2 Internal Assessment
2.1. Corporate Profile
PLDT
Headquarters:
Ramon Cojuangco Building, Makati Avenue corner Dela Rosa Street, Legazpi Village, Makati, Philippines.
PLDT is the Philippines' largest and only integrated telco company. Founded on November 28, 1928, the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) is the leading telecommunications and internet service provider in the Philippines. Through its three principal business groups—fixed line, wireless and information and communication technology, PLDT offers the largest and most diverse range of telecommunications services across the Philippines’ most extensive fiber optic backbone and fixed line, cellular and satellite networks.
The company's core businesses are fixed-line telecommunications, mobile telephony services, broadband, and internet of things services under various brands. It also has investments in broadcasting, print media, utilities, and direct to home satellite services, among others. As of 2019, PLDT is listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE:TEL) and its American Depositary Shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE:PHI). PLDT has one of the largest market capitalizations among Philippine-listed companies.
The first president of PLDT was Theodore Vail Halsey while Major J.E. Hamilton Stevenot, who represented the American firm General Telephone and Electronics Corp. (GTE), was elected executive vice president and general manager.
When PLDT was incorporated and given the franchise to establish and operate telephone services in the country on November 28, 1928, a typhoon had just ravaged Eastern Visayas, Bicol Peninsula, and Samar. The ability to communicate amongst loved ones and across the country became crucial. Sadly, phone networks then were like disconnected intercom systems and you could only call people within your own small city. Filipinos were disconnected from neighboring towns, disconnected from friends in the other island and, needless to say, disconnected from the rest of the world. It was under this scenario that the law was signed giving birth to PLDT.
What the new law hoped to achieve was to interconnect these "intercom" systems into a seamless nationwide network that would facilitate communication and delivery of services to the people, as well as spur economic development in the countryside.
Under the American owners of PLDT, many small phone companies in the provinces were acquired by the Company to help speed up the rollout and connection of these different phone systems all over the country. The management of PLDT was then set to lay the groundwork towards linking Filipinos to each other and, more importantly, to the world.

