5 Best Uses of POOPH
Tumblr media
Unlike enzymatic formulas that work slowly and leave their own aromas behind, POOPH products smell like nothing! It can be used on any type of surface, from pet hair and beddings to carpets and car seats. The clear spray won’t stain either. The amazing product is completely safe for pets, people and the planet. From wet dog to kitty litter, unpleasant scents will be gone in no time with POOPH.
1   Pets that Reek Do you have a labrador retriever that likes to jump into the pool, or a French bulldog that loves to roll in the mud? Cats get awful stinky too, as do hamsters and gerbils. Fortunately for all types of pet owners, POOPH was specifically engineered to fight off smells at their source.
2   Eliminates Lasting Odors  No longer do you have to worry about Charlie revisiting the same spot on the carpet or Marley returning to the scene of the crime on the sofa. POOPH successfully removes stench at its source, ensuring immediate and long-standing freshness. It is fabulous for kennels, pet carriers and bird cages.
3   Beds and Toys Oftentimes, pet mattresses and knicknacks get a bit funky. Not everything can be tossed into a washing machine. Besides, who has time to do a load every few hours? All you need is a little POOPH  to make a teddy bear nice and clean. The merchandise is 100% non-toxic too.
4   Fights Off the Odor of Kitty Litter Our feline friends tend to get stinky. Simply spray POOPH  around your sandbox to extend the life of the kitty litter. POOPH  absorbs and traps up to 30 times its own weight for urine or 100 times its own weight for water. POOPH was designed to have no effect on the clumping of the litter.
5   Gift Giving Whether it’s to bring to your mother’s house on Thanksgiving or to get some early shopping done for the holidays next month, POOPH always makes a wonderful present. Both pet owners and their friends can always freshen up their living space.

Ohh all the Studs you’ll see...🐴
As a fine Pixel horse connoisseur, when i get the offer to look at some funky shaped Horses, i cannot just say no. I must take a look!
As such, i visited this fine Store called Honest Bird's Boy Emporium in Club Meliora, expecting to see some Horses... but the sight of what i truly saw cannot be said with words alone.
Let me introduce you to our first Stud:
Tumblr media
🍭Yeah, just what the name says. Good long ears, yet a regular “Horse”, so breed all you want. Not too bad, but not too weird. 7/10.🍭
and then..
Tumblr media
oh, were getting started with a sausage. Some of us like to breed for long backs, so this just might be the Stud for you! 🌭
Continuing with..
Tumblr media
oh boy. what is this? A Horse? Surely no, you must have mistaken a horsescarecrow for a real horse. Scarehorse? Horsecrow?
anyways, with regular sized legs we walk to..
Tumblr media
Chonk. With beautiful eyes, that love to look, this stylish Horse might just capture your and your Mares heart! and more
Tumblr media
though if your Mare prefers stronger boys.. well lads, this one takes neck training seriously. Friends don’t let Friends skip neck day. 👀
seriously, did you put weights on this poor horse since foalhood, just for him to grow strong in neck? Well it worked.
continuing..
Tumblr media
ojghsdsd sdoh ouughhh Baby boy i love you. He truly deserves his Place as the Mascot of his own fanclub..
his wrinkly snout might not be just from the smell of his onion flank alone...🧅🧅🧅
Tumblr media
UHM dear shopkeeper? Please don’t put Toys of horses in your shop. This is obviously a Toy animal that had its head ripped off and a Horse toy head glued back on, hoping no one would notice.
Tumblr media
you really think you can fool us?
Toys aside, the next fellow... is certainly shaped.
Tumblr media
like a Brick. yeah. Well, lets look at the next hors-
Tumblr media
oh yeah! A Champagne colored little Hotdog. Imagine these little legs riding you into glorious Battle. A shining, beautiful knight waving their flag and lance on a truly amazing steed. I love you, stubby Champ-ion.
Tumblr media
well this guy... yeah. Don’t look to long or he will cut you up, on accident or not. Petting not advised.
Tumblr media
OHJDSAIDA ouughhh.. my head.. thiccqué .. with such a good, fat and solid head, B.O.B. Grade A Beef will win not only Beefy shows, but also has won my heart..
and last but not least:
Tumblr media
uh oh.
ah, uh, yeah. i think this horse has anxiety :(
As mentioned before, you can find these Monsters Horses in Honest Bird's Boy Emporium at Club Meliora! Give it a look, the prices are from community, for community and quite affordable! (There’s actually even more studs there! Small little Zebras 🦓 and a  blonde one included! ) If you want the shop to add more studs, you can even purchase a legendary golden Onion..
now, if you’ll excuse me, i want to look at Beef...
(Game is Horse Isle 3)

Makoto Naegi Headcanons
It’s Mister Makoto’s birthday today! I know around this time of year I might try and post a drabble or a one-shot or something, but honestly I’m a little exhausted and busy at the same time. I get a break in the week after next, so naturally all of my professors are trying to push their stuff into the time before. Yay for me! Not.
Anyway, in the absence of a big birthday story, would you perhaps accept some headcanons about him instead? I like to think that they’re pretty good, haha.
* Sleeps curled up. You can see it in the anime — he tends to pull himself in a little bit to get comfy. Many theorize that this is because of having to share a bed with Komaru on family vacations, as she tends to starfish rather than give him any space. Even when he’s sleeping alone, you can usually find him curled up in a whole bunch of soft blankets.
* Tends to need time to gather his thoughts when things get complex. His mom would refer to this as “buffering”. In order to properly explain himself, he needs to sort through the information and what he’s going to say to convey it before he says it. Otherwise, he can get jumbled up and get far too ahead of himself, making it more difficult for others to understand.
* More of an extrovert than an introvert. If he can, he would prefer to spend time with people. He finds other people’s company more pleasurable and comfortable than being on his own all the time. Usually, if he’s going to do any sort of activity, he likes to do it with someone else. Going on walks, playing video games, watching TV, and shopping are all things he prefers to do with someone else at his side. Sometimes multiple people! He’s always happy to have lots of loved ones around.
* A bit shy about public displays of affection at first, but will grow to like them much more as he grows to know that person. When he first became close with people like Aoi and Sayaka, their hugs and hand holding took him by surprise. Slowly but surely he grew comfortable with them, but it took some time. Really for him, it’s just about making sure that things are friendly and comfortable on both sides. He likes to know how deep into that sort of thing people like to get, and then he will usually get comfortable engaging in such a way. People he knows less get lighter hugs, for example. Someone he knows well, though? Big hugs. Strong hugs. Break your ribs hugs.
* Laughs easily. He’s one of those people who just laughs at most things because hey, laughter and smiles are much better than anything else, right? People find him pretty easy to get along with for this reason. His general joy is so infectious that on a day that he isn’t laughing, everyone around him can feel it. Some people even note that it’s kind of like feeling an upsetting energy around them as they try to go about their day.
* Loves animals of pretty much all types. It’s why he joined the Animal Rearing Club when he was in Junior High. He knows dogs, cats, and small rodents best, but he’s also familiar with rabbits, snakes, and birds too. He’s a frequent pet sitter for friends as a result. The animals tend to like him due to his gentle and kind nature. He can sometimes even get wild animals to grant him their trust, much to the surprise of onlookers.
* His favourite number is five. His reasoning behind that? It’s a good, clean number to add or subtract from other numbers. It is profoundly easy to count and multiply by fives. Plus, he was born of the fifth! It seems only natural to him that he have it as his favourite number. It really is as simple as that!
* He’s always wanted to get married and be a dad. Is it any surprise that he sees himself as having that sort of common lifestyle? That being said, he’s always had a big heart with extra love to share. He’d love to be able to share it with someone else until death do them part. Furthermore, he adores the idea of nurturing new life. Something about children has just always (pardon the joke) felt very hopeful to him. He thinks he’d maybe like to have two or three kids of his own, but ultimately would settle with whatever his partner likes.
* Tends to wear mismatched socks. It’s a superstition from his childhood. When he was little, he was almost certain that mismatched socks made him “extra lucky”. Somehow, it ended up carrying into adulthood, but now he mostly just does it out of habit. It’s especially good as he slowly gains more and more funky pairs, as the mixes and matches get funnier. I imagine the lack of match drives Kyoko just a little crazy.
* Likes his coffee super sweet. He’s one of those people who’s probably got like a crap ton of whipped cream and toppings on each of his coffees, which are usually pumped full of flavouring. You could probably give him decaf but set up the same way, and he wouldn’t notice. He’d be far too hopped up on all of the sugar and have all the energy he needs.

love/hate songs
Since 8tracks is messed up and playmoss is gonna disappear and Spotify doesn't have many songs, I’m posting some of my playlists here. This is a list of songs about love/hate relationships for pairings. Enemies to lovers, tsundere personalities, hero/villain couplings, opposites attract, loving someone you know you shouldn't. This list is several years old so the songs are older and kinda ‘scene.’
Major trigger warnings for the lyrics of these songs. Some songs have violent lyrics. This playlist romanticizes conflict.

