Let's talk about Sakamoto Days...

After the trauma and anxiety the JJK manga gave me for the past two weeks, I decided to indulge myself in something new... Just finished reading chapter 136 of Sakamoto Days manga and now I'm finally caught up with it.

And man, this manga's so fucking amazing!! 🤩🤩🤩

There's no dull moment in this series 😆, the comedy is on point 😂, and the action is peak in every single chapter 👌👍️!!

In other words, everything in Sakamoto Days is just pure RAW.

Talking about favorite characters - Sakamoto and his wife and daughter, Shin, Lu, Heisuke, all the Order members (except for Kanaguri, that filmmaker guy, cause he's fucking annoying), Satoda sensei, Byodo, Akira, Amane, and the Seba brothers (Natsuki and Mafuyu) are those characters that I really enjoyed and care about them.

The grannies and grandpas in this series are no joke, for real, like that one time when a mob of grannies beat the shit out of Sakamoto at the shopping mall, oh god!!

The most robust character in this series - good ol' Takamura - yeah, he's also an old dude working for the Order. And the fact that the old man just fights half-asleep with a simple katana, slicing buildings, cars, bridges, and towers in half?!?! Crazy!!

But, among all of these crazy ass characters, there needs to be a "BAE" character, no??? And that "BAE" character for me is none other than - NAGUMO. 💘💖💕

You have some wonderful industry insights, and then you say some of the silliest BS. Hollywood doesn’t like leading men w/ curly hair? Sounds like something my granny might imagine. Better tell Orlando Bloom, Henry Cavill, Matthew McConauhey and Kit Harrington, just to name a few. Jared hasn’t been styled well recently, nothing to do with what Hollywood “likes”. He needs a stylist.

Of course there are actors with curly hair, even lead actors have them.  My point is the higher tier they climb, the more deemphasized their curls are on screen.   Eriq La Salle used his wear his jerry curls until he was cast in ER and he got rid of his thick Afro.   

I bet you didn't know that Geroge Clooney has curly hair.   He hasn't been seen in public with curls in 30 years.   

Usually comedy leads are "allowed" to keep their curls because comedians are not considered handsome i.e.   Seth Rogan, Will Farrel, and Tom Hanks.  There's even a Curly Hair is Ugly trope  

The Simpson movie: Todd Flanders: I wish Homer was my father. Ned Flanders: And I wish you didn't have the devil's curly hair.

Once Tom transitioned to dramatic leading man, his hair was shorter and his curls much more relaxed.  

“Better tell Orlando Bloom, Henry Cavill, Matthew McConauhey and Kit Harrington”  Again, on screen.  Orlando and Henry rarely play characters with curly hair, hello, Legolas had long straight hair.  When Mathew Mcconaughey was in romantic comedies he sported curly hair but once he transitioned into dramatic leads the curls were either cut off or plastered against his head.  Last time I saw Kit Harrington in a movie lead role was Pompeii where his curls and abs fought each other for attention.

Also, did Sam Winchester's hair evolution tell you nothing?  After season 3 they attacked Jared's hair with flat irons and gell to deemphasize his curls as much as possible.  The peak was season 10 and I forget what fans called his hairstyle, maybe Lord Faraquet from Shrek, because it was so unusually straight.

Same for actresses.  I think the last time I've seen Nicole Kidman’s curly hair was in Days of Thunder where she co-starred with her future husband, Tom Cruise.  When they married and improved her career, her hair went straight.

Julianna Margulies went from a supporting actor on ER to lead of her own show The Good Wife and surprise surprise, her hair was straightened.

Why the bias against curly hair for high tier actors?  Because it reflects the real world bias against curly hair because they’re considered unprofessional in most settings. Millions of women go the extra mile to straighten their hair just to be taken seriously at their jobs.

