Ketchup Stains
have a quick drabble bc mind won't shut up about domestic ava
Fandom: The Wayhaven Chronicles by @seraphinitegames Pairings: Ava du Mortain x f!detective (Olivia Greene) Rating / Warnings: G / none Words: 1k Summary: news flash - Liv yearns for domesticity and the intimacy of washing dishes together. [or read on AO3]
Ava took another plate from the orderly arranged pile of dirty dishes, the afternoon sun breaking off the polished, already clean glasses on the other side of the sink. Olivia doubted there was a single bacteria left on them. With close attention she watched Ava clean the plate, as she had done for the past fifteen minutes, the reports on the table before her long forgotten. A longing overcame her at the sight, a ridiculous one, one she tried to press back down into the back of her mind. “You’re staring,” Ava remarked, glancing up at her and startling Liv out of her thoughts. “Why?” A little embarrassed she lifted her head from where she had rested it on her palm. “Nothing, I just…” For a moment she contemplated telling her she wasn’t watching her, merely staring off into the distance, but ultimately decided against it. “I like watching you do this.”
Ava frowned and paused in her task to look at her again, suspicion in her voice. “Washing dishes, with my arms up to the elbows in dirty dishwater?” “Doing mundane things,” she retorted with a chuckle, sliding off the kitchen chair to make her way over and lean against the counter beside her. “Like household chores.” “Why?” she asked again, hands still frozen mid-air with a half cleaned plate and a sponge dripping with soap in them, seemingly getting more and more confused. “They’re merely necessary tasks, tasks everyone does, what’s so interesting about me doing them?” “I suppose it’s just not what you would expect from an ancient mythical being, that’s all,” she replied with a grin, only earning a sigh from Ava as she stared at her for a split second longer before resigning to her task. “Alright, let me help you,” Liv proposed as a peace offering, pushing herself off the counter and reaching for a dirty bowl. Ava stopped her before she could lift it up. “Not that one. There’s a system, an order - that one’s last.” “I see,” She pressed her lips together, biting back a chuckle. Of course there was. “You could dry them off,” she suggested instead, pointing with her chin towards one of the tea towels as her hands were still submerged in the sink. “Sure,” Liv grabbed the towel, starting to wipe water off a plate and, without noticing, returned to watching Ava. This time from an even better point of view, a nearer ankle that allowed her to study her face more closely - there was no scowl, no frown, her lineaments so relaxed she half expected her to be humming a tune or something. “You seem peaceful while doing this,” she said after a while, breaking the comfortable quiet which had settled between them. A more honest answer to her earlier question. “I like seeing you at peace,” she added a bit quieter, she wished she was more at peace around her, not rigid and constantly on guard. Halting in her chore again Ava cast another glance at her, not intending to meet her gaze, to hold it, but doing so anyway, always doing so anyway. There was surprise written in her eyes and the hint of something else, something she could not quite figure out as moments later it was gone, the tension in her shoulders returning, the guard back on. Clearing her throat she went back to scrubbing a particularly persistent red stain without further comment, her scrubbing a bit more forceful than before. Chastising herself for bringing it up Olivia returned to her task of drying the plates as well. It had only been half the truth. The other half was that she liked to imagine what it would be like to watch her wash the dishes in their sink, what it would be like to fold laundry together, to buy groceries, cook and set the table. What it would be like to have the privilege of seeing her at peace on a quiet sunday morning, making their bed and dusting off a shelf. Somehow she made the most boring, mundane tasks look like the most exciting thing she could imagine spending her time with. Washing the dishes suddenly seemed like the most romantic thing she could think of. Shit, that woman was merely cleaning ketchup stains off some plates and she started playing house in her head. She really had to get a grip on herself. “You should get going before it gets dark, detective. I can put this back on my own.” Ava said as she put the cleaned bowl that was last in order aside, directing her attention to the clock and pulling her out of her thoughts. It was later than she had thought, the sun probably already beginning to set, but she didn’t want to leave, not yet. “What afraid the bogeyman will snatch me?” Ava ignored her remark. “The way is harder to navigate in the dark,” “I’m sure I’ll manage, I know these woods like the back of my hand, you know.” “Olivia,” she muttered frustrated. And while her name was spoken as a reprimand in the way a teacher would, it was lengths better than ‘detective’. “I don’t like-” She paused, sighing in surrender and then pressing the words out as if she had to physically strain herself against admitting it. “I
don’t like the thought of you driving alone through the dark woods - especially not with everything going on.” Yes, there was the something she was prodding her for, admittedly a small confession, but a small win is still a win. One she immediately managed to destroy again. "It's my job to make sure you're safe, isn't it?" However, maybe if she pressed a little more… “If you’re so concerned for me, why not bring me home?” she asked, voice quiet and low as she slid closer on the counter, using her own words against her as no answer came. “It's your job to make sure I'm safe, isn't it?” “I don’t think that will be necessary,” she stated nonchalantly. “As you said, you’ll manage.” An unsuccessful attempt. And though there was a slight edge to Avas voice that betrayed her, she didn’t think she’d get anything more out of her. Olivia finally relented. “Fine” She gathered her reports and wished Ava a good night - merely getting a noncommittal nod and a ‘detective’ in return - before making her way home, to wash her own dishes, alone.

