back, anti-magic handcuffs surrounding them. Checking their placing, she locked them. Sans could not tell if she was hating him. Perhaps she was blaming herself, too. Perhaps everyone was feeling a little responsible. At least, he hoped so.

"Why did you do that?" she sighed, rhetorically.

"I did it out of love." Sans simply replied.

"That's the stupidest excuse you could have chosen..."

Fast summary of the Story

Corrupted by the Lust, monsters live a hell everyday, sex and immorality being a daily routine. Sans is one of the most luxurious of them and then, the one who had always been the most disgusted by all of that. He lost hope. He lost will.

One day, while going to this giant purple door, he found a package. A human baby. And strangely, Sans felt... at peace.

Now, Sans has something to protect from this world. And he is not going to give up, even when everyone seems to be against him. But it might be easier than he thought: it seems that this little girl can change hearts...

At first, it was only a story "for fun" during a RP with a friend of mine. No true plot. A bit sad but fluff mostly. Cross was in a part of the RP too.

And then the RP stopped. I wanted to write this story on Wattpad and it became : "L'amour est permis malgré tout" in French. (I translated here in "Love is not forbidden" because the true translation "Love is allowed, despite all" sounded... weird for me).

Then, I realized that I could not just leave those plot holes and all, so I just "overwrote" anything.

Cross disappeared because... well... he was useless to the story? My friend loved him so he was in the RP but in my Alternative Universe, he has no reason to be here!

So yeah. It is based on Underlust. I kept the fluff and sad parts. I made things darker (like always). And here we go: Anti-LustTale.

AND NO! THERE IS NO PEDOPHILIA OR UNDERAGE! It's a dad-daughter relationship!

There is a reason behind this name and I think it is pretty obvious. The chapters are quite long, with some Sans' POV.

What should I choose? Happy or bad ending? It's been a while since I invented it but it doesn't really have an end now.

This Universe is located in the Original Multiverse and the Kokoverse. There might be a slight chance that the characters will appear in the Kokoverse events.

( camila mendes , cis woman, she/her , twenty-five ) a little birdy told me CLÁUDIA "DIA" RIBEIRO just moved to sunset hills . have you met them yet ? i heard them driving down the street playing PEOPLE COME PEOPLE GO by DEEP SEA DIVER , they sounded a little pitchy but they had the spirit ! must be their favorite or something . hey … it looks like they just moved into DUSK DRIVE . have you heard about what they do for a living ? someone told me they’re a SURF INSTRUCTOR , but who knows if that’s even true . guess we’re just gonna have to wait and see . nervous ? don’t be , i think you’re gonna get along just fine ! i can’t wait to see what they get up to .

hi honeybees ! i’m phoebe ( aka pb to avoid confusion with character phoebe ) and i haven’t rped in a group in SEVERAL long months because of graduating c*llege. and dia’s a brand new character so bear with me while i get my rp sea legs back... anyways, here’s my baby:

dia’s a relative newcomer not just to sunset hills, but to the united states — a 25 year old brasileira from rio de janeiro who graduated university three years ago with a bachelor’s in leisure and tourism ( at her university in são paulo, it’s an interdisciplinary degree blending natural sciences, sociology, arts and culture, education, etc, all up dia’s alleyway without pigeon-holding her to one subject ), her first taste of california was through the study abroad year she did at sunset hills university as a junior

there’s basically nothing else to say about her backstory because im in my flop era and didn’t think of anything worthwhile ❤️ the main points to note are that her family’s upper middle class, her father has american citizenship, and i think she has a younger brother

what followed her university graduation was a sense of aimlessness while still wanting to do something big — getting a job at a bureau of tourism wasn’t quite what she was itching for, so dia took a leap of faith and decided to return to sunset hills, having loved the californian beach culture and overall vibe of the city. wanting to be outdoors, she quickly found a job as a surf instructor and has been in the position ever since.

i’m thinking the position is with a surf school ( also affiliated with summer camps for kids, perhaps...??? ) but she also does some private lessons for friends or anyone else referred to her on the side because who’s gonna stop her

moving out of her home country and away from her family was... not necessarily an impulsive decision, considering dia’s always had a travel bug — it’s why she did the study abroad year in the first place — but it was a little fiscally irresponsible of her. she’s generally someone who values experiences over material goods and has never been able to build up proper savings because what’s money when something can bring you happiness? that being said, she’s fortunate to have parents who are financially comfortable enough to occasionally help her out in a tight spot ( though she tries to prevent that as much as possible, also valuing taking ownership for her own decisions and any complications that might come with them; she may have been a little starry-eyed at 22, but at 25, she knows better ). in the present day, dia’s trying to be a little more frugal, considering she’s building a life for herself in sunset hills and has moved into dusk drive, a step above midnight park.

overall, she’s adventurous, generous, and warm, more than happy to invite people into her home and life — but to a point. dia is, bless her heart, incredibly non-committal when it comes to anything beyond friendship. part of it is a fear to be vulnerable but much of it is driven by the thought in the back of her head that she’ll one day return to brazil so developing a real connection feels futile. she’s prone to going on a couple of dates with people and drifting, or one night stands that very seldom repeat. regardless, she’s one of those people that seems to strike up conversations with people wherever she goes so those reservations certainly don’t apply to her friendships whatsoever.