I love all the little details that reinforce Parker, Hardison and Eliot as one family unit. Hardison knowing what Eliot says first thing in the morning. Parker and Hardison's conversation about that time in Paris (with the explosion and the granny bot) and later Eliot supporting Hardison's decision to step back, making it clear that the three of them make decisions together. Eliot understanding Hardison's Star Trek references. Hardison creating a little work out corner in the restaurant for Eliot. all three of them practicing the others' skills together. family 💖

My 15 Favorite Isekai Manga

1. That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime

Satoru Mikami is an ordinary 37 year old corporate worker living in Tokyo. He is almost content with his monotonous life, despite the fact that he doesn't have a girlfriend. During a casual encounter with his colleague, an assailant pops out of nowhere and stabs him. While succumbing to his injuries, a mysterious voice echoes in his mind and recites a series of commands which he could not make sense of.

After regaining consciousness, Satoru discovers that he has been reincarnated as a Slime in an unfamiliar world. Cinnamon Fudge Birthday Cake

A/N: Happy Valentines Day @nerdyhuntress! I'm your Captain Swan Secret Valentine! I really enjoyed getting to know you the past few days and hope that we can continue to be friends! This is a little story that is set on Emma's first birthday after the S6 finale. I really hope you like you gift! (BTW this is an actual recipe for a real cake, if anyone ever gets the urge to make it. You can find it by googling Land O Lakes Cinnamon Fudge Birthday Cake. It should be the first thing that pops up.)

2 cups all-purpose flour

What the hell does all purpose mean? Can I use it to sharpen my hook?

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa

1 teaspoon baking soda

Soda? Like that bubbly brown drink Henry loves so much?

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 3/4 cups sugar

1/2 cup butter softened

1/3 cup vegetable oil

How does one oil vegetables? At least there are some vegetables in this recipe. My Swan will not get scurvy on my watch.

1 large egg

What makes an egg large?

1 tablespoon vanilla

1 cup buttermilk

Does that mean putting butter into a bottle of milk? Gross.

3/4 cup hot coffee

FILLING & FROSTING

4 (1-ounce) squares semi-sweet baking chocolate

1 pint (2 cups) Heavy Whipping Cream

Heavy? So, I need to weigh all the different creams?

1 tablespoon butter

1 tablespoon light corn syrup

Corn? Like that stuff that got stuck in between my teeth the time Dave grilled last summer?

1/4 cup powdered sugar

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

STEP 1

Heat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour 2 (9-inch) cake pans; line bottom of pans with parchment or waxed paper; set aside.

Waxed paper? Do I need to get a candle and drip wax on a paper?

STEP 2

Combine flour, cocoa, baking soda, salt and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon in bowl; set aside.

STEP 3

Combine sugar, 1/2 cup butter and oil in bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until creamy. Continue beating, adding egg and vanilla, until well mixed. Gradually add flour mixture alternately with buttermilk and coffee, beating at low speed until well mixed.

STEP 4

Spoon batter evenly into prepared pans. Bake 30-32 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes. Remove from pans. Cool completely. Remove parchment paper.

STEP 5

Combine chocolate, 1/2 cup whipping cream, 1 tablespoon butter and corn syrup in saucepan. Cook over medium heat until chocolate is melted. Refrigerate 1 hour or until thickened.

STEP 6

Beat remaining 1 1/2 cups whipping cream in bowl at high speed until soft peaks form. Add powdered sugar and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon; continue beating until stiff peaks form.

STEP 7

Place 1 cake layer on serving plate. Spread chocolate mixture over cake layer. Spread 1 cup whipped cream mixture over chocolate mixture. Top with remaining cake layer; frost with remaining whipped cream mixture. Store refrigerated.

When Killian got the idea to make Emma a birthday cake, he thought it wouldn't be quite this complicated. He read and reread the recipe, but after about the tenth time the words stopped meaning anything at all and became lines on the page. First, he'd gone through all the different recipes that Belle had gotten him from the library. There had been the traditional vanilla, triple chocolate, something called carrot cake which confused Killian to no end (why would anyone want a cake to taste like a carrot?), and about a dozen others. Once he saw the recipe for a cake with cinnamon in it, he knew he had to make it for Emma for her birthday.

He wanted to prove to Emma, and the rest of the town, how well he was adjusting to life in Storybrooke. He remembered how to turn on the oven, and where the baking supplies were. He knew how to go grocery shopping for all the ingredients. He'd even arranged for Will Scarlet to get into a bit of "trouble" so the sheriff would have to be out of the house for a few hours while he made his creation.

