One thing I will NEVER understand is perfect pitch. How can you listen to a note and tell me that's an A. Impossible. Just no way. And I say this as someone who has played the violin for 17 years (though not very well as you might imagine)

Something about perfect pitch
and why I don't hope that Vessel has it...
@sleepanonymous
Since you brought it up twice I tagged you maybe this is interesting for you?!
Perfect pitch makes me think of Adam Neely (my jazzy music nerd) and also Eddie from TwoSetViolin.
Adam made this video “why you don't want perfect pitch”.He explains the downsides of perfect pitch. I had no idea there were any but there are.
Relative pitch is actually more useful for musicians and more common. I am developing this also just by playing guitar and without even trying and despite my age. I mean I started playing when I was 29. But the progress that I made is amazing. All of that without even trying.
I'm sure that Vessel is a lot better. It's like anything: whenever you do something a lot you become really good at it.
The worst downside of perfect pitch?
You can lose it. You are actually likely to lose it once you reached a certain age and then it can be quite shattering. So that is why I'm hoping that Vessel does not have it. You can't miss something that you never had.
youtube
This video is really good actually. It's 15 minutes long for anyone who is interessted.
This is kind of interessting also.
Brett tries to "train" perfect pitch and Eddy (the one with actual perfect pitch) is kind of suffering.
youtube
I also need to put "The Dooo" in here.
He listens to something once and just plays it. Damn impressive . And he also does not have perfect pitch only relative pitch. But he is used to doing what he does.
I can imagine that Vessel has the same skills like the Dooo?! But really I don't know
And also that guitar. It's the Steve Vai Pia. I love it. I'm not a total nerd btw. Only like 80% or something like that.

I'm curious, cuz I can do it but I've been told not everyone can, and I'm still hesitant to believe I 100% have perfect pitch, so

TIL hyperphantasia is a thing and no, actually most people's imagination don't come in HD 1080p surround sound full audio-visual 5 sensory experience. I always thought imagination was binary, like you either had none at all or the full VR experience. But apparently for most people if you tell them to imagine, idk, "breakfast", they'll just have like a plate of cartoon bacon and eggs and maybe a mug of coffee?? And /no background whatsoever/. Just a blank background. For me it would be like, full VR with HD graphics and surround sound and taste and texture to boot. The clink of heavy porcelain and silverware, the rushing feet of wait staff over carpet, murmured conversations at other tables, the steam of a freshly brewed cup of earl grey rising into your face, clearing your sinuses, the fog in your head from waking up at 7am only being pierced through by the insistent nagging in your stomach, not quite to the point of pain, but hard to ignore, the chilliness of definitely-fake sickeningly-sweet apple cordial rushing down your throat and through your veins as you wait for the tea to cool down, and then, OH JOY! the OMELETTE arrives, rich golden yellow flecked with colourful bits of ham and bell peppers and tomato and onion, like a lump of gold inlaid with so many precious stones, but wonderfully soft and creamy with the occasional delightful watery CRUNCH of veggie bits, and the sausages, skin stretched tight and you break into it with your teeth and the meat inside bursts out, soft and homogenous and salty, and the FRIED PORTOBELLOS, with their rich woody flavour and soft bouncy texture - aaaaaand i went and made myself hungry at 9pm at night and where was I going with this again?
Oh yes. Hyperphantasia. Apparently that's a thing. And I have it. This is like the time when I found out that no, not everyone who learnt grade 1 music has perfect pitch and can identify pitches by ear without reference. I thought it was like colour vision, you can see and differentiate the colours, you just needed someone to teach you their names. Huh. Brains are weird.

I'm gonna make Pitch suffer a little bit.
He has perfect pitch (pun intended) and yes that does sound cool and all, however do you understand how painful it would be to be at, for example, a kids chair preformence? They are definitely not going gave good Pitch and it will be highly irritating if not a little painful.
Pitch probably has a set amount of music that he actually can listen to without suffering.

Okay I havent researched it but I was thinking, when people sing and whistle - assuming they aren't tone deaf - are capable of hearing and generally matching and replicating what they hear pretty well without having to consciously think of the notes or chords or shit, which is probably a similar function that people with perfect pitch that can just kind of know what they are hearing and often play it back
So I do wonder if people with perfect pitch have a far more generalized ability to use that part of the brain for things NOT inherently generated by the body (as iirc there is a part of the brain associated with sound production originating from the body such as buzzing, humming, whistling, and singing).
Just a thought.

Please reblog so this can reach more people! Feel free to add more info in the tags - your musical exposure, what instrument(s) you play, if you can sing in harmony, whether or not you think you have a good memory, whatever you’d like - or don’t, I don’t make the rules. Have a lovely day!
