Propaganda
Humphrey Bogart (Casablanca, Key Largo, Sabrina)—John Huston speaking at Bogart's funeral: "Himself, he never took his work too seriously. He regarded the somewhat gaudy figure of Bogart, the star, with an amused cynicism; Bogart, the actor, he held in deep respect … In each of the fountains at Versailles there is a pike which keeps all the carp active; otherwise they would grow over-fat and die. Bogie took rare delight in performing a similar duty in the fountains of Hollywood. Yet his victims seldom bore him any malice, and when they did, not for long. His shafts were fashioned only to stick into the outer layer of complacency, and not to penetrate through to the regions of the spirit where real injuries are done … He is quite irreplaceable. There will never be another like him."
Buster Keaton (The General, The Navigator, Sherlock Jr.)—For me Buster’s hotness comes not just from his physical beauty but in the constant surprise and contradictions of the man, he’s simultaneously delicate/rough, feminine/masculine, confident/vulnerable, 5foot5 pretty face with an unexpectedly deep voice, at first glance you think oh he’s a cute little thing and then he takes his top off and it’s Superman abs underneath. He was intensely shy in social situations but had no hesitation in jumping off the top of a building. He famously never smiled on screen* but he exudes warmth and joy and laughter. He created some of the most beautiful, intelligent movies ever made but refused to acknowledge his own genius and talent as an artist, instead maintaining that all he wanted to do was make people laugh. If he was here in reality competing in this poll he would give it 100% but he would not be at all bothered if he didn’t win. And that’s why he’s the hottest vintage man. A vote for Buster is a vote for all that is good and decent in the world 💕 (*he did smile on camera occasionally despite his own assertions to the contrary 😄)
This is round 3 of the bracket. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage man.
[enormous amounts of additional propaganda submitted under the cut]
Humphrey Bogart propaganda:
Bogart on why he became an actor: "I was born to be indolent and this was the softest of rackets."

Bogart about his wife Methot [who later divorced him]: "I like a jealous wife ... I wouldn't give you two cents for a dame without a temper."
Tumblr media
Bogart, on why he was one of the only cast members filming African Queen to avoid catching dysentery: "All I ate was baked beans, canned asparagus and Scotch Whiskey. Whenever a fly bit me, it dropped dead."
Bogart's advice to a recently-nominated friend on how to write an acceptance speech for an oscar: "Just say you did it all yourself and don't thank anyone."

A/N : For the story of Lewis Hamilton, I drew inspiration from the romantic relationship between Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall that blossomed when they worked together for the first time. I wanted to portray it in the world of F1. Additionally, Lewis Hamilton has been a staunch supporter of female racers for many years, making him a fitting figure to play a significant role in supporting Reader to become an F1 driver. I hope you'll enjoy it.

Y/N's first F1 race marks the first official competition between her and Lewis Hamilton. Despite their strong mentor-student bond, within the competitiveness world of Formula 1, where there is no room for friendship, one would wonder if the intense competition will forever change their relationship, or if it had been altered long ago?

It's worth keeping an eye on this year's Japanese Grand Prix, as it is the first encounter between Hamilton and Y/N as Formula 1 competitors competing against each other on the track. Their relationship adds an intriguing layer to this race, making it more than just about the race results. Nonetheless, this is an important milestone for Formula One and will undoubtedly be a memorable part of its history, regardless of the race's outcome.

An historic moment unfolded at the Japanese Grand Prix as a thrilling battle ensued between Y/N and Lewis Hamilton for the third position. They fiercely contested each other, with Y/N emerging victorious in the final seconds, clinching P3. It marked her first podium finish in F1, while Hamilton settled for P4, missing out on a podium opportunity. Despite this, he displayed no signs of disappointment, and instead, he congratulated Y/N on her remarkable skills, acknowledging her as the brightest rising star in the current motorsport scene.
"She's made me feel like I'm looking at myself in the past," Hamilton said. "Y/N's skills are absolutely impressive, without a doubt. She's proven that she's a perfect fit for F1 racing. I couldn't be prouder of her.”