HEY do you maybe have like an oc page or could you tell me something about all your ocs because i'm Interested and you have my full attention :eyes:
AHSJDKGLHL that's so sweet i'm nfjghl???? i don't have an oc page bc i'm the embodiment of an old man being given an iphone after 50 years of using a rotary phone but !!! i can yell abt them a bit aaa thank you for asking abt them 🥺🥺💚
i put everything under the cut bc dear god i have a lot to say abt my kids and i'm not gonna make everyone scroll through that HHHHHH haw 🤠🤠
elliot fletcher
- he's my deputy in fc5!! he's from waverly in iowa and he's just...very tired nfjfkhl give my poor man a break
- everytime his radio crackles he ages 10 years and if it's john talking add another 10 years
- he keeps the three heralds alive but he doesn't care abt joseph <3
- gets in trouble bc he's impulsive af nfjghl when jacob is close to the cage?? ram his face in the bars. when john leans like rlly close in the confession scene?? headbutt 😌🙏🏼
- the only people who know abt his past are earl, grace, faith and john, the rest just kinda speculate and elliot lets them believe what they want bc not only does he rlly not want ppl to know the actual truth, it's also very funny to listen to the stuff they can come up with
- speaking of faith he often seeks her for advice and sometimes they get high together and he gets teary eyed bc she's just... very nice to him and when all you see everyday is violence it's overwhelming to be shown a little bit of kindness 🥲🙏🏼
- he's in love with john but also he'd kick him across the county if he could but also he'd give his life for him
- after the bombs and all he unlocks his final form and becomes A Husband™, complete with a beard, a scarf and bad jokes that make john want to officially marry him so he can divorce his ass
- fun fact i came up with the name elliot fletcher bc i thought it sounded neat but recently i found out there's a trans actor called elliot fletcher too??? like what were the odds ngl that's so cool
carter quill
- this is my character in the marvel dnd game my brother is dming!!
- his parents are peter quill and kitty pryde and he inherited his mom's powers (so he can become immaterial and stuff uwu) and his dad's tiny pebble brain~
- he grew up on a ship with the guardians so his family is just... a bunch of uncles, one of which is a tree
- he's part of an initiative called the peacekeepers with isaaq cage (luke cage's and jessica jones' son), finneas "zorn" reeves (brock rumlow's and sinthea shmidt's son), lu "highway star" khan (the mandarin's son), alexis "hex" pythagoras (doctor strange's protégé) and ev-lin (ronan the destroyer's daughter who also happens to be carter's bully when they were 11 HHHHHH)
- everyone agrees that carter is just... a puppy. a little labrador. so overexcited. head empty. he doesn't know what's going on but he's having fun with his friends and that's what matters <3
- he died once and went to hell for like 66 years bc he held a bomb while it was exploding but he got better and he doesn't remember most of his time in hell but also he's a lil traumatised
- he wears cute skirts sometimes and also froggie themed clothes 🥰🥰 he's terrible at applying nail polish and it ends up smudged most of the time bc he can't sit still for more than two minutes without going insane but he still likes it
- he has a pet bird called ink!! he thought it was a nice name bc his last name is quill so u know,,, ink,,, quill,,,, he inherited his dad's terrible humor also
- he's fruity and has a big fat crush on one of his teammates 😳😳👉🏼👈🏼
- he strictly refuses to kill, so he uses stunt energy guns and a three section staff to fight!! he accidentally killed someone once and threw up
- he knows asl and is fluent in it!! he's also very bad at reading measurements when cooking (and reading in general) so he relies on their proto-ai, dadji, to help him cook and he listens to audiobooks a lot!!
- idk what else to say abt him except like two games ago he was in the hospital bc lu got hurt and he wanted to get him muffins from a coffee shop across the streets but he panicked when faced with the selection so he bought one of each and came back to the hospital room with like,,,, twenty muffins
- i found this pic of his face claim and it honestly just radiates his vibe so here have it
Tumblr media
thorgran galvish
- he's my dwarf enchanter from another homebrew dnd game!! in this universe (and maybe others idk shit abt actual dnd HHHH forgive me) enchanter dwarves are lowkey enslaved bc of their rare link with magic
- thorgran blew up a wall and ran away to the surface so now he's a fugitive and he's constantly on the run uwu trust issues ensue
- he loves the sky so much?? especially at night?? he knows abt constellations, but he thinks they're just whatever you see in the stars and doesn't know there are like,,, actual constellations so he sits on the roof of a tall building sometimes and finds his own constellations
- he also tries to draw them but he rlly sucks at it aslkdsgl that doesn't stop him from filling his journal with little stars and drawings!!
- during my very first game with him he found his rival, who turned out to be a 16 years old teenager?? millennial/gen z rivalry
- agh i don't have much abt him yet bc i've only just started to play him but he's my beefiest boy and also a dilf 🥰🥰
theadric "elder" montajay
- yet another character from the same universe as thorgran, but this time it's a funky little halfling bard
- his instrument is the violin!! he tried every other instrument and his mom was very supportive despite how bad he was at all of them. his community was raided and his father died, so he inherited his violin and that turned out to be the only instrument he could play
- took his love of the economy to the next level when he decided to fuck every gang leader he could find to control their operations and ruin their organizations so the money they hoarded could be put back in circulation
- accidentally fell in love with a half-orc gang leader and was abt to tell him the truth abt what he was doing but was exposed by the first person he'd cheated so he had to run without explaining himself to his lover smh ://
- "i don't wanna fall in the slutty bard cliché," i say before immediately giving elder the tightest leather pants and opening his shirt to show his majestic chest hair.
- surprisingly good with kids?? anyone younger than him who looks sad becomes His Child and he turns into a lil mama, tasting the food of an inn first to assure it's not poisoned, giving hugs, soft shit like that ngl he's just a mom 😔😔
- we abandoned the game he was in but we left off when he'd just escaped a dwarven prison with his new child and others owo anyway slutty bard with chest hair?? that's just the witcher's jaskier
scylla
- my gay pirate lady!! i don't have much abt her either bc AAA BRAINROT but !!! i still love her very much
- she's a hybrid between a human and a psaarinch (fish folks in our homebrew universe uwu) and she looks very human except she has like shark abilities?? she can smell blood, taste with her skin, breathe underwater for like two hours or smth, sharper teeth,,
- she started off as a privateer but like what was the kingdom gonna do?? track her down to make sure everything she did was legal?? nah man she got that sweet fleet and became a pirate
- she beats men up in inns and gives their wives a good time <3
- she's very close to her crew and they're kinda just a big family
- she fights with those s-shaped staffs?? but they're actually blades ngfhl she's very agile and looks like she's dancing when she's actually fighting
- fun fact she's my second shark oc the first one was called maito and she was a yellow lantern in a dc game we did (the main difference between them is that maito loved men while scylla is very much a lesbian 😌🙏🏼)
i have like so many more of them but that's already such a long post and i don't wanna do too much NGL if u wanna know more hmu i'll yell some more 😎😎🙏🏼🙏🏼

