The way it's phrased I think this was said as a joke and it's very vague for me to address an issue with it. There is also some harmless fun in a post with people who want to see themselves represented and find some solace in Achilles not being "straight". I think the joke was not meant to be analyzed that much.
Now, I will talk a bit about it just because I haven't spoken about "the ship" in a long time and I want to have a recent reference. The tweet is just the cause, I am not addressing this specific tweet.
There is the phenomenon of modern people trying to put labels on ancient people who didn't use these labels (e.g. how we use the term "gay" may not have expressed homosexual men 2.000 years ago) which I caution against. We can't "reinterpret" ancient relationships with our modern lens and we should not. "Reinterpret" means "reinvent" or "changing how something is viewed". If you change it, it's not what it was anymore. If you don't like how the ancient story is told you can go read something else, what can I say 😂 We don't have an ancient "gayer" or a "more obvious" version, I am sorry!
I'd love representation as much as anyone, and I am against the erasure of "queer" identities from history but here we don't have enough evidence for the two being lovers except that they were two men very close to each other and had great love for each other, which makes them automatically gay.... if you live in the US Bible Zone.
Some people say "but look how devastated and angry Achilles was with Patroclus's death!" as if one can only feel these things only if their lover dies. If one loses a brother I suppose they feel... better than this? They are not devastated? Don't they refuse to eat? They don't want revenge against the one who killed their brother?
Greek culture encourages more affection than many northwest ones and I don't want us to also fall into the trap of "if you are too affectionate with your male friend you are obviously gay". Kissing on the mouth was also traditionally acceptable for Greek men to show kinship. So in this light, we are not sure what this type of affection meant 3.000 years ago.
We don't know too much about funerals and weddings of that time to draw a parallel to the case of Achilles and Patroclus. We know so little that two men having their bones mixed in the grave could be viewed as valid for two metaphorical brothers. Could they be a couple? Potentially! But we really don't know. I wouldn't have any issue if the original text said "aaand then they had sex" (or something somewhat indicative of a romantic or a sexual relationship). But the text doesn't say that so for me the most respectful I can be is "we don't know if they were a couple". We certainly know they were very close and we should be careful to not give them identities we are not sure they would claim for themselves.
It's true that ancient people also speculated and debated about their relationship. We can also speculate and debate about their relationship but I am a supporter of "work with what you have" (especially since we are 2.00 years more removed from the event) because playing the guessing game can steer you away to different stories and theories which might not have been what the older ancients had in mind.
I can acknowledge all the affection and love in the text and in case this made them lovers back then, then sure, no problem. I just don't know if it qualified to make them lovers based on everything I've read. For me, there is the basis to see them as brotherly friends. It's not that I don't want to see them as a couple! I actually would like us to have enough evidence to say that they were lovers! Buuut we don't have it.
And... what if I "reinterpret" Achilles as an aroace?? All the evidence is there for sure. All strong affection, all this connection, but no romance or sex. Maybe he didn't love anyone else romantically or sexually and he deemed brotherhood so high that he wanted his bones mixed with his best friend, whom he saw as a brother??
But well, the argument "the evidence is there" doesn't always work. Anyone can interpret anything to fit their own image. And if we start "reinterpreting" based on what we know today, we project our own wishes and modern ideas into the text and we lose focus of what the text shows us.
If one wants to have them in the back of their head like two gay men and another as asexuals or two trans men, fine! But we should all acknowledge this is only inside our heads and that the old texts can stand on their own. The text doesn't wait for my headcanon to be valid as it is.

So I’m once again stuck thinking about the biggest underlying horror of spn’s worldbuilding, the one that’s been hiding in plain sight since day one: it’s all people. Hunters hunt people the most dangerous game of all. Maybe some so-called “monsters” being Just Some Guy was at first for budget reasons, but they stuck with it and it’s part of the world, and others are by definition people. You may get bitten and you become a werewolf or a vampire, but you’re still a person. Tom Lastname gets bitten, Tom’s a werewolf now. Still human, still Tom.
I’ve wrote about this as there being different subspecies of humans, and a follow-up to that way of looking at it can be this:
The first humans were Adam and Eve.
Eve is the mother of all monsters.
Therefore, all monsters are the offspring of a human. Their father is irrelevant, everything they are comes from Eve. We’re told/shown Eve is a monster in her own right, and so many theology essays could be written about that. But surely the part of her that’s as human as Adam passed on to her offspring. For genetics purposes let’s say Eve’s mitochondrial DNA is monstrous (hers was the first ever, the one thing God himself didn’t have because as a human he’s a man, and neither did Adam, and it’s a part of her all of her offspring have).
Conclusion: “monsters” are all at least partly human. It’s all people. Including leviathans. Which explains why they all have the ability to be Just Some Guy. Part human part monster. How balanced and united are those parts?
The way monsters come to be a very funny and inconsistent thing. Some were birthed (physically or metaphysically, we’re left to wonder) by Eve as what they are. Dragons, shtriga, leviathans, etc. Others become monsters, not because it was something latent within them but because something happened to them, something that can happen to anybody. But the show tells us those are Eve’s children too. So how does it work? Do vampirism and lycanthropy and others like them function as viruses but have Eve’s mitochondrial DNA? Is the child of Eve the thing that infects each new monster? Or was Eve’s child simply patient zero of these infections, and the first time they bit someone they turned part of that person into the monstrous part of themselves? Is biting the transmissal of an infection or a sort of Midas touch, like “I touch you in this way and now part of you is me”? In that case, are all vampires and werewolves replicas of the first ones? Going back to monsters as the sum of two parts, are all vampires’ monstrous parts the same individual, for example? Is there a vampire Self, or just a human Self living in the same body as something that’s just Vampire?
1x06 Skin can be an answer to this. That ep did many things, and one of them was prove monsters have a Self. Shapeshifters were born shapeshifters, but there’s a Self that is unmistakeably human, which suggests the two are one, a whole from the sum of its parts. Does that meld with the human Self of someone who gets bitten or are the two at war? Is there a human Self that is forever stuck in Purgatory after they die, too?