personal style inspired by film noir
Film noir is mostly known for it’s two achetypes — femme fatale, and to a lesser degree, the girl next door. Inspired in 40’s and 50’s, it’s style is made of sharp lines, silky and form-fitting pieces. Alluring, mysterious and always moving with elegance and determination, everyone knows of the femme fatale. I picture a beautiful girl wrapped in long coat, dark sunglasses and stiletto heels, and a sillage of lovely perfume worn on her wrist like a sparkly bracelet.
The silhouette is cut by two horizontal lines, enhancing the waist and the shoulders. It’s usually done by high waisted pants/skirts, and dresses that are tied, wrapped, cinched or cut at the waist. The neckline is either in a sleeveless sweetheart type of style to show off the shoulders, or in a closed/v shape necklines with padded shoulders, creating that sharp line across them. Also seen in more casual type of outfits are long flowy wide-leg pants, or suits. They can also be made out of softer materials to give a sultry touch to the look, rather than androgynous one. This style is more monochromatic and minimalistic in it's colours, patters and layers, but it's always feminine and luxurious, accessorized with elegant details. Some of the go-to pieces are – silk or sheer blouses, balloon sleeves, peep-toe heels, velvet pieces, furr, structured/trench coats, diamond jewelry, long form-fitted/slit dresses, high-wasted pants and suits, sheer hosiery, dark sunglasses, hats/veils, gloves. Actresses to find inspiration from – Gene Tierney, Lauren Bacall, Ava Gardner, Veronica Lake, Rita Hayworth, Barbara Stanwyck

colours – since it was filmed in black and white, the colours had to be bold and with a lot of contrast. deep colours, mostly different shades of black, white, red, green
hairstyle – side parted, lots of volume, with sleek continuous waves framing the face, today known as the hollywood waves
makeup – defined sharp brows, long lashes with minimal eye makeup, lined lips and red lipstick

Namor x Mexican actress reader: when the camera stops
Plot: It’s the 1940’s and you are an up and coming actress in old Hollywood filming a movie in Mexico until you catch the attention of a certain fish creature and his other consorts.
Tumblr media
As you and the film crew were packing up for the night, you decide to head to hotel with your husband hand in hand.
“Mi vida, are you alright?” Your husband asks you as he notices how light-headed you are.
“Oh yes, it’s just a little migraine.” You groaned as you put a free hand in your head. For some strange reason, you kept hearing a weird song all day and it left you in a daze as well. You just decided to ignore it and also keep a close distance to your costume and set designer husband because the two of you have made a vow that by the year 1954 rolled around, the both of you would get a dual citizenship to America and move to New York or LA and try to do American movies or be on broadway. You always loved actresses like Judy garland, Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman, Gene Tierney, Natalie wood, and your personal favorite, María Felix who you hope to be like some day.
*time skip*
“Y/N.” The call whispered.
“What?” You whispered back as you were all groggy. You then decided to brush your H/L H/C as you got up, left your hotel room, and went outside. As you went outside, you looked at the ocean and saw some blue creatures singing a song that was meant for you as you had nothing but a blank expression.
As you kept walking while ignoring your husband’s calls for help, you suddenly saw a blue lady with a feathered headdress and a blue man wearing a shark head. As you saw the two of them, the blue lady took your hand, caressed your cheek, and signaled the shark head man to take his mask off and when he did, he attached it to your face, and he shushed you gently.
“Shhhh, sleep now butterfly, don’t fight it.” The shark head man crooned in an unknown language that you didn’t know.
“I-,” you muffled until the blue lady in the feathered headdress rubbed your head.
“Sleep now, forget all your troubles and drift off.” She also crooned back in the same language as it clearly worked and you were knocked out.
*time skip*
As you woke up, you now realize that you were in a cave sleeping in a hammock.
“Hello my dear, did you have a good night’s rest?” The blue servant asked in the same foreign language as she came in with clothes that didn’t look like yours.
“Why am I here?” You asked as you wanted to know what was going on.
“Our lord Ku’kul’kan wishes to speak with you.” The lady bowed as she set the clothes down.
“Are you joking?” You ask in shock because you thought the feathered serpent god was fake.
“No, he wants to speak with you now.” The lady said once again.
*time skip*
As you arrived dressed in the clothes that were delivered to you, you arrive in a throne room that had a human man with pointy ears, a gold giant necklace, green shorts, and boots that have wings in the back.
“Come here my turtle dove, don’t be shy.” The pointy ear man said as he smiled at you.
“W-who are you? Why am I here?” You stuttered as your hand started to shake as you sat down.
“I am known as Ku’kul’kan but you may call me Namor.” The man said as he bowed in respect.
“The feathered serpent god.” You muttered as you looked around the place.
“You are a gem.” Namor smiled as he kissed your hand.
“Namor, can you please tell me on why I’m here? What is this place?” You demanded as you glared at him.
“Y/N this place is called Talocan, and we live here in secret so the surface world doesn’t know about us. Namor said as he took a strand of your H/C H/L hair and played with it.
“The real reason I brought you here is because me, Attuma, and my cousin Namora saw you with a group of people on the surface with strange devices. What were you doing?” He asked in curiosity as he tilted his head to the side.
“Well…, Uh…, I am what they call me an actress. I star in movies and pretend to be characters.” You said confidently.
“That is so interesting.” Namor smiled back as he suddenly took your hand and lead you in a waltz.
“How do you know how to do dance?” You gasped as he then spun you while ending in a dip pose.
“Growing up, I always watched people on the surface dance and I always analyzed their movements.” Namor smiled once again as he released you.
“Namor, can I please go back up to the surface? My husband is probably worried about me and I have to get back to filming my fourth movie in a few days.” You asked Namor hoping he would listen.
“Very well my turtle dove, your wish is my command.” Namor smiled as he then bowed in respect while he signaled for Attuma and Namora to take you back to land.
*time skip*
As you finished wrapping up filming, you couldn’t help but play with the strange bracelet that he had secretly slipped onto you before you were taken back to the surface world. As you decided to get ready for the cast and crew dinner party, you then looked back at the ocean from your window remembering the handsome and charming fish man.

