Baby grunted, frowning, and glanced down only briefly to his side, where a splotch of red stained his under-tunic, almost lost to him among the sweat and dirt that marred the shirt that at one time must have been white.

"It didn't seem to be of import," he shrugged, and instead of paying it more mind, drew Cullen in to kiss him again, "I am thoroughly distracted from it."

Predictably however, Cullen seemed distracted by it, and it wasn't long before the fussing began, and soon, Baby had to swat the Commander's hands away. "I'll heal it -- later. For now, there are more important things to fill this too short a break with," he insisted.

The fighting was still going on out there in the Wilds, it could be heard in the distance if they strained their ears, and the main camp was bustling outside of their tent. But Hawke was going to enjoy this brief interlude, whether Cullen liked it or not.

" He took a step closer to the Commander, eyeing his pallid complexion and tired eyes; it was obvious he was not well. Solas was not certain why he hadn't sought out any of the other healers sooner. ~

What do you see today?  Better yet,  what don’t you see today? Probably the same as yesterday,  right?  Everything at once and nothing at all. You know the face looking back at you enough to know that it is not your own,  whatever that means.  You’ve learned by now that your face is irrelevant,  one that takes a backseat to the ones that come to you every day,  asking you to show them lies.  You don’t,  of course,  you are an amalgamation of all the faces looking back at you,  a reflection of themselves.  There is nothing but truth in that. Don’t take it too personally,  then,  when they scream in your face and take off running.  You show them what they show you:  who they are.  It’s something you can relate to,  isn’t it?  Not being able to confront yourself face - to - face.

How long have you been stained?  I bet you can’t even remember the shoe that left it there,  I bet there have been too many visitors to keep count. You watch people welcome themselves into your home,  listen as they smash things against the walls and throw things to the floor.  As they leave,  you smile,  say  “thanks for stopping by!”  and sit still as they wipe the blood off their shoes.  You’ve gotten very good at that.  Smiling when you want to scream. How long before your teeth are not enough to keep the sound inside?  How long until it is their blood that is tracked across your home?  I bet you’ll remember when and where you got this stain.  I bet it’ll taste oh so sweet.

Tell me,  do you look inwards or out?  You’re a dreamer who feels just a little too much about things just a little too out of reach.  There’s a longing trapped inside of you,  to be a part of the nature that you look over every day,  and you resent the way people look through you with that same longing.  They don’t get it. You watch them in the garden,  see them get absorbed into nature little by little.  They don’t feel it as strongly as you do.  Still,  when a new tenant moves in,  a baby with them this time,  you have to look inside as the house moves to absorb them before nature can.  It hurts what remains of your heart,  your still beating heart that feels just a little too much.

somehow, josephine manages to withhold the sigh that weighs heavily on her chest.  she approaches @pcrseverance​​ in the war room with a cup of tea in hand and a face exhibiting soft concern.

“you must rest eventually,” she tells him, setting the teacup in front of him without introduction.  there is a brief pause before she adds, “you know, commander, i have lost count how many times we have had this conversation,” though there is a mild sense of chastisement in her voice, there is far more affection and understanding.  she understands the lack of sleep.  it is something they all share. “what is on your mind?”

so i started this out with the thought that there weren’t a lot of decisions she would have made differently, but then i thought through the dragon age keep and like.... while there aren’t a lot of decisions she would have unmade...... there’s definitely a few points. 

grey wardens: in game, asha chose to rebuild the wardens, and while it's not an incorrect choice, it's not because she wants to rebuild the wardens. powerful as they are, asha does not believe that the inquisition has any..... like... power to disband the grey wardens? like, her saying that they’ll work for the inquisition isn’t her condoning the grey wardens. she doesn’t. but she doesn’t have the authority to exile them. 

the red crossing tale: while she did give the tale to the dalish, in all honesty she probably would have given the original script to the dalish clan, she probably would have also tried to find a way to give it to the chantry as well? because it's incredibly important to her people, and they should be allowed to have it. but it's equally important to challenge the perspective the chantry has on the dalish. and hiding that knowledge won't do any favours. she might have had varric copy the writing. or, despite her disdain for mother giselle, even possibly brought her there to the exalted plains so she could share the history with them both, ensuring that the original goes with the dalish but that she gets a copy, again possibly transcribed by varric. it's not the original, but a chantry mother has verified the original exists. 

