California Peppertree
Schinus molle (Peruvian pepper, also known as American pepper, Peruvian peppertree, escobilla, false pepper, rosé pepper, molle del Peru, pepper tree, peppercorn tree, California pepper tree, pirul, Peruvian mastic, Anacahuita o Aguaribay and Pepperina)
Sprouted 15 years ago (2008) in our yard. 30 feet in diameter now. Never been pruned (I’ve totally ignored it - no water or fertilizer either).
I’m going to be pruning it today. Cutting out conflicting branches, dead wood, suckers, and lower branches.

Peppercorn Tree (schinus molle) It is native to the Peruvian Andes. The bright pink fruits of Schinus molle are often sold as "pink peppercorns" although S. molle is unrelated to true pepper (Piper nigrum). Also know as Peruvian pepper, American pepper, Peruvian peppertree, escobilla, false pepper, rosé pepper, molle del Peru, pepper tree, peppercorn tree, California pepper tree, pirul, Peruvian mastic, Anacahuita o Aguaribay and Pepperina. They grow to 15 meters (50 feet). Out at Gunnedah in central west NSW this weekend. I remember climbing these as a kid at school in Dubbo. They’re all over the central west. Tough as nails tree. #peppercorn #peppercorntree #schinusmolle #tree #pepper #redpepper #shade #mygarden #red #green #myplants #homegrown #australiangardens #australiangarden #hardy #easygrow (at Gunnedah Show Society) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cdxc0_WPm3d/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Serú Girán, Cinema Verité. Pepperina.
Por otro lado, voh, a voh, te extraño.
Y a ella? Le tengo miedo. Y prefiero seguir teniendo miedo a no sentir nada. No te vayas, pero no se por que.

30 novembre au 6 décembre 2020
My first week on my own... and it went very well, in my opinion. I decided to work a lot with Michele and Karim the other two gardeners. Michele has been here over 20 years and Karim has been here around four or five. Last week the arboriculturists finished pruning all the Pinus on the property. There is also a lot of debris from pruning the olive trees from the recent harvest. It is our job to put it all through this mobile shredder.
Tumblr media
I decided to earn bonus points by doing some much needed shrimming along the stone walls. The property is terraced and M. et Mme. like the walls to be clean of weeds and the lawnmower can only get so close as well.
Tumblr media
In addition to olives, there are lots of citrus trees on the property, including lemons, oranges, clementines, grapefruit and probably some limes somewhere too.
Tumblr media
I’m still getting to grips with everything I’m supposed to do. There is definitely a learning curve. I need to start to know the plants in the Mediterranean garden. I have a meeting with Alejandro and Mme. next week for a walkabout.
This is where I am on the unpacking and moving in to my house. I wanted to empty some of my boxes, so eight or nine boxes later, the bookshelves Alek built during lockdown last spring, are full!
Tumblr media
On the bureaucracy side of things, my friend Lucien is helping me a lot. I’ve applied for my titre de séjour, the most important piece of ID in France, my numéro fiscal so I can open a bank account, to deposit my first pay cheque, and will need to ring for a numéro de sécurité social. Once I have my carte de séjour, I can swap my UK driving licence for a French permis de conduire.
Plant of the week
Anacardiaceae Schinus molle L.

These two intricate porcelain works by Alice Couttoupes will be showing in Home@735 Invitational opening on Thursday the 15th. The works are a response to Olive Cotton’s 1985 photograph, Pepperina.
“…drawn to the physicality of working with clay, my practice requires constant experimentation as I test the limits of the material in regards to its translucency, fineness and its varied shades in vitrified form. The final forms are often carefully constructed and controlled sculptural works that resist any contact with the viewer, challenging the formal and instinctive engagement with ceramics…fascinated by the natural – particularly botanical- world, the subject of my work is an exploration of the processes of colonial botany and the consequential enduring socio-political and environmental implications. I am interested in ideas surrounding national memory, history and identity within the Australian context, and how language and symbols work to shape and bond groups within societies…”
Pictured are Pepperina II and Pepperina I, porcelain, steel stand.
