When Is a Small Press a Good Fit?
Tumblr media
When it comes to publishing, many writers will think about big publishers first. However, there are a lot of different publishing options out there to explore. NaNo participant and author, Clara Ward, talks about their experience publishing with a small press and gives you questions to consider while you think through your publishing options!
NaNoWriMo inspired me to write. Signing with a small press gave me the support I needed to publish a book I love.
I’d published books before—starting with NaNoWriMo sponsor deals in the early days of online publishing—but I never had the right skill set to promote those books. As a result, they never truly found their audience.
In November of 2020, I poured my heart into a genre-blurring near-future tale of sailing across the Pacific and building a neurodiverse, queer, and possibly magical chosen family. In 2021, I titled it Be the Sea and asked myself: What am I going to do with that?
1. Are you looking for fame or family?
Small presses are as varied as the people who form them. If you read widely, you may already have a treasured book on your shelf from your publisher-to-be. Try asking NaNoWriMo friends who share your interests if they’ve discovered any surprising or emerging sources for great reads. (At the very least, you may find books you’ll love in unexpected places!)
Admittedly, a small press doesn’t have a fortune to spend on paving your path to fame. But I have never felt as seen as when my soon-to-be publisher, E.D.E. Bell at Atthis Arts, wrote back, “I’m really in love with what you are doing and would like to talk about it.”
2. Do you have the bandwidth for working with others?
Even with the most supportive small press, you may have to push outside your comfort zone. I know authors who love the absolute control and freedom of self-publishing. For a time, I felt very comfortable just posting my NaNoWriMo fanfiction novels on Archive of Our Own. At most, I had one or two beta readers to offer feedback on those works. Whereas E.D.E. told me in one of our earliest conversations that in addition to our three rounds of editing we’d need “a good number of betas” to cover the range of topics we were working on together.
I was delighted! I knew what I’d written was ambitious, and I welcomed all the feedback I could get. But it turns out, each extra person in a process adds new challenges and delays. I had to stretch my empathy as well as my publishing timeline because, to quote E.D.E. again: “It’s a lot of emotion (as well as brain cycles) to go through...” Outside perspectives will only improve your writing if you are willing to work with them, to truly listen and learn.
3. Can you handle the two-way commitment?
No form of publishing is easy. The myth that authors write while others handle business and promotion is not true at the top, and certainly not with small presses. In my experience, working with Atthis Arts was like joining a team or chosen family. Beyond certain paid tasks, such as editing and sensitivity reading, I discovered a community of authors who freely offered coaching before my first public reading, social media boosting, tips for author webpages, and an extra pair of eyes on letters requesting bookshop readings or other events. While not all small presses work the same way, this supportive culture proved to be an excellent fit for me. Naturally, I wanted to give back whenever possible.
Small presses can only succeed with community. This month, as I promote the launch of Be the Sea at bookshops in Mountain View, Davis, and Sacramento, I will be introducing many Californians to my Michigan-based small publisher, Atthis Arts. When I stand up as a panelist at Norwescon in Washington state or at various science, library, or Pride events later in the year, I’ll be promoting more than Be the Sea by Clara Ward. I’ll give back by sharing my appreciation for small presses, the supportive and inclusive practices they can normalize, and the opportunities they open up for future writers and readers.
Tumblr media
Clara Ward lives in Silicon Valley on the border between reality and speculative fiction. Their latest novel, Be the Sea, features a near-future ocean voyage, chosen family, and sea creature perspectives, while delving into our oceans, our selves, and how all futures intertwine. Their short fiction has appeared in Strange Horizons, Decoded Pride, Small Wonders, and as a postcard from Thinking Ink Press. When not using words to teach or tell stories, Clara uses wood, fiber, and glass to make practical or completely impractical objects. I think it's really interesting how there's always something that relates to mental illness or addiction in each of the episodes for Fionna & Cake, portrayed through Simon, of course
Fionna Campbell: The feeling of bleakness that comes with routine.
This usually happens when someone begins their journey with therapy and medication, when your brain is slowly producing more energy but you don't feel happy with your current state
Simon Petrikov: The desperate urge to distance yourself from the decisions you've made during your lowest points
It can remind them of an incredibly hard time but for others it might have been the most fun they've had around a mentally ill person before, especially if their self destructive habits are "entertaining", such as substance abuse, hypersexuality or expressing one's self through art
Having others comment on how they "miss the old you" while going through therapy or rehab can be very disheartening and make it easier for someone to isolate from their loved ones
Cake The Cat: Getting exposed to a new situation while trying to settle into an accommodating routine.
It can be confusing, scary and worrisome but sometimes getting out of your comfort zone might be exactly what you need to fall in love with some aspects of your life that you've distanced yourself from
Prismo The Wishmaster: Processing trauma, specifically when it's brought up unexpectedly
Revisiting negative memories can make you feel like things are pointless and a never ending cycle of bad experiences, which in turn diminishes your will to get better and cope
It helps to have someone beside you to give you a dose of reality and to remind you that if you don't move forward you'll end up hurting the people that care about you AND yourself
Destiny: Feeling out of place when sharing experiences, even if the person you're in touch with has struggled with similar things
This happens a lot when someone relapses, because the safe space they had before, with people who've also dealt with mental illness or addiction, see it as a failure and forget that they also struggled at the start of their recovery
The Winter King: Internal reflection, looking into yourself and wondering "what if?"
The question usually comes from a place of guilt or feeling of insecurity. It usually comes to the thought of what things could have been, what you could have been, if those traumatic experiences had never happened
It's easy to shift the blame onto yourself for things that were never actually your fault, as a way to avoid the reality that abusers don't usually "get what's coming to them", which can also amplify self hatred and impulsive decisions
The Star: Coming to terms with the fact that your existence and actions have an influence on others around you, that your absence will impact their lives negatively
Mental illness makes it very easy to slip into the mindset that nothing matters and that things wouldn't be different if you weren't around, but noticing how your absence affects the people you care about can show you that your actions impact people's lives, usually for the better
Jerry: Opening up to someone who's willing to listen, sharing vulnerable parts of your life that makes someone understand you better
Talking about the happy parts of your past, before mental illness or addiction, can make you fall in love with life all over again

┊┊┊✧ ⁺ ⁺╚══ The art of Beauty ╝
Premise: Tengen never thought possible to fall in love so bad that he'd want to give away his freedom and finally settle down. Who said a flamboyant life can't have a bit of loving~?
Word Count: 3472
Note: This is set up in the Kimetsu academy world, just so you know~ ☀️
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
Life around the Kimetsu academy wasn’t always as fun as some may think it is.
Being a teacher in it, to be exact, can be a little bit of a pain in the ass. Especially if you like blowing things up.
Uzui Tengen wasn’t like the other teachers who went to refined universities, got a few degrees under their belt or came from important families with money.
He spent his youth doing things he wasn’t as proud of now as he was back then.
Leading a gang for example.
Though, they were an artistic one, or that’s what he likes to think. They rarely got into fights, and their only crime was to “vandalize property”, in other words, he liked to draw everywhere, to leave his mark in walls, benches, trash cans, you name it. And he was good at it at that, the old lady from the bakery even gave him free bread for a week for doing a lovely flower pattern on her door, it made her shop trend in social media as others came to take pictures of the door and her sales went over the roof. Even to this day she still sneaks an extra something in his bag.
His art was beautiful, very expressive, sorrowful even; he captured the image of a person very well and there was no better way to show his appreciation than by ruining one of their walls, or two.