I don’t know why, but losing an hour with Daylight Savings is hitting me hard; my eyelids feel glued shut. ONWARD.
On Patreon: Someone was outside my house and was apparently watching my mom take the dog out and knocked on my front door at 3 am. This is true. I have no idea what the fuck or why. (I actually do not think they were there to watch us.) We are looking into the whole Ring/Nest camera thing.
This is why I said Tree Removal Guy did not know what he was getting into. Somebody in our damn hedges at the witching hour knocking softly (so it wasn’t a walrus) on the front door--yeah, I’m freaked out, but at a certain point, where I live is Just Like That.

I chipped in on some reblog propaganda here and there (I tried, Edwige), but I really went in for Ingrid Bergman, to whom I have a slight and questionable resemblance. She tears it up in Gaslight--here is the scene where she turns the tables on her gaslighting (origin of the word!) husband.

Hollywood Moments
By Murray Garrett
With an introductory note by Debbie Reynolds
Abrams, New York 2002, 178 pages, 24x30,5cm, 145 duotone photographa, ISBN 978-0810932425
euro 80,00
A follow-up to Hollywood Candid showcases 145 images of stars taken during intimate or irreverent moments, in a volume containing many never-before-seen photos and complemented by personal reminiscences.
he pathos of Old Hollywood emerges in this dazzling collection of black-and-white photos from the 40s, 50s and 60s. Celebrity photojournalist Garrett captured his subjects at nightclubs, industry soirées and parties-an in-between world where stars tried to enjoy their private lives while still very much on public display. Garrett maintained a studied reserve toward the celebrities (he made a point of never addressing them by their first names) and his photos have a appealing mixture of intimacy and detachment as the celebrities drink, laugh and carouse while tricked out in formal wear and immaculate hair-dos. He is especially fascinated with Hollywood divas like Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Leslie Caron and Ava Gardner; his photos show the warmth of these vibrant personalities while hinting at the strain they suffered in maintaining their glamorous facades. The photos are accompanied by piquant reminiscences: of the wise-cracking Zsa-zsa Gabor shoving her way into every picture frame, the lovable Jimmy Durante shoving his way into oncoming traffic, and the thuggish Milton Berle shoving hapless underlings out of his dressing room. In one tense picture worth a thousand words, a vampy Lauren Bacall embraces Van Heflin while her husband, Humphrey Bogart, looks on ("I heard Bogey say, in a chilled tone, 'Van, that's close enough'"). In these lively, unlacquered but sympathetic portraits, celebrities emerge as flawed, human and never entirely free of self-consciousness.