Table 2
Tumblr media
Note:
*Weight- 0-1 (important)
*Rating 1 (Major Weakness), Rating 2 (Minor Weakness), Rating 3(Minor Strength), Rating 4(major strength)
*Weighted score- Weight x Rate = Average score
The total weighted score of 2.68 in the table above indicates that PLDT has a strong internal status, with its strengths outnumbering its weaknesses.
Strengths
PLDT’s three main business groups, Fixed Line, Wireless, and Information and Communication Technology, provide the country’s most comprehensive and diverse range of telecommunications services. To offer the best services to their customers, the company uses the most comprehensive fiber optic backbone as well as fixed line, cellular, and satellite networks.
Weaknesses
On the other hand, one of PLDT’s flaws is its sluggish link speed. When PLDT introduced its Vibe and DSL products, which enabled customers to connect to the internet faster via broadband, there were numerous complaints about the service. The slow internet was the one of the top complaints as it failed to meet the customer’s needs. And those issues were not addressed or published in a timely manner. Customers may decide to switch providers if they believe that they find a better offer for the service they need.
3 External Assessment
a. Economic Forces
i) Economic/Business Cycle Stage
High political stability provides a stable and friendly business environment with predictable market growth trends. However, when there is political chaos, it deters the investors and harms the stakeholders’ trust in economic and consequent organizational performance. Currently, PLDT Inc. is present in different countries, each having own political tensions.
ii) Inflation/Employment/Interest/Exchange Rates
The GDP growth rate will determine the PLDT Inc.’s ability to pursue its long-term growth strategies. High GDP also signals the consumers’ ability to spend more on offered products. High unemployment signals the availability of surplus labor at comparatively lower wages. Operating in such a market can lower the production cost of PLDT Inc. The organization should also carefully consider the interest rate and its influence on borrowing ability and attitude towards investment. The high interest rate will encourage the attitude towards investment and increase growth opportunities for PLDT Inc. Finally, the exchange rate fluctuation can also influence the profitability and international trade. The high fluctuation on local currency can be a cause of serious concern for PLDT Inc.
iii) Labor Market Conditions
PLDT Inc. must study and predict the labor market conditions to understand how it can attract talented workers and leverage their skills to improve business performance. When labor markets are flexible, PLDT Inc. can take advantage of higher labor productivity. Whereas, operating in rigid labor markets may cause labor wage and other issues raised by powerful labor unions. PLDT Inc. should also carefully analyze the availability of skilled human capital as a shortage of skilled labor can affect business efficiency and make talent attraction and retention more challenging.
iv) Financial Markets Efficiency
The global expansion strategies of the PLDT Inc. are influenced by the financial market efficiency as operating in highly efficient financial markets leads towards improved liquidity position and strengthened ability to enter new markets. The health and efficiency of financial markets will determine PLDT Inc.’s ability to raise the capital at fair prices.
v) Economic Structure
The business practices of the PLDT Inc. are influenced by the prevailing economic structure. The economic and regulatory environment in a monopolistic or oligopolistic structure will be different from the monopolistic competition and perfect competition.
b. Social, Cultural, Demographic, and Natural Environment Forces
i) Demographic Trends
Studying the demographic characteristics can help PLDT Inc. in choosing the right market segment/segments with high growth potential. The business and marketing strategies are also influenced by migration. It is important for PLDT Inc. to understand the people’s general attitude towards migration as it can influence firms’ ability to bring international managers to host country.
ii) Equality and Power Distance
PLDT Inc. must adjust its business management practices while entering in markets with high or low power distance. The growing inequality in many countries is altering the power structure, which has serious implications for international business organizations like PLDT Inc.
iii) Gender Roles
PLDT Inc. need to study the traditionally assigned gender roles to align its marketing and communication practices accordingly. Marketing and human resource strategies in a traditional, patriarchal society with clearly distinguished gender roles will be different from societies with low gender stereotypes.
iv) Societal Norms and Class Distribution
PLDT Inc. should develop local teams and develop local partnerships for understanding the societal attitudes and norms to tailor marketing strategies according to unique cultural context. The observation of social class stratification is also important for PLDT Inc. Offering luxury products at premium prices to a market where the high-end market is considerably small in number will require PLDT Inc. to adopt the niche marketing strategies.
v) Online Shopping
PLDT Inc. needs to understand the online shopping behavior by considering the generational differences as younger consumers are more inclined to shop online than older customers. The growing use of mobile phones and social networking sites must be considered when developing marketing and communication strategies.
vi) Spending Patterns and Behavior
PLDT Inc. should invest time on understanding the consumption motivations and social trends that define the consumption behavior. PLDT Inc. should also attempt to understand the degree of consumer ethnocentrism and consider the country of origin effect to determine local consumers’ evaluation of foreign products. Lastly, PLDT Inc. should study the consumers’ leisure interests and should focus more on enhancing the customer experience if customers prefer experiential products over traditional product offerings.
c. Political, Governmental, and Legal Forces
i) Political Stability
PLDT Inc. is present in different countries, each having own political tensions. Growing tensions and instabilities in the global political environment can affect the Gold industry growth and limit the growth opportunities available to PLDT Inc.
ii) Changing Policies
It is important for PLDT Inc. to study the current trends in the country’s political scenario as changes in government may alter the government’s priorities towards the development of different industries.
iii) Protests/Pressure Groups and Governance System
PLDT Inc. should carefully analyze the protests by pressure groups, social/environment activists and worker unions as such protests play an important role in the policy making process. Close collaboration with such groups may enhance the PLDT Inc.’s ability to collaborate with community and achieve long-term corporate goals.
iv) Bureaucracy and Corruption
Operating in countries with high corruption level and weak law enforcement makes the business environment increasingly unpredictable for PLDT Inc. due to jeopardized public trust on business organizations and overall political and economic structure. The corruption can influence various business operations, ranging from licensing, contracting, fraudulent deals to frequent lawsuits. It will also threaten the organization’s sustainable development by destabilizing the society, harming justice system and endangering the rule of law.
v) Taxation, Trade Restrictions, and Intellectual Property Protection
High taxation affects international trade and prevents exports. PLDT Inc. can enter in low taxation markets and benefit from high profits that can be invested in research and development activities. PLDT Inc. should know the specific taxation policies to understand the host government’s priorities and interest in developing industries and how intellectual property rights are protected in the host country and make the business strategies accordingly.
a. Technological Forces
i) Social Media Marketing
Use of social media has become common in a modern business environment. PLDT Inc. can leverage the opportunities offered by social media marketing to improve business performance. Technological trends can be used to start the creative social media campaigns for developing online brand communities.
ii) Technological Innovations and Development Level
PLDT Inc. should carefully consider the on-going technological innovations to stay ahead of the competition. Entering in markets where technological advancement has not reached the maturity means PLDT Inc. can increase the market share by focusing on emerging technological innovations.
iii) Research and Development on Technology and Impact on Cost Structure/Value Chain
PLDT Inc. needs to consider the investments made by competitors on a micro and macro level to understand how new technologies influence the firm’s value chain and prevailing cost structure. Research and development activities are highly important in an environment characterized by creative disruption.
iv) Shortened Product Life Cycles
The adoption of new technologies has shortened the lifecycle of new product development. Today, new products are developed quickly, and supply chain partners have also gained more power. It pressurizes PLDT Inc. to develop new products quickly, increase product range diversity, integrate flexibility into the value chain and develop healthy business relationships with value chain partners.
3.1. Porter’s Model Analysis
Tumblr media
Figure 2. Porter’s Model Analysis
• Rivalry Among Competing Firms = Strong
There are only few competitors that PLDT have in the Philippines such as Globe Telecom, Sky Cable Corporation, and Converge ICT Solutions. Globe Telecom is one of the leading telecommunications companies in the Philippines. It operates mobile, fixed line, and broadband networks and provides communications services to individual customers, small and medium-sized businesses, and corporate and enterprise clients. Next is Sky Cable Corporation which is known as the first internet service provider and the leading cable and broadband technology provider in the Philippines. It offers broadband, cable and satellite television services. And lastly, Converge ICT Solutions which is the leading player in all-optical broadband access industry in the Philippines. It operates fixed networks, fiber optics, cable TV, enterprise private lines, fixed broadband, and wireless broadband services for home, businesses and in the corporate world. These are the top competitors of PLDT for having almost the same services in the market. In that case, PLDT should step up their game since they offer almost the same services with these competitors. They should try differentiating their services or add something unique by providing new services. In that way, PLDT can get new customers and gain more loyal customers.
• Potential Entry of New Competitors = Moderate
There are also new entries of competitors of PLDT such as Dito Telecommunity Corporation. Dito Telecommunity Corporation is formerly known as Mindanao Islamic Telephone Company, Inc., or Mislatel. It is considered as the newest major telecommunications company in the Philippines. It offers connectivity with secure, fast, and high value 4G and 5G technologies that enable the customers to be connected, anytime, anywhere, any way they prefer. PLDT should focus on innovating their services from this new competitor. In that way, it can build a strong brand identity in the market.
• Bargaining Power of Suppliers = Strong
These suppliers can influence in raising the prices as well as reducing the goods and services of PLDT. It includes foreign investors, international and local contractors, and stakeholders. Foreign investors such as American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) where they issued with American Depositary Share (ADS) which represented one PLDT common share. This means that ADSs are listed and traded on the New York Stock Exchange and the Pacific Exchange in the US where PLDT (as one of the largest market capitalizations) is in listed companies. International and local contractors such as Chinese telecom suppliers Huawei Technologies, FiberHome, Sunsea Telecom Ltd., and Tyco Electronics, Singapore-based Fujikura Asia Ltd., Sweden’s Ericsson Telecommunications, and Fibercom Telecom Philippines which helps in the first phase of its P1.8-billion fixed-line fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network rollout program. And lastly, stakeholders which have a say in nominating directors as well as independent directors. Having these suppliers can help PLDT develop a close relationship where all of them can benefit from each other.
• Bargaining Power of Consumers = Strong
These consumers help in determining the quality of the goods and services offered by PLDT. It includes businessmen who are in charge in generating revenue from business activities, changing network services who are in charge of satisfying the customers' expectations and concerns regarding quality of service, pricing, application process, service provisioning process, repair and restoration service and the billing process, government sectors wherein having a partnerships with them can help the society, and lastly, small entrepreneurs such as PLDT Load / Smart Load from over 1 Million retailers nationwide and sari-sari stores or any PLDT Sales and Service Centers. These consumers can reduce the prices and improve the quality of the goods and services offered by PLDT.
• Potential Development of Substitute Products = Strong
These substitute products offer the same benefits of PLDT but in a different way. It includes mobile data and portable or pocket WIFI. Mobile data is an ability to use your cellular data in online browsing. It can also replace your internet at home especially if you are a light data user by activating your hotspot. Light data users use internet at home just to check the email, shop occasionally, or browse the websites. This can also save you from paying too much for an internet. Another substitute is Portable or pocket WIFI. Portable or pocket WIFI is a small wireless modem that connects any Wi-Fi enabled device (smartphones, laptops, and tablets) to the internet using load. It is small and light which makes it very comfortable to carry. These substitute products are considered as a threat for PLDT.

The External Factor Evaluation (EFE) Matrix shows the evaluation of external factors according to its weight, rating, and weighted score. The Key External Factors are based on the opportunities and threats of PLDT. Based on the gathered data, the total weighted score of weight is 1.0, while the weighted score is 3. This means that PLDT’s strategies are effective in taking advantage of the opportunities and preventing threats in the company.

The three companies had met the average standard of how performance of the industry should be in terms of what kind of service that this company is giving to their customers. As you can see from the table in terms of the scoring and with the comparison of various strengths and weakness that has been computed and being scored, we can tell that in terms of the final result, the PLDT has more advantage on attaining and being successful at their field because of how they cater the demands of their customers which is their strong point. It is mostly in terms of the PLDT’s breath of service offered and its availability and accessibility to the whole various people and to their customers which makes them attain and preserve the excellency they are known of in their line work as it is. The reason why the other major strengths of the other two companies of its competition had been seemed as not sufficient or effective is because of the availability and quality of the products that is being produced is mostly not covered by most demand of the customers all across the country.