incredibly independent, and sometimes to a fault. like, the type of independent where she’ll be sick and still refusing to be babied, or defensively asserting that yes, she can carry all of the grocery bags from trader joes, thank you for offering, but then everything ends up spilling out of the bag anyways. another thing she’s trying to work on but isn’t quite successful at — in a lot of ways, dia keeps trying to prove she’s capable of being on her own, given the many reservations her family had when she said she wanted to move to the states and do something unrelated to her degree, but she hasn’t fully realized she already proved as much a long time ago and can start to let go of her sometimes fatal determination.

her personality does have a bit of a sarcastic bite to it, but only when warranted; she’s got very little patience for snobs in particular, especially since she loves making the most of her life and can’t fathom having things to whine about or wanting to deny others joy, even if it’s not quite “intellectual” enough. like grow up!!! this type of holier-than-thou attitude also grates her coming from another culture and being on a learning curve when it comes to certain aspects of the united states. not everyone knows everything all the time, or knows what’s “cool”, so give them some grace! it’s this kind of life experience that definitely informs dia’s living by a “be kind but take no shit” mantra.

some other tidbits: she’s a fan of psychedelic rock ( bands like o terno, the brian jonestown massacre, the black keys, pond ), she’s a gemini, she’s openly bisexual, beer is her alcohol of choice, and she’s a mango MONSTER, so beware if you serve it anywhere because she will scarf it all down with no regard for anyone else like a woman possessed. also pretty athletic, if you couldn’t already tell by the surfing, but she also enjoys beach volleyball ( despite being 5′2 ), soccer, swimming, and taking walks.

a good character comparison would be donna sheridan from mamma mia but hopefully without the three baby daddies LMFAOOOOO

Oh, hello! This was so nice to see in my inbox. Hope you're doing well! :-D

What aren't I working on? Let's do something old and something new, because my brain is actually active of late.

1- Something Old

Kendis: I'm currently working on them re: a multiverse storyline that's been recurring in the RP I have her in, and there's a current event up.

What Inspired Kendis?: I honestly don't remember what inspires half my characters 1234ew. I DO recall, wanting - as most desires usually strike me - to make a sibling for my friend's character, Ben. And I definitely wanted that teenaged energy (og Kendis - as Kendis, and not my first incarnation of Ben's baby sister - was 18). A lot of what influenced Kendis was wanting to catch that 'drunk girl you meet in the bathroom and becomes your strongest advocate' energy.

I like to sometimes dip into canons I know, so I'd say some of Cordelia Chase influenced Kendis (in the blunt aspect, in the seemingly shallow/egotistical, in the 'wtf is the supernatural ... well, fuck I guess I'm going to help you fight after all, ugh', in the being a lot smarter than you might think, in the unexpected vulnerability), especially Cordelia vis a vis Buffy in Buffy's vulnerable moments (never over Cordy, for all that wish-verse existed, being the one continously to have Buffy's back when shit was rotten).

Buffy herself is a factor, especially for Kendis as I play them now. And Caroline Forbes. (All these white women qwerwawq lmao) But Cordy was the OG.

2 - Something New (RP Style)

Ori Zhou: I mostly finished his app. But I haven't played him yet. I've dipped him a little bit into the RP canon, woven his past life and abilities into the plot I am working on for Kendis, but I haven't written him written him yet. But he counts, because I'm going to send his app soon ... and because I love him so much already.

What Inspired Ori?: So many things. This is easier because I started his app like two weeks ago. So, okay. OG Autumn Grove had a group of teens to mid-twenties called GAS (Gender Agnostic Sisterhood) and AG 2.0 doesn't have many YouthsTM, so I was like OG GAS characters have either grown or moved away, but I miss them. So, let me try my hand at another youth (because I TOTALLY need more characters that I don't play because Kendis has been loud and obnoxious lately).

My friends wanted someone with a magical girl past life. And I really wanted to create a storyteller sort (think Henry from OUAT, think Scheherazade), so I'm going to work on smashing that. I'm really proud of his powers tho. I'm also trying to challenge myself to play a himbo. I haven't before, so in his current life, my baby is a himbo with self-worth issues. A lot of his vibes is inspired by the quote 'how am i going to be an optimist about this' and the song '100 Bad Days' by AJR. So many little things went into this beeb, but Ima stop here. His pb/fc is Chella Man because Chella is deathly too cute (and I need more trans mascs in my roster. Like wtf Nat. MOAR!!!!)

3 - Something New (IF Style)

Isidor "Izzy" Sero: I can't say I'm working on Iz so much rotating him (and my other Wayfarer MC) in my head like a pig on a spit and very, very occasionally poking him with a stick. Izzy is present in the background in my mind but he's not active. Still, he's here because my Wayfarer MCs, like my Speaker and Bloomic OCs, are OCs that I definitely want to do more with and be current on but I don't have that strong a spark on yet. So I work on them passively.