A Night Out
By
Mikayla MacPherson
She slowly opened her eyes and sat up, rubbing the sleep from her eyes with a dainty hand. She sat there for a minute as life flowed back into her. She began stretching and yawned before getting out of bed. As she passed her dresser on the way to the bathroom she paused just long enough to turn the television on.
In the bathroom she took off her pajamas and got into the shower, luxuriating under the flow of hot water. Wrapping herself in a bunny towel she finished her routine while listening to the news. As she was brushing her teeth, she heard a news report about a highly charged criminal case about a local university boy who had brutally raped a girl outside of a bar.
“The jury has ruled “not guilty” in the case of Charles Lewiston, the local Branson University quarterback and son of assistant district attorney, Geoffrey Lewiston. Lewiston, 21, is being scouted by the NFL as a potential first round draft pick for the 2019 NFL season led the Branson Knights to a champion season for two years running. Back to you in the studio.”
She stood there listening to the news report, rage building inside of her like a fire building to a flashpoint. She shook as she thought about the new report. She had been following this case and two criminal cases for weeks now. She burned with anger as she thought about the fact that women were rarely believed in these cases. They were mocked. Called liars, their lives ruined. All while the men who committed these acts got off with usually little more than a slap on the wrist.
She finished in the bathroom and back into her sleeping area, where she pulled on a matching pair of black satin panties and bra. She thought about what to wear tonight, she was going out for the first time in a while. Perhaps to get a drink. She could use one. No, she needed one. She pulled out her makeup and thought about what colors and style she would go with for the night. She went through the routine without thought, thinking about where she should go to get a drink.
Her clothing was a large assortment of goth attire. Looking through them she decided on a little black miniskirt, crop top, and black satin opera gloves. She quietly got dressed, looking to make sure that her clothes were flawless, then pulled on her knee-high boots that were shined to a mirror polish. When she was finished, she looked at herself in a large full-length mirror in the corner.
Her skin, nearly alabaster in color clashed with ruby red lipstick and red nails. Her hair was a silky black cut into a pixie cut and framed a thin waifish face with large dark eyes. She was thin and stood at just barely five foot. She looked more like a 14-year-old than her actual age, which she didn’t really mind. Her mother and sisters also looked young as well. She smiled and then turned away from the mirror.
She grabbed her purse, a little backpack affair in the shape of a black bunny and grabbed her keys off the dresser by the tv. Throwing on a black leather midriff jacket, she walked out the door to her studio and locked it. She smiled sweetly and waved at her elderly neighbor, who was just coming home from her social group. Her neighbor smiled back and wished her a good evening and, like always to be careful. She just smiled and nodded.
She skipped down the three flights of stairs to the ground floor and paused just long enough to drop an envelope containing money for her rent into the office drop slot. Then she happily left her building and went out into the early evening chill. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She loved this time of year, when the air was chilly, but before it turned cold and the snow came. She looked right then left and crossed the street.
She did not have a destination in mind. She would just let her feet carry her along. She paused at the doorway where she saw a cat sitting and held out her hand. The cat looked at her for a second then came over, sniffed her outstretched hand and began purring as she petted it. She knew this cat and stopped nearly every night to pet it and it had grown fond of her. A soft smile came to her face as she remembered her own cat that she had for many years. She wanted another one, but the apartment where she lived did not allow pets. She took off her back pack and pulled out a small tin of sardines that she got just for this occasion. There was no better way to make friends with a cat she thought.
Once her visit was completed and she tossed the tin into a recycle bin left out on the sidewalk, she continued her nights outing. Soon she could smell the overlapping smells of the little food stalls, restaurants, bars and microbreweries that signaled her approach to “the strip,” as the locals called it. The strip was about three blocks of funky little shops, bars, eateries and other such businesses that supported the local university kids’ need for fun and diversion from the pressing academic studies. It was often boisterous, even during the week and only seemed to ever slow down during midterms and finals, though it did slow quite a bit during the summer break.
She entered the first bar and looked around. No, she thought, not where she wanted to be, then moved on. She poked her head into several bars before she found one that was what she was looking for. The name on the window s “The Red Light”, heavy bass beats thumped her ears and she could smell the bar food, booze and even the people. She went inside into an interior that was illuminated by black lights and moved towards the bar and ordered a drink. She looked at the list of drink on the chalkboard over the liquor shelves, and finally let the bartender pick for her. It was something fruity and sticky sweet, but it was tasty she thought moving toward a table in the far back of the place. She drank her drink while looking around at the guys in the bar. It was crowded for that time of the week. She was sure that she would get lucky tonight.
Then she saw him, when he walked in the door, accompanied by a small entourage. One could be forgiven for thinking him a celebrity the way others acted as he walked by. She smiled as he looked in her direction. Acting shy, she looked away and then cut her eyes back to him before smiling and acting like he caught her in the act.
He got his drink and began walking towards her. She noticed that not only did he have a beer, but he also had the same drink she just finishing. He came over and offered her the drink. She thought to herself that he probably spiked it but took it anyway. Taking that as his queue, he sat down and began talking to her.
She took a long sip of the drink and he watched her with interest as she did. Maybe a little too much interest she thought. They continued to talk, and she would sip on the drink and he would watch her closely as she did. She began to feel warm and she indicated she wanted to go outside for a walk. She got up and headed in the direction of the door. A glance in the mirror showed that he began to follow her. She was going to get lucky tonight.
She walked slowly but steadily, past the bars and late-night eateries until she came across a path that led to the university campus through a wooded park area. She turned right and onto the path. A quick glance over her shoulder revealed he was still following her. She looked backed and waved at him then pretended to ignore him. His pace increased and closed the distance between the two.
“Hey,” he said.
She continued to ignore him.
“Hello?”
She looked back at him and made an irritated face, and slowly increased her pace.
“HEY! I’m trying to talk to you.” Again, she ignored him and started walking faster. She looked back with a look of fear on her face.
That was enough to anger him. He jogged forward and snatched her arm and snatched her around to face him. He smiled at the look of terror in her face.
“HEY BITCH. I SAID I’M TALKING TO YOU,” he screamed.
Slowly she looked up at his face and into his eyes. She began to smile, causing the hair on the back of his head to stand up. The first fingers of cold fear began to course through his veins. He let go and stepped back from her. Her smile continued to spread becoming very shark like. Very… hungry.
Slowly her ruby red lips parted to reveal sharp serrated teeth. He noticed that her eyes had grown black, her nails had lengthened into talons and her ear was not pointed and jutting through her hair. Icy fear slammed into him and he started back peddling away from her.
“What the fuck are you? Get away from me,” he shouted. Fear cracking in his voice.
Silently she continued walking towards him.
“GET AWAY FROM ME YOU FUCKING FREAK!” He stumbled over a root and fell backwards onto his back side. As he began to attempt to crab walk backwards, a wet spot began spreading in the crotch of his pants. His screams changed into sobs as she continued advancing.
Then, in a blur she leapt onto him, driving him to the ground. Her head dove at his neck and tore a chunk out. Blood began gushing from the wound as his sobs turned to a gurgling noise. She slowly chewed and then swallowed as the life ebbed away out of his eyes. She bent down and drank deeply of the blood flowing like a faucet, the fear she had instilled sweetening it with an intoxicating flavor. Her kill. Her right to drink. Her right to his life essence.
When she drank her fill, she tore at a thigh until she ripped nearly the entire muscle out. Satisfied with her prize, she turned and made a loud barking sound that struck a primeval fear in anyone who might have heard it. From the west, what sounded like a flock of large birds approached, all echoing the barking, as if answering. Six dark shadows dropped to the ground in a blur almost to fast for a human eye to see.
The largest of them stepped forward out of the shadow enveloping it. She looked at the newcomer and lowered herself in submission. The larger looked very similar to her, not surprising since this was the matriarch, while the other smaller ones, where her younger siblings. The matriarch crept forward and examined the body, then began devouring it. After a minute she too made a barking sound and the smaller siblings rushed in mass.
When they had eaten their fill, they stepped back from the remains and cleaned off all traces of their meal. Then they began to disperse into the shadows. Back to their own homes, and their own hunting territories. Next time, one of them would make the kill.
She sat back quite contentedly and full, her features slowly returning to their normal visage. When she was ready she stood up, stepped over the remains and walked back to the strip. She continued until she came to her favorite club. She was happy. She had gotten lucky, made the kill, eaten some of the choicest part, and now she could have fun dancing until the club closed for the night. As she danced, she decided that since it had been such a good night, she should get laid as well.
“A grisly discovery in Daltrey Park this morning. The remains of local Branson University quarterback Charles Lewiston were discovered. According to one on-scene officer, the body looked as if it had quote, been torn to pieces by a pack of wild animals who ate their share and left the remains, unquote. The body was identified by Lewiston’s father and assistant DA Geoffrey Lewiston. Lewiston, who was led the Branson Knight’s football team to two separate championship victories, had been found ‘not guilty’ of the rape a former Branson University freshman just yesterday morning. Police, however have stated that Lewiston’s death is not related. Back to you in the studio.”
She sat on her bed watching the news story. Her beautiful and delicate face lit up like a beacon and her lips pulled back into a frightening smile. Perhaps that would be some justice for the poor girl, she thought to herself, after all… it was for her.
She finished getting ready for the evening. She waved a friendly hello to her neighbor and then left her building on a mission of feeding a certain cat.
Behind her, another elderly resident watched her go. Age had creased her face, and bent her spine, but her eyes were sharp. As the door closed behind the young girl, the lady crossed herself, and said a prayer in Russian. Then turned around and whispered to herself as she shuddered.
“Chertova nechestivaya demonicheskaya suka” - Fucking unholy demonic bitch.