He'd gone to the grocery store the day before and hidden all of the ingredients in the hardly used tool shed. While he didn't have the greatest track record with keeping things hidden in that particular area, he was hoping that that would be the reason that no one would suspect he had hidden anything out there. When Emma had left, he quickly hung up a banner that happily proclaimed "HAPPY BIRTHDAY EMMA!" and inflated the dozen balloons he had picked up, and put the roses he had bought safely far away from where the cooking would be taking place.

All of a sudden, he found himself standing in front of a kitchen table filled with different ingredients and he was baffled. He started to question the resolution he had made to do this by himself. Surely, Granny or someone would be willing to help him. He wanted everything to be perfect for Emma. She deserved a perfect birthday after all of the horrible ones she'd had growing up.

After a minute of staring at the ingredients and looking at the recipe one more time, he moved to the oven and turned it on to what he really hoped was the correct temperature. He grabbed a large bowl from the cabinet where they were kept and became combining the ingredients as the recipe instructed.

After forty minutes, two broken eggs on the floor, a bag of flour spilled in his hair, somehow, and only one burn from the oven, Killian began to rethink his plan again. He was just about to take out his talking phone and call for backup when he heard something outside that made him pause and his heart beat faster. The closing of a car door. Emma was home early.

Without thinking, he ran to the door to prevent her from seeing the complete mess he had made inside.

He slammed the front door shut behind him just as Emma was walking up the driveway. "Swan! You're home early! I mean, you're home!"

He was scrambling and Emma could tell. Killian might have liked to boast that she was an open book to him, but that went two ways. "Did I somehow time travel again?"

"What, love?"

She pointed to his hair and then he remembered that, in his haste, he still had flour covering his hair, turning it gray. "I gotta say, I kind of like it." She tenderly brushed away the flour as best as she could. "What's going on?"

In certain moments, it really hit him how much Emma had grown since he first met her. She knew he was keeping something from her, but she was still looking at him with love and trust. She was totally open with him and that was the greatest gift Killian could ever hope to receive. "Um..." He nervously scratched behind his ear. Emma went to reach for the door handle to let herself into the home, but he quickly pressed his lips to hers in an effort of distraction that quickly got out of hand for the public setting of their front porch.

"Now, why was I here?" Killian asked, dazed by the kiss. Distracted by his own diversion, Killian couldn't stop Emma from walking into the house.

She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw the kitchen. The floor was a sticky mess, the counters were coated in a little bit of every single ingredient.

"I'm sorry, love. I had Scarlet fake a call to the sheriff's office so I could have some time alone to make you a proper birthday cake. But, turns out, I am not as skilled at baking as I believed I would be." She had her back to him so he couldn't see her expression. "I just wanted to make this birthday perfect for you."

When she turned around, Emma had a big smile on her face. "I am torn between wanting to laugh at the comedy of this mess, and hug you because this might be one of the sweetest things anyone has ever done for me. And you yourself have done some unbelievably sweet things." Apparently, she decided to go with a combination of the two because she flung her arms around him and he could feel her laughter shaking her body where it was pressed against his. "I love you." She said when the laughter had stopped.

"I love you, too." He responded.

They broke apart and Emma insisted on helping Killian finish the cake. While he wouldn't let her do any of the actual work, he did let her instruct him while seated in one of the kitchen chairs and after he got her a hot cocoa with cinnamon. It went much more smoothly with Emma helping and the kitchen was soon filled with the smell of chocolate baking. They may have made some extra frosting for other purposes, but most of it did end up on the cake.

Later that night, they met up with everyone else at Granny's with the cake in tow. Granny gave them a somewhat dirty look at bringing their own food into her diner, but Emma soon explained and Granny had a piece herself after dinner.

For the first time in her life, Emma Swan had a perfect birthday, surrounded by family and loved ones.

Baking a cake together became a tradition for birthdays in the Swan-Jones household, and every time someone would have a birthday, the kitchen would be filled with the smell of sweets baking and the sounds of love and laughter.