Today's Black History Month illustration is of Paul R. Williams, the first Black member of the American Institute of Architects.
Tumblr media
Paul Revere Williams was born in Los Angeles in 1894 and was orphaned at four years old. Immediately after high school, he landed internships and jobs at local architecture firms despite the racial prejudice. Williams took classes at the Los Angeles Beaux-Arts School and then attended USC’s School of Engineering. He became a certified architect in 1915.
Tumblr media
In 1920, Williiams was appointed to the first Los Angeles City Planning Commission, and the year after, he received a license to practice architecture in California and started working for John C. Austin. In 1922, he opened his own firm and served as an architect for the Navy during WWII. In 1923, Williams became the first Black person inducted into the American Institute of Architects.
He was an outstanding draftsman, and had the skill of rendering drawings upside down. He developed the skill so that his white clients (who might have been uncomfortable sitting next to a black architect) could see his drawings right side up across the table from him.
Tumblr media
Williams designed over 2,000 homes, including the homes of Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz, Frank Sinatra, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.
Tumblr media
Along with designing homes for the wealthy and the stars, he designed affordable homes, public housing, civic, commercial and institutional buildings. Williams was also part of the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) planning and design team.
Tumblr media
Some of his works include the Golden State Mutual Life building in LA, St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, and the Los Angeles Superior Court.
Tumblr media
He spearheaded the redesign of the Beverly Hills Hotel, a renovation which cost $3 million. The cursive letters on its sign are based on his own handwriting. Outside of LA, he remodeled buildings and spaces for Howard University (dentistry school, architecture and engineering college.)
Tumblr media
He received many awards including the NAACP Spingarn Medal and USC’s Distinguished Alumni Award. In 1957, he became the first African American to become an AIA Fellow. In 2017, Williams was posthumously awarded the AIA Gold Medal, America’s highest honor for an architect. He was the first Black architect to receive the Gold Medal.
Tumblr media
Williams passed away in 1980 at 85, leaving a mark on West Coast architecture and aspiring Black architects.

I’ll be back tomorrow with another illustration and story!

For the ask meme: Emet-Selch
The love meme: put something in my inbox (an activity, a fictional character, a food, a time of day, anything you can think of) and i’ll tell you something i love about it
MASSIVE SHADOWBRINGERS FFXIV SPOILERS AHEAD BEEPBOOP WEEWOO okay:
Aaalrighty, for those of you who don't know, this is Emet-Selch:
Tumblr media
He's one of the main baddies for the Shadowbringers expansion.
To sum up: There was once a wonderful world where Ascians lived in peace, experimenting with creation magic and being philosophical, and then tragedy struck and that planet was sundered into fourteen reflections of itself.
When that happened, everybody with the exception of three Ascians (Emet-Selch being one of them) was also sundered into fourteen reflections, including you. What Ascians want to do is combine the reflection planets into one big planet again, so they can have their home back.
Unfortunately, in order to do this, Ascians have to induce a rejoining on each of the reflection planets, which not only destroys that planet but also creates a calamity event on the Source planet, (which is where you're from) and since there's people (sundered people, but people) living on all of these planets, it's not exactly great for them, but the Ascians have decided they don't care: you have to crack a few eggs to make a utopia, after all.
Emet-Selch has been trying to do this for a good few eons now, and he's a little bit tired. Right now, he'd rather see what you'll do next. Maybe there's a way that his goals and your goals can coincide.
Also remember when I mentioned up there that you got sundered? It turns out the unsundered version of you is someone he knew and deeply misses. His way of dealing with this is to follow you around on your quests, being profoundly unhelpful and making snarky remarks and wistfully wishing that you'd remember your unsundered existence, because he sure does.
Incidentally, that's also what the fic series I've been working on is about: he's trying to make you remember, and it's actually sort of working.
So, all caught up? GOOD, now:
What do I like so much about Emet-Selch. There's lots of things, he's amazing fun to write! But if I were to pick one, it's that he's a bitter old drama queen who loves theater. The devs even threw in a Lauren Bacall quote for him, which implies that he sits around in his pajamas watching old black-and-white movies when he's not trying to bring about the end of several worlds.
His personality is very Theater-y, fluctuating between glorious, gleeful biting sarcasm, childish displays of prickly peevishness, and occasional moments of soppy fondness. He emotes and gestures and postures all over the place like he's performing something. This is a man who is incapable of being embarrassed. He simply does not care. He has done everything, he has seen everything, he is bitter as 90% cacao chocolate about it, and now he's going to monologue to you about your old life that you don't remember because he's feeling maudlin.
People tend to compare him to Cruella Deville a lot, because they have a similar shamelessly evil, vain, selfish energy, and also they look alike, what with the hair and the big coat and flamboyant mannerisms:
Tumblr media
But what fandom might not know is that Cruella Deville was a caricature of my favorite silver screen era hollywood trainwreck: TALLULAH BANKHEAD! :D
Tumblr media
There is a beautiful correlation between Emet-Selch's justification of his actions later in the game and Tallulah declaring "DON'T THINK THIS HAS TAUGHT ME A LESSON!!!" as she strolled out of the hospital after receiving an emergency hysterectomy due to gonorrhea.
Anywho, this post got long didn't it? X)