Nantes: My favorite places in my favorite city
Yesterday, I spent the day with my friend Laura, an au pair from Colombia that I met in my French class. Since Laura only arrived in Nantes several weeks ago, we decided that it would be a good idea for me to take her on a little tour of this incredible city. As the two of us were walking around on an unseasonably warm and sunny February day, I was reminded of why I find this city so beautiful and why it’s so special to me.
I loved seeing the look of awe on Laura’s face as we explored all of Nantes’ wonders, and it reminded me so much of what it was like to set foot in this city for the first time. When I first moved here, this city absolutely terrified me. I, a girl from a small town in Massachusetts, initially felt uneasy around all the hustle and bustle. The whirling and crowded city felt so alien and foreign to me, and at first, I feared that I would never adjust. However,  I could not have been more wrong. After some initial hesitation, I fell in the love with Nantes; and when I fell, I fell hard and fast. This city has taught me so much about the beauty of embracing your fears and welcoming the unknown into your life.
I may not be a born-Nantaise, but within the past few months, this city has become my home. Before I found my host family last April, I had never even heard of this place. Now, several months later, I can’t imagine my life without it. Since I moved here, this city has come to mean so much to me and had become very dear to my heart. Perhaps it’s because of the city’s stunning architecture or rich culture and history. Perhaps it’s because of its bustling, vibrant nature or its abundance of places to explore and things to do. Maybe it’s because last year, this city welcomed me with open arms and made me feel a sense of belonging, even though I was thousands of miles away from everything I had ever known. It might be because this city has been the setting of many of my firsts, and has been the backdrop to so many new experiences and adventures. Perhaps it’s because I have found a family here and have created strong friendships that I know will last a lifetime. Maybe it’s because my friends and I have made memories in every corner of this city, or because I can’t look at a single thing in this place without being reminded of happy memories and feeling a wave of bittersweet nostalgia. It breaks my heart to know that I will have to leave this city one day, but I am comforted by the knowledge that I will certainly be back to Nantes to visit many times in the coming years. Who knows, maybe this city is where I’ll raise my children one day; I love the sound of that.
As you can see, Nantes is without a doubt one of my favorite cities. Of course, I know that I’m quite biased on this, but there are so many reasons to love this place. I highly recommend this destination to any and all travelers; I bet that you’ll come to love this city just as much as I do.
Still not convinced? Let me tell you about my favorite places in Nantes, and I’m sure that by the time you finish reading this, you’ll be on Skyscanner booking a flight.
1) Le Château des Ducs de Bretagne
How incredible is it that I walk by an actual castle every day on my way to French class? This castle is a must-see for any travelers visiting Nantes. You can walk around the courtyard on the inside, have a picnic on the grass on a sunny day, walk around the wall of the castle and be rewarded with a beautiful view, or even go down the slide attached to the side of the structure! Just across the tram tracks lies The Water Mirror. During the summer, lots of people love coming here to splash in the fountain or sunbath on the nearby grass. But, when the water is completely still, you can see a beautiful reflection of the castle in it. Within the castle, there are two museums: Le Musée d’Histoire Urbaine and another museum for temporary expositions. Several weeks ago, some friends and I went to an exposition called “Cimarron,” which was a colorful, beautiful, and moving contemporary photography exhibit.

2.) Le Musée des Beaux Arts
If you love art or just enjoy museums, be sure to check at Le Musée des Beaux-Arts. The best part? On the first Sunday of each month, the majority of museums in Nantes are totally free of charge!
Tumblr media
3.) La Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Nantes
The architecture of this cathedral is nothing short of stunning! This was one of the first places in Nantes that I visited with my host family when I arrived, and it was also the place that my friend Ellie and I used as our meeting spot the first time that we met up, so the thought of the cathedral and the memories I’ve made there always brings a smile to my face.

4) Le Jardin des Plantes
Le Jardin des Plantes is easily my absolute favorite place in Nantes. I could write pages about why I love it so much. This beautiful botanical garden, which is open to the public free of charge, is complete with a playground, walking trails, a cafe, greenhouses, flower and herb gardens, lots of trees, fountains, sculptures, lots of birds, a merry-go-round, and even a goat petting zoo. The garden is absolutely gorgeous; filled with brightly colored blossoms and greenery everywhere, it’s like a little slice of paradise. When the weather is nice, it’s my favorite place to go for a walk, have a picnic with friends, grab a pain au chocolat at the nearby boulangerie and sit in the sunshine, or find a shady bench to read or journal. Au Pair Super Tip: This is the perfect place to take your host kids! They’ll love the playground, the merry go round, and the petting zoo, and walking around here is a great way for the kids to play outside and get some exercise.

5) Shopping
Nantes is the perfect city for those who love to shop. There’s an abundance of chic fashion stores, vintage shops, and adorable boutiques. When visiting Nantes, be sure to check out Le Passage Pommeraye, a beautiful shopping center built in the 1800s.

6) Restaurants:
In Nantes, there’s certainly no shortage of great cafes and restaurants. Looking for a delicious croissant, baguette, or macaron? You can find all that and more in one of the many different boulangeries or patisseries. On the search for a crêpe or a galette? In any city in the Brittany region, you’re sure to find tons of creperies. Want to grab coffee with a friend and spend hours chatting in a cute café? Try Le Select, a great cafe with a vintage vibe, or La Maison d’Elise, a cat cafe. Yes, a cafe that doubles as a cat shelter! (How adorable.) Even if your searching for healthy, vegan food, Nantes has you covered! In fact, two of my favorite places in Nantes or the TreeHouse, a vegan café/grocery store, and Totem, an incredible vegan restaurant with the most amazing vegan desserts I’ve ever had.

7)  Le Jardin Japonais
If you’re looking to find some more nature when in the city, look no further than Le Jardin Japonais (The Japanese Garden) located on L’ile de Versailles. Filled with red maple trees, walking paths, streams, bamboo plants, and even rocky waterfalls, this little garden is another great place to spend a sunny, Autumn day.
Tumblr media
8) Architecture:
I have to say, I love the architecture in the Bretagne area, especially here in Nantes. Whenever I’m walking around the city, I can’t help but look up to stare at the buildings around me. I mean, just look at how pretty these buildings are! Whether it be in Nantes, Paris, or Toulouse, my favorite part of French architecture are the balconies that adorn the historic buildings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
9) Les Machines de l'île
“The Machines of the Isle of Nantes” is an artistic exposition located in the former shipyards of Nantes. Several artists created many different gigantic, robotic animals. The most famous of these robotic works of art is the Elephant, a 12-meter high creation that passengers can climb aboard and be taken on a 45 ride around the area. Just watch out: The Elephant will spray water from its trunk when you least expect it! (Take it from my host kid; who got absolutely drenched the last time we visited.)
Tumblr media
10) Le Lieu Unique
One of the coolest places in Nantes is the Lieu Unique. While the building actually used to be a factory for the French biscuit brand LU, it now serves as a location for a vibrant cultural center with an abundance of things to do. Visitors can eat in the cafe or restaurant, shop in the bookstore, grab a drink in the bar, get a massage or relax in the sauna in the spa, see a contemporary art exposition, or go to one of many different performances, concerts or live music events.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
11) Le Tour Bretagne
One of my absolute favorite places in Nantes is the Tour Bretagne. While it may just look like a skyscraper filled with administrative offices from the outside, this tower has a secret: For one euro, you can ride the elevator to the top floor (over 30 stories high!). There, you’ll find a funky, bird-themed bar called “Le Nid” (“The Nest”), which is one of my favorite places to go out with friends. After getting a drink and hanging out in one of their egg-shaped chairs, you can go out on the balcony and see the most incredible view of Nantes. Whether you see it during the day, as the sun is setting, or late at night, this view is always sure to stun. From the top of this tower, you can see the entire city from a bird’s eye view, which makes all the buildings (Even the cathedral!) look tiny enough to be doll furniture. I love spending time on the balcony and looking out over this city, as it reminds me about why this beautiful city is so special to me, the countless memories I have made here, and why love Nantes so fiercely.