But here’s the part I’m trying to get at: monsters have souls. I’ve said that grace is blood+God’s Light and therefore humans are angels without that light, but I also think that light isn’t a stark line separating the two. Cas became Godstiel fueled by souls, so on a soul level, humans must have something angel grace has too. And if humans do, guess what: so do monsters. All souls have something akin to grace. Like I’ve said before, for better or worse, Eve’s children have something holy.
God creates Adam and Eve as people. People are partly holy, because all creations have a part of their creator in them. Eve is a monster. Eve births more monsters. All monsters are partly people. All monsters are partly holy.
Hunters hunt things and save people. Hunters say “Monsters, simply put, are supernatural creatures that prey on humans.” Hunters hunt and kill people. Monsters are human and hunters are monsters. They send the humanness and holiness that lives inside monsters to Purgatory. Cas devours that holiness and becomes God.
There can only be one God. The souls go back to Purgatory. Nothing changes.

Life Detained.
The Mauritanian director Kevin Macdonald talks with Jack Moulton about researching Guantanamo Bay’s top secrets, Tahar Rahim’s method-acting techniques, the ingenuity of humanity during the pandemic, and his favorite Scottish films.
“You’ve got to understand that for a Muslim man like Tahar, this role has a much greater significance than it does for you or me.” —Kevin Macdonald
It’s not uncommon for a director to release two films in one year, but Academy-Award winning—for his 1999 documentary One Day in September—director Kevin Macdonald is guilty of this achievement multiple times. Ten years ago, he released his first crowd-sourced documentary Life in a Day and the period epic The Eagle within months of each other. A decade on, he’s done it again.
The Scottish director (and grandson of legendary filmmaker Emeric Pressburger) released both his Life in a Day follow-up and the legal drama The Mauritanian this month. The latter tells the story of Guantanamo Bay detainee Mohamedou Ould Slahi (sometimes written as Salahi), who was held and tortured in the notorious US detention center for fourteen years without a charge. The film, adapted from Slahi’s 2015 memoir Guantánamo Diary, features Jodie Foster and Shailene Woodley as his defense attorneys Nancy Hollander and Teri Duncan, with Benedict Cumberbatch, who also signed on as the film’s producer, playing prosecutor Lt. Stuart Couch.

The Mauritanian also introduces French star Tahar Rahim to a global audience, in the role of Slahi. “The ensemble is excellent across the board,” writes Zach Gilbert, “while Tahar Rahim is best in show overall, bringing honorable heart and humanity to his role [of] the titular mistreated prisoner.”
Much of the story is filmed as an office-based legal thriller involving thick files, intense conversations, and Jodie Foster’s very bright lipstick. Macdonald expertly employs aspect ratio to signify narrative shifts into scenes recreating Slahi’s vivid recollections of torture and his achingly brief conversations with unseen fellow detainees.
Qualifying for this year’s awards season due to extended deadlines, The Mauritanian has already earned Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress for Rahim and Foster respectively. Slahi remains unable to travel due to no-fly lists, but he was a valuable resource to the production, providing an accurate and rare depiction of a sympathetic Muslim character in an American film.
It was the eve of Life in a Day 2020’s Sundance Film Festival premiere when we Zoomed with Macdonald. Behind him, we spied a full set of the Italian posters for Michelangelo Antonioni’s classic Blow-Up. As it turns out, he’s not a fan of the film—only the posters—so we got him talking about his desert-island top ten after a few questions about his new film.
The attention to detail on Guantanamo Bay in The Mauritanian is impressive. There are procedures depicted that you rarely see on-screen. How did you conduct your research? Obviously Guantanamo Bay is a place which the American government spends a great deal of effort keeping secret. It was important to Mohamedou and me that we depicted the reality of the procedures as accurately as we possibly could. That research came primarily from Mohamedou who has an incredible memory. He drew sketches and made videos of himself lying down in spaces and showing how he could stretch half his arm out [in his cell]. There are a lot of photographs on the internet of Guantanamo Bay which are [fake] and others are from a later period because the place developed a lot over the years since it started in 2002 and Mohamedou was able to [identify] which photos were rooms, courtyards and medical centers he had been in.

How did you approach creating an honest representation of the graphic torture scenes, without putting the audience through it as well? Whenever films about this period are [made] they’re always from the point of view of the Americans and this time we’re with Mohamedou. You can’t underestimate the fact that there have really been no mainstream American cinematic portrayals of Muslims at all, so in portraying a sympathetic Muslim character who’s also accused of terrorism, you’re pushing some hot buttons with people. It was important that those people who are uncomfortable with him understand why he confessed to what he confessed.
Everything you see in the film is what happened; the only difference is that they weren’t wearing masks of cats and Shrek-like creatures, they wore Star Wars masks of Yoda and Luke Skywalker in this very perverse fucked-up version of American pop culture. Obviously, we couldn’t get the rights to those. Actually, I don’t feel that it is graphic. There is more violence in your average Marvel movie. It’s psychologically disturbing because you’re experiencing this disorientating lighting, the [heavy-metal] music, and he’s being told his mother’s going to be raped and he’s flashing back to his childhood. To be empathizing with this character and then to see them to be so cruelly treated is so deeply disturbing.
How did you prepare Tahar Rahim for his convincing portrayal of such intense pain and suffering? Tahar went through a great deal of discomfort in order to achieve it. He felt that to give a performance that had any chance of being truthful, he needed to experience a little bit of what Mohamedou had suffered, so throughout the movie he would insist on wearing real shackles which made his leg bleed and give him blisters. I would plead with him to put on rubber ones and he would say “no, I have to do this so I’m not just play-acting”.
He starved himself for about three weeks leading up to a torture sequence—he had lost an awful amount of weight and he was really unsteady on his legs. I was very worried about it and I got him nutritionists and doctors but he was determined to stick with that. You’ve got to understand that for a Muslim man like Tahar, this role has a much greater significance than it does for you or me. He felt a great weight of responsibility to do this correctly, not just for Mohamedou, but he was speaking for the whole Muslim world in a way.