WIP Wednesday
because my writers block managed to fuck off for now <3
“...do you even care?” Her words were merely a whisper, seeming louder in the heavy silence than she had intended.
“Of course I care!” Ava snapped, taking a sudden step closer, her face contorted in anger. “How could you ever think I wouldn’t?”
“I care - too much.” As sudden as her anger had surfaced, it had died down again, replaced by a tiredness that made her shoulders slump. “I care about you more than you coul-”
Her words stammered to a sudden halt, her brows creasing in a deep frown. “I mean, I care about you as-”
She paused as she saw the small glimmer of hope her words had sparked in Olivias eyes extinct again, her gaze falling to the floor.
“Say it.”
“I didn’t-”
“Don’t play dumb, you were obviously about to add something.” Before Ava could say anything more, she added: “You know what, let me guess ‘I care about you...as a member of this team, detective.’” She almost spit out the last word. “Am I right?”
Avas silence said more than enough and a sad smile spread on Olivia's lips, her voice breaking slightly. “Like I said, you’re so predictable.”
Ava could see her eyes shimmer in the moonlight as she turned on her heel, about to flee back into the hallway.
“Olivia-”
Before Ava could stop herself, her hand fast forward to catch her wrist, stopping the detective in her tracks. Her head flew back to meet Avas gaze with her own surprised one, a tear falling from her eye, just as clear as her iris, as if the color of her eyes bled onto her cheek, and on instinct Avas hand came to rest on it, her thumb wiping away the tear in a gentle caress.
For a moment her eyes fluttered at the tender touch, a shaky sigh falling from her lips before looking back up to her with a silent plea, making Avas heart constrict in the confines of her chest. Her lips fell open, desperately trying to form around the words screaming in her head.
Frustrated she shook her head, if she could not express them in this language she would have to find another one.

Six(ish) Sentence Sunday
Was tagged by @winterkeys thank you <3 This is from a fhr wip:
I was once like them, naive enough to believe that if I just gave enough I would eventually get something back, that if I shattered myself for them enough they would accept me one day. That at one point their greed would be sated - but they kept eating, kept ripping me apart, until there was nothing left of me but gnawed off bones. You would think that’s not even possible, to devour another person whole, but I learned if you’re starved enough, you’re capable of much worse.
I cannot blame them, who is to understand hunger better than I?
But I’m no longer begging for shreds, I’m not asking to be accepted anymore - I do not need their acceptance or affection anymore.
Now, I take.
This time I will make sure to sate my own hunger first, to fill the gaping hole in my stomach they left.

WIP Wednesday
It’s early but technically already wednesday here and I just managed to actually write a little for my reincarnation AU!
It was as if someone had taken the memories from her mind, the ones that haunted her dreams, the ones she clung to so desperately, and formed them out of flesh and blood. And she was just as beautiful as Ava had remembered, every line of her face like directly out of a renaissance painting. Relief washed over her, for centuries she had feared that she would slip from her mind, that she would lose what little she still had of her, the ghost of her that Ava was never able to let go off.
And now she was here, right in front of her, breathing and with a beating heart, not just a veil of memories from bygone days. She looked just as she did on the last day she saw her. Grey eyes, resembling the color of clear water, so clear and deep Ava always wanted to drown in them, framed by bright red curls, glowing like embers in the ash. Her fair skin sprinkled with freckles like stars in the night sky, 274 stars to be exact, Ava used to count them for hours. She would connect the constellations, drawings the gods had left on her skin, and her hand twiched at her side, her fingertips almost burning with the memory of the feeling of her skin and for a moment she almost reached out to soothe that ache.
“Is something wrong, agent?”

WIP Wednesday Friday
Was tagged by @graysinblack, thank you <3
Olivia reached the black agency SUV long before the other’s, pulling on the door handle, groaning in impatience when she realized the car was still locked. She threw a glance back at the farm house and the blurred shapes that revealed themselves as unit bravo as they slowly made their way across the farm as well.
Her gaze fell onto her reflection in the toned car windows, but the face that stared back at her was a foreign one. She seemed pale, her eyes dull - void of their usual shine - dark circles formed beneath them, suddenly making her all too aware of her tired limbs and the heaviness tugging on her eyelids.
She was definitely not getting enough sleep but whenever she closed her eyes memories danced across her eyelids like shadows in candlelight. They manifested into a face that slowly became as familiar to her as her own. But as of new, another face had joined, blond strands clinging to bloody cheeks, a gush cutting across a roman nose, light lashes fluttering shut above a pool of liquid emerald.
With a frown she tried her best to bury that image again, now was not the time to let painful memories resurface. She tried to take a calming breath, the air was clear, washed clean by the first summer thunderstorm that twc s just started rumbling across the sky as Avas phone rang, their lazy afternoon interrupted by Rebecca informing them about another kidnapping.
Won’t tag anyone since I’m obviously very late but if you want to share something anyways consider yourself tagged by me!