And such economic factors of the Philippines could work in their favor in terms of growth rate of the industry, inflation & industry’s economic indicators as digital service provider will be determined on how they’re daily goals of assets and profits will be in the next several years. PESTEL analysis is also a great way to examine and to enlist such several major factors that could identify future advantages and disadvantage of a major company when dealing itself in the macro perspective of its environment. In this time of digital age we need to remember in all the things that surrounds us may not seem as they used to be. It is far more competitive and we grab the innovative approach towards success and improving our ways of life This could set as an example of the technological services and devices that is being distributed into this globalized economy. We should always remember that every industry has its impacts to any other types of other industry or services that comes along the way and if we disrupt this process we may face such difficulties in coping up or slowing down to give opportunities to the key players of any specific industry into this globalized age. In the last recent years technological services has been improving and it is fast approaching and sometimes there are such instances that it is hard to cope with and with the best possible social is to determine whether on how we keep on track on the playing field which will not only make a greater impact to the company or in the PLDT company in this case but also to the competitive companies on it who struggle to make a difference and to improve the ways how economy is distributed in the globalization. Environmental Factors
Being technological service provider we must look into the various effects of the environmental situations that we deal every day because it should always remember that technology can have a various effects from which condition of the weather occurs in our day to day environment as it is the most vulnerable type of industry that is very much exposed and that could also depend on the environmental factors where it could impact the PLDT conditions of its services to the users as it is. And it is very crucial as every day we are losing money and generating profits on it from time to time. I case of the PLDT, they should always remember to determine and to not only protect the authenticity and quality of their services and as a whole company but also to the one who will be affected to the way they handle things in terms of the legal reasons, which in the best interest of their investors, shareholders, employees and most of all their customers. 4      Strategy Formulation
In order to provide the continuously of success and the progress development of the PLDT, they believe in creating the wider broad of services and distributing the positive effects in the industry of the company not only covers the communities but with the whole globalization that is in place in the country as it can also make a positively approach or an any outlook that set as a responsibility towards influencing to other countries as well.  According to the press released of Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan, “The PLDT Group is in a unique position in the industry – we have the scale and ability to continue investing significantly in infrastructure and services which can impact positively on our country’s development. We have been always mindful however that this strength begets much responsibility. We have therefore seen to it that our subscribers derive commensurate benefits in terms of value and innovation”. In order to formulate a strategy within the company, expectations is a valid statement that must’ be acknowledge within the company. It doesn’t mean that it can or cannot have an adverse effects in the company but just think the possible potential of the company in the long run where there will be on some point that they can improve their services not only to the people but also in the business as well. And its expectation is the representative of how valid and consistent their work as it is.
It was therefore concluded by Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan that “Over the medium term, our goals are to continue achieving growth in our core businesses while establishing new revenue streams from recent investments, principally Spi. Our strong cash flows provide us with this “triple play” ability – new investments, sustained capital expenditures and increasing dividend yields. In this way, we address shareholder needs both for the present and for the longer term,” And it is a valid point to which the reputation is continuously uphold by their excellent services which actually reveals better result from the expectation of the masses and had actually generated revenue and more profit coming from the customers, investments and its shareholders.
“Our core earnings for the first quarter this year have been more encouraging than anticipated. We envisage revenues to continue growing whilst we manage down our cash costs, including interest expense. Cash flows will be healthy; debts will continue to reduce across the board – including prepayment of most of Piltel’s debts. In that light, our dividend payment policy is currently being considered with the view of raising our payout ratio to shareholders to 60%. This reflects our improved assessment of prospects for 2006 as a whole,” - Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan

The resulting figure indicates that the broadband and mobile are in the star quadrant with high market share and high market growth. It can be forecasted that with the maintenance of quality of product and service, it will remain and can keep its good position. Filipinos developed solutions at home together with NASA
Tumblr media
MANILA, Philippines -- Last October 2-4, 2020, Filipino developers, engineers, technologists, designers, scientists, coders, storytellers, makers, builders, innovators, and entrepreneurs from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao came together to address real-world problems on Earth and space by engaging with the United States space agency National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) free and open data, together with partner agencies like Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), National Centre for Space Studies (CNES) of France, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), and the European Space Agency (ESA) in a virtual hackathon. Some of the projects developed include road hazard detection, data visualization tools, and machine learning for satellite image monitoring, and a lot more.
This year's edition of NASA's International Space Apps Challenge was held online due to the coronavirus pandemic situation worldwide. The theme of this year "Take Action" -- is a critical reminder that anyone can make a difference, even from the comfort and safety of home. In this unprecedented time, the Space Apps community exists as a reminder that there the tools and talents to tackle challenges facing the planet, as well as the ability to unite across boundaries and borders of all kinds.
Vice President Leni Robredo lauded this event as "our ability to gather ourselves, organize, and come together have opened the doors to technology and progress. We have done great things, cure diseases, find ways to connect with each another across the oceans, and even walked on the Moon... all thanks to mutual cooperation."
The first Director-General of the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) Dr. Joel Joseph S. Marciano Jr. stressed the importance of space science in helping the society. "Space infrastructure, space data, and space-enabled services therefore help inform policies and decision-support systems that can lead us to better plan and decongest our cities, improve our transportation systems, monitor the state of infrastructure, enable better connectivity, enhance our agricultural and fisheries production, and protect our natural environment," he said.
Tumblr media
Since the start of Space Apps in the Philippines on 2016, the country witnessed on how the community grew from a group of volunteers to forging partnerships with collaborators and stakeholders. For many years, Filipinos collaborate and work with one another in developing projects to solve problems using space technologies. NASA and partner agencies recognized the hard work done by Filipinos, and thus being recognized and awarded globally as winners and finalists consecutively in the past three years. Software developer Michael Lance M. Domagas is optimistic that in these momentous and trying times, the country would still choose to prioritize and give value to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), especially in emerging fields like space science where innovators can contribute and solve the most pressing problems prevailing in the society and environment today.
"How could someone imagine that Earth-observation data coming from space could give us valuable and unique insights about the socio-economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic in various countries, and to pinpoint possible mosquito habitats which causes another epidemic called dengue? Why can't we support our own modern-day heroes specializing in new and emerging technologies to address issues and help others in our country? NASA and partner agencies from other countries have already recognize the ingenuity of Filipinos for the past three years. Now is the proper time for our own country to recognize their achievements too," Michael Lance said. Together with technology and developer community leader Tzar C. Umang from Pangasinan and U.S. cultural affairs officer Matt T. Keener, Michael Lance looks forward in having more Filipino winners and finalists being recognized, and to a more meaningful and impactful Space Apps challenge in the future years to come.

British envoy reads Bonifacio piece for PH Independence Day
#PHnews: British envoy reads Bonifacio piece for PH Independence Day
MANILA -- British Ambassador to Manila Daniel Pruce joined Filipinos in celebrating Philippine Independence Day by channeling revolutionary hero Andres Bonifacio through the poem "Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Lupa".
In a one-minute video posted at the British Embassy page, Pruce reads in Filipino the first few lines of the piece: "Aling pag-ibig pa ang hihigit kaya sa pagka-dalisay at pagka-dakila gaya ng pag-ibig sa tinubuang lupa? Aling pag-ibig pa? Wala na nga, wala."
The poem, published in 1896, is an exhortation to Filipinos to take up arms for the country's independence.