What compels you to study this period in time? Mohamedou was released a couple of weeks before Trump came to power in 2016, so the story is still ongoing for him. He’s still being harassed by the American government and he’s not allowed to travel because he’s on these no-fly lists. I didn’t want to make a movie that was saying “George W. Bush is terrible”. We’ve been there, we’ve done that. This is looking back with a little bit of distance and saying “here’s the principles that we can learn from when you sidestep the rule of law”—what it takes to stand up like Lt. Stuart Couch did when everyone else around you is going along with something that’s really terrible.
You see that around Trump with the choices within the Republican Party to stand up and say they’re going to sacrifice their careers to do the right thing. It is a hard thing when there’s this mass hysteria in the air. The basic principles that the lawyer [characters] are representing is not about analyzing and replaying what happened after 9/11, they’re directly related in a bigger way to the world we all inhabit.
Did anything surprise you in how your subjects for Life in a Day 2020 addressed the pandemic? One of the most affecting characters in the film is an American who lost his home and business because of the pandemic, so he’s living in his car. He seems very depressed when you meet him for the first time, then later he’s telling us there’s something that’s giving him joy in his life. He brings out all these drones with these cameras on them and puts on this VR headset and loses himself by flying through the trees. I thought that was such a great metaphor for the way that human ingenuity has enabled us to survive and thrive during the pandemic.
I get the feeling of resilience from [the film]. This is a more thoughtful film than the original one. I see this as a movie of [us] being beware of our susceptibility to disease and ultimately to death and mortality, [and] how we’ve found these consolations as human beings. To me, it’s a really profound thing. It also speaks to the main theme of the film which is how we’re all so similar, same as The Mauritanian. It’s confronting you with all these people and saying we fundamentally all share the basic things that underpin our lives and the differences between us are much less important than the things we have in common.
Let’s go from Life in a Day to your life in film. What’s a Scottish film that you love but you feel is very overlooked or underrated? That’s really hard because there aren’t many Scottish films and there aren’t many good ones. Gregory’s Girl is the greatest Scottish film ever made—it’s the bible for life for me. That’s very well-known, so I would have to say Bill Forsyth’s previous film That Sinking Feeling, which was self-funded and made on 16mm black-and-white. It has some of the same actors and characters as Gregory’s Girl in it. Or my grandfather Emeric Pressberger’s film I Know Where I’m Going! which is a rare romantic comedy set in Scotland.
Tumblr media
John Gordon Sinclair and Dee Hepburn in Bill Forsyth’s ‘Gregory’s Girl’ (1980).
Which film made you want to become a filmmaker? I think it was Errol Morris’s The Thin Blue Line, which is one of the top five documentaries ever made and in my top ten desert-island movies.
What else is in your desert-island top ten? Oh god, don’t! I knew you were going to ask me that. I’ll give a few. I would say there would have to be something by Preston Sturges—maybe The Lady Eve or The Palm Beach Story. There would have to be a film written by my grandfather, so probably The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, which is the best British film ever made. There would have to be Singin’ in the Rain, which is the most purely joyful film I’ve ever seen. There would probably be The Battle of Algiers, which I rewatched recently and was an inspiration on The Mauritanian. Citizen Kane I also rewatched in anticipation of watching Mank, of which I was very disappointed. I thought it completely missed the point and was kind of boring.
Which was the best film released in 2020 for you? I thought the Russian film Dear Comrades! was really stunning. It was made by a director [Andrei Konchalovsky] in his 80s who first worked with Andrei Tarkovsky back in the late 1950s. He co-scripted Ivan’s Childhood. I would love to make my masterpiece when I’m 86 too!

Do You Know God’s Hidden Intention in the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard?
By Cheng Xin
One evening, as I sat at my desk after I prayed to God, I read the parable told by Jesus in Matthew 20:1–16, where the kingdom of heaven is likened to a landowner hiring workers for his vineyard, and giving them the same wages regardless of whether they went into the vineyard first thing in the morning, in the afternoon, or in the evening. When the workers who came first learned of this, they complained to the landowner, but the landowner replied by saying, “Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with my own? Is your eye evil, because I am good? So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen” (Matthew 20:15–16). After reading these lines of scripture from the Bible, I knitted my brows and couldn’t help but think: “It is reasonable to say that those who practice their faith in God for a long time, who forsake and expend more for the Lord, and who toil and work for more years ought to be rewarded with more than those who come later, but in Scripture it says that the wages are the same for those who come early and those who come late. Isn’t this God intentionally showing favoritism for those who come later?” I found these words very confusing. I didn’t understand what the Lord’s intention was in saying these words.
Tumblr media
One day, I ran into a fellow church member, and as we talked I told him about the question that had confused me for so many years. He said, “I also had that kind of misunderstanding. I didn’t understand God’s will until recently, when I read a certain book, that I came to understand this aspect of the truth. It just so happens I’ve brought that book with me today, so let’s take a look at it together.” As he said that, he took the book out of his bag and read me a passage, “No matter how much you are able to accept, no matter how much you have heard, how much you have understood, how much you live out or how much you obtain, there is one fact: The truth, the way and the life of God is bestowed freely on each and every person, and this is fair to each and every person. God will not favor one person over another due to someone being a new believer, who has only believed for a couple of months, or someone who has believed for two years, for 10 years or for 20 years; nor will He treat anyone differently because of their age, their appearance, their gender, the family they were born into or their family’s background. Each and every person obtains the same from God. He doesn’t make anyone obtain less, or make anyone obtain much more. To each and every person this is fair and reasonable. He provides for man in time and in proportion, not letting them go hungry, cold or thirsty” (“Man is the Greatest Beneficiary of God’s Management Plan”). After finishing reading, he continued, “In the past I also thought that if those who believed in the Lord for a long time and expended themselves more for the Lord are given the same rewards as those who believed for a shorter time and who expended themselves less for the Lord, wasn’t this God showing favoritism? But after I read that passage, I finally got rid of the misunderstanding I had about God. It turns out that God treats each and every person fairly. He doesn’t show favoritism to any one person, regardless of whether they are a new believer or have believed for many years, and regardless of their family background, their appearance, and so on. God always provides for each and every person in accordance with their needs. The truth God bestows upon man as He does His work to save mankind is the same, and similarly He arranges environments and opportunities for each and every one of us. Whether or not we are ultimately able to gain the truth depends upon whether we ourselves love and pursue the truth, whether we are able to practice the Lord’s word, and whether we are able to perform our duties in accordance with the Lord’s will and demands. If we do not love the truth, and if we do not pursue the truth, then we are unable to do the things that God has entrusted to us in accordance with His will, and when we encounter things that don’t conform to our own notions, we won’t contemplate or seek God’s will, but instead we will analyze matters with our own minds, and perhaps even misunderstand God or blame God. People who do this, even if they have believed in God for many years and done much labor and work, will obtain nothing in the end, and will even lose the opportunity God gives them to obtain the truth. In God’s eyes, these people are evil-doers, and they can only be eliminated and punished by God. There are also some people who, although they have only believed in God for a short period, have hearts that thirst for and seek the truth. When things happen to them, they are usually able to pray to God to seek the truth, and once they understand God’s will, they are able to practice according to His word. As such people follow God, bit by bit, their corrupt dispositions change, they obtain the truth, and live out normal humanity. Such people have a good final destination.