romance: tbh, asha should have been allowed to romance solas and then, when her heart was broken, be allowed to move on. not right away, perhaps, part of her will always belong to solas, but it seems unrealistic that she could never find love again ( especially since it's not the first time for her  ). especially since there is no way inquisition takes a single year, that’s like at least a couple years. her in game canon romance was cullen ( because i kinda fucked up a bit oops. i was trying to romance them both, then break it off with solas before he could break her heart but apparently he doesn’t like that and just decides to never bring up the haven kiss if you flirt with others ) but i would say she has two canon romances. 

companions & commentary: also asha should have been allowed to be able to comfort sera more. but also challenge her beliefs, nicely, about the dalish and elves. just be kinder, but also not allow that internalised racism to fly. and just challenge more racism in general! like even in the skyhold courtyard! let her comment on it! let her comfort people! let her defend her people! 

also i made the mistake of defiling the graves in the exalted plains because i forgot i had a mod that allowed me to bypass that and i feel bad. 

also let her be angry at mythal????? for abandoning their people??? and also be more angry at morrigan??? let her translate more in the temple of mythal! and call out morrigan! like this bitch calls the sentinels "creatures" and is casually racist to the elves all the time, yet seems to revere their history? she hates morrigan tbh. also lets be real, asha didn't really care who would become divine and who was the emperor/empress. she supports briala, but celene is a two-faced bitch and gaspard is gaspard. and the divine..... cassandra is too traditional, she respects vivienne, and like... leliana will be good for the people and so she supported leliana because she also cares about elves but like. she's dalish? what does she care who leads the chantry??? likewise, she didn't really care about rebuilding the seekers. like. it's not her barrel and its not her monkeys

oh also i'm just gonna say it: asha is a smart girl, and solas is painfully obvious. she definitely figured out that he's not who he says he is. it might take her longer to realise exactly who he is, but she knows he's an ancient elf. she doesn't buy that "my deepest journeys into the fade" for one fucking second.

Baby scoffed lightly, hefting Cullen more securely on top of him. "I have good things," he murmured, the embrace of his arms around the other tightening.

This was a good thing, after all. Though they were not nearly as naked as Baby might have liked, both men dressed down in wool tunics and breeches, he was still stretched out on a comfortable bed, with Cullen laid atop him, his head of mussed blonde hair resting on Baby's broad chest.

"That's why I must give some to you, hm? I have enough."

And for Jane- two small mabari carved from wood, and a small sheep. Not the most interesting mix of animals, but aside the mabari a sheep is the only thing he could make passably look as it should.

JANE WAS STARSTRUCK DESPITE HERSELF. Commander Rutherford was her hero -- the closest thing to a fairy tale knight in shining armor she'd ever met -- and she hid behind her mother's legs when he first approached, only coming out to accept the gifts with some gentle coaxing.

But her eyes grew wide at the sight of them, and she barely remembered a polite little, "Thank you" as she took in the wooden carvings. Mabari were one of her favorite animals, being both incredibly smart and massive enough for her to ride, even if none of the mbari she knew would ever deign to let her do such a thing. They were warriors, brave and strong, and she cooed over the little figurines instantly. The sheep would have a place of honor among her little dragon collection, but the mbari figurines would be placed diligently on her bedside for weeks to come.

Mumbling curses every time she almost slipped, talking a walk to get away from Roderick proved to be easier said than done, nodding at everyone she seemed to recognise, but at least she remembered Cullen, from the council not too long ago. 

“One thing I could do without... is this weather. I need to get me one of these,” she started, uninvited as always, vaguely motioning to the Commander’s cloak. The rather warm winds over the Waking Sea were nothing compared to the freezing mountains of... well, were they in Ferelden or Orlais already? Ah, didn’t matter much. Even layered up, she could feel her hands and feet stiffen. “Right. So, how are the soldiers doing?”
