@fictionnet event06 - pride.
So, maybe I didn’t always get things right, about myself, or about others. And maybe a part of learning my place in the world was about accepting that I wouldn’t always have the answers, and I wouldn’t always be the hero in every scenario, and maybe I wouldn’t win everything I attempted. But I was pretty sure about a couple of things.

Of all the terrifying decisions I’d had to make this year, among all the missteps and bad calls and failed attempts—agreeing to help Alexander Brougham was the most perfectly right decision I’d ever made - PERFECT ON PAPER, Sophie Gonzales

Perfect on Paper by Sophie Gonzales
Tumblr media
“I swallowed, and scanned the faces staring up at me. No one looked judgy or irritated, even though it felt like such a stupid, trivial thing to bring up. The fear of passing as straight, for god's sake. "I feel like if I'm with a guy, I won't belong here properly anymore. What if I got a boyfriend? I'd feel weird bringing him to pride events, or even telling queer people I have a boyfriend. I'd feel judged.”
I highly recommend this book if you haven't read it yet.

This book was so cute! Great bisexual representation - I really like how it addressed internalized biphobia and the fear of not being queer enough to belong in queer spaces especially when dating someone of a different gender.

December 2023 Reviews
Finally wrapping up on my 2023 reviews but I’m overwhelmed so I've decided to condense them all into one post;
On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous - Ocean Vuong (★ ★ ★ ★/5); absolutely devastating I had tears in my eyes the entire time
A Touch of Ruin (Persephone x Hades #2) - Scarlett St. Clair (★ ★/5); how can someone write a 400 page book where nothing happens???
Radiant Sin (Dark Olympus #4) - Katee Robert (★ ★/5); lowkey the weakest book yet, it was kind of boring and although I loved Cassandra, the other characters were eh
Cruel Seduction (Dark Olympus #5) - Katee Robert (★ ★ ★/5); enemies to lovers and polyamory? Fuck yeah sign me up
A Touch of Malice (Persephone x Hades #3) - Scarlett St. Clair (★ ★ ★/5); this just in/ the two characters argue in circles about the same thing for the entire book… except at some point there’s a wedding
The Light We Carry - Michelle Obama (★ ★ ★ ★ ★/5); mother!! Genuinely, Michelle Obamas words are so comforting I love this woman
Book Lovers - Emily Henry (★ ★ ★ ★ ★/5); why can’t I find someone like Charlie, all I’m asking for is a man that READS
Caliban’s War (The Expanse #2) - James S. A. Corey (★ ★ ★/5); do I have any idea what’s going on? No. Am I enjoying the ride? Yes. Strap me into the spaceship let’s shoot some bitches & destroy moons!
The Will to Change - bell hooks (★ ★ ★ ★/5); shook up my worldviews and really made me think about my relationship with men and my anger with them
Perfect on Paper - Sofia Gonzales (★ ★ ★ ★/5); actually really cute despite not being the lil wlw story I was envisioning (long live chaotic bisexuals)

Things that I REALLY REALLY want to see more of in bi+ representation:
•characters using labels other than bisexual (pan/omni/poly)
•love interests with a different gender than the bi+ character
•non-binary rep !!! (love interest or character themself)
•characters that are bi+ and ace-spec/aro-spec
•trans bi characters
•let's just say generally non-cis characters because the bi+ label is a fluid one and it would be rly cool to see a reflection of that in the characters' self identity
•relationships where both/all parties are bi+
•not necessarily bi+ related but POLYAMOROUS REP!!
•bi+ people of color & bi+ people with multiple marginalized identities
Feel free to add :)

My friend doesn't like it when female bi characters get with guys because 'whats the point'. In the book I just read, the main character was afraid of people thinking she was less queer because she wanted to date a straight guy. It went through a lot of detail about how that was internalized biphobia and it's derived from social norms and what's "allowed" to be considered queer and I was thinking 'thats a really good point, maybe I only think I can't like guys (that aren't fictional) because if I do I'll no longer be considered queer when that's not true at all'
Anyways idk abt that friend rn, she was pretty adamant that it's not ok for the bi main character to be with the opposite sex... (she's pansexual)