When he started getting in real problems though, was when he started blowing things up. Art indeed explodes with this man, literally. But he never harmed anyone.
Coming from a past like this was unheard of for the prestigious Kimetsu academy, yet he was offered the art teacher position when the principal saw one of his beautiful murals. She wanted their kids to fully understand art, to see how it can actually move someone to tears, or even make someone contemplate their entire life. Art is something magestic, and having someone that understands it as well as Tengen wasn’t easy to come by. So, forgoing all the paperwork and all the problematic selection process, he was made their refined arts teacher.
But Tengen being who he is, wasn’t able to keep his profile low.
From the very beginning rumors about his past were heard in every corner of the school, how he was a ganster, a former one at least, how his big muscles were from going into big fights, some rumors even said he had killed three; none of this was true of course, but instead of making him a feared figure, it made him loved by many.
He was the only teacher who wasn’t as hooked by the rules as the others; rules were meant to be broken after all. So, as long as his students were willing to indulge him in whatever it was he wanted them to do that week, he rarely even spoke ill to any. He didn’t really care if they had their phones in their pocket, or if they arrived a few minutes late. Nobody had to ask for permission to go to the restroom, nor cared if they munched on a snack.
Not only that, but his classes were fun.
He had the craziest of ideas and made them all go out of their comfort zone constantly, wanting his students to experience different things as to him, that’s the only right way of growing up.
“Gansta-sensei, where are we going? We’ve walked for what? Fifteen minutes?” Zenitsu was clinging to Tanjiro’s arm, gasping for air as his friend was nearly carrying him at this point.
“We are painting clouds. You need to be closer to them to to fully understand them, duh…” he decided to take them on a hike today, combining Tomioka’s class with his own, a bit of exercise helps creativity flow, that’s why he’s so muscly, he combines them all the time.
“Can’t we just like, imagine a cloud? Or google it? Everyone knows what clouds look like…”
“No. You can’t. The hike is part of Tomioka’s lesson, not mine, go whine at him instead. That’s why you’re so pony, can’t even take a little stroll.”
“A LITTLE stroll??? Is that what this is to you, sensei? Because my lungs are burning like never before…I might actually be dying right now-? Oh my GOD?”
“Just breath, Jesus…Tomioka, your student is about to pass out. I’m going to head up first to get things ready at the top.” with a short nod, Giyuu went to help Tanjiro carrying Zenitsu who currently had foam coming out of his mouth and was wailing like a child.
They chose the mountain closer to the school, it was a good 2km hike, nothing too bad, and it was a beautiful day, the sun shining down at them, a perfect day to paint some clouds. There weren’t many, but they all had fun shapes and the landscape of the mountains around framed them to perfection.
While he was setting up the supplies, however, a tiny playful corgi jumped out of a bush, aiming for his hood.
The attack was nothing but child’s play, but Tengen lost three lives at the moment.
The first one was when the dog jumped at him. He didn’t know it was there, it was completely silent all the time and made his moves quietly. A true ninja.
The second was when he saw the hood of his favorite sweater chewed on and wet with puppy drool. It wasn’t destroyed, thankfully, but still pretty disgusting.
But the third life was the worse, and that was when he saw the owner of said puppy dog.
“Tengen-kun? Is that you?”
“(Y/N)…?”
Back in high school, there was a girl who sat behind him during class. She was way shorter than him and could never see the board. This ended up forcing them into a weird friendship that managed to get Tengen to graduate from high school as he actually had to pay attention and take notes for you.
Yet, you had gotten a scholarship to go abroad and get your degree, you’d be out of the country for who know’s how long and the things just died out, naturally.
Something he failed to mention though, is how he’s always had a huge crush on you.
The way you’d always try to peek through the gaps of his biceps at the board, how the tip of your tongue came out of your mouth when you were copying his notes, how you’d share your snacks with him, laugh at his silly stories, you were the only girl who didn’t mind he was involved in some dubious activities outside of school, and he ended up falling for you in no time.
Saying it didn’t hurt to see you leave would be a lie. But he’s not someone that gets tied down by anyone. He’s a free man and nobody would change that.
“Yes! Look at you!! You look…wow I mean yes, you look good!” your slight mumbling and rosy cheeks were making the man go blank. He wasn’t ready for this, what was he supposed to say?
“When did you come back? I….I didn’t know…”
“Oh well, that’s because I got back the day before yesterday! I just got my dog out of its quarantine and its going a little crazy, I’m sorry…Is your hoodie ok?” so you weren’t avoiding him, you literally just got back…
“And you changed your number, you goofball! How was I supposed to let you know? I sent you a message in your insta but seems like you don’t check that often either…”
“Oh I get a bunch of spam so I turned my notifications off, I’m sorry.” you even tried to let him know…still think about him even…can this day get any better?
But he spoke too soon. While you were picking up your tiny dog who kept on chewing on his hood, his students finally reached the top, groaning in pain.
“Oh my god! Gansta-sensei! Is that one of your three wives?” you almost dropped your dog…
“What? No, and I told you I don’t have three wives, dammit! That’s just a rumor! I live in a shared house, they just happen to live there too!” his explanation was a bit unnecessary, it’s not like the kids needed to know all that, but he was panicking, how can this kid be this annoying? Seriously, could he even chose a worse moment to ruin?
Relief was visible on your beautiful face and for that Tengen was thankful.
“Go do your work kids, I want at least two different clouds and I don’t want just the sky and two white mushes, you heard me Inosuke? You have to take elements of nature into consideration, that’s all I’m gonna say, go be creative.” you were in awe, looking at him like if it was your first time meeting. He wasn’t just way bigger than he was before, but more handsome and responsible too, he actually looked like an adult, to a surprising degree.
“You’re a teacher?”
“Yeah, an art teacher…can you believe that? Me? A teacher?” his loud rambotious laugh was contagious, making you giggle, “Yes I believe it. You’ve always been fantastic at it. Remeber when you had to help me with your notes? You were always patient and helpful. Besides your murals were always breathtaking.” he was suddenly selfconssious at the fact that you remembered his art works, that you believed he could be a good teacher, nobody gives him credit for that, nobody believed in him, except the principal of the school of course. It made him feel warm and fuzzy inside, something he’s never felt before, even if he’s dated a bunch of girls in the past.
“Gimme your new number, I gotta get this little delinquent back home, but it’d be pretty cool if we could meet later…and hang out?” you were looking at him through your oh so pretty lashes, making his insides turn to mush in seconds.
“Yeah sure, of course! Here.” he handed you his phone and you saved yourself as contact, dialing your number right after to save his.
“I’ll text you later then! I have time tonight if that’s ok with you~”
“Hey Tanjiro…” Zenitsu was crouching down behind a tree, paying as close attention as he could to the scene unfolding. “Pssst…Tanjirooooo….”
“What is it Zenitsu? I’m trying to draw that dragon cloud over there but it looks more like a cat….”
“Stop talking about stupid clouds and come here! Look, sensei’s got a hot date!”
Even when they thought they were being as quiet as possible, you both heard them which made you chuckle and Tengen blush.
“These damn kids, I swear…”
“Well he isn’t wrong, isn’t he handsome~?” throwing him a playful wink, you went back down the mountain with your tiny dog; your little workout outfit pulling hearts out of Tengen’s eyes as he stared at your retrieving form. “Yeah, he’s definitely not wrong…hot damn (Y/N)…”
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
Saying he spent all day texting you was an understatement, the man didn’t even eat his lunch, forget about the damn clouds, nothing was more pressing for him at that moment that to get back into your life.