In the same video, he hailed the "determination and resilience," as well as the kindness and courage of Filipinos globally as the world deals with a different battle.
"Here in the Philippines, I've been full of admiration for the love of the country that shone through in the incredible collective effort to deal with the coronavirus," Pruce said.
Other foreign governments, including the United States, Russia, Australia, China, Israel, and Canada, also extended their felicitations on the occasion.
State Secretary Michael Pompeo cited the US-Philippine alliance "fortified" by the two nations' shared history and bilateral cooperation.
"Our friendship and cooperation stand as a model for ensuring peace, stability, prosperity, and health across the Indo-Pacific. As you commemorate your 122nd year of independence, the United States of America congratulates the people of the Philippines on this joyous occasion," Pompeo said.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova conveyed Moscow's "sincere congratulations" to Manila and the Filipino people, noting the two states' developing ties.
Meanwhile, Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines Rafael Harpaz praised the country's achievements since it broke free from Spanish rule.
In a statement, the Canadian Embassy in Manila underscored its strong people-to-people ties with the Philippines.
"Today, almost 840,000 Canadians of Filipino origin call Canada home. Now and always, we look forward to continue strengthening our relationship with the Philippines. Mabuhay at Maligayang Araw ng Kalayaan," it read. (PNA)

Despite massive efforts and funding to support irrigation development, the increase in irrigated areas has been minimal in the Philippines, particularly in Mindanao. To expand the irrigation base, new irrigable areas may be served by small-scale systems, such as the communal irrigation systems (CIS). This Policy Note presents an assessment of select CIS in the Philippines. Among others, it finds that several technical problems confront the performance of CIS. These include the frequent delays and inequitable water flow distribution, as well as CIS investments that do not also take into account the recurrent costs associated with operation and maintenance activities of dams and control systems.

This Policy Note revisits the chronically overworked state of public school teachers in the Philippines. It finds that the workload of public school teachers is not only limited to teaching but also to other non-teaching tasks. Because of this workload, actual teaching is increasingly being sidelined by the multitude of other responsibilities and roles that teachers play. The study also finds the dropout rate as a faulty metric of teacher performance. Given these findings, it urges the government to address human resource distribution at the Department of Education. It also recommends the conduct of evidence-based studies in reducing teacher workload.

GROUP SYNTHESIS
Based on our understanding between the 4 articles that we have chosen, it only have 1 common goal and that is to develop an individual from their capacity and capabilities. In the Text 1, it says that they are focusing in the nutrition of the mothers and children and the prevention of child stunting in our county. While in the Text 2 under it is the issues between gender inequality about the girls are more capable of learning something when it comes to school rather than the boys. The Text 3 talks about the focus of the government on the improvement of planning and budgeting of the operation and maintenance activities of Communal Irrigation System. Lastly the Text 4 talks about the states of the public school teachers who are overloaded with work that includes not-school related works. This articles can be related to each other because these are the issues that the Philippines are experiencing and should be focused by the PH Government. Their main point is to let the people understand and to let them know the issues that have been affecting the Philippine Economy that is the reason why we Filipinos are not upgrading. The Authors wrote these articles also to inform the Filipino people the latest issues that the Philippines is experiencing and to know their opinions and insights about the issues that have been written. The purpose of this articles is also to point out their main idea of what they want to inform to the people around them to help us unite and brainstorm our ideas and this will be the way for us to become one and know our limitations as a person and a Filipino citizen. The articles also states how the issues affect the productivity of our nation even if it is not the main issue here in our country. It is also connected because these articles are needed to be followed because it is not only to help the Philippine economy but also it helps the Filipino citizen to be united and have the same mind on how to solve these issues that the Philippines are facing right now. These issues are needed to be faced because these can help our society to be more developed if we are going to see this thoroughly and understand the real meaning of it. Our country is in need of understanding and connections between the people because that is the only way to at least make an progress in our economy. The country of the Philippines is one of the poorest and outdated country in the whole wide world unlike in the other country they are more advance specially in the technology and their economy. These are the reason why people in the Philippines are going outside the country to work for them just to provide the needs of their families. This is also one of the reason why people in the Philippines are poor and do not have the knowledge about the real world who are more advance nowadays. The issues are needed to be solved to lessen the problems in our country and to make a step to advancement to be in the level of the other country and not to be outdated specially in our time these days. This only shows that the 4 articles are informing people the problems that the PH have been facing nowadays.
REFLECTION
We've learned that these articles can help the government to know about the issues and problems that are experienced here in our country. The 4 articles talks about the people who are in need of attention of the government to solve their problems and can help them to prevent these issues to widen. It also helps us to realize and know more about our country and make a step on how to handle situations like that. These articles are written with purpose and that is to get the attention of other people and know their opinions about the issues in the PH based on the articles. We've come to realize that we filipinos should be united with one goal and that is to make each other have progress and help each other to develop, have knowledge and having also the capability to solve one problem that can help the government to reach their goals and implement their plans to make our country more upgraded and be the one of the developed country in the world. As a citizen in our country, we should cooperate and follow the rules that the government is implementing because even in this simple way, we can help our country to be productive. We must respect these processes and not allow ourselves to be used by individuals or groups with vested interests. We are the constitutionally mandated protectors of the people and will stand by our law abiding citizens whenever and wherever we are needed. We also realized that the articles that have been discussed is making the people to be informed for them to at least have help our society. It can also be reflected to us people that are living here in our country because we are the ones who can benefit more in the resources that we have and we are also be the one to be affected by the issues that the Philippines are experiencing in our generation. We can also implement the proper etiquette on how to be a responsible citizen by reading the issues because we can come to realize the ways of being a responsible citizen. The articles that we have chosen can help those people who are involved in the following issues because the government can make a step to see the issues and to have a step to make a solution for the following issues. It can also prove that the message of the articles is to explore even if it is belong to the outdated issues because it can still affect the progress of our economy in our country. This can also be the reason why the country of the Philippines is not upgrading because the government does not know about the smallest issue that can still affect the society. We also students can give our own opinions to help the government on how to solve and on how to have an answer in the following issues. We the youth is the hope of this country so we should be involving ourselves and also have a little help because your small help can be the biggest help a simple citizen could give.

