Not many people know the movie, probably lesser so since its 65 years old. But if you can find it, see it.
Good suspense thriller.

When in 1959 the CIAM met in Otterlo its demise had already been precipitated by a group of young architects, among them Alison & Peter Smithson, Aldo van Eyck, Jaap Bakema, Georges Candilis, Giancarlo de Carlo and Shadrach Woods who would later form the core of Team 10. The latter until its last meeting in 1977 in Aix-en-Provence continued the CIAM’s discussion of mass housing but with an emphasis on larger structures and their urbanist implications. The team’s history (i.e. the history of the previously mentioned core group) has been meticulously reproduced in the present and still essential publication: „Team 10 - In Search of a Utopia of the Present“, edited by Max Risselada & Dirk van den Heuvel and published by NAi Publishers in 2005. Divided into two comprehensive parts it offers a chronological breakdown of the relevant meetings the core members took part in between 1953 and 1977 as well as the projects and buildings discussed on these occasions. The second part consists of expert essays that address specific subjects and offer interpretations of the group’s output and theoretical deliberations. From these emerges the impression that Team 10 was inherently driven by the rejection of the purely analytical  approaches of the CIAM that fostered the social problems associated with postwar urbanism but at the same sought to carry forward the modern project. One of the central points of discussion thus was the reconciliation of modern architecture and historical context through sensitive, particular solutions rather than universal ones as propagated by the CIAM. The results were interesting projects discussed in heated debates.
Speaking of heated debates the book also reveals the hegemony of the Smithsons who not only controlled the organization of the Team but also the debates: tough sessions of critique were imperative but it seems that newcomers were given a particularly hard time, a sort of exclusivity that eventually led to a break with Aldo van Eyck who pursued a more open philosophy.
“Team 10 – In Search of…” is a wonderfully rich sourcebook that brings some order into the complex and conflicting history of a legendary group. Essential reading!

Which history period do you think has the best art?
oh i love this but i’m a little biased because i got my BA degree with a thesis on depictions of personified death in northern renaissance art so i have to go with that! northern renaissance is so underrated and rarely taught - most instructors favor the italian renaissance. northern renaissance was more directly impacted by the emergence of the merchant class as well as religious upheavals (i.e. the protestant reformation) so their art feels a little more dramatic to me. also i’m a sucker for amazing iconography in art, which is why jan van eyck is my favorite artist like—
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the level of detail in his art is bonkers and the colors he used are so rich and evocative!!
so yeah i’m a northern renaissance girlie hands down, however i do love baroque art too specifically this painting by caravaggio called the crucifixion of st peter
Tumblr media
and of course, my favorite baroque artist of all time artemisia gentileschi!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
probably known best for her multiple depictions of judith and holofernes (one of them shown below) but all her work is such an interesting look into her psyche and how her trauma affected the art she created. she’s incredible!
Tumblr media
this is a very very long answer for a simple question but i genuinely love this shit it’s my passion so yeah! thanks for asking!