True to his student’s statement that morning, he in fact lived with three women. He didn’t lie though, the rumor of them being all his wives was definitely not true, law would not allow such a thing.
But what he omitted was how he had indeed been with all of them. More than once.
While they were all beautiful, professional, and wonderful women, to him they were just always there. It was not fun, there was no thrill, they threw themselves at him since the very beginning and he just went with the flow.
You were different.
Even after knowing you for such a long time and sharing multiple tender moments and deep secrets with each other, you never went beyond resting your head on his shoulder and hugging his arm.
That to this day, is still his favorite memory of all times.
He’s been with many women during this time apart from you, but not even one, and I mean it, not even a single one of them made him smile.
Some made him smirk, that’s a fact. But a true smile, one from the heart? Nah, just you. And that’s something that always stood out to him, something he made up himself like an impossible goal, “I’ll never be serious with anyone that can’t even make me smile the way (Y/N) did”, an invincible first love, one of those that never lets you move on, always making you compare everyone to the one you once loved.
But that invincible first love was now back in his life and very much interested in eating dinner at his place, something he really wanted to avoid.
“My sweet pumpkin…can’t we go out? I know of a fine place, you still like pancakes right?” he was desperate at this point, bringing you to his place was not going to take this anywhere safe, of course he loves the girls they’re great, but you…it was just in a different level and he wasn’t willing to risk loosing you this soon.
“I do yeah, but I thought maybe we could watch a movie or something…stay for a little longer so we could, you know…catch up…” the nervousness of your tone of voice was driving him insane, were you trying too say what his brain was processing it as right now? Where you trying to stay for the night and “catch up”? No, never, you’ve never even kissed…is it because you’re adults now? No, no, no, his head was just in the gutter as usual.
“Can we try your place, sunshine? I just…I live in a shared house like I told you earlier, I don’t even have a tv in my room and its so loud…I wish to have some time alone with you, something more calm and relaxing, you know, to catch up…” he couldn’t avoid it, everything that came out of his mouth was as suggestive as his thoughts were, but your voice was so mellow..he just wanted to bury his face on your chest and cuddle you all night, was it possible? Probably not but hey, he’s gotta try at least.
“I haven’t finished unpacking, everything is a mess…but I mean sure, if you don’t mind…”
“Of course not, princess! I can even help you! Having a strong male around to do all the heavy lifting could be quite handy!” if it sounded forced you didn’t notice, you agreed right away and the date was set, he was to take some nice wine and fried chicken because, why not, that’s gangster enough, isn’t it..? It did make you chuckle but honestly nothing sounded better than catching up with your old crush/friend while eating some fatty foods and some good wine to finish it all with that super hyped movie everyone’s talking about and none of you have watched just yet.
It all sounded lovely, all planned out perfectly, that was until your dog knocked out the wine bottle to the floor shattering it to nothing but a red puddle on your brand new carpet.
While the wine wasn’t at all expensive, it did kill the mood somehow and you ended up indeed just catching up with life.
It was amazing to you how much he’s grown from the cute delinquent you used to love secretly, to this school teacher who’s been assigned to develop future talents.
You on the other hand struggled a lot while abroad and were a bit lost in your path, didn’t know if you wanted or not to continue with your choice of major and had just been hired in a company you didn’t like in the slightest. Overall, your life hasn’t been as great and seeing him after all this time was definitely lifting your spirits.
Your workplace was just a station away from his school and so you agreed to see each other again the next day. And the day after. And the one after that too.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
“Why is it so hard for you guys to believe I wanna buy an apartment? Am I not allowed to be fully self-sufficient?? I even bought a fridge already!” Tengen was huffing while sitting on his cubicle, Tomioka and Rengoku enjoying some afternoon tea while Kanae kept on bugging him.
“You have a woman don’t you? Just spill it out! Don’t think you can deceive me! I’m a woman after all.” Kanae was pretty rounded at this point in life, her first pregnancy confirmed to be a boy now growing at the speed of light within her belly, causing her mood to be a little…unstable…
“You’re so nosy! What if I do? Is that illegal?” the three of them gasped in unison, so in sync that it was almost comical.
“I knew it!”
“So you’re settling down? I didn’t know you wanted something like that for your life…wasn’t the flamboyant life your path or some crap like that?” Giyuu and his sharp tongue-
“You can still be flamboyant and have a lovely family.”
“Rengoku…my man…you’re the only one who gets me in this world. Maybe I should marry you instead…” Tengen has been struggling with the process of moving on with the relationship. He didn’t like titles, he didn’t want to be someone’s husband. He believed in the freedom of the heart, on how creativity gets stuck when there’s something to tie you down. He kind of wanted to just live with you, because he couldn’t bare the thought of waking up and not having you in his arms…because he couldn’t even go to his place anymore and has been wearing the same shirt for three days in a row just because of his needy self, because he needed you to be his, but he didn’t fully understand what that meant.
“I’m taken bro, sorry.”
He let out a long sigh, sinking into his chair, “I don’t know if I want to get married…is that a bad thing? I mean I love her, I know that for sure, I also want her to be with me all the time, to a scary extent…I even made her go with me to the toilet and hold my hand because the burritos we ate last night were going rampage within me-“
“Oh my god just shut up Uzui, you disgust me…”
Laughter was filling the office once more, the heavy air around Tengen finally lifting. “It’s fine if you just want to live together, there’s many couples that never get married and still live happily together for a long time.” “Yeah exactly, just make sure to talk to her, that you’re both on the same page. Who knows? Maybe she wants the same!” it was as simple as that, wasn’t it? He was just scared of hurting your feelings, what if you wanted a huge wedding and five kids? He was not ready for that, and for all he knows, he might be ready eventually, if that’s something you want he’s willing to compromise, he just needs time, though can’t fathom living a second more without you by his side.
And it wasn’t bad at all, communication is the key to a good relationship, some say.
The happiness in your face when he told you he wanted you to go with him apartment hunting was beyond anything he had imagined before. You wanted to be with him as much as he wanted to be with you.
Marriage and having a family aren’t subjects everyone wish to discuss so early in life and while he sees himself by your side for as long as possible, he was a little behind his coworkers who built one of their own rather quickly.
For now he was happy knowing he’d get to spend every single minute of his free time in the same space as you, he loved the thought of you cooking dinner while he worked on his paintings, the thought of him letting you sleep a few minutes more by getting breakfast ready before waking you up. It was the perfect beginning to a future he never even dreamed of, a happy one, filled with love.