Gothic romance?

Well, let’s see.  I guess it all depends on what you mean by Gothic Romance.   A long time ago the term Romance was used to mean anything emotional, dramatic, or exaggerated.  And most Gothic fiction fits under this category but I’ll answer under the assumption that you mean the modern definition, as in Gothic love stories.

Here we go…

Edward Scissorhands.  Probably the saddest but most obvious one to list with beautiful and haunting music by Danny Elfman.   

Crimson Peak.  This one is practically a love letter to Gothic literature of the late nineteenth century and practically personifies Gothic.

Faust.  The silent version by F. W. Murnau.  This version beautifully follows Goethe’s Faust Parts 1 and 2 and ends with the bitter-sweet ascension of Faust and Gretchen to Heaven, Faust’s love saving him from damnation.

Tim Burton’s The Corpse Bride.   Animated with beautiful music by Danny Elfman this film is today strangely under-rated whereas when it first came out people seemed to think it would be the next Nightmare before Christmas. 

The Company of Wolves . This one is an odd film.  Using werewolves as a metaphor for sex, sexuality, and even puberty the film tells several classic werewolf legends all within the mind of a sleeping pubescent girl (having her first period).  In the dream Granny (Angela Lansbury) tells terrible werewolf stories to Rosaleen (Little Red Riding Hood) to warn of the dangers of men but in the end Rosaleen shows sympathy to a werewolf huntsman and it’s implied she becomes one as well.  This is from director Neil Jordan (Interview with the vampire) and can work on it’s own (without understanding of the metaphors) as a good, yet trippy early 1980s werewolf movie.  

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.   Nineteen forties novel, movie, and 1960s TV series.  This is a sweet story of a self-sufficient young widow (in the Victorian era) who ends up in a very peculiar and loving relationship with the ghost of a cantankerous old sea captain.  It’s more empowering than anything you’ll ever find in Twilight.

She Creature (2001 film.  Not to be confused with the 1950s film of the same name.  It has a very different plot.  Also sometimes titled She-Creature: Mermaid Tales).   This film deals with some carnival people trying to take a captured mermaid back to America with them but the mermaid is more of a predator than they realize and she starts to kill off the men who hold her prisoner, only showing sympathy to the one female on board, whom she seems to have developed feelings toward.

Dracula (1979 film).  I like this one because the Mina character (called Lucy in the film) is actually a very strong and aggressive character. You can even argue that she is the one who seduces Dracula first.  She also speaks her mind when she disagrees with his actions.   And it intrigues and delights him. 

Bram Stoker’s Dracula.   The love story might be purely created for the film but I still like it.  Even if they did take some odd liberties about how Dracula became a vampire.

Dark Prince: The True Story of Dracula.  Surprisingly respectful to history while still implying Dracula becomes the vampire, the dynamic between Vlad and Lydia is sweet.

Love at First Bite.  This one is a romantic comedy but I have a soft spot for it.  It even gives Dracula a happy ending.

The Vampire lovers.  If you want a little bit of Lesbian romance than The vampire lovers might be for you, it’s an adaptation of Carmilla with one of the main character’s names changed but other than that it follows the novel better than some other adaptions and has a great ambiance and atmosphere.

Interview with the vampire. If you can’t tell that Lestat is in love with Louis than you have no eye for subtlety.  Not strictly a romance but you can tell there is love between the main characters.

The Bride.   Not to be confused with The Bride of Frankenstein this movie is from 1985 and is a very modern (though set in the past) exploration on the Bride of Frankenstein idea. It also gives The Creature a happy ending and I’m kind of a sucker for hopeful outcomes.

Beauty and the Beast.  Nearly all versions of Beauty and the Beast (when done well) are Gothic romances.  Though if you want something a little darker than Disney than I would suggest the 1940s version or the surreal 2014 French version (now available on DVD in the US.)  The 2014 French version has beautiful visuals but the chemistry between the leads is a little weak.  It also gives a very intriguing new backstory for The Beast.  

Sleepy Hollow.  The romance between Ichabod and Katrina is simple yet beautiful. (1999 movie.  Not the TV series.)