tagged by @sardoniyx THANK U HUN XX
when you have cereal, do you have more milk than cereal or more cereal than milk?: I categorically Do Not have cereal. ...but it’s pretty much been milk in the past because i like the cereal much more than the milk.
do you like the feeling of cold air on your cheeks on a wintery day?: i mean i think i did sometimes when cold weather was a novelty rather than the five-year-long winter that this current winter in london feels like
how do you take your coffee/tea?: coffee with a shitload of sugar and milk and sometimes flavourings ... tea with milk and one sugar.
do you keep plants?: nah
what artistic medium do you use to express your feelings?: writing (poetic prose/poetry if it’s a particular brand of romantic/romance-adjacent feeling) ... sometimes drawing
do you like singing/humming to yourself?: yeeeees
what’s something that made you smile today?: oh man. i haven’t had a good day. but something that made me INTERNALLY SMILE was this excellent message @cheapskate-bleeding-queer sent me :)
what’s your favorite pasta dish?: spaghetti/penne with GARLIC and CHEESE and sometimes CHILLI and (usually but not a necessity) a meat like chicken or cured meats, in a cream/egg sauce UGHHH GOD. also bolognese is pretty Rad. with heaps of herbs/spices. unghhhhhh
what’s your favorite eye color?: i don’t know if i have one? my first fave as a kid was green. i used to not think very highly of dark brown eyes (which i have) bc it’s basically never lauded in popular media etc but then i got crushes on a series of guys with dark eyes and now i see they’re PRETTY RAD TOO
what’s your favorite bubblegum flavor?: peppermint/spearmint
what is your opinion of socks? do you like wearing weird socks? do you sleep with socks? do you confine yourself to white sock hell? really, just talk about socks: SOCKS ARE FUN AND NICE AND WARM. I LIKE SOCKS WITH FUNKY/CUTE DESIGNS. wearing mismatched socks is FUN. socks that fit poorly are deeply bad. i don’t sleep with socks. i used to when i was a kid.
what’s your fave pastry?: anything with cheese and bacon. at work they have these cheese and bacon turnovers which are kind of puff pastry and they are the most fucking delicious thing ever every time i eat one i’m like jesus fucking christ how can something taset this good oh man
tell us about your pet peeves!: when people put their bags on seats on public transport and DON’T MOVE THEM when others approach to sit! when people sit on the outer seat of a two-seater on a bus/train and DON’T MOVE IN OR GET UP WHEN SOMEONE WANTS TO SIT! When someone is playing music through SPEAKERS in a PUBLIC PLACE and they are not some kind of busker/paid musician and especially if it’s shit music! people who roar down busy/populated/suburban/urban areas in EXTREMELY LOUD CARS AND MOTORCYCLES WHY? is this necessary? if it isn’t -- DO YOU FEEL REALLY SECURE ABOUT YOUR EGO? IS YOUR JUNK MONUMENTOUS? IS YOUR DICK SO BIG YOU CAN SWING IT ROUND LIKE A FIRE HOSE? also, fuckwits who open conversations with me by asking “excuse me, what part of china are you from”. if anyone presumes my ethnicity again (i don’t care if they’re correct) i’m going to make up some bullshit like “i am white, with a rare strain of jaundice” or just speak german to them and pretend i don’t know english at all.
think of a piece of jewelry you own: what’s it’s story? does it have any meaning to you?: a gold/enamel pendant that’s a disc with a hole in the middle that looks like a segmented colour wheel. i bought it in the Exploratorium gift shop in San Francisco, I was not having a great time and bought it to cheer myself up a bit? and i turned it into a symbol of overcoming unpleasant thought spirals or something like that, in my head.
do you have a favorite coffee shop? describe it!: i like the tom n toms chain in sydney. i go to the one in central or the one in town hall and i’ve been there so many times with so many people and have basically always had a great time, drinking the peppermint hot chocolate. many hours of bitching/moaning about my love life has been spent there. it’s been great. i was even there with an ex once but the place CANNOT BE RUINED because i’ve also been there with like all of my best friends. and it’s always a stellar experience. yum. also, brainwave cafe which was right near the design building at my uni. a cute aesthetic, nice food, and i love the proximity to my alma mater, and i had nice experiences at uni overall, therefore GOOD ASSOCIATIONS, etc.
do you trust your instincts a lot?: i did, but lately they seem to have gone on a leave of absence so ........... like ........... yeah i dunno.
what food do you think should be banned from the universe?: anything that necessitates inhumane/cruel slaughter or treatment of animals e.g. foie gras, lobster that had to be boiled alive, whales killed by being dragged through the sea by harpoons, those sadistic dishes from asia (don’t google if you don’t want to learn about actually graphic/disturbing mistreatment of animals)
do you like buying CDs and records? what was the last one you bought?: records yes because i have a record player and kind of want to be a Vinyl Person because aesthetic and i hate having money apparently HAHAH. the last one i bought was Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life by The Wombats -- I preordered it -- there were a series of fiascos about the delivery but I think I’ll have it in my hands by the end of the week FINALLY
think of a person. what song do you associate with them?: literally anything by the killers (you know who you are). Waiting For The End by Linkin Park reminds me of my first bf (though not in a bad way).
do you like poetry? what are some of your faves?: yes, but i have very specific taste. i like Kelsey Rakes and a bunch of others whom I found on deviantART back when that was my life.
what’s the stupidest gift you’ve ever received?: a couple times i was regifted the gifts that i got those people in the first place HAHAH not a hug deal though
what’s winter like where you live?: currently london. from the perspective of a sydneysider, it is ....... ......... GREY. you wake up and if you have a commitment like work, you just push through. if you don’t and you’re in the house, you open the curtains and see how the light level inside basically doesn’t change and you think WHAT IS THE POINT OF BEING ALIVE. also in the middle of winter the sun literally sets BEFORE FOUR P.M. WHAT THE EVERLOVING FUCK. the cold isn’t too bad, but the lack of sunlight is depressing. on the other hand, mulled wine is nice.
what are your favorite board games?: INNOVATION, HANDS DOWN. i also really like Monikers.
is there anything you should be doing right now but aren’t?: i don’t think so ... sleeping, maybe?
are you in the minion hateclub or fanclub?: in isolation they’re pretty cute and in movie context they’re funny but oversaturation/inappropriate usage makes them a little tiresome. also i read a tweet of minion smut and it was hilarious and i loved it.

are there any artistic movements you particularly enjoy?: i rather enjoy dadaism as a concept ... man there’s one i think is on the tip of my brain but i... can’t think of it ...? i like luminism. i like warhol and lichtenstein’s pop art. roccoco is fun.
talk about your one of you favorite cities: y’know, i do like london. i love the shit-ton of theatres, the fact that musicians/performers ACTUALLY COME HERE, the WONDERFUL ABUNDANCE OF LIVE COMEDY, the fact i can go see studio recordings of TV shows, the PROXIMITY TO THE REST OF EUROPE OMG, the general aesthetic/vibe, the pleasant accents, the general feeling of safety/cleanliness. also you know what? SYDNEY. SYDNEY FUCKING ROCKS. the weather is beautiful, every fucking sydneysider who complains about sydney weather honestly doesn’t know shit. the harbour/seaside is GORGEOUS. there is a GREAT foodie/hipster cafe scene. it’s relatively clean and safe. it’s wonderfully multicultural. it’s lively but not too busy/crowded. (oh man the weather!!) ....yeah both are also crazy fucking expensive and i seem to hate living in affordable places haha kill me

