Slowly making my way through the inbox, here's today's big bunch!

@freedfromthegalactichivemind Snap! It's not beyond the realms of possibility, we shall see what happens with my other ideas for continuing the series.

I can write them down for you! It reads...

Following the events of the finale, life changed for everyone on Etheria.

Scorpia was officially handed her kingdom back. Upon seeing the state of it she yelled "What motherfucking thundercunt did this?!" She is still apologising.

Within a month of Prime's defeat, Perfuma held the biggest Trans Pride parade Etheria had ever seen. Prince Peekable still did not turn up. He was later found dead, but Perfuma insisted that this was not an excuse for failing to support trans people.

Frosta was finally able to return to Hell. The other demons had not changed at all during her absence and were still massive dicks. She has now made this realm her permanent home. It has more cake.

Mermista initially failed to respond to our request for comment on how her life had changed. When we reached out again, she said "It's fine, I guess, whatever." Her smile indicated things were a lot better than 'just fine'.

Sea Hawk celebrated the defeat of Prime with a series of 'victory fires'. The resulting court cases found him guilty of arson and sentenced to a total of five years in prison. Mermista officially pardoned him after a lot of convincing.

After finishing Sweary She-Ra, Entrapta was tasked with writing the SPOP movie. It has been hailed as the greatest movie of all time and received glowing reviews from all critics. It never received a release outside of Etheria.

Hordak finally achieved his dream of taking over Etheria. There is now a branch of Greggs in every town and village on the planet. He and Entrapta created a unique menu of tiny sausage rolls.

Shadow Weaver's remains were returned to Mystacor. The burial site is now a popular gender-neutral bathroom.

Double Trouble opened an acting school. They closed it a week later after realising no-one could be as good they are.

Bow used his spare time to focus on inventing more tech. His inventions have changed the everyday lives of many Etherians. The French horn alarm clock was not one of them.

Glimmer now spends her days collecting antique weapons. Though she has no need to use them, they are maintained in perfect condition... just in case.

Catra went through a fuckton of therapy at Mystacor. Things may not be perfect but she's happy. Also, Castaspella told her several embarrassing stories about Glimmer as a child. Catra has them saved up for when she really needs to piss Glimmer off.

The first thing Adora did after defeating Prime was take a well-earned rest. Well, she slept for a few hours. Well, I say slept, she lay down on the bed for a few minutes. What can I say? Adora is still Adora.

Spop Beauty Pageant AU

So it’s kind of a twist on the pageant trope because I want it to be more inclusive and focus on cis nonconforming beauty standards. So the pageant would feature the entire cast and the different ways they express their beauty and confidence.

Double Trouble is a nonbinary icon. They make anything and everything look good 😎👑🧑‍🎤

Bow is a transmasc gender nonconformist. Dude loves his crop tops, and has no problems wearing flower crowns or donning a skirt when the mood strikes him.☀️🌼🏹

Glimmer is a short, chubby queen. She enjoys frills, pastels, and sparkles 💖 She, also, prefers to wear boots with everything and short hair; a sort of Rebel in Pink kind of style. 🦹‍♀️ 💅

Adora’s got a strong athletic style that leans towards gender neutral. However, it’d be fun to explore her softer feminine side with formal wear.👟🎀⚔️

Catra has this Punk Rock meets Femme Fatale vibe that’s super attractive 🎸🗡️ and yet she’d never be caught dead in a dress ☠️. A plaid skirt with ripped leggings underneath is the closest she’s likely to get. 😼

While Scorpia is a gorgeous wall of muscle she has a strong feminine style 👠💋. Additionally, in modern AUs, she is often times depicted with a prosthetic arm or two 🦾

Mermista and Perfuma have a pretty self explanatory aesthetic. However, Mermista’s character is meant to explore a non-western culture, while Perfuma herself could be read as a trans feminine woman. 🔱🥻💐💚

I’d love to explore Frosta. She also comes from a non-western cultural background with an elemental aesthetic but her style isn’t fully fleshed out either. One could lean towards multiple directions. I’d like to play around with her hair maybe add multicolored streaks, possibly an undercut. 🌨️❄️⛄️

Then there’s Sea Hawk who while very masculine in appearance is also very bisexual and body positive with his flamboyant over the top appearance. 🔥🏴‍☠️⚓️

I could see older characters like Angella, Light Hope, Spinnerella and Netossa, even Hordak acting as the judges. 🪽⚛️ 🌪️🌐💃