doing a lil recap of my top 10 15 (it was supposed to be 10 and i could not narrow it down oops) best(? this is subjective as fuck i guess it's more like my personal faves) drawings of the year! *the crowd cheers* (it’s me I’m the crowd)
15: paradise by the dashboard light! i hate to rank her so low bc i spent ages on her but it seems i don't love the result that much anymore so :/ a for effort for me tho this was ambitious
14: cheer girl loml <33 not my best art technically by far but i went way out of my comfort zone for the background and the art style (for no good reason really) (i just wanted to do a comic book thing bc superhero vibes or whatever) (it did not come out the way i was hoping it would bc i think i got too frustrated) and we simply must acknowledge that. atog did things to me that i cannot explain
13: barbie meme brittana! not my best britt but truly sooo fun to work on. there's nothing quite like finding a fun rendering process and then never using it again (i don't even remember how i coloured this but i like it)
12: cowboy barbie brittana <3 they look good, they're about to kiss, cute outfits, pretty sunset, probably went overboard with the rim lighting, what's not to love? a banger, i think
11: i say a little prayer! i think the background is. questionable at best. but this is still really fun! i think i got possessed when i got to the uniforms bc goddamn they look good
10: klaine?? on this blog???? almost unheard of lmao i truly did not think i would like this one as much as i did. i'd consider ranking it higher if i wasn't constantly Unwell over brittana but again, i'm biased, and no one here should be surprised about that
9: pre-wedding kiss my beloved! with how insane i've been over this kiss it could perhaps be higher. i am gnawing on my desk as we speak i'm not even sitting at a desk rn
8: rutherchang x black swan!! ohhh u guys i don't talk about this one enough i think it's so pretty i don't even remember how i did the colours for it but rhgfdkngd?? love her, love pushing the glee x bts agenda, if any of u gifmakers are interested in making a mike chang x black swan lyric gifset i will love u forever
7: colour wheel challenge! busted my whole tiddies and ass for this one fellas. labour of love etc etc i think staring at the bright colours for so long made my eyesight worse and i'm ok with that
6: mistletoe brittana <33 easily the best instalment of this series by a long shot! recency bias (and also just. regular bias) made me rank her much higher originally but technically she is not the most intricate piece so she must sit down here
5: prom queen kurt! dare i say a girlslay on my behalf? i think i dare. every time i see it i think i should do more glosters (glee posters) and then i don't. i could tho they would be really cool (source: dude trust me)
4: churro kiss redraw!!! genuinely Not Sane over this! never have been, never will be! redraws are like crack to me and so is this kiss
3: furtana!! i neglected them for far too long this year but if neglecting them results in art like this i may have to do it again
2: heart kiss <3 if we're being really honest and vulnerable in the chat tonight i think this is technically my best of the brittana kiss screencap redraw things i've done this year? which i did not see coming but i guess practice means refining the process etc etc so. it makes sense ig. mwah to them <3
1: black or white gcv animation <3 it's not what i would call my best drawing (bc it's, yknow, not just one drawing) but it is what i would call the product of a very obsessive thought and some frantic art sessions. objectively it's the coolest thing i've done this year so it deserves the top spot. i'm proud of it i hope to glanimate more next year. also this isn't art but it's a relevant post that i still stand by months later

Any advice on how to break out of an insane long art/writing block? My minds been going crazy with ideas, yet my hands say “Nope! lol!” Mode for some time.
I absolutely hate art blocks they're the worst. I've had some that lasted for months on end, sometimes a whole year so I'll give what advice I can to help you break out of this funk. 👍
Important bits are highlighted.
I suggest changing up your drawing environment for a bit, declutter anything on your desk or drawing spot, clean anything that could be in the way. Sometimes a change in your environment can help you feel less stressed. Cluttered spaces can change how we behave and it can also mess up our thinking process without us even noticing it so give that a try. (This applies to studying and doing homework as well!)
If you can, go to a new location and just try relaxing. Try going to a park, a colorful part of a city, a zoo you never went to, or even just walk around a neighborhood. This works similar to the above advice with changing your environment.
Write down the drawing idea you had for later and sketch something else lazily, do not put effort into the sketch, just feel and do whatever. After that, practice SKETCHING (sketching, not drawing, this does not need to be perfect or a masterpiece or a final product of sorts) parts of your desired drawing idea. Do this until you feel yourself being more comfortable.
RELAX! A lot of times when I start to feel an art block coming on mid-drawing, I notice my hand and face is not relaxed. If you feel yourself gripping a pencil/pen hard when drawing, take deep breaths in and out and relax. Drawing with your hands gripped is a sign of stress and art should be relaxing, not a stressful chore.
This follows up on number 4. Try lightly exercising. And I emphasize lightly. Especially if you are not someone who regularly exercises (remember to stretch before). Do something to get your heart going just a little bit. Sometimes doing this helps relives stress you may not be aware of and it also makes you feel more loose and energetic afterwards. This is because your body will release endorphins (the hormones that make you happy) into the body after exercising. Along that, make sure you're hydrated. No really, drink water.
SLEEP WELL! Make sure you are taking care of your body by getting enough sleep.
Draw out of your comfort zone. Try to start practicing on drawing things you are not usually used to drawing. Your Kryptonite basically. Personally, my kryptonite is cars and mechanical things.
That's all I can think of for now. If I think of more, I will reblog this with the attached new list.
You may or may not be confused on why I am focusing so much on the body and not actual drawing part itself. The thing is, art block is both a mental thing and physical thing that results from stress, exhaustion, or other factors you may not be aware of that can be helped (usually). An example? When I'm busy with college or when I had my first job last year I was so stressed out that the very idea of getting out my graphics tablet and drawing made me feel like I didn't want to draw anymore. I lost interest in doing something I really like. The same happened when I was in a STEM high school. I was too stressed out to pick up a pencil and draw.
You need to make sure your brain is stimulated and relaxed before you draw and after you draw and that can be done through exercise, new changes to the environment, or simply just trying new things with art. Your brain is in charge of so many things and that includes how you're feeling, so do what you can to take care of it.

i'm finally making that writing/art group I was talking about
Ever feel like every time you try to share your writing and/or art online you are just shouting into the void? Or maybe more accurately, shouting into a room full of people who are all talking to each other but don't seem to notice you? Is having your work seen by others simultaneously your greatest desire and your greatest fear? Mine too~
Community is so fricken important, especially to creatives and the creative process. Surrounding myself with creative people who encourage, support, and celebrate each other is a really big goal of mine. So, I'm starting a lil discord server in the hopes of cultivating that kind of community.
I want it to be a really positive, welcoming, and helpful space for creatives of all kinds (with a focus on writers and artists because that's what I know best, but by no means limited to that!), so I was hoping anyone who is interested in joining could help me get it up and going by giving their thoughts and suggestions on what goes on in the community (and also probably helping me actually set up the discord server bc I've only made a few very very simple, small servers in the past).
(I should also go ahead and mention that this server/group will be only for people 18 and up because I am just not currently comfortable being in any way responsible for minors, sorry!!! Oh, and also no ai art)
These are my ideas so far:
The emphasis for the server should be to encourage, inspire, connect with, and support other creatives, meaning it will be encouraged for people to engage with each others work, both on the server and also on other platforms where the work is posted
I have a personal pet peeve with unsolicited advice, so there can be specific channels where people post their work when they want critiques, and on the other channels the expectation would just be to leave your reactions to the work, not criticisms
I'd like for there to be regular "check-in" kind of things, almost like group meetings but more flexible because people will likely be in many different time zones and won't necessarily be able to make a specific time. The check-ins could be maybe once a week? And there could be one for writing and one for art (on different days I think). During the check-ins we could share a bit of our WIPs (will probably have to put a word limit on the writing) and maybe have a discussion topic for that week or something. Idk I just want it to be a time where we try to come together and actively discuss and engage and stuff, to really build the sense of community
Also different channels where people can talk about things like world-building and art styles and healthy habits for creating and things like that!
That's kinda all the ideas I have right now, please please comment/reply to this post if you have any suggestions and/or you want to join the group!
Also please reblog so more people see this~

What would be for tips on designing characters?
This is kind of a complicated topic.