“I thought of how, when God led the Israelites out of Egypt and into the wilderness to Canaan, those able-bodied men and those tall ‘warriors’ people looked up to did not seek God’s will, and even blamed God, and how in the end they fell dead in the wilderness. Yet those women and children who had pure obedience, who practiced according to God’s word, and who obeyed God’s orchestrations and arrangements ultimately entered the good land of Canaan. Also, the Jewish chief priests, scribes and Pharisees were familiar with the Scripture and proficient in the law, and some had traveled to the far corners of the earth to spread the gospel, so they felt as though they had believed in God the longest and toiled and worked the most of all people, and that they were the most qualified to welcome the Messiah and be selected by God. Yet when the Lord Jesus came to do His work, they knew that the Lord Jesus’ words had authority and power, but they were stubborn and arrogant. They refused to set aside their positions to seek the truth, refused to accept God’s new work, and even used all of their knowledge of the Scriptures to condemn and resist the Lord’s new work. In the end, to protect their own positions and livelihoods, they nailed the Lord to the cross, causing them to be cursed and punished by the Lord. But all those disciples selected by the Lord, the Jewish people who followed the Lord, and people from all the nations beyond Israel, despite the fact that they had not believed in God for as long as the Pharisees and did not have as much knowledge of the Scriptures, and had not toiled and worked as the Pharisees had, or traveled to the far corners of the earth to spread the gospel, still had hearts that feared God, and because they thirsted for and sought the truth, they received the Lord’s salvation.
“From this, we can see that the view that we can evaluate who is qualified to receive God’s rewards and blessings based on who has believed in God for the longest time and who has expended, toiled, and worked the most does not conform to the truth. It is an erroneous way of thinking. God certainly does not issue rewards and punishments or decide people’s ends based on these external factors. Rather, He looks at whether or not we have gained the truth through believing in God, and whether or not we are people who do the will of God. Just as the book says, ‘I decide the destination of each person not on the basis of age, seniority, amount of suffering, and least of all, the degree to which they invite pity, but according to whether they possess the truth. There is no other choice but this’ (‘You Ought to Prepare a Sufficiency of Good Deeds for Your Destination’). ‘To God, no matter whether a person is great or insignificant, as long as they can listen to Him, obey His instructions and what He entrusts, and can cooperate with His work, His will, and His plan, so that His will and His plan can be accomplished smoothly, then that conduct is worthy of His remembrance and worthy of receiving His blessing. God treasures such people, and He cherishes their actions and their love and affection for Him. This is God’s attitude’ (‘God’s Work, God’s Disposition, and God Himself I’).
“These two passages clearly explain the standards by which God measures man and God’s attitude toward man. God has a righteous and holy disposition, and He is fair and impartial toward each and every person. He does not look at whether a person is of low or high status, or at their seniority, or how long they have believed, or how much suffering they have endured. Rather, He looks at whether a person pursues the truth, whether a person loves God and has a heart obedient to God, whether they are able to consider and satisfy God’s will in all things, and whether they ultimately gain the truth through their faith in God. Among those of us who believe in God, regardless of whether we are priests, elders, or ordinary believers, each and every one of us who thirsts for and seeks the truth, and who is humble and obedient, is able to receive God’s enlightenment, and is able to receive God’s blessings just like those who came later to the vineyard. Anyone who believes in God for a long time but does not pursue the truth, and instead clings to fallacies, lives within their notions and imaginings, and shows off their seniority and qualifications, no matter how much suffering they endure, how much they expend themselves, or how qualified they are, in the end they will not obtain the truth, and they will all be eliminated. This is an immutable fact, and is decided by God’s righteous disposition.”
After I heard his fellowship, I understood that no matter how much God’s work does not conform to our notions, God is still righteous, that we shouldn’t be choosy or doubt anything that God does, and that we must let go of our notions, seek, and obey. Just as God’s word says, “Everything that God does is righteous. Though you are unable to discover it, you should not make judgment as you please. If it appears to you as irrational, or if you have a conception about it, and then say God is not righteous, this is the most unreasonable” (“How to Understand the Righteous Disposition of God”). God observes our hearts and minds, God has a thorough understanding of us, and God knows best who truly believes in Him and who loves the truth, and who is a hypocrite and detests the truth. God decides our endings based not on how long we have believed in God or how much work we have carried out, but rather on whether we love the truth in essence and whether we ultimately gain the truth through our faith in God. This truly is fitting! Now I can see that my notion that God showed favoritism for those who came later by making the wages the same for those who come early and those who come late to the vineyard was mistaken!
Thanks be to God for resolving this puzzle in my mind. May all glory be to God!

Will Jesus Return to Earth Not in Israel but at Other Place?
Dear Xiaoxi,
Tumblr media
Yesterday I learned from Brother Liu that the church in our hometown had become more desolate now. And I heard that in order to revive the church, you often fasted and prayed, and even ate nothing for twenty days with the result that you fainted from hunger. Learning of this, I am very anxious, and I really want to have a good talk with you right away. But there is something to do in the church, so I have to ask Brother Liu to take you this letter first.