Magnesium Bicarbonate – The Ultimate Mitochondrial Cocktail
There are good reasons many believe that there is nothing in mainstream medicine that addresses de-acidification, detoxification, fixing nutritional deficiencies, modulating and boosting the immune system, and increasing full body circulation. Medical science has failed in its attempts at curing degenerative, metabolic, or autoimmune diseases. Without removing toxins and acids from all organs, cells and tissues, and without providing the essential nutritional building blocks like magnesium, the body will not be able to heal completely.
Unless a treatment actually removes acid toxins from the body and increases oxygen, water, and nutrients most medical interventions come to naught. With most allopathic medicines themselves being mitochondrial poisons, what happens is that they often change the symptom picture that then almost always drives disorders into a deeper chronic state. When the body’s tissues and cells become too acidic in conjunction with mitochondrial deficiency we set the stage for tissue inflammation and degeneration as we become breeding grounds for anaerobic pathogens.
It is time for allopathic medicine to understand that viruses, bacteria and fungi all thrive in acid conditions. Why is this so hard for orthodox doctors to understand? Tissues and cells are like factories with furnace mitochondria everywhere and everything gets very dirty with acid wastes that have to be cleared away every millisecond we are alive. There is no way around the reality that metabolism creates acid waste that can accumulate quite rapidly under the right conditions.
Increased oxidative stress, which correlates almost exponentially with ph changes into the acidic, is especially dangerous to the mitochondria, which suffer the greatest under oxidative duress.
Many in the alternative health field believe that there is not one drug on the market that reduces the acidity of the body or addresses any king of nutritional deficiency. This is not true! There happens to be two exceptional medicines that are excellent in addressing most of the issues mentioned above. Magnesium chloride and sodium bicarbonate are both considered medicines in their injectable forms and both provide almost immediate relief to physiological disturbances.
Patients receiving sodium bicarbonate achieved urine pH’s of 6.5 as opposed to 5.6 with those receiving sodium chloride. This alkalinization is theorized to have a protective effect against the formation of free-radicals that may cause nephropathy.4 – Dr. Michael Metro
One of the fundamental approaches to medicine has to be the alkalinization of the body so it can dispose acids from our cells tissues, and organs. We can do this in many ways but often doctors have to do this in quick ways in emergency situations. Other times, when we have cooperative patients we can use food as medicines and accomplish things gradually with time.
The most powerful alkalizing foods on the planet are the ones that are highest in chlorophyll. In Magnesium Medicine, my third magnesium book due out soon, is a chapter called The Lamp of Life and it’s about the central role that magnesium has in life. It is also the central atom in the chlorophyll molecule. Without magnesium, without chlorophyll, life simply does not exist.
You just can’t beat the cell-restoring potential of green foods such as wheat, barley, kamut, alfalfa, and oat grasses along with spirulina and chlorella. These foods are all high in magnesium and act readily as food medicines. They are thousands of times more powerful than ordinary green vegetables, because they are super concentrated in chlorophyll, alkaline minerals, rare trace minerals, vitamins, phyto-nutrients, and enzymes. My favourite has always been spirulina and I include it in all my protocols.
Though I believe in the power of raw food diets and healing medical approaches like the Gerson Diet, today we need exceptionally powerful medicinal medicines that are not really medicines in the way we normally think of medicines. Both sodium bicarbonate and magnesium chloride are common items that when not injected are considered foods safe for consumption. Luckily for everyone these two substances are affective for chronic and acute disorders when used orally and transdermally; we do not need to go to the emergency room for injections.
This chapter is specifically about the dynamics of using these two substances together. They offer a combination therapy that is natural, effective and safe and can be used readily with other protocol items, medicines and healing processes. Add some sun (vitamin D), iodine, ALA and Vitamin C and we will go a long way of helping the pharmaceutical giants to an early grave.
Magnesium bicarbonate is a complex hydrated salt that exists only in water under specific conditions. The magnesium ion is Mg2+, and the bicarbonate ion is HCO3-. So, magnesium bicarbonate must have two bicarbonate ions: Mg (HCO3)2. Magnesium chloride and sodium bicarbonate taken at full strength with water at slightly separated times are an ideal way to supply magnesium ions and bicarbonate ions to body cells.
Magnesium and bicarbonate rich mineral waters are easily absorbed and have many health benefits.
Likewise, in small doses, the two together make up an ideal treatment system for distilled and reverse osmosis water.[1] Adding these two substances to taste not only will remineralise highly processed water but will provide the body with a constant supply of the ultimate mitochondrial cocktail. Good drinking water would contain approximately 125 mg of magnesium and 650 mg of bicarbonate per litre.[2] When consumed together magnesium chloride and sodium bicarbonate work very well together to combat basic physiological problems.
When our tissues become too acidic and lacking in magnesium necessary for ATP production cellular metabolism drops off and this can lead to obesity and diabetes.
Few clinicians are aware how these two substances work to enhance each other – they are mutually reinforcing because magnesium functions as a bicarbonate co-transporter into cells. And bicarbonate acts as a transporter of magnesium into the mitochondria. Magnesium influx is linked with bicarbonate transport according to the Dietary Reference Intakes guide from the Institute of Medicine. Magnesium transport into or out of cells requires the presence of carrier-mediated transport systems (Gunther, 1003; Romani et al., 1993).[3] ATPase reaction has a broad pH optimum centering on neutral pH, with little significant activity above pH9.0 or below pH5.5.[4] Thus anything that moves us from overall acid conditions toward alkaline that recover the neutral zone is going to enhance cell metabolism via mitochondrial optimization.
Alkalosis enhances magnesium reabsorption in the juxtamedullary proximal nephron.[5]
It was actually the dedicated work of Dr Russell Beckett, a veterinarian with a PhD in biochemical pathology that paved the way to understand the significance of bicarbonate acting in conjunction with magnesium. He has formulated Unique Water which, it has been asserted, slowed the ageing process and increased the length of life of humans and other mammals and could be used to treat all inflammatory and degenerative diseases. Unique Water is water containing magnesium bicarbonate at an alkaline pH value. Dr. Beckett’s theoretical and experimental research has resulted in the understanding how important both of bicarbonate and magnesium ions are in human physiology and how they work together to optimize human health and the ability to recover from disease.
Bicarbonate ions working alongside magnesium would naturally create the conditions for increased glucose transport across cell plasma membranes. Bicarbonate ions without doubt create the alkaline conditions for maintaining the enzyme activity of pancreatic secretions in the intestines. Bicarbonate neutralize acid conditions required for inflammatory reactions hence sodium bicarbonate would be of benefit in the treatment of a range of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. An excellent research group called Agua G is studying the overall benefits of bicarbonate in human physiology.
Bicarbonate acts to stimulate the ATPase by acting directly on it[6].
Magnesium does not readily reach the mitochondrion, but if plenty of bicarbonate is available the bicarbonate will act as transport into the mitochondrion. The only problem is that the few magnesium bicarbonate products that are almost impossible to find for sale are expensive compared to using magnesium chloride and sodium bicarbonate individually. It is possible to make one’s own magnesium bicarbonate.[7] This chapter does not make a strong recommendation for you to go out and buy magnesium bicarbonate or even make it yourself as directed in this last footnote. A person gets much more control over both bicarbonate and magnesium physiology when magnesium is taken in its chloride form and the bicarbonate is taken as sodium bicarbonate. When using magnesium chloride for oral consumption you must use the highest quality sources.[8] Sea water evaporation magnesium oils are not appropriate for this type of application.
The bicarbonate buffer system occurs in both intra- and extracellular fluids. It consists of carbonic acid (H2CO3) and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). If a strong acid is present, it reacts with sodium bicarbonate to produce carbonic acid and sodium chloride, minimizing the increasing concentration of hydrogen ions. If a strong base is present, it reacts with carbonic acid, producing sodium bicarbonate and water, minimizing the alkaline shift.
Highly alkaline water with magnesium, bicarbonate, calcium and potassium increases pH significantly in the body.
Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is a ubiquitous metalloenzyme that catalyzes the reversible hydration/dehydration of carbon dioxide. Carbonic anhydrase enzyme is ever-present in body cells and constitutes up to ten percent of the soluble protein in most body cells. It is one of the fastest enzymes known: each carbonic anhydrase enzyme produces from ten thousand to one million acid groups (H+) per second. The acid (H+) produced by carbonic anhydrase enzyme is pumped by proton pump enzymes into cell organelles such as lysosomes, phagosomes, endosomes and ruffled membranes.
In red blood cells (rbcs), CA is the second most abundant protein to haemoglobin and plays a crucial role in CO2 transport. More specifically, rbc CA catalyzes the hydration of CO2 to HCO3– at the tissue site of production, and the dehydration of HCO –3 to CO2 at the respiratory surface, thereby facilitating the transport and excretion of CO2 from the body.[9] In addition, rbc CA also facilitates the linkage of O2 and CO2transport via the Bohr effect.[10] Carbonic anhydrase speeds the reaction of carbon dioxide and water. This reaction produces carbonic acid, which quickly dissociates into bicarbonate and hydrogen ions.
Bicarbonate ion concentrations decrease the formation of acid by carbonic anhydrase enzyme (Le Chatelier’s principle). In the presence of magnesium and bicarbonate ions, less acid is produced by carbonic anhydrase enzyme.[11] But studies with partially purified carbonic anhydrase from spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) chloroplasts show that the effect was the result of the chloride ion and not the magnesium ion. Enzyme activity was reduced 50% upon addition of 3 to 10 millimolar MgCl2 or KCl while all additions of MgSO4 between 0.3 and 10 millimolar were mildly stimulatory.[12]