Platter Chatter: Albums from the Doors, Sopwith Camel, Beach Boys, Procol Harum and Pink Floyd
uncredited writer, Hit Parader, February 1968
STRANGE DAYS, The Doors' second album, is another cauldron of energy, excitement and improvisation. (That's Review Number 34, Ray.)
Their recent hit single, 'People Are Strange', characterizes the deceptively simple yet infectious quality of their music. In addition to kinetic sizzlers like 'My Eyes Have Seen You' and the funky 'Love Me Two Times' with its swinging harpsichord, the Doors display a rare tenderness on 'Lost Little Girl', a very pretty ballad with some beautiful guitar lines. 'Horse Latitudes' is a dramatic monolog which leads into the largely improvised 'Moonlight Drive'. Although 'When The Music's Over', the album's almost mandatory eleven minute cut, begins with the introduction to 'Soul Kitchen', it sounds like a further evolution of 'The End' on the Doors' first album. Lines like "we want the world and we want it now" will keep the sociologists busy for months looking for "messages" and "meanings." The front and back album covers are as intriguing as the music inside. Robby Krieger establishes himself as one of the major guitarists playing today. It's a superb album. (ELEKTRA EKS 74014)
THE SOPWITH CAMEL are much more talented and versatile than their singles have indicated. In their first album they demonstrate their famous, quaint old-timey vocals on 'Hello, Hello', 'Little Orphan Annie', 'Things That I Could Do With You' and 'Postcard From Jamaica'. But many ears will be surprised at how nicely the group can rock, as 'Frantic Desolation' and 'Cellophane Woman' attest. They also perform a beautiful baroque-flavored tune, 'Maybe In A Dream'; they sing barber shop harmony on a turn of the century romance, 'Walk In The Park', and they take us to 'The Great Morpheum'. Their entire album is a delight and we recommend it as the sleeper of the year. (KAMA SUTRA KLPS 8060)
PROCOL HARUM gave us one of the biggest hits of 1967, 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale'. Their album debut is no letdown. Indeed, Procol Harum sound like they'll be making records for a long time. A powerful organ sound dominates most numbers. When you listen with the volume turned way up, it can send chills down your spine. Among the many original sounds are the wild piano figure which stomps through 'A Christmas Camel'; 'Conquistador' moves with a march rhythm; and 'Kaleidoscope', with its wailing organ that glides into the gentle 'Salad Days', is quite an earful. Some songs, like 'She Wandered Through The Garden Fence' and the good-timey 'Mabel', remind us what the Lovin' Spoonful would sound like if they were British. 'Repent Walpurgis', a lovely, dynamic, classical instrumental, builds to a fantastic conclusion. Many tracks are four or five minutes long and it's all solid super sound. (DERAM DE 16008)
SMILEY SMILE, the Beach Boys long-long-long-awaited album, has at last been released, minus many of the incredible tracks like 'The Elements' and 'Surfs Up' that had made it a legend in the music business. All that's left is a collection of deft, cute vocal exercises with probably more a cappella harmony on any album since the fall of the singing group era in the late 1950's. There's the brilliant 'Good Vibrations', the complex 'Heroes & Villains' and 'Gettin' Hungry', the little single that couldn't. 'Vegetables' has a nutty jug-band humor, 'She's Goin' Bald' sounds like a fun session in the recording studio and 'Fall Breaks And Back To Winter (W. Wood pecker Symphony)' turns voices into orchestral instruments. We still like Pet Sounds better. (BROTHER RECORDS ST 9001)
PINK FLOYD is, among other things, a colorful new group, from England, complete with costumes, fuzzy hair, lots of sound effects, lively rhythms, bird calls, jungle noises, tricky effects, perhaps various influences of Who, Beatles, Doors, Beach Boys, Procol Harum, science fiction, fantasy, and a bunch of other stuff that might be loosely considered 'psychedelic'. Their song titles are appropriately unconventional, such as 'Pow R. Touch', 'Take Up My Stethoscope And Walk', 'See Emily Play', 'Chapter 24' and 'Matilda Mother'. 'Interstellar Overdrive', a nine-minute instrumental, sounds really weird if you listen through earphones or with your ear right up to the speakers, but it's about three and a half minutes too long. Many of the sounds are dazzling and spectacular but most of it is merely two-dimensional. (TOWER T 5093)