Xiaoxi, the desolation in the church is a widespread situation throughout the religious world nowadays. Moreover, the signs of the Lord’s return have already basically been fulfilled. So we must not sit around waiting for the Lord’s coming. We should go to find a church with the Holy Spirit’s work and follow the footsteps of the Lamb. I remembered we often fellowshiped about the topic of the Lord’s return together before. When it came to the location where the Lord would appear when He returned, we studied Zechariah 14:4: “And his feet shall stand in that day on the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall split in the middle thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.” Through this verse, we thought it prophesied that when the Lord returned, He would most certainly be on the Mount of Olives in Judea and appear to those who were attentively waiting for Him. So these years we have been focusing on Israel. Especially, after the four blood moons appeared, we paid more attention to it, for we couldn’t wait to get the news of the Lord’s return. At that time, some people preached to us that the Lord Jesus had already come back, appearing and working in China. And they advised us to seek and investigate as quickly as possible for fear of missing the opportunity to welcome the return of the Lord. However, we thought: What they preached is not in accordance with the prophecies of the Bible, and that since God’s previous two stages of work were both carried out in Israel, the place where believers for generations lives, how can He appear and work in China? What’s more, through history, China is the country where people burn incense, worship Buddha and evil spirits, and Christians are persecuted most severely. It is the most backward country, the one most unwilling to believe in God. So God will not possibly appear to work in China. Therefore at the time, we refused it and went on staying in the church, waiting for the Lord to appear on the Mount of Olives in Judea someday.
After coming here, I met Brother Zhao. What he said changed my point of view. He fellowshiped, “It is said in the Bible, ‘O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who has known the mind of the Lord? or who has been his counselor?’ (Romans 11:33-34). The wisdom of God is unfathomable to man. We cannot analyze God’s work according to our own mind. Moreover, God never discusses the work He will do with us human in advance, but directly does the work He needs to do, and then we will know Him from His work and follow Him. Similarly, as to the Lord’s return in the last days, we shouldn’t define His appearance in our own conceptions in advance, either. We should seek more and pray more to the Lord. Only in this way can we purely understand the prophecies of the Lord, and welcome His coming.”
Hearing Brother Zhao’s words, I thought of the Pharisees of the past. Seeing that the Lord Jesus was neither called the Messiah nor born in the royal palace, they opposed and condemned the Lord Jesus in accordance with the letters of the prophecies and their conceptions and imaginations. In the end, they nailed Him to the cross, which provoked God’s disposition, and then they fell under God’s wrath. In the last days, regarding the prophecies of the return of the Lord, if we hold on to our conceptions and imaginations, unconsciously, we will also take the Pharisees’ path of resisting the Lord. That will be dangerous. Only then did I realize that if we kept waiting like that, we could never welcome the Lord. So I began to put aside my own notions, and often prayed to the Lord to seek His guidance.
I thank the Lord for hearing my prayer. Afterward, I found some verses. Malachi 1:11: “For from the rising of the sun even to the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles… said the LORD of hosts.” And the Isaiah records: “Who raised up the righteous man from the east, called him to his foot, gave the nations before him, and made him rule over kings? he gave them as the dust to his sword, and as driven stubble to his bow. He pursued them, and passed safely; even by the way that he had not gone with his feet” (Isaiah 41:2-3). Matthew 24:27: “For as the lightning comes out of the east, and shines even to the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” From “the Gentiles,” “raising up the righteous man from the east,” and “the lightning comes out of the east” mentioned in these scriptures, we can see that the location where the Lord returns to work is in the east, and the Gentiles. And China is right situated in the East of the world. It, an atheist country, has never worshiped God and has been persecuting Christians throughout history. Chinese people was once called “gentile dogs” by some Christian countries. China is just the classic example of Gentile country. After studying these verses, I found that actually, there are records in the Bible prophesying that in the last days God will appear and work in China. What we thought before is wrong and it really originates from our conceptions and imaginations.
In order to get a clearer understanding of the problem, I sought out Brother Zhao to fellowship with. At that time, Brother Zhao fellowshiped a lot with me, which made my heart brighten. What impressed me most are these two passages of words read by him. Now I copy them to show you.
“He led the Israelites and was born in Judea, and He is also born in a Gentile land. Is not all His work for the whole of the mankind that He created? Does He love Israelites a hundred fold and loathe Gentiles a thousand fold? Is that not your notion? … If you still maintain that God is the God of Israelites only, and still maintain that the house of David in Israel is the origin of God’s birth and that no nation other than Israel is qualified to ‘produce’ God, and even less is any Gentile family able to personally receive Jehovah’s work—if you still think this way, then does that not make you an obstinate holdout? … You also have never thought about how God could personally descend in a Gentile land. He ought to descend on Mount Sinai or the Mount of Olives and appear to Israelites. Are not Gentiles (that is, people outside of Israel) all objects of His loathing? How could He personally work among them? All these are the deep-rooted notions that you have developed over many years. The purpose of conquering you today is to smash these notions of yours. You thereby have seen God personally appearing among you—not on Mount Sinai or on the Mount of Olives, but among people whom He has never led in the past” (“The Inside Truth of the Conquering Work (3)”).
“I will make all people know that I am not only the God of the Israelites, but also the God of all the nations of the Gentiles, even those that I have cursed. I will let all people see that I am the God of all creation. This is My greatest work, the purpose of My work plan for the last days, and the only work to be fulfilled in the last days” (“The Work of Spreading the Gospel Is Also the Work of Saving Man”).
After I finished reading them, I suddenly realized: Right! God is not only the God of Israelites, but also the God of all mankind! The entire world is created by Him. He has the right to appear and work in any country, not subject to the bondage of any regulation, for He is not the private property of any country or nation. However, when we saw that God’s previous two stages of work were carried out in Israel, we formed notions within us that when the Lord returns, He will only appear in Israel, and won’t appear and work in the Gentile nations. Weren’t we like the Pharisees at that time who clung to the letters in the Scriptures and resisted the Lord Jesus? It can be seen that such notion is our misunderstanding and definition about God. If we hold on to it, how can we be approved by the Lord? In fact, the matter that the Lord has returned and become flesh to appear and work in China contains His wisdom and wondrousness. If He returned and continued to descend into Judea to work, we would always delimit God within Israel, maintaining that God only is the God of Israelites. God’s wisdom is really unfathomable to us.