Excess acid accumulation leads to oxygen deprivation and thus cell fermentation. Acid conditions lead to cell rot, another term for cancer.
This reaffirms my long standing belief that magnesium chloride is the absolute best form of magnesium for, among many reasons; the very important chloride ion is supplied. Chloride physiology is just one more basic that is being addressed.  It is important because we see reduced acid through reduced carbonic anhydrase enzyme action. Chloride is required to produce a large quantity of gastric acid each day and is also needed to stimulate starch-digesting enzymes.
Using other magnesium salts is less advantageous because these have to be converted into chlorides in the body anyway. We may use magnesium as oxide or carbonate but then we need to produce additional hydrochloric acid to absorb them. Many aging individuals, especially with chronic diseases who desperately need more magnesium, cannot produce sufficient hydrochloric acid; and then they cannot absorb the oxide or carbonate.
Dr. David Brownstein importantly tells us, “Chloride and bromine compete for reabsorption in the kidneys.  When there is a decreased amount of chloride in the body (which is common in low-salt diets), less bromine will be excreted from the kidneys resulting in elevated bromine levels.  Increasing the amount of chloride in the diet will allow the kidneys to release more bromine into the urine for excretion.” Bromine is a huge problem today and both Dr. Brownstein and I have written books on Iodine, which again bring in the salt question. Iodine gets its way into almost any medical protocol today and combines perfectly with magnesium chloride and sodium bicarbonate. (I recently received a note from Dr. Brownstein – “Loved your iodine book.  Great piece of work!  Can’t wait for your next book.”)
We are at a very interesting level of biology and physiology when we talk about bicarbonate, magnesium, and chloride ions.  And even sodium in the sodium part of bicarbonate is absolutely essential to human health. As we mentioned in another chapter sodium bicarbonate as well as citrate and phosphate salts do not raise blood pressure to the same extent as do the corresponding amounts of sodium chloride. A study on mineral water containing sodium bicarbonate has confirmed the absence of any effect on blood pressure in elderly individuals.[13] This is an updated chapter from my book.
Sodium itself is needed for many functions of the body. Its main function is in providing the balancing of fluids in the body. Sodium is necessary for life and a deficiency can result in often life threatening conditions such as dehydration, heart palpitations,  and muscle cramping all of which can rapidly progress to more dangerous situations  if left untreated.  So sodium bicarbonate is a good way of getting the essential salt we need. Most of the salt that is consumed in the world is not any good anyway, it is salt with the minerals all stripped out and that goes for sea salt as well as mined processed salt. Salt is a very important subject. It  is most effective in stabilizing irregular heartbeats and, contrary to the misconception that it causes high blood pressure, it is actually essential for the regulation of blood pressure – in conjunction with water. For more information read Dr. David Brownstein’s book SALT – Your Way to Health.
Sodium bicarbonate is known to decrease serum concentration of ionized magnesium ([Mg2+]) when sodium bicarbonate is added to neonatal serum in vitro. The addition of sodium bicarbonate causes a significant decrease in [Mg2+]. From this in vitro study we speculate that fast infusion of sodium bicarbonate in human neonates may potentially cause a clinically significant decrease in serum [Mg2+].[14]
Magnesium stabilizes ATP[15], allowing DNA and RNA transcriptions and repairs.[16]
Where would the magnesium go but into the cells and bones where most magnesium reserves are found? Higher pH levels and the bicarbonate itself will help the magnesium leave the blood serum driving Mg2+ into the cells where again the bicarbonate will carry it from the cytoplasm into the mitochondria where, in cases of chronic disease, it is desperately needed. Thus magnesium and bicarbonate, when used together, would considerably increase the energy production in body cells.
Mg2+ is critical for all of the energetics of the cells because it is absolutely required that Mg2+ be bound by ATP the central high energy compound of the body. – Dr. Boyd Haley
Magnesium bicarbonate decreases the production of acid from carbon dioxide in body cells. Magnesium and bicarbonate would at the same time increase energy in several ways. First, magnesium bicarbonate protects the natural organic and inorganic phosphate buffers in the cytoplasm of cells. Second, magnesium bicarbonate neutralizes the acid produced as a result of metabolic processes and ATP hydrolysis. This allows more ATP to be hydrolyzed; that is, more energy can be utilized.
Magnesium bicarbonate buffers the mitochondria in body cells from excess acid concentrations which improves mitochondrial function and allows more ATP to be produced. When more ATP can be hydrolyzed and more ATP can be produced, body cells have sufficient energy for optimum function.
ATP without Mg2+ bound cannot create the energy normally used by specific enzymes of the body to make protein, DNA, RNA, transport sodium or potassium or calcium in and out of cells.  ATP without enough Mg2+ is non-functional and leads to cell death.– Dr. Boyd Haley
Dr Seeger and Dr Budwig in Germany have shown that cancer is mainly the result of a faulty energy metabolism in the powerhouses of the cells – the mitochondria. ATP and most of the enzymes involved in the production of energy require magnesium. A healthy cell has high magnesium and low calcium levels. The problem that comes with low magnesium (Mg) levels is the calcium builds up inside the cells while energy production decreases as the mitochondria gradually calcify. Thus taking magnesium chloride and sodium bicarbonate together is ideal for cellular environments turned acidic and calcified.
Magnesium ions constitute the physiologically active magnesium in the body; they are not attached to other substances and are free to join in biochemical body processes.[17]
There is no way one can address in this chapter all the possibilities and the medical power one can achieve when combining magnesium chloride with sodium bicarbonate. Whether one has heart or neurological disease, diabetes, cancer or a bad case of the flu taking these substances together offer doctors and patients safe and effective treatment.
So deep are the protective, buffering and neutralizing properties of bicarbonate that it is used even with radiation exposure to protect the kidneys and other tissues. In a world that is already overexposed to uranium oxide and mercury magnesium bicarbonate becomes even more important because mercury and uranium oxide directly attack the nuclear material and mitochondria of the cells.
The use of DU weaponry by the US, defying all international treaties, will slowly annihilate all species on Earth including the human species, and yet this country continues to do so with full knowledge of its destructive potential.– Leuren Moret
“Depleted (DU) uranium is highly toxic to humans, both chemically as a heavy metal and radiological as an alpha particle emitter, is very dangerous when taken internally,” writes Dr. Rosalie Bertell, Canadian Epidemiologist.[18] A new study, conducted by biochemist Dr. Diane Stearns at Northern Arizona University confirms that, separate from any radiation risks, cells exposed to uranium will bond with the metal chemically.[19]
The kidneys are usually the first organs to show chemical damage upon uranium exposure, military manuals suggest doses or infusions of sodium bicarbonate to help alkalinize the urine if this happens. This makes the uranyl ion less kidney-toxic and promotes excretion of the nontoxic uranium-carbonate complex. The oral administration of sodium bicarbonate diminishes the severity of the changes produced by uranium in the kidneys.[20]
Uranium and phosphate have a strong chemical affinity for each other and the DNA and Mitochondria are loaded with phosphate so uranium is a DNA and Mitochondria deep penetration bomb. The uranium is attacking on fundamental cellular levels while mercury offers a knock out punch by attacking the sulfur bonds besides being highly toxic to nerve cells. Nephrotoxicity of the kidneys with necrosis of proximal tubules has been seen to increase significantly with dual exposure to both uranium and mercury.[21]
Bicarbonate ions neutralizes carbonic acid formed in the body during metabolic processes. Several studies have shown that an increased intake of bicarbonate may help prevent muscle wasting and bone loss. Our diets are usually acid. Acids burn out our cells and causes accelerated aging. Bicarbonate is alkaline and provides the body with the extra alkalinity needed by the body to neutralize excess acidity.
The medical industrial complex has deliberately programmed generations of doctors to hold with the poor idea that using highly toxic and dangerous drugs is preferable to using vastly safer concentrated nutritional substances that make better medicines then any drug the pharmaceutical companies can fabricate. Magnesium chloride is used in emergency rooms and so is sodium bicarbonate to save lives everyday. Interesting that the medical intelligence has been lacking to combine the two and use their collective strength to even greater effect.
Emergency Room Medicines for Chronic and Acute Diseases.
Magnesium chloride, iodine and sodium bicarbonate actually replicate the biological action of prescription drugs at far less cost and with fewer side effects. They are like the primary colors on a master painter’s pallet; with the primaries one can make almost any color, or a doctor in his place could generate almost any medical effect safely and swiftly. There are other substances like these three but these are primary and impinge their benefits directly onto cell physiology in a very coordinated synergistic way.
Magnesium bicarbonate would clearly come out heads in the class of cerebral protective agents. Magnesium bicarbonate would offer significant cerebral protection with high preservation effect on neurological function following brain injury or in healing chronic impaired dysfunction like in Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.
When the nervous system is injured, the brain produces self-protective molecules in an attempt to halt damage. Following injury, the death of nerve cells occurs over a prolonged period of many hours or days, which provides a “window” for therapeutic intervention. Magnesium chloride is the undisputed best first therapeutic agent to be injected for stroke and is being tested in ambulances in Los Angeles.
This chapter is opening up a new door for allopathic medicine because it combines two emergency room and intensive care medicines for everyday use. My new book that lays out my conceptual designs for the future of medicine is called Principles and Practices of Natural Allopathic Medicine. Magnesium chloride and Sodium Bicarbonate are non pharmaceutical, non toxic concentrated nutritional medicinal medicines. These are backbone medicines no clinic or home medical kit should be without.