Raquel Welch, who has died aged 82, had only three lines as Loana in the 1966 film fantasy One Million Years BC but attained sex-symbol status from the role, in which she was dressed in a fur-lined bikini. The image made its imprint in popular culture and the publicity poster sold millions. The feminist critic Camille Paglia described the American actor’s depiction as “a lioness – fierce, passionate and dangerously physical”.
The tale of cavepeople coexisting with dinosaurs was Welch’s breakthrough film – and the beginning of a largely unsuccessful battle she waged to be taken seriously as an actor. When she arrived on set, she told the director, Don Chaffey, she had been thinking about her scene. She recalled his response as: “Thinking? What do you mean you’ve been thinking? Just run from this rock to that rock – that’s all we need from you.”
Ursula Andress, who had emerged from the sea in another famous bikini for the 1962 James Bond film Dr No, had turned down the role of Loana. It went to Welch, on contract to 20th Century Fox, when the American studio agreed to hire her out to the British company Hammer Films.
Welch had to contend with critics who believed her looks to count for more than any acting ability she possessed. It was true that the film was pure kitsch and noteworthy only for Ray Harryhausen’s remarkable special effects with stop-motion animation creatures – and for making Welch a star.
Nevertheless, Welch later showed her aptitude for comedy when she played Constance, the French queen’s married seamstress in love with Michael York’s D’Artagnan, in the 1973 swashbuckler The Three Musketeers, directed by Richard Lester. The performance won her a Golden Globe best actress award and she reprised the part in The Four Musketeers: Milady’s Revenge (1974).
She increasingly took roles on television and worked up an act as a nightclub singer that she took across the US. She showed her performing mettle when she made her Broadway stage debut, taking over from Lauren Bacall in the musical Woman of the Year at the Palace theatre (1981-83). In an updating of the Katharine Hepburn-Spencer Tracy 1942 movie of the same title, she gave a show-stopping performance as the TV news personality Tess Harding.
“When she makes her first appearance in a low-cut gold lamé gown, her attributes can be seen all the way to the mezzanine,” wrote the New York Times critic Mel Gussow, unable to ignore what Welch brought to the stage visually. “It would be inaccurate to say that Miss Welch is a better actress than Miss Bacall, but certainly at this stage of her career she is a more animated musical personality.”
Around that time, Welch said: “I have exploited being a sex symbol and I have been exploited as one. I wasn’t unhappy with the sex goddess label. I was unhappy with the way some people tried to diminish, demean and trivialise anything I did professionally. But I didn’t feel that from the public.”
She was born Jo-Raquel Tejada in Chicago, Illinois, the first of three children, to Josephine (nee Hall) and Armando Tejada. Her father, an aeronautical engineer, was Bolivian. When Raquel was two, the family moved to San Diego, California, and, five years later, she joined the city’s junior theatre, attached to the city’s Old Globe, as well as starting ballet classes.
She said her father was volatile and terrifying, and she never saw any tenderness between her parents. One escape from this unsettled childhood came through putting on plays in the garage for friends and neighbours, using bedspreads for curtains.
On leaving La Jolla high school, San Diego, in 1958, she won a scholarship to study theatre arts at San Diego state college, but dropped out after a year to marry James Welch and became a weather presenter on KFMB, a San Diego television station.
After giving birth to two children, Damon and Tahnee, she left her husband, intending to follow her acting ambitions in New York. In the event, she worked as a model and cocktail waiter in Dallas, Texas, before moving to Los Angeles.
She was screen-tested by the producer Cubby Broccoli, who had seen her in a Life magazine photo-spread, for a part in the 1965 Bond film Thunderball, and signed up by 20th Century Fox. But a technicality involving start dates and contract options ruled out the Bond film and she was cast in Fantastic Voyage (1966), a big-budget sci-fi submarine saga, clad in a wetsuit.
After One Million Years BC, Welch – again in a bikini – played Lilian Lust, one of the Seven Deadly Sins, alongside Peter Cook and Dudley Moore in Bedazzled (1967), a comedy irreverently resetting the Faust legend in 1960s swinging London.
Burt Reynolds and Jim Brown were the stars when she brandished a shotgun in the 1969 western 100 Rifles – another action role. But Welch made clear to the director, Tom Gries, that she would not be following his instruction to run naked through the desert with the weapon. She also disregarded attempts to get her to shower under a water tower minus her shirt.
She returned to comedy for the satire The Magic Christian (1969) to play Priestess of the Whip alongside Peter Sellers’s millionaire who adopts the homeless Ringo Starr. She took top billing in Myra Breckinridge (1970), as a transgender movie critic, in a misjudged adaptation of Gore Vidal’s landmark novel.
Welch had the chance to shine in The Wild Party (1975), a period drama about the demise of silent pictures from the producer-director partnership of Ismail Merchant and James Ivory, in which she was cast as Queenie, the lover of a fading screen comedian. But she fell out with Ivory over a number of issues, for example refusing to do a bedroom scene nude. “From nearly the first day, we were at loggerheads,” he recalled, “and no professional relationship, no working relationship, was ever established.”
Switching to television brought Welch cameos in everything from the sitcoms Mork & Mindy (in 1979, as a villain from outer space) and Evening Shade (1993) to Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (in 1995) and CSI: Miami (in 2012). She also comically played a temperamental version of herself attacking Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards) and Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) in a 1997 episode of Seinfeld.
She had a regular role in the comedy-drama series Date My Dad (2017) as Rosa, former mother-in-law of Ricky (Barry Watson), trying with his three children to find him love again following the death of his wife.
In 1997, there was another stint on Broadway, in the musical Victor/Victoria. She replaced Julie Andrews, who was undergoing throat surgery, for the final seven weeks of its run at the Marquis theatre. Variety described Welch as “at best a pleasantly passable singer”, suiting “the costumes better than she does the vocal and acting requirements”.
She returned to the cinema with a cameo role in the romcom Legally Blonde (2001), starring Reese Witherspoon. Her last film was How to Be a Latin Lover (2017).
Welch was married and divorced four times. She is survived by Damon and Tahnee, and by her brother, Jimmy.