Having lived in our notions before, when we heard that the Lord had appeared in China, we didn’t investigate and only waited for God to appear on the Mount of the Olives in Israel. It is too absurd! Now the religious world is desolate and the disasters become more and more severe. So we can’t continue to hold on to our conceptions and imaginations to wait for God’s appearance. We should break through the conceptions of our nationality to look for the footsteps and appearance of the Lord. Only in this way can the problem of the desolation of the church be solved. During this time, I am investigating God’s appearance and work in China, finding that their preaching indeed has the truth, which is capable of solving our problems and difficulties and also tell us very clearly about the reason why the churches have become desolate. Their preaching indeed can provide for our life needs.
Xiaoxi, I hope you can also let go of your notions, immediately take the initiative to seek and investigate the work of God’s appearance in the last days, and lead the brothers and sisters of the church out of the desolation soon. I look forward to hearing your good news!
Sincerely yours,
Li Yu

Neoliberalism: the idea that swallowed the world
The History of World Cup Football
The FIFA World Cup (often known as the Football World Cup or simply the World Cup) is the most crucial competition in international football (football), and the sector’s maximum representative crew sports occasion. Organised by way of Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport’s governing frame, the World Cup is contested by the guys’ national football teams of FIFA member international locations. The championship has been presented each 4 years since the first tournament in 1930 (besides in 1942 and 1946 because of World War II), but it’s miles more of an ongoing occasion as the qualifying rounds of the competition take region over the 3 years previous the very last rounds.ThNeoliberalisme final tournament section (often called the “Finals”) involves 32 countrywide groups competing over a 4-week duration in a previously nominated host nation, with those video games making it the most broadly-viewed wearing event inside the International.[1] In the 17 tournaments held, best seven nations have ever gained the World Cup Finals. Brazil is the modern-day holders, in addition to the most successful World Cup crew, having won the match five times, while Germany and Italy observe with three titles each. The next football World Cup Finals may be held in Germany.
The first worldwide soccer match changed into played in 1872 between England and Scotland, although at this degree the game becomes rarely played outside Great Britain. As football started out to grow in recognition, it was held as a demonstration recreation (and not using medals awarded) at 1900, 1904 and 1906 Summer Olympics earlier than soccer became a reliable opposition at the 1908 Summer Olympics. Organised by means of England’s Football Association, the occasion becomes for newbie players only and changed into regarded suspiciously as a show instead of a competition. The England national newbie soccer team received the occasion in both 1908 and 1912.
With the Olympic event persevering with to be contested handiest among amateur teams, Sir Thomas Lipton organized the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy tournament in Turin in 1909. The opposition is frequently defined as The First World Cup and featured the maximum prestigious professional club sides from Italy, Germany, and Switzerland. The first event changed into won by West Auckland, a novice side from north-east England that was invited after the Football Association refused to be associated with the competition. West Auckland lower back in 1911 to successfully guard their identity and have been given the trophy to preserve forever, as per the regulations of the competition.
In 1914, FIFA agreed to understand the Olympic match as an “international soccer championship for amateurs”, and took duty for establishing the occasion. This led the manner for the world’s first intercontinental football competition, at the 1924 Summer Olympics. Uruguay won the tournament, before prevailing the gold medal once more in 1928, with every other South American team, Argentina, taking silver. In 1928 FIFA made the selection to stage their own international tournament. With Uruguay now two-time authentic football international champions and due to having fun their centenary of independence in 1930, FIFA named Uruguay because of the host us of a.
The 1932 Summer Olympics, held in Los Angeles, did not plan to include soccer as part of the program due to the low popularity of soccer in the United States. FIFA and the IOC additionally disagreed over the popularity of newbie gamers, and so football became dropped from the Games.FIFA president Jules Rimet thus set approximately setting up the inaugural World Cup match to be held in Uruguay in 1930. The national institutions of selected nations have been invited to send a team, however, the desire of Uruguay as a venue for the opposition meant a protracted and high priced trip across the Atlantic Ocean for European sides. Indeed, no European united states of America pledged to ship a group till two months before the begin of the competition.Rimet subsequently persuaded teams from Belgium, France, Romania, and Yugoslavia to make the experience. In overall thirteen international locations took part — seven from South America, four from Europe and from North America.
A spin-off match, the FIFA Women’s World Cup, became first held in 1991. It is much like the men’s event in layout, but thus far has no longer generated the equal degree of interest.
Swallowed and Spit Out
When I changed into a little boy in Sunday School I heard the tale of Jonah being swallowed by a massive fish world.
I remember being a chunk skeptical on the whole idea and changed into by no means pretty positive what the point of such a story turned into. But recently I determined to observe that story extra extensively. This is what I discovered.
Jonah, Chapter 1 – Verse 1 – The phrase of the Lord got here to Jonah son of Amittai.
Jonah lived approximately 800 years before the time of Christ. Very few actual facts are known about Jonah, though there are numerous extra-biblical testimonies and legends approximately the events that he records in this book. The word “phrase of the Lord” is from the Hebrew debar-Yahweh and means it became a message at once from God to Jonah.
Verse 2 – Get up! Go to the excellent metropolis of Nineveh and preach in opposition to it, because their wickedness has faced Me.
God informed Jonah to head hold forth in Nineveh. Nineveh turned into the most important town within the international at that point and become the capital of the Assyrian Empire. The city became ruled by the enemies of the Jews.
Verse three – However, Jonah were given up to flee to Tarshish from the Lord’s presence. He went right down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish.
Jonah refused to obey God and ran inside the contrary direction instead. Jonah idea that via strolling away he would keep away from the presence of God. When we do things we recognize we need to no longer do, we regularly need to skip church and keep away from our each day Bible analyzing and prayer.
Verse four – Then the Lord hurled a violent wind on the ocean, and this type of violent typhoon arose on the ocean that the ship threatened to break apart.
Jonah concept he could run from God, however fast found out that God is everywhere. God sent such a storm towards that ship that it nearly broke into pieces. Though God is a loving and merciful God, He is aware of a way to get our interest whilst He needs to.