Distilled water is not safe for long term use, it lacks bicarbonates and minerals and yes, it is acid forming to the body. Yet it is an excellent aid in detoxification and chelation for it purity pulls on toxicities in the body. Part of the reason why our body is acid is that it lacks enough bicarbonate necessary to neutralize the acid. Whenever the water lacks the proper bicarbonates to neutralize the water in distilled water your body basically becomes acid. Long term acidity causes acid blood, which is like acid rain, causes the calcium from the bones to be leeched out and as a result, the tissues and organ have too much of calcium clogging the system. Therefore distilled water is generally not recommended as a regular drinking water, since most of our body usually receives bicarbonates from the water we drink than from the food we eat. But we can easily treat distilled water by adding bicarbonate and magnesium and then it is not really distilled water anymore.

The method consists of using one tablespoon of magnesium carbonate to be dissolved with soda water. Buy a bottle of Carbonated Seltzer water – NO SODIUM, just carbonated “fizz” water, unflavored. Refrigerate for a couple of hours. Get another, larger bottle, and pour 2/3 of a capful of PLAIN (no-flavor) Philips Milk of Magnesia (which is Magnesium Oxide, an alkaline laxative) into the large bottle. (The bottle comes with a plastic measuring cup which is what I mean when I say 2/3 capful.) Now quickly open the bottle of carbonated water (water + carbonic acid) and empty it into the large bottle containing the 2/3 capful of Magnesia. Shake well. You will have a bottle of milky/cloudy liquid which is in the process of neutralization between the carbonic acid and the magnesium oxide– leaving a neutral salt, Magnesium Bicarbonate.
Ancient Minerals Magnesium Oil and Bath Flakes are both pure enough for oral consumption even they are not sold for oral use.

Mg2+ is critical for all of the energetics of the cells because it is absolutely required that Mg2+ be bound (chelated) by ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the central high energy compound of the body. ATP without Mg2+ bound cannot create the energy normally used by specific enzymes of the body to make protein, DNA, RNA, transport sodium or potassium or calcium in and out of cells, nor to phosphorylate proteins in response to hormone signals, etc. In fact, ATP without enough Mg2+ is non-functional and leads to cell death. Bound Mg2+ holds the triphosphate in the correct stereochemical position so that it can interact with ATP using enzymes and the Mg2+ also polarizes the phosphate backbone so that the ‘backside of the phosphorous’ is more positive and susceptible to attack by nucleophilic agents such as hydroxide ion or other negatively charged compounds. Bottom line, Mg2+ at critical concentrations is essential to life,” says Dr. Boyd Haley who asserts strongly that, “All detoxification mechanisms have as the bases of the energy required to remove a toxicant the need for Mg-ATP to drive the process. There is nothing done in the body that does not use energy and without Mg2+ this energy can neither be made nor used.” Detoxification of carcinogenic chemical poisons is essential for people want to avoid the ravages of cancer. The importance of magnesium in cancer prevention should not be underestimated.
Magnesium has a central regulatory role in the cell cycle including that of affecting transphorylation and DNA synthesis, has been proposed as the controller of cell growth, rather than calcium. It is postulated that Mg++ controls the timing of spindle and chromosome cycles by changes in intracellular concentration during the cell cycle. Magnesium levels fall as cells enlarge until they reach a level that allows for spindle formation. Mg influx then causes spindle breakdown and cell division.

A radioisotope of an element will bind best to the same substrates which a non-radioactive isotope of the same element will bind. Dr. Stearns has established that when cells are exposed to uranium, the uranium binds to DNA and the cells acquire mutations, triggering a whole slew of protein replication errors, some of which can lead to various cancers. Stearns’ research, published in the journals Mutagenesis and Molecular Carcinogenesis, confirms what many have suspected for some time – that uranium can damage DNA as a heavy metal, independent of its radioactive properties. The biochemical reaction of heavy metals can cause genetic mutations, which in turn can curtail cell growth and cause cancer. Heavy metals that are also radioactive amplify this effect and can cause distortions in shape and thus function even of red blood cells.

