I Caught A Snake (And Didnt Keep It)
I was minding my own business...
and making a beetle enclosure (post to come) when I found a snake! I was turning over pieces of wood and a Plains Garter Snake was just chilling under the planks near where I keep firewood!
Unsurprisingly...
I didnt keep the snake. I would have loved to, as I love snakes! But I couldnt just because of my current situation and my preparation. Im creating this post for teaching purposes, Id like you all to know some of what Im about to say because it has helped me :)
Why You Cannot Just Get A Snake
You probably dont have the materials, and unless you plan to run to a store you probably will not. You need a proper means of feeding your snake, as well as a heat lamp and a proper enclosure. Where I live I cannot get these things
You should get a captive snake over a wild one. Sadly, wild snakes can have gross diseases and parasites as a result of what they eat.
You need space. This may not be a problem for many if you, but I am currently in a small living arrangement where I cannot house a snake!
You probably havent done too much research. An hour or two on wikipedia is not research, unfortunately. For complicated things of that sort I recommend so much more time and effort
Thank you for reading! Here are pictures of the snake (which I named Freddy before releasing) :)

When I see people freak out about snakes, it reminds me of when I was 16 and was in California at a dual diagnosis facility (LOL) and there was a gopher snake slithering across the field. Everyone that was near it was freaking out including the big “tough” guys lol 🥺 one of the staff members called maintenance to come get it and bring it somewhere else.
I naturally, upon hearing the walkie conversation, run over to the commotion in my heels (that I used to wear all the time at that age) having to avoid the many gopher holes along the way, with the staff members yelling “KARINA NO” (because at this point they knew me well enough lmao) and I grabbed it by the tip of the tail, yanked it back a little, lightly pressed my heel behind its head so it wouldn’t be able to snap at me, picked it up, and put it around my neck like a scarf lol. Everyone was like “WTF is wrong with you!” Hahaha
Maintenance walked me over to the fence and told me to toss it over, I didn’t wanna do that so I just let it go nicely lol. So from then on whenever there was a snake they were like “Keep karina away!!” Because I was a liability and they didn’t want to get sued lmfao.