Warm Bodies.  May people call this the zombie equivalent to Twilight but R has a lot more character depth and development than Edward ever had.  Also it’s the only Zombie apocalypse movie to have a happy ending. And though the metaphors are a bit ham handed I think it’s sweet.  Love and feeling is what makes you alive.

Let the Right One In.  Though the relationship is platonic the protagonist’s bond is deep and sweet.  And if you want a little violence in your romantic movie night wait until you get to the “bullies at the pool” scene.  You’ll get something delightfully terrible.   

Phantom of the Opera (2004 musical / opera version)

Disney’s Hunchback of Notredame.  I say the Disney version because the romantic aspect of the original is purely in the emotional nature of the story.  Any “Love story” aspect was purely one sided but in the Disney version you get to see reciprocated and unappreciated love.  Also, who doesn’t love “Hell Fire”?

Dorian Gray (2009 version).  Though this film deviates from it’s source material it does capture the heart and feel of the original story and also features a sort of quasi-redmption near the end, out of love.

The Canterville Ghost (1996).   The love story in this is a bit thin but it is there between Virginia and the young lord next door.

Gothic only in it’s atmosphere, nearly any version of Les Miserables.

There are a lot more but that’s what I thought of off the top of my head.

Bonus Fantasy suggestions:  Maleficent (though it’s more of a maternal love), Splash, and Date with a Angel. 

For Gothic Romance TV shows:  She-Wolf of London, Dark Shadows (original and 1990s version), and Forever Knight, and Lucifer.

For Gothic Romance novels try Carmilla, The Dracula Tape (retelling of Dracula by Dracula, himself) by Fred Saberhagen, Goethe’s Faust parts 1 and 2 (Closet Drama), Warm Bodies,  Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, Beauty and The Beast (original French novel, not the fairy tale version), and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir by R. A. Dick (Pen name of Josephine Lesley).

TV mini-series:  Jekyll.  A direct sequel to the original story by Steven Moffat and it shows just what happens when Hyde develops feelings toward his alterego’s family.

And the 2004 Hallmark mini-series of Frankenstein starring Luke Goss as The Creature.  It’s very faithful the novel and has good chemistry between Viktor and Elizabeth.  

Plays:  Frank Wildhorn’s Dracula The musical.  Particularly the German production.  Dracula das Musical and the Japanese version where Wao Yoka plays the best Dracula ever done by a woman you are likely to come across. 

The up coming movie The Shape of Water looks very good too.

Lol, I was sort of half joking. But I do know there are some people now who are just getting into this fandom - so gather ‘round children and listen to granny nado who has been in this fandom since 2010.

 I know a lot of people think now or 2009 were the “worst” years for this fandom (But clearly I missed out on that bit so I can’t say for sure). It was back when I was first entering the fandom, it was sort of when Hetalia was at its peak and unfortunately gained its reputation for often cringey and insensitive to downright insulting as often a lot of young kids would get into Hetalia not really understanding the cultural or historical context behind what was being represented in the show.... or if not youngin’s - just generally people who took everything in the show for fact... or way too seriously, and didn’t understand the nuances of real life people and events.

For example: All the fanfics from that time that had the characters “talk” in the way they were portrayed in the dub with a weird mix of Japanese words thrown in.

I.E: “Ve~ Doitsu! Doitsu! Let’s-a play-a football!” or “Ja, I vould like zhat Italia.”

Probably the WORST offender of this was when people would write Japan or China. I would hedge a bet that they have no idea how those cultures have been mocked here historically, I didn’t find out until mid-highschool. The dub is bad enough with this, but it doesn’t bode well for people who don’t understand the context to exactly why that’s so uncomfortable. Think of it this way, it’s like that kid in middle school who repeats stuff he hears on south park, without knowing what the show is actually commenting on, or what he’s saying really means. Hell! I pulled this kind of shit too because I didn’t know any better! I didn’t know much about what the cold war was. WWII was just a war where a bunch of the countries fight and germans were bad... right? I mean, until late highschool, here in the US.... history is already pretty “American-pride-centric” and glazes over a lot of details, but let me just tell you... Texas is even WORSE because I spent 2 years having the idea of how goddamed “great” Texas is (and fuck everyone else) shoved down my throat. We weren’t learning history, we were learning a narrative. I learned later on, but when your that young, you for sure belive that the stuff your being told in school is right, if your even paying attention in the first place. So of course there were going to be people young and old who didn’t understand what they were getting into when they got into this fandom and simply copied what they saw.