After Culinary and Literary Acclaim, She’s Moving to the Woods
NAHMA TOWNSHIP, Mich. — It was only Saturday morning, and already the problems were piling up for Iliana Regan here in the rainy woods of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Ms. Regan is a 40-year-old chef from Indiana with a Michelin star who last summer published “Burn the Place,” perhaps the definitive Midwest drunken-lesbian food memoir. On its cover, the chef David Chang calls her one of the best chefs he has ever known.
Ms. Regan and her wife, Anna Hamlin, who is 10 years her junior, have staked their future on these woods, where sight unseen they bought a late-1990s, four-bedroom cabin with pine log walls on 150 acres at the edge of the Hiawatha National Forest. They fixed it up and named it the Milkweed Inn. Last summer, they hosted their first guests.
The dream is that every weekend from May to October, 10 people will each pay $750 to nearly $1,000 to relax in the woods and immerse themselves in what some chefs and writers have started calling “new gatherer” or “deep nature” cooking.
If the chef René Redzepi (also a Regan fan) is the Nordic godfather of a culinary movement that cultivates a deep connection to the surrounding landscape, Ms. Regan is its Greta Thunberg, steering her tiny boat steadily into uncharted waters and attempting a new definition of what it means to be an American chef.
“She’s an example of American pragmatism,” said Mr. Chang, who invited Ms. Regan to cook with him last year at an event in Austin, Texas, and later interviewed her on his podcast. “It’s almost a liberal-arts approach to how she cooks.”
Her plan is counterintuitive: Make the remote inn successful enough so she and Ms. Hamlin can jump off the fame Ferris wheel near its apex and close Elizabeth, the Chicago restaurant on which Ms. Regan built her name.
The restaurant has won a Michelin star six years in a row. Jeff Gordinier, the food and drinks editor for Esquire magazine and a former reporter for The New York Times, called it “a funky, foraged, magic-realist vision of the Midwest” when he included it on his recent list of the last decade’s 40 most important restaurants.
Closing it would be a relief, the women said. No more wondering if they can make payroll or whether the dishwasher will show. No more pressure to scale a concept or seduce an investor or battle the haters on social-media platforms like Yelp, which Ms. Regan described in her memoir as a 10-ton penis relentlessly “boinking you on the head.”
She just wants to write, raise a family and fill her pantry with the wonders of the woods.
“Cooking is something I want to be doing until the end of time,” she said. “But I definitely don’t want to be 55 years old and running Elizabeth.”
On this weekend, with winter bearing down and a compound to secure until the first guests would return in May, it was hard to see how that was going to work.
On Friday night, after the staff at Elizabeth had served the last fresh doughnut dusted with blueberry powder, which capped her 14-dish fall tasting menu, the couple wrangled their three dogs into an S.U.V. and drove six-and-a-half hours to get here.
Around 2 a.m., they got lost on the network of profoundly muddy, one-lane logging roads that lead to the cabin. The next morning, Ms. Regan had to drive back out 25 miles to pick up a reporter and photographer at a minimart near the edge of Lake Michigan because the rain hadn’t stopped and the roads were too rutted for a city car to navigate.
Ms. Regan doesn’t so much arrive as she just appears, quiet as a deer. She looks younger than she is, in round eyeglasses and a yellow Minnesota Vikings watch cap she bought not because she is a fan but because she liked the looks of the Viking.
It’s hard to square the woman who quietly suggests a fried chicken thigh from the gas station as a road snack with the person who, before she got sober 10 years ago, ran away from the police in handcuffs, had sex in bar bathrooms and used her car key to administer bumps of cocaine.
“Because Iliana speaks with this high, gentle, childlike voice, I think some people underestimate her,” Mr. Gordinier wrote in an email. “She’s not an innocent kid lost in the woods. She’s actually the wolf. She’s fierce and independent and hungry.”
After a quick stop to pick apples from what seemed like the only tree in the forest that still held any fruit, we made it to the cabin. Almost immediately and despite the clear warning they give every guest not to pet him, Bear, her beloved Shih Tzu, bit me hard enough on the finger to draw blood.
There were other, bigger problems. Mice had discovered a bag of marshmallows left over from a summer s’mores kit. An enterprising rodent had dragged one into the banneton basket Ms. Regan uses to proof her sourdough bread, and hosted a mouse party.
A Knack for Foraging
Bread plays an outsize role in her life. She makes it from a starter she has been tending like a pet for 15 years. It took her a year to learn how to turn wild yeast and winter wheat flour into a perfect loaf with a hard crust and a custardy heart. She serves it as a separate course at Elizabeth, alongside cultured butter that has been molded into the shape of an owl.
The bread also sustains guests throughout their weekends at the inn, which starts with pierogi and smoked lake trout on Friday and peaks on Saturday with a 15-course dinner that might include wild blueberries in juiced wood sorrel, young milkweed pods fried until the insides turn as silky as cheese, and moose tartare.
“Making a good loaf of bread can entirely change my mood,” she wrote in her memoir. Executed correctly, the day is good no matter what else happens. Screw it up, and she feels sad and worthless.
The mice had ruined the proofing basket, so she improvised with a colander and a dish towel. Temperature and timing were not on her side. When she baked her loaf outdoors in a cast-iron Dutch oven tucked inside a ceramic grill, it emerged misshapen with large holes.
Redemption came in a steamy cup of tea brewed from three kinds of mushrooms, including some black trumpets like the ones she hoped we might find down by the river once the rain stopped. She has been making the dark broth ever since she ran an underground restaurant out of her Chicago apartment a decade ago.
“It’s her ‘Free Bird,’” Ms. Hamlin said.
One sip, and you think maybe they can actually pull this off.
Ms. Regan grew up with three older sisters on a 10-acre farm near Merrillville, Ind. Her bedroom had plywood floors, and the basement always flooded. The barn was crammed with used restaurant equipment, coffee cans filled with old parts and an abandoned light-blue Chevy, where she used to sit and fantasize she was on a date with a pretty girl. An outsider observing her young life, she wrote, might have bet she’d grow up to be an alcoholic transgender trucker carny.
Her mother liked to read Gourmet magazine and make her own pasta. Her father, a steelworker who never met a vegetable he didn’t want to grow, saw early on that she had a knack for finding the last ripe dewberry on a bush.
In an arresting passage in her book, she describes the day he taught her to hunt for chanterelles. She was about 5, and so focused on the task that she lost track of him. A drunk uncle who she recalls was always telling her what a pretty little girl she was, picked her up from behind and carried her into a dilapidated cabin. A family friend was inside, saving her, perhaps, from something terrible. He took her back to her father. As they headed to the car with their bags of mushrooms, a tornado spun through the sand and swept the family to the ground. When they finally made it home, her father placed her on a stool next to the stove and taught her how to carefully cook the chanterelles with red wine and butter.
“This was the day I slighted fate and became a chef,” she wrote.
By 15, she was already a hard worker, grinding it out in small-town restaurants. She was drinking, too. And chasing women. She tried studying chemistry at Indiana University Bloomington but realized she wanted to write, so she got a creative writing degree from Columbia College Chicago.
In between classes, she worked in restaurant kitchens, eventually landing a job waiting tables and expediting food at Trio, the restaurant the chef Grant Achatz ran before Alinea, where she also worked for him.
Despite the insight that comes with maturity and a decade of working the steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, she can still obsess over criticism and the backbiting gossip endemic in professional kitchens. To wit, she had heard that Mr. Achatz didn’t think much of her.
Not so, he said in an interview. “There is a certain amount of honesty there that resonates,” he said. “She’s not playing the game.”
In 2008, Ms. Regan began selling food she made or grew at farmers’ markets, including warm pierogi she stuffed with beets and sautéed in butter. Chicago Magazine named them the best pierogi in the city. Two years later, she started a small underground restaurant with an elaborate menu in her apartment. Fans encouraged her to start a traditional restaurant and were willing to back her.
Ms. Regan opened Elizabeth in 2012, naming it after a beloved sister who was a drinker, too. She died, possibly from a stroke, during a night in jail that followed a fight with her husband.
Success, and Stranger Things
Elizabeth is a small restaurant tucked between a tire shop and a soccer supply store in a north-side Chicago neighborhood. The open kitchen in the back feels like something your well-off friends who like to cook might set up until their loft got remodeled. The décor is deeply personal, with thrift-store teacups and antlers and Funko figurines. In the bathroom, a collection of small logs leans against the toilet. A thoughtfully considered shelf holds bobby pins and a marble box of tampons.
It was here that Ms. Regan learned to weed out the arrogant young male chefs who challenged her authority and to temper her own tendencies to either withdraw or yell like a coyote and fire people if things weren’t done properly. She taught herself to become, in her words, a girl boss.
“I can’t really say I have gone to chef ladies for advice necessarily,” she said. Part of it is simple shyness, or maybe respect for their time. When she went to Sqirl in Los Angeles recently, she didn’t tell the chef, Jessica Koslow, that she was coming even though the two had cooked together before and had spent time together in Copenhagen at Mr. Redzepi’s MAD conference.
She just ate, and left a copy of her book. “I know how much pressure there is when another chef calls you up and says they’re coming in,” Ms. Regan said.
Ms. Koslow was disappointed but understood. “She’s just so cool by even doing that, for being someone who doesn’t need to be recognized,” she said. “She is just trying to be her, and that’s so refreshing.”
Doug Seibold, who runs Agate Publishing in Evanston, Ill., has an imprint dedicated to Midwestern literature. He had been following Ms. Regan’s career, and reached out five years ago, thinking she might want to do a cookbook. She didn’t, but she was interested in a memoir. It came out in July. By December, several publications had picked it as one of the year’s best.
“I think some people were unprepared for a Michelin-starred chef to be the daughter of a steelworker union rep who grew up with sisters who were drunk and fighting all the time,” Mr. Seibold said.
The memoir made the long list for the National Book Awards, the first time a food book landed there in nearly 40 years. The September morning the list was announced, she and Ms. Hamlin woke up to dozens of messages. They had no idea what had happened.
“I had to actually look up the National Book Award,” Ms. Regan said. “It was a huge shock.”
She is working on her second book. It’s about foraging, but also about inherited trauma and her family’s cooking lineage.
The book advances were small, and went right back into the restaurant. The couple relies mostly on income from cooking classes and Elizabeth’s popular theme menus, which can cost close to $600 for two with wine and can last three or four hours.
Ms. Regan created one inspired by the television show “Stranger Things,” and prepared her “Game of Thrones” menu by reading all five books and highlighting every food reference. During November, the theme was 1980s Nintendo. The menu featured dishes like a Super Mario mushroom built from a root-beer leaf with Meyer lemon and a slice of black truffle sandwiched between brick pastry.
“I basically gauge how far she is willing to go,” said Ms. Hamlin, who is as animated as her wife is introspective. She grew up in a Southern Indiana restaurant family, and fell for Ms. Regan when she was working for a wine distributor and landed the Elizabeth account. Now she is a full partner, running service, worrying about staff and matching beverages as eclectic as the food.
They also offer an elegant, seasonal tasting menu, which is so personal it can restore an eater’s faith in a format that has become cliché. Late last fall, she served a dense, rosy slice of duck that had been dry-aged for three weeks, with a sauce made from the apples and wild cranberries we had harvested together at Milkweed a month earlier.
Still, 2019 was a tough year, even though the book was a hit and they hosted their first guests at the inn. Ms. Regan had to close her two other Chicago businesses: Bunny, the Micro Bakery, which had been entangled with a difficult investor, and Kitsune, a 24-seat mash-up of Japan and the American Midwest that was a critical darling when it opened in 2017.
The closings were a blow to her ego, but she had to consolidate. It was the only way to save Elizabeth, expand the inn and create some semblance of a balanced family life.
“Everybody around me seemed to be, like: ‘Hashtag-cheflife, it’s all good,’ ” Ms. Regan told Mr. Chang on his podcast, “and I’m like, what are they talking about?”
She also had a miscarriage last year. Ms. Hamlin has medical challenges, so it’s up to Ms. Regan to carry their child. More attempts to get pregnant haven’t worked yet, but they’re trying.
On Their Own
The Milkweed Inn is all Pendleton blankets, deer taxidermy and wood smoke. The water pressure is great, and the basement is filled with new fishing gear and inflatable kayaks. A copy of the 2016 Best New Chefs edition of Food & Wine is in one bathroom. There Ms. Regan is on the cover, the only woman in a sea of 10 men.
You can rent one of three rooms inside the house, a platform tent or the tiny Airstream trailer the couple took around the country to cook pop-up dinners in 2018. It has a bumper sticker that reads “Ted Bundy was a Republican,” which is just one reason the handful of people who own hunting cabins nearby were initially suspicious of the two women.
After a walk to look for mushrooms, Ms. Hamlin removed the orange vests the dogs have to wear during hunting season. Ms. Regan was busy sweeping the new wood floor. She had two walleyes hanging by their lips over a fire outdoors, and a pile of chores to do before they left the next day.
Talk turned to what little progress has been made for women in the restaurant business and whether her book would become a movie and just what it means to homestead a new life here.
Ms. Hamlin is still adjusting.
“I know we’re safer here than when we’re in the city, but I am scared of bears and I’m scared of old white men sometimes,” she said. “This can be quite isolating.”
“That’s why I like it,” Ms. Regan said. She slipped on a jacket and headed outside to check on the fish.