I think the first tip is to identify what the character design is for. like is it for a school project, a prompt, a parody of something else (and is said parody meant to be a tribute, or satirical), etc. Is the purpose going to be making them heroic, cute, cool, sexy, intimidating, scary, goofy, etc. Is this just for fun, experimenting, or something to represent yourself? Is this a member of a species/cast of characters, and if so, what traits are common to the species/cast, and what traits are unique to them? Knowing that beforehand can help set your expectations, and give you some direction to work towards (or away from? if you're really trying to experiment...)
The next step I'd usually suggest doodling ideas off the top of your head. it's unlikely to be "good" but it does help establish your current perspective that's been built up subconsciously over the years from exposure to media and your own tastes. It's a good point of reference to start off with imo. Sometimes that might be all you need, if you really like what you came up with and it speaks to you in some way.
Typically though, especially if you have a specific goal in mind or are learning character design or are trying to venture out of your comfort zone, it won't look that good/unique yet. That's when you'd begin researching: take a few characters that come to mind that fit your idea of goals established. If you want to make a cool character, what are traits that stick out to you as "cool"? Is it certain accessories, their shape, personality, or what they do? Those are things worth considering. If you have an art style established, how can you translate those aspects? If there's real-world or other references you can bring in, that's always good too, and has a better chance of coming up with something that feels more personal/unique.
Along with researching is when you'd start experimenting with this stuff. Trying out different body/head proportions, eye shapes, how hair looks. A really important thing to consider is how often you expect to draw this character. If it's something you know you'll draw hundreds or thousands of times, then you really need to weigh in what parts of them are fun to draw versus not fun, whether you can simplify parts of them into easier shapes, is the difficult aspect something you're willing to get better at overtime, what aspects lend itself to a wider range of expression (unless the goal is to make them NOT expressive, or w/e).
This is also where I'd start thinking more about stuff like personality and how they think. Maybe you have an idea already that's part of your overall goal, but now you should be trying to figure out how to convey that in the design. What's their history? What people do they interact with regularly and how do they interact with them? What's their long term and short term goals? Who is their favorite my little pony character? You don't HAVE to answer all of these, and you definitely don't have to commit to them forever, but it's the kind of stuff that will help inform your design more, and maybe even aid in world-building (if that's part of your goal).
I think the final "tests" would be trying to make some kind of reference stuff, arriving at a consistent draft of your findings. This can involve doing some turnarounds, seeing what they look like at different angles, or minor details. Expression tests involving the face, or body.
If it feels like something that appeals to you and hits on the goals you've established, then I say that's good enough... but I also think you should be open to experimenting on them further too, when inspiration hits. Character design is something most people change their tastes or get better at, and it's good to be open-minded about trying new things to see if that works out. It can be as complex as a whole redesign or just changing the color scheme. And while I described the process linearly, sometimes you'll get to the reference part and realize the goal itself ought to be changed. That's fine too, it's good to bounce back and forth all the steps if that's what helps you create something you like.
Of course we don't really design stuff in a vacuum and post stuff for others to look at, so I think another important aspect to temper your expectations is to know that not every character is created equal. Your concept could be an android-samurai that is haunted by math problems and maybe you can pull off that concept the best anyone ever could... it's not likely to get as many notes as "bunny girl with big boobs #35279". That doesn't mean you failed, just that your potential audience will be more niche, and likely their connection to a character idea, if presented well, might be deeper.
Of yeah, presentation. People aren't going to always know every single aspect of your character at a given moment: it's good to keep in mind what the themes of a character are and at least try to be consistent with that. It's totally okay to draw them in silly memes all you want, but don't blame other people if they have trouble taking them seriously when you suddenly put them in a dramatic trauma web series (you would have to pace your transition into it thoughtfully). You should try to present them in ways that make sense for their character. But sometimes you discover that maybe you don't like that anymore... it's fine to shift them into a new direction, I think that's part of the artistic discovery process.
That's all I can think right now that's broad. I think anything else is more just specific to my own preferences.

my art summary for 2023! this year was very all over the place for me, but i'm glad to say that i've created despite personal hardships (that were mostly unrelated to art) 🥺 thank you everyone for taking a look at my work this year! 💙 i hope 2024 will be just as fun! 🎉
some documentation of my feelings about art this year under the cut:
i think i was way too hard on myself this year with my art. and i am sitting here like. "goddamn dude. why would you do that to yourself for. stop that LOL"
honestly i would go in a time machine to give myself a pat on the back for drawing SPLATOON for the first time in like 6 years or something. trying to learn the proportions and figuring out how i wanted to draw splatoon was very hard. and i still don't know what i want my splatoons to look like!
i remember back in late 2019 i would bitch to my friend that i didn't understand how face anatomy worked and i would tell her how it was the end of the world. but as i drew more i eventually understood faces better (and i'm still learning!). funny how that works! so i like to think my sploons will be like this too :D
the other thing i would have told 2023 me: overthink less about the learning process. maybe it's because i have way too much free time on my hands but. when i'm not actively drawing i have a lot of analysis paralysis and perfectionism. so i end up not starting anything out of my comfort zone even if it's just for practice because my brain is so hung up on trying to "learn new things optimally" and making things "good enough." and. i. guys.
pleasepleasepleaseplease don't do that to yourself its NOT GOOD!! give urself permission to fuck up and make pieces that dont work out!! u can always revisit the concept later u dont have to do it perfectly the first time!! please!!! i am giving myself and anyone else reading permission to fuck up in creative endeavors. woo!!! i love making mistakes and fixing them later!!
THAT SAID for the things i did sit down and do, i like them (like the pieces here!)! and i'm glad i did them because its like! woaw! more data to work with! so im hoping to do more of that next year! sit down and let art come out! not everything needs to be bangers! things will click eventually! trust!!
so my goal for 2024 is to draw things out of my comfort zone (mostly backgrounds, maybe comics) even if it looks shite!!! no more fucking grid and gradient we are putting characters in LOCATIONS!!! and as a fun bonus it would be funny if each of my pieces in my art summary next year looks like it was made by a different person. because i think its funny to do that. and u should make urself laugh while doing anything :D (i love silly!!! yay!! yipee!! wahoo!!)

Hey I love your blog and I’m a huge Columbo fan! Haven’t gotten too much into the series yet I’m only on season 3 and I wanted to know if you have a definitive ranking of the seasons in your opinion?
thank you! my personal ranking of the individual seasons is as follows:
S TIER - APEX LITTLE GUY
season 3 - absolute all-star season. peter falk was in his prime and columbo's personality was fully developed. he's serious but in good humor, highly competent but still human (as opposed to the omniscience he gains in later seasons). the murderers are fantastic, the plots are interesting, the humor hit its stride, the writing and pacing is artful. even the filler is subtly whimiscal and entertaining. peak, peak columbo.
Tumblr media
season favorite: any old port in a storm
A TIER - UPPER ECHELON
season 2 - all of the above, just a very close second in my eyes as i find the episodes overall slightly duller and character of columbo in the process of developing, rather than fully solidified.
Tumblr media
season favorite: a stitch in crime
season 1 - a close third. the mysteries are tight and fresh from the minds of levinson and link, and it shows. the photography/editing is very experimental, very cutting edge. the only caveat is that early columbo is, in retrospect, just a bit too flat/stodgy. the characterization that can only cultivate with time just wasn't there yet.