At its worst, I remember a unsettlingly large amount of people wanting to portray Germany and Prussia in Nazi uniforms because they got off on the image like it was some BDSM power-play.... with Nazis. Yeaaah... 

And of course, at this time, the strip and the manga WERE more centered around WWII... without the horrors of WWII... And we’re left with this weird dynamic of people who know very little about history, don’t get the jokes or the context, but like the characters and try to copy what the show is doing - and the people who do understand the history, and do understand the different cultures.

Some of this stuff is still around today. But the fandom has shrunk significantly. Most of the people I know who have stuck around in this fandom - more like Hetalia for the character’s potential, not necessarily what they actually are.

Back then, when the fandom was big - of course there were a lot of people that weren’t uninformed - but you can’t treat something like Hetalia like a normal anime show. When you have self-inserts based off real countries or even fake countries, unless your dealing with an AU, there are some inherent things that come from a lack of understanding and knowledge because even if Hetalia is a comedy, it is referencing real cultures and events.

This show honestly got me into history, once again for the potential of the characters, the idea of personifications for countries is a great idea for being able to break down the absolute insanity that is the history of the world into digestible chunks, and maybe would even help something that you have no personal experience of - become something you can imagine and empathize with.

But 2012 Hetalia, to me, was a fandom that exploded, but had a million and one pitfalls. Every fandom has it’s ‘cringey’ side, but it was especially uncomfortable at times for the very reason that it references things that actually happens, cultures that actually exist.

Long story short - 2012 was an uncomfortable year - because often times it was hard to avoid the pitfalls of a fandom surrounding a show referencing real history and cultures.

Obviously I’m still in this fandom after all these years, but I certainly don’t remember 2012 very fondly. But honestly I’d love for other people who were there to add to this, as these are only my thoughts and experiences around the whole thing. Thank you for asking! Hope you don’t mind this massive essay in response.

India's changed media consumption habits may remain post lockdown

Initially, it took a nudge. Ramayan was airing on Doordarshan (DD). In Mumbai, the seniors in the Singh family had a plan. “We had grown up with Ramayan. We had emotions and nostalgia attached to it. We wanted our kids to know the story, too,” says Ajit Kumar Singh, a banking sector executive. The family of five comprises Singh, his wife, son, 17, daughter, 26, and his 77-year-old mother-in-law.

“In the beginning, we had to push our daughter a bit to watch the serial,” he says. Many episodes and weeks later, things have fallen into place. During the lockdown, breakfast is about the family watching Ramayan together. “Initially, I was just curious. What was this serial that held people so much in thrall in the 1980s? Slowly, it has grown on me,” says the daughter, Parul Singh.

But it’s the granny, Mandvi Singh, who is the happiest. Life in the big city is a constant chase. “Everybody was busy. We rarely sat down together,” she says. Even when people had the time, they would watch their favourite programmes — news, cooking shows or one of the many soaps — in their own spaces. “Watching Ramayan together in these difficult times is a refreshing change,” says Ajit.

The Singh family has a lot of company in these locked-down days in India. On the back of reruns of old serials like Ramayan, Mahabharat and Buniyaad, for the first time since 2015 (when BARC was launched), the state-run DD has become the topviewed channel in the country (see box).

And its audience engagement has only grown week after week. Who would have thought that amid the plethora of slickly produced sitcoms, movies and originals, mythological shows produced in the 1980s would keep a nation spellbound in these difficult times? “Retreating into the world of Ramayan and Mahabharat is not just about viewing and entertainment. It is a combination of therapy, nostalgia and remembering god amid an unprecedented crisis,” says Santosh Desai, CEO, Future Brands.

