Concussion (2015)
Tumblr media
I'm saying it: Concussion has been unjustly judged. Yes, Will Smith probably took the role in the hopes of bagging himself an Academy Award, but his performance is a good one, and isn’t that what we want to see? Good actors challenging themselves with meaty roles? Combined with an important story that will make you think, can we call it a bad film?
When forensic pathologist Bennet Omalu (Smith) discovers a link between the premature deaths of football players and the injuries they suffered during their careers, he publishes a paper on his observations. Surprisingly, the reception it receives is less than warm.
If we can all be realistic and take a step back, can we admit that America’s love of football has gone a bit far? Yes, it requires enormous amounts of strategy, skill, and training to win and is tremendously entertaining… but it is, in the end, just a game. This film - based on a true story - frequently brings up the idea of religion. Faith is, of course, an important aspect of every person but in film, unless your religious affiliation is tied to the plot it feels like an unnecessary detail; a way to coax like-minded audiences into cheering for the protagonist. Its inclusion in Concussion is a brilliant move. Writer/director Peter Landesman realizes the zeal people have for the sport. It helps us understand Omalu’s distance from this American pastime. While other people look forward to the game on Sunday, he has another destination in mind that morning. He merely points out a link between tragic events and the injuries players suffer during a game. He never suggests that football should be obliterated, but it’s met with the same frightening hostility you'd expect from religious fanatics.
Even if Omalu wasn’t “in the right”, the film would still be entertaining. The characters are well developed and the performances quite strong, particularly from Smith. Omalu is sweet, cheerful, optimistic, well-intentioned, and pitted against such an overwhelming opponent! There’s a tender love story between him and his wife, Prema (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) that helps you care about the man’s personal life and understand his motivations.
On a technical level, the editing and cinematography are smartly done. The way the clips of real-life football injuries are juxtaposed next to each other seems to give them a whole new meaning. Is it subtle? No. Does it need to be? I don't think so. The findings make it pretty clear. Then, the last few scenes wrap the film up nicely. They can be interpreted in a few different ways, depending on how you feel about the NFL.
All that said, you can see why the film didn’t score any major award wins. At times, Concussion tries a bit too hard to be grand. It also isn't all that memorable. By no means does that make it bad, it’s just not "so good it’ll change the world good", and that’s what it wanted to be.
Concussion has a fair amount to offer casual audiences, and if you're a fan of the sport it's examining, it will have a tremendous impact on you. If you're scared it will ruin the Superbowl, there's no need to worry. It will merely give you some food for thought. That’s more than enough to recommend it. (On Blu-ray, March 3, 2017)

There was absolutely zero discourse between me or anybody at the studio with the NFL. None. The only exchange was one-sentence e-mails trying to arrange a meeting, before deciding to cancel the meeting. Period. End of story. —Peter Landesman
