So, I know the whole ‘vets profit off selling food’ discourse is more or less constant but I have to say, we’re selling much less food than we used to. I mean, way, way less. Mostly it’s to people that just want one or two cans of something to try, or people that forgot they were running out and need a bag asap.
And that’s because of websites where you can order your food, even prescription diets, and have them delivered. I think around 2/3 of people with their pets are ordering these foods from websites.
Because they’re cheap! Through work I only pay wholesale + tax for my pet food and Petcircle is still 20 cents cheaper than that… delivered. A vet clinic can’t compete supplying food for that price.
And yet we will still recommend these products because they are useful, even though there is no kickback or financial incentive to do so. So what is the next conspiracy argument going to be?

I'm almost $2,000 overdrawn right now. I am so fucked next month if I don't cover this. My mother is currently $152 overdrawn. My other bank card had a charge disputed, PayPal took twice the amount, and now I'm a little over $800 overdrawn on that account with no way to dispute it.
I am stressed. We have no food in our car that doesn't require a microwave, which we don't have access to until at least 6 PM, and even then it's iffy if there's a meeting going on. I am starving right now. My son is angry at me because I won't let him eat the last three packs of crackers. I'm about to consider drastic actions because I'm getting yelled at by everyone because I can't come up with enough money to feed my family, not to mention my cats.
I don't know what to do at this point. I really really need some honest to go help. Please reblog? Please help? I also have Venmo and CashApp as well: my Venmo username is @penaltywaltz and my CashApp username is $afteriwake23. At this point I'm just...I have no idea what to do, and I'm tired of being blamed for shit going wrong in my life.
EDIT: If anyone would rather help by buying stuff for us or the cats off Amazon, our wishlist is up at https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2ZPJA3X4AGIEH?ref_=wl_share

Can anyone spare some money for cat food?
We adopted a cat to try and help with my partner's mental health, but it turns out she was pregnant. We've got plenty of kibble and food for mama and also Sprinkle is fine on food, but we're going to run out of canned food for the kittens after Christmas. :(
I set up an Amazon wishlist, but also can order from chewy. I need $50 to get free shipping from chewy and can use a gift card to get things.
If you can get the gift card, my email is [email protected]
The wish list is here.
Please reblog if you can't help! It'd be appreciated. 🥺🥹
I'll share some pictures of the little ones soon!

My dog is allergic to salmon, chicken, lamb, turkey, duck, and fish mix. Also rice. It's so funny because every source I find says "beef is one of the more common foods that dogs form allergies to" but I guess she's just a trendsetter.
Anyways if you have any recommendations for beef food that doesn't have rice I'm all ears :)
That is highly unlikely. How was that diagnosed? Did you run a food trial that avoided each of those ingredients exclusively for 6 to 8 weeks and then put them back on a food containing those items and the symptoms returned? If not, know that's the only way that food allergies can be accurately diagnosed. Blood and hair tests are completely inaccurate.
Your best bet is a hydrolyzed protein diet if the pet is truly allergic to all of the above. Your vet will have told you this if you completed any testing with them.

I wanna share a resource I found to other cat lovers and caretakers, a list made by a vet who actually cares about what their cat eats! It’s a list of wet cat foods with the amount of protein, fat, carbohydrates, phosphorus, and calories per can of food.
It reveals a LOT about bullshit in pet food. The number one thing is how cat food, ideally, needs to have 0% carbs. I typically go max 10% carbs.
High protein is best, especially for elderly cats. A lot of kidney health and geriatric diets have VERY LOW PROTEIN, which will kill your cat fast. Minimum of 35% protein is good, the higher the better. Low protein is what makes elderly cats so frail and bony, no protein means no muscles.
Fat isn’t generally something to fret over unless you have an obese cat. Carbohydrate levels are a bigger concern honestly. Cats that have trouble keeping on weight should get higher fat alongside protein.
Phosphorus, NOT protein, is linked to kidney disease, specifically high phosphorus. I typically aim for under 400mg per 100kcals, but since my kitty is 15, lower is better.
There are bad additives for cats! Of course each kitty has sensitivities, but tuna should never be a staple in a cat’s diet, which disqualifies a TON of otherwise fantastic cat food, including almost all of Tiki Cat AND Weruva’s foods. Fish in general should be a minimum, as it’s also a tad addictive for cats, especially saltwater fish for the metal contents.
Calories really depend on a lot of factors, but generally the average cat needs around 150-200kcals a day iirc. Bigger cats need more, older cats may need less, kittens and nursing/pregnant mothers need more!
My general value guidelines for my picks are:
- NO TUNA
- Min 35% Protein
- Min 30% Fat
- Max 10% Carbohydrates
- Max 400mg Phosphorus per 100kcal
And here’s the lovely list!
(P.S. Cats do not belong outside unaccompanied and free to roam and kill. That’s why the average lifespan has stayed lower, and why we see constant extinctions. This isn’t up for debate. If you let your cat out to free roam you are a bad person. I am not talking about barn/farm cats, which still are an issue, but do serve a purpose on a working farm.)

Have you heard of Benevo? They seem to claim cats can eat plant-based; not sure what your opinion is?
Benevo are trying to sell you a plant-based cat food, so they of course have a vested interest in making you believe this.
There certainly are cats on plant-based diets who seem to do well with the formulated plant-based foods, but the longevity studies confirming there is no risk and no adverse effects are just not there yet. We need to know how well synthetic taurine is absorbed without animal proteins, measurements of vitamin and amino acid absorption efficiency from plant proteins, impacts in different age groups, impact on existing conditions etc. Without that research and scientific consensus it will always be a risk.
Cats are obligate carnivores, the potential is there to synthesise what they need in the long term but again, it’s very far from being established that current formulations are optimal or even safe for all cats - this is also true of plant-based dog food, though there is a bit more to go on there. If you have a companion animal you always have to put their needs before anything else, and it’s not like there aren’t options for pets we know definitely thrive on plant-based diets.
I’m not any kind of expert in animal nutrition, and even if I were I couldn’t assess your pet, their blood work or their dietary needs, and neither can anyone else you can ask this question to online. My advice would be just to consult your vet before any significant changes in the diet of any companion animal, and follow their guidance.