Tumblr media
season favorite: suitable for framing
season 4 - still superb columbo but trails behind season one just a little bit more. i find it not quite as genius, not as tight. i always firmly suspend my disbelief with columbo, but some of the plots start getting a little wavery. what this season really has going for it is that columbo steps out of his comfort zone more often and hits a pitch perfect balance of whimsical and serious. thus, even when the plot suffers, the character still shines. a delightful season to watch.
Tumblr media
season favorite: by dawn's early light
(continued under the cut)
B TIER - QUITE GOOD
season 5 - solid columbo, but the discerning viewer finds the show begins to miss more often and is perhaps past its prime. i respect the risk-taking, but by the very nature of taking risk, things don't always quite pan out. that said, this season had some very important bits that pushed the character and, coupled with patrick mcgoohan's influence, had really some of the most fantastic and unique outings of the series. however, nbc's frustration with falk at this point is palpable--season five is the final full installment of the original series.
Tumblr media
season favorite: now you see him
C TIER - MERELY GOOD
season 6 - with only three episodes, not much of a season to begin with. some parts are fantastic, some of the best in the series, and some parts start getting hard to watch. the episodes feel mishandled because they were. between logistical conflicts involving writing, directing, producing, and falk trying new ways of playing columbo, this season is a little bit all over the place. overall merely just good in the grand scheme of things.
Tumblr media
season favorite: the iq murder case. no, you are not getting me to say the whole thing.
season 7 - still good, but even more mishandled than season 6 and boy is the flanderization in full swing. columbo starts to feel like a different character, and combined with overhauls in showrunning, it begins to feel at some points like a different show. people responded well to columbo's subtle comedic facets, so instead of simply iterating upon them, they immediately blew them out of proportion. columbo was no longer a mystery show with comedic elements, it was a comedy with mystery elements, which mucks up the whole tone of the show. it's handled with less care and comes off as less organic and more hammy than previous seasons. i kind of want to love most of season 7 more than i actually do.
Tumblr media
season favorite: the conspirators
season 9 - believe it or not, a more distant third here lies this stretch of 90s era columbos. aside from the abominations that are murder in malibu and murder: a self portrait, i think they actually sort of hit a stride here. stronger outings like columbo cries wolf, agenda for murder, rip mrs. columbo, and even uneasy lies the crown feature prominently. no glory days by any means but still nearly as watchable as the aforementioned seasons.
Tumblr media
season favorite: columbo cries wolf
D TIER - HOLDING MY NOSE
season 8 - i no longer consider these episodes "good" in the way columbo is magically good. any good moments are good in spite of what they are, not because of it.
the first reboot season had no idea what it wanted to be. aside from sex and the married detective and occasionally a scene or two from the other episodes, i almost never revisit these. these episodes commit common but fatal columbo sins: columbo goes to the guillotine is so hackneyed it hurts, murder smoke and shadows goes on for entirely too long AND has a villain who is utterly obnoxious to the viewer, and grand deceptions isn't bad per se but an absolute snoozefest. married detective DOES have the awful tuba scene, but it's something you can fast-forward through, rather than fast-forwarding through the entire episode.
Tumblr media
season favorite: sex and the married detective
season 10 - these are on their way to the garbage bag. i lump these in with most of the specials and such. when people talk shit about latter-day columbo, they mean a lot of the stinkers in this pile. aside from columbo goes to college (the best reboot outing) and columbo likes the nightlife (the final columbo outing which happened to be weirdly really good), i very seldom revisit these episodes. again, aside from isolated scenes, performances, or moments, you can safely walk away from these or just watch them in passing. they are watchable tv, but rarely have any of the columbo sparkle.
Tumblr media
season favorite: columbo goes to college
F TIER, GARBAGE BAG
murder in malibu can suck an egg

Have you ever wanted to draw something but you fought due to your skill level at the time you decide not to do it
Yeah, I do this all the time. I have cried and screamed, and I almost thrown things cause I have gotten so frustrated with myself. However, I learned that sometimes you gotta push through it to improve. (AFTER taking a break Expessialy if you get as worked up as crying and screaming) Yes, you should enjoy art, but something I heard was "If it's not challenging, you're not learning" if you're struggling to drawing something don't give up, take break and sit back. Either do something else you like or draw something more in your comfort zone and then come back to it when you're calmer and figure out what you were struggling so badly with and find references to help you improve. You won't improve overnight, but it for sure helps.
If you struggle with anatomy, I suggest rotoscoping. Find a pose of a REAL PERSON, or take a picture of yourself. Don't just trace. Use shapes to make a sketch over said person. Then, put your reference to the side and draw. Just tracing the references won't teach you anything, so learning the shaped of different body types can help a lot.
If you struggle with background (like I do), get references once more and sit down and draw a couple of backgrounds. If you start getting frustrated, take a break. Another thing you can do is watch videos. I like my videos simple because they help me understand more.
This channel has helped me quite a bit, but remember, it's always good to find things from multiple sources and things that help you achieve what you want.
Basically it all sums up to
Get out of your comfort zone
Practice, Practice, practice
Use references
Take breaks
But don't give up
And yeah, sometimes it's hard to do that, and you end up giving up. Trust me, I have done that plenty of times, and that's okay to get so frustrated you give up from time to time. So long as you remember that you WILL improve. Don't give up forever. Come back to it or something similar to it. With fresh eyes and a calm thought process. Turn your "can nots" into "I can, with practice" it probably doesn't help everyone but it has helped me.
Skill isn't something you have overnight, and while you might be skilled in, let's say drawing hair. You might struggle to draw the actual face, in which case you get references and sketch a couple of faces. You don't have to do it for a long time. Ten minutes every day can go a long way.
Skill isn't something we are born with, it's something we gain with time, effort, and support. A child isn't born to walk, and yet a child learns. Birds are made to fly, but not born able to fly, no matter how many times either of them fall, they get up and try again.

Chains On Your Body (Nakamoto Yuta X Reader)
Tumblr media
Description: Yuta X Reader, Angst,SMUT 18+, Use of Alcohol, Tattoos, Swearing
SONG FOR THIS FIC:
youtube
As you take your last sip of your warm coffee, your ears listen to the electrifying sound coming from the bed in front of you… yes you are at the tattoo parlor again! Your eyes focus on the lean body in front of you being tattooed, it looks so painful yet so interesting and intriguing. Yuta, one of your friends, asked you to accompany him to his tattoo appointment today, which you of course said yes to. You can’t miss spending time with him…he is quite entertaining, despite being manipulative and demanding.
Oh how you want a tattoo of your own! You just want to express your personality through body art and even piercings but your parents would kill you! They basically control everything you do and every decision you make depends on their approval. Your love life, health, job and even your own body is controlled by your parents!
‘All done!’ the tattoo artist said, Yuta being pleased with the results as he looks up and shows you immediately. ‘I looooove it! What do you think y/n?’…you didn’t process that, you were so fascinated by this man staring into your eyes. ‘Y/n? Hello, you ok…’ he asked concerned to which you quickly replied ‘yes I’m fine, it looks great!’
That same evening the two of you went to go get some celebratory drinks, to celebrate his pain tolerance and your ability to keep up with him and his shananigans! ‘Cheers!’ he practically yelled at the bar you two sat at, gulping down the shot of vodka you really didn’t want to order since you have work in the morning and your alcohol tolerance is about 0 percent. ‘Hey y/n, I was wondering…why don’t we get matching tattoos?’ your eyes basically peeled out of your skull from that sentence alone and your throat started swelling with nerves. ‘Uhm, my parents will kill me if I get a tattoo. You know how they are…’ you said hoping the situation was resolved. ‘Just get one where they won’t see!’ he said. It’s like he is trying to make you uncomfortable!