I’d probably add Entrapta as a stylist since she has no interest in competition. The spacesuits she took the time to design, along with Hordak’s armor, demonstrates how admirable her skills for fashion are. 👩‍💻 🪡🧵

Shadow Weaver could be a scorned and bitter pageant Queen trying to relive her glory days through one of kids (probably Adora). 🤡😒

Casta and Micah could be the cohost. I could see Micha dressing in drag for some his appearances too. 🧔‍♀️🔮🎤

im tme and im just gonna preface this before this ask, its nothing bad and its not a criticism, more of an observation! i mean none of this critically and moreso am looking for an opinion

do you think theres a reason for why a lot of media recently is going for transfem characters when they have their trans characters? tokenism usually, but generally i find when theres a trans character in a piece of media shes typically transfem. and occasionally nonbinary for the extra Blizzard Diversity Points in the eyes of Cishet People lol.

i can name plenty of trans women characters - Kiku from One Piece (though one piece also has Yamato, a trans man), Natalie in Big Mouth, Bridget in Guilty Gear (though this is a correction of the past), Unique in Glee, Denise in Twin Peaks, Lily in Zombieland, Alluka in HxH, Vivian in TTYD (though she has a tricky history due to localization cowards), Perfuma in She-ra (after production iirc), Talia in League and Gwen Stacy (heavy coding. like trans flag colors coding.)

Though I don’t know as many trans men - Yamato in One Piece, Sheldon in Glee, Barney from Paranormal Dead End Park or whatever that shows called, Bow in She-Ra, Viktor in Umbrella Academy (though due to the actor’s irl transition), and Alice Yabusame from YTTD. Obviously im missing plenty just as i am with trans women, but i think its interesting i can still name so few transmasc characters as a trans man myself

im not saying this as a bad thing, especially not as “trans women get more rep than trans men!!” because its just… weird to proclaim. especially with the history trans women have in media - for every well written, lovely portrayal of a trans women, theres a million caricatures behind her.

because most of these studios arent stocked with trans people making content for trans people, not like Maddie in Celeste, i just was curious why theres so many trans women characters. because of how radical the existence of trans women is, and how much more political transfem identities are made due to transmisogyny, is a good portrayal of a trans women deemed more diverse? Does this history of transfem characters make devs and writers think “if we do it right, we’ll win the trans crowd!”?

again, NONE of this is criticism. im so happy for trans girls who see themselves in bridget, gwen, talia, or anyone else i mentioned and anyone else i forgot. im so glad they finally get to have characters that arent vile portrayals of men in dresses or the archetypal “ambiguous twinky anime boy pretending to be a girl”. but im just interested in why its always trans women? do you think devs see it that way?

I mean realistically it's probably just because until fairly recently the average person didn't even know what a trans man even is

She-Ra World War I au, because I have played too much Battlefield 1

Catra, Entrapta, Scorpia, Kyle, Rogelio and Lonnie all crew a Mark V tank named Darla. Entrapta is constantly making improvements and repairs, as expected, so it’s not even comparable to a real Mark V anymore. Catra is the commander, Entrapta is the driver, Scorpia crews one sponson by herself because there’s no space for anyone else on that side (these things are very small inside), and the Horde Trio are on the other sponson.

Everyone carries custom guns made by Entrapta. Scorpia gets a carbine version of the Mars Automatic, chambered in .455 Webley Auto and with a stock. Catra has a C96 in 9x25mm Mauser Export with a stock and a snail mag. Kyle has an obrez, which are infamous for their high recoil and overall crappiness. Rogelio has a C93 with a stock and extended magazine, and Lonnie has a regular Luger P08 Artillery variant.

People keep asking about the guns, and Catra is so fed up with it that whenever someone asks, she shoots their helmet off with unerring precision

Scorpia is just as big and strong as she is in canon. She was introduced to the rest of the crew while carrying a 60lb Maxim gun with no effort. Entrapta made the Mars carbine as a gift for the Christmas Truce in 1914 because nothing else would fit in her hands.

Entrapta has a gas mask instead of a welding mask.

One of the carrier pigeons is named Emily, and she follows Entrapta everywhere, no matter how implausible it is for a pigeon to get there.

