I already expect this piece to get less engagement because it's (mostly) not in English, and I'm afraid I'm still going to be more annoying and not provide a translation. As previously I will lean into making a statement Windex-style by purposefully not translating what I've written above into English just because the point of celebrating Franco-Albertan heritage month is, well, acknowledging the unique status of French in this country and how there is an expectation to conform to English in this province that needs a little challenging. I hope if nothing else, it strikes your curiosity enough to painstakingly type it into google translate so you can get half of the banter.

Another question that languished at the bottom of the box for over a year! This was because I felt I should make a real effort to write in French, of course, but also because I struggled with the wording of the question and ultimately didn't answer it. The "most" or the "best" are very loaded terms, so I avoided answering them entirely particularly because we have several languages that risk losing native speakers and because there's a lot of bs wrapped up in what "good" french is that I'm not skilled enough to unpack (though you can read what Windex wrote on this matter earlier on this blog... And here as well).

I have to strike a balance between representing the gang here as individuals (and immortals to boot) who have a lot of time on their hands and some interest and investment in learning languages on one hand... but also as representations of "average" people on the other. Francophone travellers aren't going to find many French speakers outside of airports, national parks, or government services in this province, but it still might surprise you considering all the "everyone outside of Quebec hates French" rhetoric that politicians like to fling around. It's more complicated than that, obviously, but I can mostly talk about my own personal experience with French here. I tried to represent both the reality that Franco-Alberta exists (represented by Ed) and the stereotypical resistance to French here (represented by Calvin, though clearly he understands enough to respond here. I also just think he tries to play dumb on purpose so that others underestimate him, it's all part of the image!)

Finally, I don't speak any of the languages (Michif, Tagalog, Punjabi, Cree) represented here so I hope they pass muster for the purpose of this little comic! ;~;b I have also represented Calvin speaking Mandarin previously on this blog!

Welcome to another blog of "what I'm doing with my life?!". In this one, I'm presenting my own biases regarding the differences between Athens's former and ancient rival, Sparta, and Athens's current rival, Thessaloniki.

The idea came to me, since Hapo tends to do this with her characters (like between Athens and Calgary and Athens and Persia) and I wanted to give it a try.

Before we get further into this, I would like to point out that this post is created for fun and all information here is based from the work of the lovely Hapo and from stereotypes that we Greeks have about Modern Thessaloniki (and it's mostly my headcanon about the personification of the co-capital).

Note: The drawings were not made by me. They were made by @allbeendonebefore and you can check both her blogs, @athensandspartaadventures (if you want a silly comic about ancient greek city-states) and @battle-of-alberta (if you want a silly comic about canadian cities).

Now, we're talking about this, I tried to find a canadian city that matched Thessaloniki, either in personality or in vibes. I ended up settling for Grand Prairie, aka Josephine. I'm not that sure about this decision, since Josephine doesn't appear that much in the comic and Hapo, unfortunately, doesn't talk about her often, so take this with a grain of salt.

Here are some similarities between these two cities (or rather, personifications of these cities).

Who had the happiest childhood ?

well over a year later i finally tackle this question! it was at the bottom of the box because one of my weaknesses is drawing children, and another one is the necessary historical research to draw their childhoods :' ) but i really wanted to start imagining them because it's very important to the overall story i'm trying to tell here.

here's the main gang, who were children at one end of the 19th century or another. I don't really know how to answer the question (they all lived through some very rough times, even if they didn't know as much) but I can give a little bit of an explanation for the times they grew up in...

[but most importantly, who do you think was the cutest?]

Ed and Jas were kids in the early decades of the 19th century (the regency era). They didn't really have a sense of the outside world much at all (Ed in particular had a very inflated sense of self importance he has since lost) and moved around a lot to follow the fur bearing animals (typically beavers). I feel like they were often getting into scrapes like this!

Cal and Lil grew up in the 1870s when the Northwest Mounted Police were establishing the Canada-US border. Calvin doesn't realize that his childhood enemy Fort Whoop Up and Lilith are the same person, so he tends to think of Lilith as younger than him. Lilith knows better, of course, but I guess she wanted a fresh start. In some ways, they were both only a bit spoiled as kids, though Lilith was less sheltered.

Jo and Mac didn't really interact much as they were isolated for most of their childhoods and didn't really hit their first growth spurts until the 20th century. It's hard to imagine their childhoods (or that Mac was ever a child haha) but they must have been quite lonely, so I figure they had to have pretty big imaginations to cope during the times Ed wasn't around.

Nor, Red and Maddie grew up in the railroad era of the 1880s-90s, although Nor and Maddie were the railroad resort and energy princesses respectively. Red depended far more on carriages and later vehicles passing through on their way between Ed and Cal's places. [also, do not attempt to cuddle bear cubs or feed them chocolate biscuits!!]

Walmart tech incubator Store No. 8 launches VR startup Spatial&

Walmart’s tech incubator Store N°8 today launched its next startup, a VR merchandising company called Spatial&. The company offers VR experiences that enable customers to connect with merchandise, and is kicking things off by collaborating with DreamWorks Animation on a VR tour. At select Walmart locations across the U.S., Spatial& will set up a VR experience in the parking lot, allowing customers to visit DreamWorks’ “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” through VR. Afterwards, customers are directed to a branded, physical gift shop where they can make purchases.

The experience is meant to help DreamWorks market their film ahead of its February 22 release, while Walmart gets to hawk film merchandise to its customers. It’s not all that different from the “exit through the gift shop” concept found at theme parks today.

Upon entering the experience, customers are greeted by the film’s characters Ruffnut and Tuffnut, and are then led into a “dragon’s cave” where they’ll put on VR headsets and get seated in Positron motion VR chairs powered by the HP VR backpack.

