Nope.

My friend @a-dragons-journal is dragonkin and their blog (and second blog @a-dragons-explanations ) discusses a lot of stuff about the otherkin and alterhuman communities, including why misuse of ‘kin terminology and jokes using the communities’ terminology is harmful. I’m not part of the community myself, but they are and can answer questions more in-depth and know more about the history of the communities.

The quick explanation is ‘kin (short for otherkin/otherkind or fictionkin) is someone who non-physically involuntarily identifies as non-human or in the case of fictionkin as from a fictional source media.

The otherkin community has been established since at least the 70s and otherkin and therian (like otherkin but mostly specifically “real world” animals) experiences have been documented for even longer. Trolls cropped up a lot in the late 2000s/early 2010s particularly on tumblr doing stuff like creating blogs pretending to be ‘kin and mocking them and misusing terminology. Anti-kin around then coined the word “kinnie” and tended to be very ableist and homophobic/transphobic (it’s likely “kinnie” is derived from a transphobic slur, because of where it originated and similarity to the slur though there’s no way to know for sure).

Misuse of ‘kin terminology really kicked up in the past year or two on tiktok because of some trends (”Make assumptions about me based on who i kin” and similar) defining terms with the wrong definitions, and some communities started picking up those wrong definitions and perpetuating the misuse of terms.

This is hurtful to the community because language they use to describe their identities and experiences are being taken by people outside the community, many who are or were hateful towards the community, and twisted and misused which makes it difficult for people in the community to find information about their identities and experiences. Using ‘kin as a verb perpetuates the idea that it’s a voluntary aspect of identity, which it isn’t (there are terms in the community for voluntary identities of similar experiences), and misdefining it as just heavily relating to something invalidates a lot of people’s experiences and identities. Also a lot of people who claim ‘kin take things “too seriously” are extremely ableist in calling ‘kin delusional and similar for their identities.