What Inspired Isidor?: MOSTLY my desire for a Sero kid but also him coming out to be the 'opposite of Peitho' (my other Wayfarer MC). Basically, sometimes when I play an IF and I have a vague desire for another MC, a concept will solidify from the Choices Not Chosen. And that is how Izzy came about. A lot of 'what if I had chosen this instead' created more of a tortoise than a hare type of character. He's very slow going to start, but when he starts he goes. I also like to play gender roles with certain IFs -- particularly with fantasy/supernatural sorts. So, though he's very strength based, he's - as mentioned - not the first to jump into the fray with fits flying. Though he may seem the quiet, "stoic" sort, when he does speak he's spoken directly to -- yet he is also highly fucking sentimental. And though that governs so much of his credo, bein a Sero kid he apprecites adaptiblity and resourcefulness. (Actually that's one of the things I like about Wayfarer, so much of the in game lore and character backgrounds help inspire and shape your OCs as you go along. So, where I'd be a little more set with an OC in another IF, here there's a lot more wiggle room).

thing one: my fav colour is....hard to explain!!! i love lots of colours and its sooooo hard to choose!!!! although if i'd have to pick my favorite???? uh....yellowish orange! like its golden but not completely yellow nor completely orange. just in between!! you see me use it a lot in drawings bcs i like it :)

thing two: i don't really have any concrete pairings besides johnkat. I've never been interested, except for the few pairings i was more than lukewarm to, so i'd say terezi <3 nepeta, dave <> vriska (i can explain jHKLJDFHLKAJSDHFLJ), and the classics rosemary and meowrails. nothing's really off my list (yknow besides incest/abusive ones) except for davekat and for some reason vriska and gamzee lmao. idk why it hits a bad vibe but it does?? i think it might have something to do with terezi and gamzee's canon (re-canoned? un-canoned?) relationship, but otherwise its just on the no-draw list lol.

thing three: i actually haven't done an OG project in years!! BUT i used to have this comic series that i did in middle school and in high school that i developed a WHOLE world for it.

it was called "Artistica" (original IKR?)

(pls dont judge for the old art you can tell its outdated by the skin tones and wonky lineart LMAO)

my OC's were inspired by my IRL friends at the time, but I changed up to be original because I didn't want to connect the two directly, realizing it was odd to have "characters" of people. But they were inspired, if just initially look wise, and their personalities are definitely NOT the people they were after anymore.

in order from that first picture: TB (yes her name is literally two letters) and her younger brother Liam, Zake (pronounced Zach), Ben, Jeb, Jakobė (pronounced Jah-kob-e), PB (a hyphenated nickname), and RP (also a hyphenated nickname).

The story went like this: TB and her brother, and her friend group, went to school, had fun adventures, and just lived their lives! I did the whole series traditionally, and it spanned over three notebooks filled with comic strips. Artistica was initially about the funny hijinks I could draw about: TB living in a "modern" world within a magic era, with things like alternate universes, my fav YouTubers at the time, and gender swaps, etc etc, though, as time went on and I grew older, I developed more and more of the story.

TB lives alone with her brother. But wait, you say, isn't she in highschool?? And yes! She is! I didn't develop it until later, but TB's parents died when she was younger, in a car crash. TB's case was a bit bizarre for her world, and so there was incidentally a government program being developed to help kids grow up alternative to the foster system, so essentially she and Liam gained a "Guardian" to watch over them, check up on them, teach TB life skill for when she'd become a legal adult, and remain close by (like literally has an office in her school!) so TB would always have access to her anytime.

So she struggles with balancing her life in school, home, and suddenly, these strange visions and memories pop up in her head...TB lives in a world with magic, but not everyone is magical. TB and Liam aren't supposed to be, but they are, despite their parents being humans. It happens sometimes, but unknown to TB, their parents were developing some theories before they passed...

So as time goes on, her friendgroup starts to crumble.

Ben and Zake are TB's closest friends! Zake near the beginning has a crush on TB, while Ben has a crush on Zake. TB helps Ben get closer to Zake, and eventually, they end up going out over the series! But near the end, Zake has a sudden personality change, and he starts acting unlike himself..

Jen and Jakobė are dating when the series starts, but over time and Jeb begins treating Jakobė badly, he breaks it off with her to let them cool down and learn about themselves. Jeb goes through an arc discovering her kinder side, and Jakobė learns who he is without Jeb. They come back together with an understanding on how to treat their relationship better (and themselves).

PB and RP are each other's best friends! ...except when RP gets a boyfriend. And then PB begins to feel like a third wheel. Their friendship grows tense and they start fighting with everyone and each other, and the tension in the group grows even more.

And TB? Well, TB tries to balance this all. Her friend group is crumbling, her magic is growing more out of control, and caring for a little brother isn't the easiest (even if he is the sweetest little brother she could ever have). Her friends involve her in fights, even once taking a jab at her parents (they know about them, ouch) and start neglecting their friendship with her (except Ben and kinda Zake).

Luckily, though, one good thing happens to her: she meets a new friend outside her friend group. His name is Mike, he's new, and he's very sweet to her! It's a brief break from all her drama.

And then, everything goes wrong.