‘My parents see everything…’ you once again tried to calm down the situation, but to your dismay he replied with ‘Really, your dad looks at your tits?’ Shocked was an understatement, you felt like you wanted to cry in that exact moment and your head felt like it was going to explode from rage! ‘Would you let your mom see your dick?’ you said sharply, which made him uncomfortable and now you both just sat there staring into your shot glasses. Yuta slams down some cash on the counter and gives you one last look before he exits the closed off bar. You felt bad, guilty, you thought to yourself “did I take it to far?”
‘Yuta, wait…’ you shouted down the street where he was walking to his car. You didn’t want him to leave, since he was your lift and you didn’t want to leave things open ended. ‘I’m sorry okay…I went too far and I apologize for that. I’m sorry.’ Yuta stands still in the quiet street, allowing you to convey your sorrow. ‘Look y/n, I shouldn’t have said what I said, but you anger me so much…’ Yuta said with a hushed tone. ‘Anger you? What have I done to anger you?’ ‘You never step outside your comfort zone, and for once I’d like you to do what you want, not what your parents dictate!’ he replied to your question fueled with spite.
He has a point, your parents have always been in the way of you and what you want! ‘I hate knowing that you feel the need to fit into the innocent image and that you’re this beautiful woman who needs to please everyone in order to prevent disappointment when you are perfect just the way you are! I love you just the way you are!’ he exclaims, making you blush… he thought you were perfect? ‘Wait did you say… perfect?’ you asked to which he softly fluttered his eyes and looked at you with his brown orbs. ‘Yeah you are perfect…’ he replies shyly. ‘I should get going, we have work in the morning and…’ you interrupt his rambling sentence and proceeded to grab him by the shoulder in order to stop him from ending this night. ‘Don’t leave… please’ you asked with your heart racing even he could hear the sound of your blood circulating through your veins. He takes one deep breath and finally kisses you with so much force and power your knees weaken and your arms rest on his neck for support. He breaks the kiss to look into your eyes and say ‘I love you’.
You enter the front door to his apartment, with your hands locked and he smashes you against the couch. He takes off his shirt and hesitates to remove your garments since he hadn’t even asked for your consent. You could see in his eyes he was wavery so you gave him a nod and he immediately ripped off your shirt. You thought to yourself… ‘damn, that chain tattoo looks so hot… maybe I’ll look good with one too’ but shortly after your thoughts were interrupted by him pulling down your shorts. He gives you one look before he starts liking your clit relentlessly, with no intention to stop. There you were, bare on his couch with Yuta snuggled between your thighs giving you head… kinda nice ngl! Your head spins from the euphoric feeling and shortly after you came in his mouth. Suprised and shocked by your sudden reaction, you apologized as if it was something he didn’t enjoy, but he gave you one last smirk and conforted you by saying ‘you taste fucking good.’
‘Ooh fuck’ you moan as he thrusts harder into you every single time, with nothing but lewd sounds filling the room. He kept you in a missionary position, with his hands on your hips. ‘You keep moaning like that, I will thrust into you harder’ he growled, it seemed impossible for him to hit you harder. His one hand moves to your neck, holding it firmly. As you look up you see his face, smirked and all, looking at every reaction you make. He felt like you were his and no one or nothing can stop that feeling. You feel a warm wave flowing over your stomach and with one last thrust you both ejaculated simultaneously. He pulled out quickly, kissing you and simply asking ‘are you okay?’ ‘I’m okay… more than actually!’ you replied.
He then picked you up and moved you to the bedroom, where he layed you down on his dark bed sheets. You looked up to see Yuta with a towel, pajamas and toothbrush for you. ‘Do you always prepare for these type of situations?’ you ask to which he embarrassedly replied ‘I prepared it for the girl of my dreams!’ Washing off your sweat in the shower, you thought… ‘hmm, maybe I should get a tattoo…?’ You climed out the shower, wrapped yourself in the towel Yuta gave you and dried your body like never before. Heading to the bed in the set pajamas he gave you, you layed next to him. ‘I’m going to the tattoo shop tomorrow, it would mean alot if you came with me’ you softly said. His eyes widened and basically shined with happiness! ‘What do you want to get?’ he asked to which you replied ‘a cat on a scateboard…’. He was over the moon! ‘That is so cool!’ you couldn’t realize who was more excited!
That very next day, 9 pm, you were at the tattoo parlor, getting your cat tattooed near your elbow. Yuta was there, sipping his coffee and waiting for you to finish. ‘I’m done’ you said and he practically jumped out of his chair. ‘It’s so cool!’ he said with admiration towards you in his eyes! ‘I think my parents need to fuck off…’ you said and he just high fived you.
Thanks for reading, hopefully you enjoyed

Something that I've been thinking about since seeing Lily go, "When's the last time you read a fanfic with themes?" is that I'm sorry no fanfic spoke to her like one spoke to me.
There's a Shazam! movie fanfic called Drown The Echoes Out by Khrysoprase. In it, Billy is a survivor of CSA, and it is impacting his ability to integrate into a normal family, make friends and have a healthy relationship. And it is a thing of beauty. Themes? You want themes? How about the theme of goodness and badness not being inherent states you come born with but instead being something you can choose to do or not do, exemplified in how multiple main characters act and how Billy tries to process who he is? How about the theme of how trauma alters you but it doesn't make you unlovable, with every member of the main cast having been through something and still being able to find a better tomorrow? What about the theme of extending kindness and empathy towards not only others but yourself, which is what hauls multiple characters out of their downward spirals? What about the ongoing theme that it's normal and natural to have conflicted, sometimes contradictory feelings about your abuser and it doesn't mean you wanted the abuse or did anything wrong?
That fic got me to admit to myself what I went through was abuse. It got me to try therapy. And the ending fucking had me bawling because even the anger of victims is not depicted as villainous, you are not obligated to forgive, and someone having been abused before they abused you doesn't absolve them of guilt. It wasn't a Lily-style "kill your abusers!!! it's the ONLY WAY!!!", it was, "I understand why you would want to, but you don't deserve to live with the consequences of that crime, you deserve a good life" and it hit like a ton of bricks.
I'm sorry that the only fanfic Lily ever read with CSA in it were ones she wrote and not ones where victims find healing and love. It could have helped her a lot. Seeing someone be a CSA survivor whose partner loves them, is willing to wait and respects their boundaries? Beautiful. Seeing a CSA survivor's entire family come together to support them? Kept me alive in my moments of darkness. Finding a happy ending after all the pain and trauma and the long, hard process of healing? It was everything to me.
I wish she'd read something that hauled her out of her downward trajectory. I wish fandom had been to her what it is to me.
But because she's an anti and her whole thing is "if you write it you endorse it! never mention dark topics!", although that's a public facade, it resulted in her never giving fanfics like that a chance. She never sat down and read something like that because she never would allow herself to admit a fanfic that addresses CSA could have literary worth. Smut worth, sure, but not worth as a story where we only glimpse the abuse and we bear full witness to the aftermath, because that anti mindset is "depiction = endorsement", and on some level, like how many Puritans were sexual predators, she believes her bullshit even as she does the opposite.