Poor Leonardo DiCaprio. Megastar gazillionaire he may be, but what good is any of that if the world won’t, in today’s parlance, accept his authentic self? And in DiCaprio’s case, that self is an indefatigable shagger of models under the age of 25. DiCaprio’s habit of breaking up with his girlfriends before they reach their mid-twenties, even after he long ago saw his own mid-forties disappear in the rear-view mirror, has become a tabloid joke. Ha-ha, Leo would rather go down with the Titanic than touch a decrepit hag of 30!
But last week the “ha” changed to “ew” when it was reported that the 48-year-old’s latest girlfriend, Eden Polani, is a model (of course) and all of 19 years old. “She wasn’t even born when Titanic was released!” gasped the internet. People, she wasn’t even born when Catch Me If You Can was released. The reaction was so resoundingly negative that DiCaprio’s people released a statement that the two were not — to use that great American euphemism — dating, although they declined to comment if they’d ever “dated”.
If you want an illustration of how dramatically sexual politics has changed in recent years, then just look at the travails of DiCaprio. Lauren Bacall was 19 when she met 44-year-old Humphrey Bogart on the set of To Have and Have Not, and the only person who was bothered by that was the film’s 48-year-old director, Howard Hawks — because he’d had his eye on Bacall, too.
This has all changed now, as the #MeToo movement brought a greater understanding of power abuse, coercion, grooming and exploitation. Many women, me included, have re-evaluated their past and marvelled at what they once accepted as normal or just inevitable. As a result, a successful man in his late forties who would have once been grinningly saluted as a playa for dating a teenage model now just looks sleazy and weird.
This has been a genuine sea change, and one only needs to look at, for example, the still jaw-droppingly low conviction rates for rape to understand why so many women feel empowered by it, now able to rely on collective public attitudes where the legal system has for so long failed them.