10 Books to Spark a Love of Math in Kids of All Ages
Math is at play in every sphere of our lives, from recipes to internet security to the electoral college. But that reality can be hard to convey through the drills, static numbers and strict rules that make up so much of K-12 math education. Educators have made strides to engage students through math. One way to bring the subject to life, according to a math research organization, is through literature.
“Mathematics is very creative and playful and joyful,” says Kirsten Bohl, a spokeswoman for the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute. “Books connect with that sense of wonder and imagination and creativity.”
To spotlight such books, MSRI created the Mathical Book Prize in 2015. Each year a panel of librarians, teachers, mathematicians and early childhood experts selects winners and honor books in five age categories. This year’s picks brings the full Mathical list to more than 50 titles that cross genres and formats, including picture books, graphic novels, biographies, and young adult novels.
What matters most, according to Jordan Ellenberg, co-chair of the selection committee, is that the books succeed in communicating mathematical ideas or problems and also succeed as great books.
“Anybody can stick a lot of math in a book,” says Ellenberg, a University of Wisconsin professor of math who also holds a master’s degree in creative writing. “If it’s a bad book, it’s not going to interest kids.”
The committee also looks for books touching on a range of interests. “A lot of kids don’t think of themselves as math people, but the intention of the award is to help kids understand that math is for everybody,” says Bohl.
Below are 10 books on the Mathical list, including this year’s winners.
Baby Goes to Market Written by Atinuke, illustrated by Angela Brooksbank Pre-K 2018 Mathical prize winner
At a Nigerian outdoor market, Mama shops while Baby attracts edible gifts from the vendors. Baby eats one of each treat before adding the rest to the basket. When the basket gets heavy, Mama hurries home to feed “Poor Baby!” who’s “not had one single thing to eat.” According to Ellenberg, the math in a children’s book need not be announced in the title, but children should be able to recognize that it’s happening. For example, Fran Wilson, one of the other judges, shared that second-graders in her classroom pointed out the subtraction at play in Baby Goes to Market without her prompting. “That’s a sign of a real winning book,” says Wilson.
Have You Seen My Dragon? By Steve Light Pre-K 2015 Mathical prize winner
A child narrator searches high and low for his pet in this multilayered counting book. Children will enjoy spotting the roving dragon amid a richly detailed, pen-and-ink cityscape. They will also practice counting via a set of objects featured in spot color on each spread: two hot dogs, five water towers, 12 pigeons, and so on — up to the 20 lanterns in a final scene where the child and dragon are reunited.
Sheep Won’t Sleep: Counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s Written by Judy Cox, illustrated by Nina Cuneo Grades K-2 2018 Mathical prize winner
Clarissa tries all the usual tricks for falling asleep, including counting sheep. When that fails, the sheep suggest counting alpacas — this time in pairs. When that also fails, the alpacas recommend counting llamas — by fives. As the trend continues, Clarissa’s room fills up with woolly animals in bold colors and patterns. The comical storyline and bright illustrations will engage early elementary schoolers as they practice advanced counting skills.
Absolutely One Thing By Lauren Child Grades K-2 2017 Mathical prize winner
Big brother Charlie guides little sister Lola through the rules of numbers as they trek to the store to pick out a toy. Younger readers will enjoy correcting Lola’s faulty number sense, while older readers can join Charlie in embedded calculations, such as: how many stickers does Lola have left after sticking five on the pavement, three on a tree, two on her shoes, one on her brother and one on the dog? (Answer: zero.) Although the pages are chock full of digits, a well-paced plot, sibling humor and funky illustrations make for a breezy read.
A Hundred Billion Trillion Stars Written by Seth Fishman, illustrated by Isabel Greenberg Grades 3-5 2018 Mathical prize winner
How do you convey the immensity of numbers like three hundred seventy billion billion? Writing 37 followed by 19 zeros likely won’t do the job. Instead, this book uses awe-inducing facts from the cosmos (a hundred billion trillion stars in the universe) and the ground beneath our feet (10 quadrillion ants on Earth) to explore scale and estimation. According to Ellenberg, literature can’t replace classroom instruction in the practice of math but books like this one can spark a “dizzy excitement” that’s also important to the learning process. “You can tell a kid there’s no largest number,” he says. “If they can feel it, that’s a different story.”
Secret Coders #1: Get with the Program Written by Gene Luen Yang, illustrated by Mike Holmes Grades 3-5 2016 Mathical prize winner
Hopper knows there’s something strange about her new school. When she and basketball star Eni team up to find out what, things turn out weirder than she imagined. Readers are introduced to the principles of programming through logic puzzles, a robotic turtle and creepy birds in this adventure-filled graphic novel from the 2016 National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. The book is the first in a series. Mathical also offers an educator tip sheet for Secret Coders.
Giant Pumpkin Suite By Melanie Heuiser Hill Grades 6-8 2018 Mathical honor book*
In addition to presenting calculations, figures, and puzzles, another way for a book to be mathematical is by portraying characters who love and practice math. In Giant Pumpkin Suite, math and cello enthusiast Rose deals with literal and figurative growing pains as she joins her shorter, nonmusical twin brother in a project to grow a record-breaking pumpkin for the state fair. “We want kids to see mathematics but we also want kids to see mathematicians, because math is in the end a human activity,” says Ellenberg.
Really Big Numbers By Richard Evan Schwartz Grades 6-8 2015 Mathical prize winner
With frank, funny narration Schwartz takes readers on a numerical journey that begins at one and proceeds through mind-bogglingly large figures — but still ends very far from infinity. Complex ideas are tackled through everyday objects and patterns in whimsical, geometric drawings. Unanswered questions on some spreads will encourage readers to keep pondering and calculating after putting the book down. Mathical also provides an educator tip sheet for this book.
Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race By Margot Lee Shetterly Grades 9-12 2018 Mathical honor book*
Better known as one 2017’s hit movies, Hidden Figures tells the inspiring story of African-African women “computers” whose brains and grit helped launch NASA astronauts into orbit. With more depth than the film, this book illuminates the interconnections between math, careers and social history. A young readers’ edition and a picture book version also are available.
Genius: The Game By Leopoldo Gout Grades 9-12 2017 Mathical prize winner
Three online friends and tech prodigies from diverse parts of the world connect in real life during a high-stakes global tech challenge. Together they embark on a quest not only to win “the Game” but also to solve their individual problems: Rex is searching for his missing brother, Tunde is on the run from a military warlord, and Painted Wolf must conceal her identity after exposing corrupt Chinese officials. Told in realistic, rotating voices and filled with suspensful plot twists, this book will grip teenage readers regardless of their prior interest in coding or programming.
*The Mathical selection committee did not name winners for middle or high school grades this year. According to Bohl, that decision reflects the lack of frontlist titles that were submitted by publishers for the older age groups.