A national lockdown that has gone on for five weeks has seen Indians embracing a quieter life. The cacophonous physical world outside has fallen silent, only to be replaced by a vibrant virtual life — experiences streaming via cable, broadband and 4G. News, fantasy, crime, comedy, mythology and pornography all jostle for attention, offering homebound Indians, the more fortunate of them anyway, endless possibilities to stay informed and escape the harsh realities and uncertainties of one of the most tumultuous times in memory.

We have been equipping ourselves with necessary gear for a while. This is a country where buying TVs for homes has historically taken precedence over building toilets. Our affinity for media has only been amplified by a surging smartphone usage (50 crore-plus handsets) and internet connections (72 crore plus), thanks to low-cost Chinese phones and the world’s cheapest data plans.

A life where the virtual takes precedence is a delight for marketers and sociologists. Flows of terabytes of data, relatively easy to measure, can offer an unparalleled peek into human behaviour, the shifting patterns and emerging trends.

Not surprisingly, multiple outfits — from research consultancies such as Nielsen, BARC and Similar-Web to search giants such as Google to platforms such as Razorpay in fintech and dating app Truly-Madly — are watching closely. Nielsen (for smartphone data) and BARC (for TV data) have been releasing in-depth weekly reports since the lockdown began, slicing the data to understand the shifts. ET Magazine mined a slew of data sets to bring you insights on India’s digital life in the time of lockdown.

PM’s Speech

Going Retro Time spent on both TVs and smartphones has gone up, with TV getting the largest share. In both variety and time, viewers are seeking more. Average weekly viewing minutes on TV rose by 38%, even as average number of channels being watched rose from 16 to 22. Some are obvious, like the sharp growth (76%) in non prime time as against prime time (which saw only a 5% uptick) viewing, even as weekly advertising time dipped by 26% to 20 million seconds. With people staying at home, TV viewing time is now spread out through the day. “Content satiates emotional and mental needs as anxiety and panic have risen. We have seen a huge growth of DD and non-prime time viewing,” says Sunil Lulla, CEO, BARC India. Unlike popular perception, DD’s growth has come from across income classes, with upper income households leading the surge.

“Appeal of DD’s shows cuts across segments with very sticky viewers,” he says. Not only has Ramayan’s viewership grown week after week, it is also marked by co-viewing (22% of children are watching with their grandparents) where families get together to watch. Prasar Bharti CEO Shashi Vempati says, “The viewership growth for DD is across segments. What we are witnessing here is the calculus of segmentation being turned on its head, with wholesome family viewing returning. Many decades back, TV was the glue that brought families together.

That is happening again with the epics.” For DD, the lockdown strategy was simple. “We wanted to engage families so that they could stay home to stay safe,” he says. Encouraged, it has launched DD Retro on a pilot basis as a channel to recreate the nostalgia. Meanwhile, consumption of news has grown sharply (219%), followed by movies (73%). “We have seen a viewership surge. Morning viewing time is getting extended into the afternoon. It is also about fresh content. Unlike general entertainment channels (GEC) and sports, news is the only category that can generate fresh content under lockdown,” says MK Anand, MD, Times Network. (It is owned by Times Group, which publishes this newspaper.) GEC saw only a marginal growth of 7%.

There are two possible reasons for this. One is obvious — little availability of fresh content in a lockdown. The second reason is interesting and could offer some clues into how the battle for remote control is shaping up within homes, says Desai. Women, who are a dominant chunk of GEC viewers, may have had to re-prioritise their access to TV amid household chores and stiff competition from kids and men. Interestingly, sports channels that saw a sharp dip, with the cancellation of live sporting events, have witnessed a spike with the live-streaming of WrestleMania and reruns of Indo-Pak cricket classics.

Smartphone View Multiple sources offer insights into smartphone usage in India. “The biggest thing that struck me is how both men and women have taken to digital news at every level of socio-economic strata in metros and non-metros,” says Dolly Jha, country head, Nielsen India. It has been tough for family oriented Indians to practise social distancing. Forced to cut off physical connections, they are making up in the virtual world. “The share of time Indians spent on calling and chatting is 29% as against 12% in the US,” says Jha.