But with this kind of social revolution there is always a risk of overcorrection, and we are starting to see the effects of that. In The Sunday Times last weekend the psychotherapist Julie Lynn-Evans talked about the number of schoolboys she was seeing who were traumatised and even suicidal after being accused of predatory behaviour because they had put “a hand on a bosom” while “slightly drunk”. Such accusations largely happen online, for instance on the Whisper app and the site Everyone’s Invited, where they can be posted anonymously. Sandra Paul, a defence lawyer, said she had worked with dozens of families of boys who had been accused: “Even if the allegations are not proven, the boy usually has to move school or college to try to start again. He will have been ostracised by his peers and is guilty by association.”
No doubt some of those boys have done bad things and deserve the consequences. But many have simply been caught in a web of childish awkwardness on their side and nervy confusion on the girl’s. They are the first post-#MeToo generation, having to navigate new mores that few adults understand either. When does making a move become an unwanted advance? Is asking for consent thoughtful or presumptuous? Add alcohol, inexperience and teenage hormones to the mix and you have a blazing fire of misunderstandings. Some will argue these boys are justified collateral damage, that a few innocents being embarrassed is small beer compared with how often true guilt has gone unpunished. And it is true that damning by allegation will be the only way some girls and women get justice, no question. But it’s still unfair.
This kind of public shaming has shifted power balances. Also last weekend the actor Armie Hammer gave an interview to the online newsletter Airmail. Now, Hammer is not a figure who attracts sympathy in the way, say, a suicidal schoolboy does, given he comes from a wildly wealthy family and was, until recently, a successful actor. But two years ago he became a global joke when several women claimed he got off on sharing cannibalism fantasies. Rape allegations followed, and his career vanished.
Yet the rape allegations were dubious at best, at least one of his accusers had never even met him and the kinky fantasies were, according to the evidence presented in the Airmail piece, shared consensually. In the interview Hammer acknowledges “the power dynamics were off” in his relationships with women, because he was a rich celebrity and they were unknowns. But if his reputation could be totalled by shaky accusations, this redistribution of power looks less like justice and more like a modern version of The Crucible.
Again, some will argue this doesn’t matter: wronged women will always far outnumber the wronged men. But the recent positive changes can be sustained only if we acknowledge that there has been an overcorrection, and some have suffered because of it, and we need a balance. It means listening to allegations but not confusing them with proof. And it also means never forgetting that fortysomething men who date teenagers should be treated how Rose treated Jack in a movie I’m old enough to remember: they should be pushed into the sea.