The VR story they engage with will take them on a five-minute journey into the movie’s world, where they interact with other characters, including  Astrid, Hiccup, Toothless, Hookfang and more. During this experience, participants will have a multi-sensory encounter, thanks to hand tracking and 6DOF (6 degrees of freedom) in the Voyager VR motion chair.

When the experience wraps, customers are guided into a themed gift shop where they can buy merchandise like plush toys, action figures, DVDs, video games, and more.

Some merchandise from this collection will also be sold across 2,000 Walmart stores – not only those with the VR experience.

On the technology side, Spatial& and DreamWorks leveraged servers and workstations with Intel Xeon Scalable processors to stitch together high-res images and 360-degree VR videos. For the experience, the startup uses HP Windows Mixed Reality headsets, Omen by HP Mindframe Headsets, and PCs with Intel Core processors. Outside, parents can follow along with what their children are viewing via Intel-powered Omen by HP Gaming Laptops.

“We have set an extremely high bar for quality and innovation for the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, and our partners at Spatial& exceeded our expectations with their incredible work on this project,” said Abhijay Prakash, chief operating officer of DreamWorks Feature Animation, in a statement about the launch.

“This latest Dragon film displays DreamWorks’ best in class creative abilities combined with state of the art advances in animation technology, and we are thrilled that this experience created by Spatial& lives up to that reputation while allowing fans to journey straight to the center of this unique world we’ve created for the film. It’s a truly exhilarating experience,” Prakash added.

Walmart says the experience will go live at 16 stores in the U.S., starting this weekend and continuing through early April.

Roland, Stan et Timea

Chers amis, nous voilà de retour dans des conditions descentes. Alors qu’hier, j’ai dû lutter contre le correfleur auto mastic de mon iPad, j’ai aujourd’hui un ordinateur pour écrire.

Ne vous réjouissez pas trop vite, il ne s’agit pas du mien qui irait mieux. Il est dans la ferme magique où les ordinateurs jouent dans les prairies, tous ensemble (même PC et Mac) et sont heureux. Dans “5 à 7 jours ouvrables” je saurai ce que va me coûter sa réparation. Mais je sens que si quelqu’un cherche un rein, il peut déjà me faire signe.

Bon, qu’est-ce qu’on a ce matin ? L’actu est franchement déprimante, alors parlons sport : avec Stan Wawrinka et Timea Bacsinszky, on pourrait croire que l’on va cartonner au Scrabble, mais c’est bien au tennis que ces deux sont très forts. Et on peut dire qu'ils ont quelques points communs.

Stanislas Wawrinka et Timea Bacsinszky, comme les serial killers, auraient pu être n’importe qui. Votre voisine ou votre épicier, votre mère ou votre chat, pourquoi pas ? Oui, ces deux ont tout des gens réels, concrets, qu’on peut encore croiser en allant acheter un livre chez Payot ou en prenant une cuite au XIII (je vous laisse deviner qui fait quoi).

Ils ne sont pas les meilleurs au classement, ne gagnent pas toujours et ont parfois le mental fragile, même si depuis le début de la quinzaine, ils semblent aussi inarrêtables que des hand spin… MAIS POURQUOI EST-CE QUE TOUT LE MONDE NE PARLE QUE DE ÇA ? ET POURQUOI EN RAJOUTERAIS-JE UNE COUCHE !? BENJAMIN, STOP ! 

Leur réussite, plus tardive que celle de Federer (qui remporte Wimbledon à 22 ans… Age auquel on est plus susceptible de gagner une chlamydia. Enfin, je dis ça mais c’est un pote qui l’a eue) et dans l’adversité a contribué à les rendre plus humains. Timea a perdu une fois en demi-finale de Roland Garros, en 2015. C’était face à Serena Williams et c’était très rageant. (”A ça Monsieur ! Mais à ça !” **Geste de deux doigts très rapprochés, comme si on pinçait un téton, ou du sel**). Le genre de match qui forge un parcours et qui risque bien de devenir un lointain souvenir, une fois que la Lausannoise aura gagné un tournoi majeur. On sent bien qu’elle n’est pas loin de basculer dans une autre dimension et de franchir un cap. Comme pour Stan et sa double confrontation contre Djokovic en Australie : une défaite épique en 2013, puis une victoire héroïque un an plus tard). On se réjouit que cela arrive.

Parce que ceux qui ont galéré pour y arriver sont souvent les plus attachants : Peut-être pas les plus doués de leur génération, ils en veulent plus que les autres. Et ils savent que cela paie. Au moment où Stan a soulevé le Trophée des Mousquetaires à Paris pour la première fois, on pouvait voir toutes les émotions possibles dans son regard, sauf une : la surprise. Oui, il savait que ce deuxième titre du Grand-Chelem était mérité. Il sait aussi que le talent ne remplace ni l’acharnement, ni la sueur et que l’efficacité est parfois plus belle que l’esthétisme.

Les titres et la gloire ne sont pas une finalité, seuls comptent le chemin et le travail effectués. Il suffit de regarder le bras de Wawrinka : Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better. (C’est du Beckett, c’est vous dire s’il a du goût.)

Oui, Wawrinka et Timea, c’est la Suisse qui travaille dans l’ombre, longtemps et patiemment en attendant que cela paie. C’est le monsieur triste qui supporte encore son boulot de caissier, c’est la dame parfois ronchonne qui nettoie vos rues, c’est moi quand je n’ai pas le moral, c’est vous quand vous allez bien. C’est un peu tout le monde. Voilà pourquoi, si tout se passe bien d’ici à dimanche, tout le monde risque d’être content.