Covid-19 is on everyone’s mind. More than 1 in every 10 respondents used the government’s Aarogya Setu app in the first week of its launch. Also, 40% of Google’s top 100 searches are related to Covid-19, says Nielsen. Time spent on chat and VoIP (19% on average, with women hitting higher at 22%) leads smartphone usage, followed by social networking (15%), video-streaming (14%) and gaming (9% on average, while 15-21-year-olds spend 11% of their time). Santanu Basu, founder, Let’s Game Now, an esports platform, has seen the user base of gamers surge from 17,000 pre-lockdown to 50,000 now. Based on data from SimilarWeb, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and You-Tube are the most popular apps in India. During the lockdown, downloads of almost all these apps have remained stable or dipped, except for TikTok, which saw a big rise. “The sweaty energy that TikTok exudes is a good representative of what is happening in the society at large,” says Desai. He says the depth and breadth of content in TikTok around Covid-19 is far richer than that in other platforms.

World of Smartphones

YouTube search trends echo some of these shifts. News, gaming, at-home workouts and recipe searches for dishes like panipuri saw a big spurt, says Kaushik Das Gupta, group head, insights and partnerships, Google India. OTT player MX Player (owned by Times Group, which publishes this newspaper), which launched seven shows in March, has seen time spent on its platform jump 2.5 times as compared with pre-lockdown days. “Our offering of Hollywood films like Baywatch and Transformers, dubbed in Hindi, is doing well,” says Karan Bedi, CEO, MX Player. Snehil Khanor, cofounder of dating platform TrulyMadly, has seen the number of active users, their engagement and time spent rise even as peak activity time has got extended.

Beyond the Lockdown Whenever the world resets to normalcy, many of these shifts might prove to have been transient. But some could stick or accelerate trends that were already afoot. OTT viewing is one of them. Virtually, all major streaming platforms have witnessed a jump in user base. Some of those users may not log out after the lockdown.

Similarly, digital transactions have witnessed interesting shifts. A recent report by Razorpay, a fintech company, based on pre-lockdown and lockdown transactions, shows that payments for utilities, IT & software, and media & entertainment saw a growth of 73%, 32% and 25%, respectively, even as sectors such as travel dipped by 87%. “Demonetisation was a short-term event. Lockdown will lead to long-term shifts. Behavioural change will be a lot stickier,” says Razorpay cofounder Harshil Mathur.

Indians are also waking up to the convenience of virtual workout coaches. Universal Music MD Devraj Sanyal has used the lockdown period to focus on his physical and mental well-being, spending two hours daily shuffling between fitness regimens. “Those two hours, I think of nothing else. It’s a great way to de-stress in these difficult times. I am 100% sure some of it will stay post-lockdown,” he says.

First off Shrek is one of my favorite movies of all times from DreamWorks. In class, I didn’t know that Shrek was a book and was later made into a movie in. What was interesting to me that I learned in class was that the meaning of” Shrek” (in Yiddish) meant “Fear/fright” was a post-modern parody (making fun of Disney). Anywho this movie is beyond funny I didn’t understand the jokes when I was a kid but best believe I did catch them in movie night. My all-time favorite movie parts of the movie, of course, are the intro to the movie it’s a classic it makes fun of the classic Disney “intro” with the storybook and the “once upon” theme but instead, he rips out a page in the book and starts laughing. The next scene that tickled me is when Lord Farquaad wants to find a wife and he has the talking mirror, that scene reminded me of the price is right and(copies snow white with the mirror) he has the chance to pick from three of the Disney princesses and what gets every time is when he asked the mirror “mirror mirror on the wall is this, not the most perfect kingdom of them all? “uhhhh Thelonious ““punches the mirror (lmfaooo I always die because of this scene I don’t know why it’s just super funny. Lastly, when Princess Fiona has her kick-ass scene (Disney would never OK!) that scene sticks out like a glove because never in a million years do you ever see a princess beat up men in the woods. What surprises me is the classic cliché that the hero gets the girl is a NO because Ron does and he’s the SIDEKICK (like I said he’s the Beyoncé hello we stan.