Entrapta constantly passes out while working on Darla because Mark Vs are notorious for their bad ventilation, and the fumes from the engine would gather in the cabin. Entrapta has been meaning to put in a better ventilation system, but she never gets around to it. Everyone else lets this happen because they assume the gas mask can filter out carbon monoxide. It can’t.

Hordak has to order nightly inspections of the tank to make sure Entrapta doesn’t die after passing out and being left with fumes for hours because no one checked on her

Entrapta later switches to a splatter mask because it offers better eye protection, and she didn’t really need a gas mask

The rebellion characters are mostly in an infantry squad together

Adora is still kind of she ra, because when they go into battle she puts on this

Bow and Perfuma are trans in this au

Bow only joined the army because Glimmer did, and when the physical examiner found out he was trans, Glimmer threatened him into giving Bow a clean bill of health

The unit is all women (except for Bow), in a similar concept to the Harlem Hellfighters

Perfuma joined as a conscientious objector, but every time they fight, she steals Frosta’s rifle and fights with it because Frosta is only 14 and Perfuma cannot restrain herself

Their unit is nicknamed the Princess Alliance. It’s meant to be derogatory, but they use it as a badge of honor

They have a rivalry with the Horde tank crew, to the point they are at war with each other as much as the enemy

Scorpia once threw an entire Maxim gun at Adora because she didn’t recognize her with the armor on, and she was unconscious for a full day

Adora later replaces her armor with something Entrapta made for her as a peace offering between their units, which is lighter and less bulky but more bulletproof because it’s made of better metal, and replaces her MG 08/15 with a Huot Automatic Rifle

I have more about this au, I will post it when I figure it out

Unfriendly reminder that Russia has committed warcrimes in Ukraine. They’re probably not going to be prosecuted for it because they’re a big country, and warcrimes are only ever prosecuted as a powertrip for the people who won the war. But just to keep a record, Russia has committed at least two separate offenses multiple times by my count:

Violating Sections 2(b)i, 2(b)ii, 2(b)iv, and 2(b)v of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court: Deliberately attacking civilians and civilian targets by bombarding cities with no plausible military target nearby, so they can’t just say they missed a military target and hit civilians by accident

Violating Section 2(b)ix of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court: Attacking hospitals and medical personnel, again by bombardment with no plausible military target nearby

And a third possible one the Russian military hasn’t done yet:

Using thermobaric weapons. I’m not sure if that is a warcrime, but it could be argued as one, due to the unusual method of killing falling under Section 2(b)xx (Employing weapons, projectiles and material and methods of warfare which are of a nature to cause superfluous injury or unnecessary suffering). They have prepared them and are ready to use them as of Feb 26th 2022. Please spread this around so we can put public pressure on the US and International Criminal Court to prosecute the Russian military leaders and possibly Putin as well. My #1 post of 2022

I wonder how many times Razz has lived through the events of the show. When she meets Mara in Hero, she doesn't recognize that's the first time until Mara says she doesn't know her. She's been there and everywhere else so many times that she can't even remember which is which. And she always knows just what to say and just what to show Adora. How many times has she gone through it all? Watched everything fall apart and come back together again? Do you think she ever feels guilty for not having done better? Do you think she misses it, now the magic is there and she doesn't jump around? Was she even know which scene was the right one? Or which path she took to here? What does that do to her?

Inspired by Lunar Gang by may12324 on Deviantart who did the same for the Lunar Chronicles.

She-Ra’s bisexual rep is damn good and this is why

EXHIBIT A: BOW -- his relationship with Glimmer, his short try with Perfuma, and his crushing on Sea Hawk, literally from the moment they met. I guess you can count his interaction with Kyle, too, but I personally found that to be more platonic even if I think their dynamic is interesting.

“Your name is Sea Hawk!? That’s the coolest name I’ve ever heard!” (Cue Mermista letting out her longest uuuuggggghhhhh ever on her throne in Salineas)

I totally get it, Bow. This man’s stupid shiny mustache, titty window and massive ego also makes me lose all of my brain cells.

“Sea Hawk is impressed with my knots!”

He went to Princess Prom with Perfuma!

They were so domestic in the portal that I’m not convinced that Glimbow weren’t dating in their “perfect” reality.

I guess we can count this, too, but I think Bow was just using his masculine charm and sick biceps to distract Kyle from what’s going on behind him. Poor guy.