who are some of your favorite actors and actresses??
Obvious disclaimer that just because someone’s listed here, it doesn’t mean I approve of everything they’ve ever done as a person!
Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, of course, but Alain Delon is such an incredible actor (highly recommend Rocco i e suoi fratelli and also La Piscine). James Caan is great in Thief and The Gambler!
Farley Granger is an extremely underrated actor, though he was in Rope and Strangers on a Train which are two of my favorite Hitchcock movies. He was openly bisexual, and that unfortunately had a negative impact on his career in the US, so he acted more in Europe in the ‘60s onward.
As for actresses, I absolutely love Jean Harlow and Lauren Bacall, they’re my top favorites of the classic Hollywood era. Kathy Bates has such incredible range. I can’t forget Gena Rowlands because she’s one of the most powerful actresses to ever hit the screen, I mean A Woman Under the Influence is a painful as hell masterpiece primarily because of her performance.
Anna Magnani was a force of nature too, Tennessee Williams wrote The Rose Tattoo specifically with her in mind and waited to have it adapted into a film until she felt like her English was good enough to star in it. I also recommend Mamma Roma and The Fugitive Kind (co-starring Marlon Brando! He was apparently intimidated to work with her because she was such a great actress).

35, 37, and 42 for your courier harriet? :)
35. what do their companions think of them? are they close? have they done any companion quests?
Arcade is kind of wary of Harriet? They get along well enough and she's intelligent enough to hold a decent conversation with him but I think their ideals for an independent New Vegas don't exactly match up as Harriet's motivations are a lot more selfish. She encourages him to put his father's Enclave past behind him and stay with the Followers and help the people of Freeside.
Boone and Harriet get along but mostly because they don't really talk to each other and are pretty happy to exist in a comfortable silence. He's the companion she trusts most in a fight and while there's nothing romantic between the two of them at all I like to think Harriet reminds Boone of Carla a little.
Cass and Harriet get along like a house on fire. Again they're both NCR, and Harriet understands Cass's want to come out and make a name for herself and they have a great time making bad moonshine, teasing troopers and shooting the shit. Harriet is more level headed than Cass is, so she encourages her to let the NCR courts deal with Gloria and Alice so she can save face, though deep down I think Harriet would have liked to have dealt with them both in a more violent way.
ED-E is Harriet's favourite little guy; he was the first companion she came across so she's spent the most time with him. She came to rely on him a lot for spotting enemies. She gets very defensive of him when people (including Arcade) comment negatively, and even though it wasn't the same ED-E, was incredibly devastated when he sacrificed himself to stop the missile launch at the end of Lonesome Road.
Harriet found Lily's history both incredibly sad yet interesting - it's not very often you hear stories from over 100 years prior. The Wasteland is a harsh place so I think Harriet did appreciate Lily's softer demeanour and in return Lily liked having someone she could take care of.
Raul's age and experiences lend him a kind of perceptiveness that the other companions (except Lily) just don't have, by merit of not being 200+ years old. So I think this means he's able to see through Harriet better than the others, and this puts her on edge as she very much likes to control and manufacture how the people around her perceive her. Not that he would ever say anything, she just finds it unsettling but it's very much a Her problem.
Rex doesn't like Harriet because of her hat unfortunately but she doesn't really take it personally... she understands he probably just wants to stay with the King. She does help him get better with Rey's brain, though it's more to gain favour with the King than anything else.
Veronica and Harriet had a rocky start because of the bad blood between the NCR and the Brotherhood. While they worked together for the mutual benefit, I don't think the rivalry/animosity is something they really recover from. Though Harriet does begin to recognise a similarity between herself and Veronica - that they're both willing to put their home/faction behind them if it's unwilling to change the direction it's headed in (NCR's increasingly imperialist policies and Kimball and Oliver's warmongering vs the Brotherhood's unwillingness to adapt and modernise), so Harriet fully encourages Veronica to leave the Brotherhood and instead join the Followers. Of course this ends with disastrous consequences and cements Harriet's bad feelings toward the Brotherhood even more and leaves Veronica adrift.
37. do they draw, paint, play any instruments?
Harriet can play piano (and sing!), though she hasn't done so in a very long time. She doesn't paint exactly, but she does spend some of her downtime drawing and copying from any Old World fashion illustration/patterns that she finds.
42. name a random fact about your courier.
Browning isn't her real surname, she took it and her nickname 'Slim' from Lauren Bacall's character in To Have and Have Not after watching the holotape.