Verse 7 – Come on! The sailors said to every other, Let’s sold lots. Then we’re going to understand who’s accountable for this hassle we’re in. So they sold lots, and the lot singled out Jonah.
Though the sailors had been not followers of God (see verse five), they identified the hand of God when they saw it. Casting masses changed into an old skool manner of figuring out something whilst there has been the no different manner to find a solution. Sort of like flipping a coin in our contemporary society. People who cast lots believed that God, or destiny, or a few other electricity, would choose successfully. Often a bunch of flat stones was positioned in a bag. One stone might be marked in some manner. Whoever pulled out the marked stone become the “winner.” In this situation, God directed the lot to fall on Jonah, who changed into certainly the guilty one. Numbers 32:23 – Be positive our sin will find us out.
Verse 12 – He responded them, “Pick me up and throw me into the ocean so it may cool down for you, for I recognize that I’m guilty of this violent storm that is against you.”
Jonah immediately knew that it was his disobedience to God that had caused the storm. Deep interior, we know when we’ve accomplished wrong and need to be punished. His disobedience had endangered the lives of the complete group. Anytime we sin, those around us can also come to be caught up in the effects of our sin. We have an obligation to live rightly before God for the sake of others.
Jonah became so centered on his own sinfulness that he misunderstood the reason of the storm. God turned into not seeking to kill Jonah. God became looking to get Jonah to repent of his sin and return to a place of obedience. Jonah told the guys to throw him overboard, questioning that his demise might satisfy the wrath of God and the typhoon would quit. There is only ONE MAN’S loss of life that might satisfy the wrath of God, and that man is Jesus! We have to stop making everything approximately us and receive God’s mercy.
Verse 17 – Then the LORD appointed a first-rate fish to swallow Jonah…
“Appointed” is the Hebrew word mana, which literally approaches “prepared.” God had prepared this fish to do that unique activity at this particular time in Jonah’s existence. Though we often run the incorrect path and do the wrong factor, God is continually organized to turn our mess into something terrific. This may additionally be a completely unique fish that God prepared entirely for this cause. God frequently does “once in a lifetime” matters for us, for which we should be grateful. This may also have been an everyday fish that God used in a special way. God regularly uses the everyday things in existence to make His will regarded to us. Whether it turned into a special fish or a regular fish, God becomes going to apply it to educate Jonah a critical lifestyles lesson. Whether God uses specific reports or ordinary occurrences, He will manual us if we can discover ways to pay attention. Some skeptics have argued that the entire Jonah tale changed into too wonderful to trust.
Could an extraordinary fish virtually swallow a person?
There are two varieties of acknowledged fish which might be huge sufficient to swallow a man. One is the Balaenoptera Musculus – sulfur-backside whale. The difference is the Rhinodon Typicus, frequently called the whale shark. It is the biggest fish in the global. Both feed by using starting their great mouths and scooping up big quantities of water and whatever else is in it. The pressure out the water and swallow the relaxation. Neither have enamel, in order that they do no longer chew up their trap, they just swallow it completely. These fish have four-6 compartments in their stomachs, anybody of that is massive sufficient for a person to match in. In the head of the whale is an air storage chamber that measures 7 feet excessive, 7 ft extensive and 14 toes lengthy. If the whale swallows something that gets in its nasal sinus chamber in which all the air is saved, it offers the whale a head ache and it goes to shore and spits it out. Though God may have used some unique fish that He created just for the single cause of swallowing Jonah, God may want to have also used either one of the sorts of ordinary fish. Either manner, God becomes the only making all this take place.
Could a Person Survive Being Swallowed By Such a Creature?
The Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper quoted an editorial written by Dr. Ransome Harvey who stated a canine become misplaced overboard from a ship. It became found inside the head of a whole six days later. The canine was each alive and barking! (Page 18 of “Jonah” Dead or Alive? By J. Vernon McGee.)
Frank Bullen wrote a book referred to as “The Cruise of the Cathalot” which tells the real tale of a fifteen-foot shark which turned into swallowed alive by way of a whale and become spit out simply before a whaling ship killed the whale. (Page 18 of “Jonah” Dead or Alive? By J. Vernon McGee.)
M. De Parville, a well-known French scientist, records the story of James Bartley, who lived in the Falkland Islands of South America, who became stated to have drowned at sea. Two days after Mr. Bartley’s disappearance, some sailors killed a whale. When they reduce the whale up, to their wonder, they located Mr. Bartley inside, unconscious however alive. He recovered and lived a long and regular life. (Page 19 of “Jonah” Dead or Alive? By J. Vernon McGee.)
Dr. Harry Rimmer, president of the Research Science Bureau of Los Angeles, writes about an English sailor who turned into swallowed through a huge Rhinodon inside the English Channel. He fell overboard trying to harpoon the beast and it became around and swallowed him. Forty-eight hours later that identical fish was finally slain and the sailor changed into interior alive. He recovered in simplest a depend on hours. (Page 19 of “Jonah” Dead or Alive? By J. Vernon McGee.)
We can also pick out to trust by means of religion that this changed into a unique fish God made just for this cause and feel no need for a systematic explanation. We may additionally pick to just accept science’s examples of past “Jonah – like” occurrences. Either manner, faith, and technology agree that a person can be swallowed by a large fish and live to tell about it.
Verse 17 -… And Jonah turned into inside the fish three days and 3 nights.
“Three days and three nights” was how long Jonah spent inside the fish. This became most probably how long it took to get Jonah from in which he was NOT purported to be to in which he was supposed to be. Though God can turn our messes into something desirable, we may additionally spend a time period in the darkest messes of our lives. We should not assume “on the spot” fixes from God, He seldom works that way.