This got super duper long because the rep is so vast, so I’m going to put the rest under a cut. I’m only going to use the canon bi characters, so this includes Mermista, Sea Hawk, Glimmer, Bow, Micah, Angella, Entrapta and an honorable mention of Perfuma who explored dating a guy but is canonically a lesbian. Apparently there’s no confirmation for this other than ND liking someone’s tweet saying perfuma is a trans lesbian. So her sexuality is up to audience interpretation.

EXHIBIT B: QUEEN GLIMMAH -- her relationship with Bow and her chemistry with Catra. (If there is more I’m sorry, Glimmer is one of my favorite characters but she has so much going on that I can’t remember any other moments with romantic tension towards other characters.) One could argue she had moments with Adora, as well, but I saw them as more platonic.

But dear God, this poor girl cannot win. People who don’t ship Glimbow seem to insist she’s a lesbian, or that Glimbow is a het ship. They definitely get the brunt of this bullshit and I’m sick of seeing it.

First of all, she’s a walking pastel bi-pride flag.

Like this girl nearly had a meltdown over her crush going to Princess Prom with someone else, she clearly loves him.

Get you a girl who will personally kick the shit out of your kidnappers.

Glimmer’s fantasy version of Catra. There is no heterosexual explanation for this.

EXHIBIT C: SEA HAWK, his relationship with Mermista and his seven evil exes that they fought together. Canonically I think Bow’s crush on Sea Hawk is one-sided, but if Mermista wasn’t in the picture (or, you know, if they wanted to explore a poly relationship) I think they could have had something.

Bow has been fawning over him all day and he still only has eyes for Mermista.

The bi-rate urge to belt out songs about your blushing beloved in public

I actually love that his fantasy version of Mermista is just her, but slightly more anime. This man wouldn’t change a damn thing about his beloved, but he might be a big fucking weeb.

She’s too hot, he’s not getting anything done today

There is no heterosexual explanation for this.

ND has confirmed this is Sea Hawk’s ex in a tweet (all of the s4 wrong answers became s5 canon), but....

I think they’re all his exes.

Honorable mentions:

An attempt at flirting with a lesbian.

DT calling him Hot Stuff, bc yeah, the many ideas this gave me. But come on, read the room, DT. This poor man is traumatized, his fish wife is mind controlled and trying to kill him for real this time.

DT is another enigma, like Perfuma. I can see them flirting with both masc and fem characters, so they might be bi or pan, but it’s really up to audience interpretation.

EXHIBIT D: MERMISTA, her relationship with Sea Hawk, her massive crush on Adora, her flirting with Perfuma, and her inability to function around hot people.

Adora transforms into a hot, buff warrior princess right in front of her eyes. “That’s.... different...”

Mermista masks a lot of her emotions, just like I do, so I imagine this is going through her head in this scene: “Oh great, these two incredibly hot women are are in my space right now, time to die i guess”

“You see what I have to deal with?” That blush tho. “He’s just my ride” my ass, you aren’t fooling anyone, dearest. You have a fleet of ships, probably a whole ass navy at your disposal. Failing that, you’re a literal mermaid who could have swam there if needed.

Look at how they’re standing -- she grabbed his arm first.

Some not-so-subtle flirting with Perfuma. I love to imagine they dated when they were like, younger teens.

Get you a girl who will help you fight your seven evil exes.

As much as Mermista tries to hide her feelings, everyone knew this was the only way to break the mind control. Only someone she loved could get her to feel so strongly that it would override it (even if that feeling is annoyance, and if you’ve never intentionally and playfully annoyed your partner, you’re stronger than I am).

EXHIBIT E: ENTRAPTA

To be fair, I don’t really see any references in the show to her being attracted to anyone other than Hordak and tech, but according to the SPOP Wiki, ND confirmed she is bisexual, and this first bulletpoint also touches on her attraction in the show as well:

The wikipedia isn’t 100% reliable but it’s a good place to start, I did go out of my way to pull confirmation tweets and stuff where I could find them. But being fanmade, the wiki isn’t always a great source of information.

EXHIBIT F: MICAH AND ANGELLA

Another walking pastel bi-pride flag.

To be fair, again: these two are only confirmed bisexual under the blanket statement that all of ND’s characters are queer. They still count, though, in my heart. We stan a short bi king and his tall bi wife. (I only teared up a little bit getting this screenshot)

Honorable mention: Perfuma, who, for all intents and purposes, I thought was bisexual until I read her wiki. Because this is how she’s presented in canon.