Fanfics have themes, Lily. But you'd have to put a toe outside your comfort zone in order to find them.
she doesn't read, that's all there's to it. she has even bragged about this in more than one ocassion as if it was meant to be a good thing. she's a profoundly ignorant person who barely enjoys the art of literature as it is, but still wants to believe like she has any authority to speak on it. that's why i say any take she could have about fanfic, writers or readers, is completely moot.

Hey! I heard about an appreciation hour? I found you very recently and I gotta say I'm so happy I did because seeing your work helped me to understand that my own work doesn't need to be in the idw Sonic style to be loved. That was something I struggled with so much, and as I'm just starting to get into this new hyperfixation and come into the art scene of it I just wanted to have fun and share my ideas with likeminded people who would enjoy them. Seeing your work helps me to know that I have a shot at greatness!
You are an inspiration!
Thank you sm for the compliment! I'm flattered. And I'm so happy that you finally feel free to have fun with your own style when drawing Sonic characters!! I assure you there's a lot of people that will like your style (i certainly do!).
I personally believe that the more you enjoy the process, the better the results are, 'cause if you had fun drawing a piece, it totally shows on the piece itself (and people can see that!). So ,unless you're practicing something in specific, you should always let yourself draw the way you want to draw.
While it's great to step out of our comfort zones from time to time, i think we should prioritize our own enjoyement when it comes to making art instead of forcing ourselves to fit into what we think will be more successful.
So yeah,no one should feel like they need to fit into the IDW style for their sonic art to be appreciated. IDW is amazing but there are soo many other styles you can try with these characters. That's what makes seeing & making fanart fun.
i like to think that as long as you like what you do, there's always going to be someone out there who is going to like it too.

hi!i'm new in your account.
i'm so tired of my 3d,i want to enter the void state,as someone who's manifested nothing, who's obsessed with void, who' lazy af,who's always complains and all that shit, what you would recommend?
i would be happy to have an answer, I don't know what to do, I don't wanna live as me.
and i'm bad person, everyone hates me,i want to be loved :(
Ok long response incoming!!
If you're someone who is feeling stagnant and is looking for a way to break free from your 3D reality and enter into the Void state, I have a few tips for you.
Firstly, is to find your inner calm. It's important to be mindful and practice mindful exercises, such as meditating or even just focusing on your breath. This can help to quiet your thoughts and tap into the creative energy of the Void.
Second, take time out for yourself to relax and reflect. We often forget to take time out of our day to focus on ourselves and our inner needs. Find activities that help you relax and rejuvenate, such as walking in nature, art, reading, writing or even just having a hot cup of tea.
Thirdly, focus on harnessing your intent and visualizing your desired outcome. The Void is all about potential waiting to be realized. Spend time visualizing what it is you want to create. Get into a space of stillness and focus on sending out your intentions into the world. Believe that you can bring into existence what it is you wish to experience and attract it into your life.
Lastly, don't be afraid to take action when necessary. The Void is a creative space, and you don’t have to put it any work if you don’t want but you’re already speaking negative about yourself and habits so maybe you should to put in some work to manifest the things you desire. Be willing to step outside of your comfort zone and trust in your intuition to show you what is possible.
As for your last two statements, outside from an loa perspective, I've seen many people in similar situations where they start to feel like everyone around them hates them or don't have the same love for them that they would like. It can be a difficult situation to deal with, and trust me I would know and I’ve been here.
it is important to acknowledge that feeling of being unloved and take ownership of your own emotions - no one else is responsible for how you feel, not in a harsh way but in a way I mean that we create animosity toward ourselves. I promise no one feels towards you what you’re projecting that others feel towards you. All this is coming internally.
Second, try to shift your mindset and focus on more positive thoughts like how much you do love yourself, what you appreciate about yourself, and how you are unique. Remind yourself that everyone has faults, but that you are worth loving.
Thirdly, be kind to yourself. No one will love you more unconditionally than you can for yourself. You are a soul stuck in this body remember that, you might as well treat yourself with maximize kindness and love okay? Take the time for self-care and do something for yourself that brings you joy. Take a relaxing bath, read a good book or write in a journal. Journaling can help process your thoughts and emotions, so taking the time to write out your feelings can be beneficial in understanding your emotional state and helping address any underlying issues. I also want to add going outside and laying in the sunlight and listening to birds chirp and life’s beauty helps! I hate to minimize depression and self hatred to being solved by going outside but I promise the sunlight and earth helps from personal experience
Finally, if you feel like no one loves you, and that you are bad person, try to think of someone that does care about you and show appreciation for them. You can also try reaching out to a friend or even a mental health professional to discuss how you feel and get some guidance and support.
I know it can be hard to cope with feeling unloved, but it is possible to take steps to cope with this feeling and build better relationships with others and yourself. Remember, you are never alone and there is someone out there that cares about you. If you ever need someone to talk to, please reach out.
Now through an loa scope.
As we know law of attraction states that your thoughts and emotions are the most powerful tools for creating the life that you want. For example, if you are feeling bad about the current situation you are in, the law of attraction says that if you focus on the positive aspects of the situation, you will start to attract more of what you want.
For example, if you think to yourself “I don’t want to live as myself because everyone hates me”, try to shift your focus to why people may not hate you. Maybe you are an incredible listener or have a generous spirit. Whatever it is, focus on those qualities and start to believe in yourself.
It is also important to speak positively about yourself and the situation. It can feel silly at first but studies have shown that speaking positively about yourself is one of the most powerful tools for creating change in your life. So instead of telling yourself “I am bad person” try replacing that thought with something like “I am doing my best and I will get through this”.
As you start to focus on the positive aspects of the situation and tell yourself encouraging words, you will start to feel your energy shifting. You will become more confident in yourself and be able to take control of your life. You will know that even if people don’t always love you, you have the power to make your life something you can be proud of.
Even scientifically (long study ahead sorry I’m a psychology nerd :p)
Smiling, even when we’re feeling down, can actually be beneficial to our mental health. This phenomenon is known as the Facial Feedback Hypothesis, which is a suggested psychological phenomenon derived from the study of Charles Darwin, where he suggested that facial expressions can influence emotional states.
So how does this work exactly? According to the Facial Feedback Hypothesis, when we move certain muscles in our face, it can trigger the autonomic nervous system to react and send signals to our brain to change the emotional state we’re in. For example, when we smile, certain muscles in the face need to be contracted. This then sends signals to the brain, which in turn releases endorphins—a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and happiness—in the body. This then can make us feel better.
Studies have also been conducted to further support this hypothesis. One of these studies found that even forcing a person to smile—even though they may not be feeling happy—can lead to cognitive changes in behavior which resulted in a positive emotional state. So even if you don’t necessarily feel like smiling, if you force yourself to do it then, according to this study, it can lift your spirits.
Another study has also made the connection between facial expressions and mood. In this study, participants were asked to maintain a neutral expression while appreciating different positive and negative images. The results of the study showed that when participants were asked to maintain a neutral expression, they tended to be less impacted by the images that were presented. On the other hand, when participants were asked to smile while looking at the images, they felt their emotions were impacted more significantly. This is thought to have been because of the Facial Feedback Hypothesis, as the act of smiling activated their brain’s reward system, leading them to feel more emotionally engaged with the images they were looking at. I’m not saying smile through your misery, I’m saying there are ways to help you no for one not feel the need to hate yourself because you are so loved. I just want you to understand that you have the power to create positive change in your life and it’s a liberating feeling, and I hope that this knowledge helps you feel better when faced with difficult circumstances.
The tongue is powerful and you found the law so you can make the best of your life and be your dream self but that change starts within.