Export Processing Zones (EPZs) and Their Effects on the Growth of the “Globalization Project”
Allow me to begin this article by simply introducing a few primary definitions. In well known, the globalization challenge is referred to as the actions taken vicinity with the aid of the government to take part in the world economy, generally thru liberalization; giving out free of trade and cutting off custom regulations. The manner of growth of international change and monetary waft, in addition, to go with the flow of manufacturing elements for an economy together with foreign direct investments are the primary acts below the globalization challenge in an economic sense. Some records available display that this international movement -the globalization challenge -has raised the residing requirements for many, benefiting humans all internationally. But I might have to mention that on the same time, it additionally has promoted poverty throughout the globe (in an effort to be mentioned in this article because it keeps). The globalization venture has many components to itself which one, in particular, may be defined because of the development of EPZs, the neoliberal reasonable technique toward the global marketplace and changes plans which include those used at the time of debt crises.
Since the financial disaster in the west in the 1980s (will attend to date as we continue with the rest of the thing), export processing zones have grown to be a totally vital a part of neoliberalism development approach, which another time falls under the globalization project. Entry to the global marketplace appears to be a completely tempting possibility for many countries since it attracts foreign markets and increases the GDP, the profits of the government thru appeal of overseas currencies and the variety of sales of the domestic goods on a more scale. The improvements in sales of a rustic are applicable to the delivery and demand figures for home merchandise. The truth that the customer demand rises whilst the marketplace is extended helps a rustic to boom its exports. EPZs are a well-known technique for the governments to advantage smooth get right of entry to the worldwide marketplace. Export processing zones are described regions of a rustic that are designed to attract overseas investments thus; based what explained formerly. The efforts start where government law, taxes and change price lists are lifted or are reduced. It is assumed that thru the entry inside the world marketplace, the economy of any use of a could gain impressively without any losses, but while tested, globalization has some poor elements towards such countries. Such examples can be cited as downgrading the social goals of the countrywide improvement of a rustic and favoring the wealthy with the intention to assist them to earn the greater profit at the same time as the negative suffer even greater. Thus, one should genuinely say that the acts of globalization promote poverty indirectly.
Practically, export processing zones (EPZs) are used as an approach to promote financial development; consequently, EPZs are connected to the globalization situation through the elaboration of such traits. The aim of globalization is extra numerous than what it appears it’d be. It could have been addressed to because the improvement of the economy on the global scale, whilst the internals, national trends of a country are not much affected by the mission. EPZs are beneficial a good way to reap this aim and that they permit countries to reach out to the international market in spite of the poor aspect of employment and wages that EPZs would possibly convey for the nations concerned. The position of the country in labor-control family members and the kind of workers hired in those export zones is another thing that would relate the increase of globalization venture to EPZs. These roles are a few essential variables which would possibly affect the kingdom’s capability to maximise the economic ability of EPZs, ensuing in incomes extra money/profit. Then once more the shortage of regulations in these change zones comes at a superb value to employees, affecting their rights, fitness troubles and protection, environmental requirements of the place of job and social protections. Governments would possibly grow their income, but they will face some internal troubles inside the future instead. People on the EPZs are employed through short-term contracts (instance could be like 3 months contracts) which increase the quantity of employee turnover is such areas. Companies in the EPZs also deny additional training for the employees. Not simplest this will boom the fashion among the personnel, but it’d also create unrest; people could much more likely cross on riots, especially due to the fact that they need to acquire everlasting jobs in evaluation to an activity that would allow them to off at any time. Ergo low-grade jobs are created at these nations. The way to such a hassle might be creating a manufacturing line. If manufacturing takes the region, a want for excessive professional employees and employees might appear that demand higher wages. In this situation, a multiplier effect on employment is taking place which expands the home market. This helps out such international locations to broaden a great deal faster and better, similar to what the western countries did which will achieve independence of their development degree/venture.
The export processing zones/unfastened exchange zones have a tendency to be an appeal for the capitalist ideology. They have minimal custom manipulate and home taxes which help agencies benefit a lot greater from their sales. Another appeal of EPZs is the negotiation option to be had to the personnel. EPZs permit labor forces to prepare themselves freely and bargain collectively, however broadly speaking inside the favor of the business although. Another issue would be that multinational companies involved in the globalization assignment advantage with the aid of the collection of huge sums of cash earned as income and are furnished titanic wealth through EPZs. EPZs come across infinite possibilities of alternate without limits that companies could use for his or her blessings. As mentioned in “Development and Social Change” via Philip McMichael, EPZs mean extra freedom for the commercial enterprise, but much less freedom for human beings.
Sometimes EPZs are concerned in the exportation of resources and uncooked materials, a thing that makes the poor countries worried in the globalization undertaking stay terrible. Such countries are forced into exporting their commodities because of many elements which a number of such reasons are argued approximately and are stated in this newsletter because the target market follows on reading.
This ideology of neoliberalism makes use of an element known as debt. Many developing nations are in debt and poverty nowadays, partly due to the guidelines that a few global institutions consisting of the World Bank or IMF have developed and spread around the globe. Debt is used by the rich nations around the globe to get in contact with the bad international locations in an effort to advantage get admission to their raw materials for inexpensive fees. Basically, debt management is being utilized by the rich countries as a tool to take away the poor countries in dependencies and to make the unfortunate regions dependent on loans. When tariffs are in location, countries recognition on the improvement of internal industries and they compete so one can grow their income, but while in debt, price lists and different controls are removed which leads to increscent of inexpensive exports (especially raw substances) and imports of finalized products from the other countries. When a rustic is in debt, it’s miles forced to promote its merchandise in mass amounts and for less expensive expenses which will a pay sure portions of the loan payments as quickly as viable. This strategy has affected the dwelling standards of such international locations for many years. An instance of this trend would go back to the Nineteen Seventies and 80s, all through the “Lost Decade”. The global skilled a debt crisis in which incredibly indebted international locations, frequently developing Latin American international locations have been not able to pay off their worldwide debts. Mexico turned into the primary to claim incapacity to pay off its debt, and the scandal spread to the rest of the sector in a blink of an eye. To counter this, “structural adjustment ideology” (liberalization and privatization) changed into administered, run by IMF and the World Bank. Long-term business debts were concerned in this case which became amassed in the public sector. The governments of such developing countries which includes Mexico have been no longer able to repay the money, so financial rescue operations had been given precedence to and became necessary. The disaster of the nineteen eighties became commonly as a result of lengthy-term loans that governments took from foreign forces/banks together with some official grants and loans that might have assisted out their nation’s private area.