God, I ship these two so hard though. I love when the grumpy one is soft for the sunshine one ;~;

Scorfuma is pretty fucking cute too, though. I just think that it’s neat to also include someone experimenting with their preferences, too, if that was the intention behind her relationships in the show.

Perfuma is widely regarded by the fandom to be sapphic, but just because she ended up with a woman doesn’t mean she couldn’t be bisexual. I think it could go wither way -- she could have been experimenting with her preferences and then determined she only wants to date women, or she could just be a bisexual person in a same-sex relationship.

I don’t want to pretend to be an expert on any of this, just a real bisexual person who sees herself in these characters and hates to see that all erased by fans of the show who insist they’re straight or heterosexual couples just because they’re opposite sex. Or, again, that because Perfuma ended up in a wlw relationship she is exclusively sapphic. Bisexual people are still bisexual no matter what the gender of the person they’re partnered up with is.

Honestly, massive respect to you for the amount of thought you put into working how to integrate the sexuality stuff. Tbh BEING an aro/ace person it's hard to work out what's going on ever. Even despite having the language for it, I literally had to figure it out by talking to my friends and realizing the way I felt about other people was WAY different from how THEY felt about other people, in that There Were Different Types of Feelings. It's an experience that feels really hard to communicate without having it be a Whole Thing, and I'd imagine it gets harder in a world where sexuality differences don't really MATTER to anyone (which is great and how it should be). I really appreciate the transparency about you wanting to put it in but wanting to make it organic and not uncomfortable- it feels almost refreshing and I have faith in whatever happens

Nobody thinks their own experience is abnormal until told otherwise by someone whose experience is different. In my experience, unless you're in a context that's actively conflicting with innate parts of you, you're probably not gonna be super aware of those parts.

I had a conversation about this with a friend of mine in college. I mentioned feeling kind of weird about the concept of gender, because I genuinely didn't think about it most of the time. I'd try to see if I felt like A Woman and there wouldn't be anything there. It was frankly hard for me to understand why anyone would feel so strongly about their gender - but I knew some people did, because some people felt strongly enough about it to transition.

She told me she used to feel acutely aware of that all the time, but since transitioning she'd started to feel the same way I did - not thinking about it. She didn't feel Extremely Womanly, she just felt… fine. Now that she'd reached a point where she wasn't being constantly reminded that Something Is Different About You, she wasn't acutely aware of the parts of herself that weren't fitting.

In my experience, "coming out" is a side effect of an environment that tacitly assumes certain things are universal. Someone in that environment who doesn't 100% fit that "universal" model becomes acutely aware of the parts of themself that aren't part of that model, and if they want anyone to understand that about them, they need to actively, awkwardly tell them. In a context where that isn't true, "coming out" stops making sense as a concept.

This kind of thing happened in She-Ra, where the writers created a world where gender and orientation were completely un-noteworthy. Nobody is surprised that Bow has two dads, nobody is weirded out that Angella is ruling alone without a king or that most of the warriors and guards are women, nobody thinks it's weird that Double Trouble uses "they" pronouns, nobody ever brings up that Perfuma is trans. None of these things are noteworthy, so they aren't noted. And that means the characters have to demonstrate their orientations and identities by action and context clues only. (And that means Perfuma's identity is never canonically established, because there seems to have been no organic way to bring it up in-story.)

Creating a world where a diverse range of experiences are understood as "normal" makes it a lot harder to draw direct attention to those experiences, but I strongly believe it's a better way to handle it. The alternative is like those 90's-style Girl Power narratives where the heroine would go all "oh, you think just because I'm a woman I can't kick ass!" to constantly draw attention to how weird it was that she was a woman and also kicking ass. The writers could have instead let her kick ass without acting like it was scandalously daring and tacitly implying that women being able to kick ass was incredibly unusual while dudes doing the same was completely un-noteworthy. By explicitly stating that this experience is notable it reinforces the idea that it's not normal, not expected or not broadly understood. In a real-world or real-world-adjacent setting this can work without much trouble because it's probably fairly close to our current society and we can assume a similar understanding of gender and orientation (Benson casually coming out in Kipo makes sense since the setting is near-future post-apocalyptic), but in a fantasy story it often doesn't fit at all.

It's fundamentally just another form of show-don't-tell. It's always best to show us who the character is and how they work and think. If telling works, feel free to tell too - but telling doesn't always make sense in-narrative.