USA: Jack Kleinsinger's Highlights In Jazz 46th Anniversary Gala Thursday, February 28, 2019 8 PM BMCC TRIBECA Performing Arts Center
Tickets & Info
Each year, savvy jazz fans look forward to the annual Highlights In Jazz series. For almost a half century, the Jack Kleinsinger-produced events have brought together a multitude of beloved jazz musicians spanning an eclectic mix of generations and styles. The 2019 season is no exception, with four stellar concerts featuring some of the brightest luminaries in jazz today. The new season gets off to a roaring start with the Highlights In Jazz 46th Anniversary Gala, featuring pianist/vocalist Daryl Sherman, saxophonist Houston Person, trumpeter Warren Vaché, clarinetist/saxophonist Ken Peplowski, pianist Norman Simmons, bassist Boots Maleson, and guitarist James Chirillo. And as always at Highlights In Jazz events, a special surprise guest will be on hand. Listeners will be treated to unforgettable performances as these seasoned jazz veterans mix it up together and make the magic happen. “Producing all-star jams is my stock in trade,” Kleinsinger notes. “What you’ll hear at these concerts is different from what you’d hear in a club. These great musicians get together here to play with people they don’t play with every night of the week.” A mainstay of the New York jazz scene, Daryl Sherman has built a devoted following with her talent and creativity as a pianist and singer, and her distinctive take on the Great American Songbook. A frequent guest on Marian McPartland’s “Piano Jazz,” Daryl presided over Cole Porter’s Steinway at the Waldorf-Astoria for 14 years, and was legendary bandleader Artie Shaw’s vocalist of choice. She’s appeared with Bucky and John Pizzarelli, Bob Dorough, Wycliffe Gordon, Dick Hyman, Dave McKenna, Jay Leonhart, Howard Alden, Joe Temperley, and Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, to name just a few. Saxophonist Houston Person is among the most in-demand tenor players in New York today. He’s known for his affinity with singers, honed during his 20-plus years with vocalist Etta Jones. Besides releasing dozens of albums as a leader in the company of greats such as Ron Carter, Steve Nelson, Cedar Walton, Bill Charlap, Joey DeFrancesco, Bernard Purdie, Les McCann, Benny Green, Grady Tate, Curtis Fuller, and other notables, Person has appeared on scores more as a sideman. Is there anything trumpeter, cornetist, and flugelhornist Warren Vaché can’t do? The New Jersey-born brass star has made his mark from Broadway pit orchestras to big bands to free-wheeling jazz ensembles. He’s appeared in the company of Howard Alden, George Shearing, Bucky Pizzarelli, Bill Charlap and dozens of others. Vaché lists Louis Armstrong, Roy Eldridge, Bobby Hackett, Fats Navarro, Tom Harrell and Ruby Braff among his favorite trumpet players. Saxophonist/clarinetist Ken Peplowski was still in elementary school when he landed his first pro gig, playing in a Polish polka band in his native Cleveland. From that moment, he knew the musical life was his destiny. Ken studied with Sonny Stitt, and played with classic bands like the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and with Benny Goodman. He’s also collaborated with Mel Torme, Charlie Byrd, Peggy Lee, George Shearing, Hank Jones, Dave Frishberg, Rosemary Clooney, Tom Harrell, James Moody, Cedar Walton, and Bill Charlap. Ken has released several albums as a leader and appeared on more than 400 recordings as a sideman. Norman Simmons wears many hats, all of them gracefully: composer, arranger, pianist, educator, and more. In his native Chicago, he led the house band at one of the most renowned clubs of the era The Beehive, backing greats such as Wardell Gray, Lester Young, and Charlie Parker. Besides providing the arrangement for Ramsey Lewis’ hit “Wade in the Water,” Simmons is widely known for his work with legendary vocalists including Carmen McRae, Anita O’Day, Betty Carter, and Joe Williams, and for his special feel for the compositions of the great Duke Ellington. In-demand bassist Boots Maleson is a veteran of ensembles large and small, including the big bands of Harry James, Jimmy Dorsey, and Bob Alexander, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. He has also accompanied Milt Jackson, Elvin Jones, Jaki Byard, Archie Shepp, Kenny Barron, Dexter Gordon, Stanley Cowell, Benny Carter, and Marlene Verplanck, and many others. Versatile guitarist James Chirillo has been heard with a spectrum of talent that spans Wynton Marsalis, Paquito D’Rivera, Wycliffe Gordon, Michael Feinstein, Tony Bennett, Joe Lovano, Marcus Roberts, Dick Hyman, Benny Goodman, Benny Carter, Eddie Durham, Eddie Barefield, Frank Wess, and Joe Wilder. The winner of a composition grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, James has also appeared on Broadway and movie soundtracks. With the Highlights In Jazz series nudging the half-century mark, Kleinsinger is justly proud of his ongoing legacy as a producer. Since the very first Highlights in Jazz event, “Every concert in the series has been integrated, has included a variety of younger artists and veterans, and has featured a renowned surprise guest. And every year we honor a living jazz great—let’s honor them while they can smell the roses,” he declares. This year’s honoree, Randy Brecker, will be feted at the May 16th concert. The HIJ series is a favorite destination for New York jazz fans and in-the-know out-of-towners. Besides the lineup of jazz icons onstage, there are often stars to be found in the audience as well—sports greats Venus Williams and Willie Randolph, actors Bette Midler and Alan Alda, and author Kurt Vonnegut, to name just a few. The secret to the longevity of the beloved Highlights In Jazz series? “We’re doing the concerts other producers don’t do,” Kleinsinger says, “and in the process we’ve outlasted everyone who’s ever done jazz concerts in the history of New York.” You won’t want to miss a single event in this new season of Highlights In Jazz!

This study presents comprehensive real-world data on the use of anti-human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) therapies in patients with HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer (MBC). Specifically, it describes therapy patterns with trastuzumab (H), pertuzumab + trastuzumab (PH), lapatinib (L), and trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1). The PRAEGNANT study is a real-time, real-world registry for MBC patients. All therapy lines are documented. This analysis describes the utilization of anti-HER2 therapies as well as therapy sequences. Among 1936 patients in PRAEGNANT, 451 were HER2-positive (23.3%). In the analysis set (417 patients), 53% of whom were included in PRAEGNANT in the first-line setting, 241 were treated with H, 237 with PH, 85 with L, and 125 with T-DM1 during the course of their therapies. The sequence PH → T-DM1 was administered in 51 patients. Higher Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) scores, negative hormone receptor status, and visceral or brain metastases were associated with more frequent use of this therapy sequence. Most patients received T-DM1 after treatment with pertuzumab. Both novel therapies (PH and T-DM1) are utilized in a high proportion of HER2-positive breast cancer patients. As most patients receive T-DM1 after PH, real-world data may help to clarify whether the efficacy of this sequence is similar to that in the approval study.

This study was a pretest and posttest experimental research design which set out to investigate the impact of an Instructional Model Ekwale Ada's Instructional Model on the application of biotechnology knowledge by high school students in the Anglophone Subsection of Education in Cameroon. That is to investigate whether students taught with the Ekwale Ada's Instructional Model for Biotechnology Knowledge Application exhibit a higher level of problem solving in biotechnology than students who were taught without the model traditional methods of teaching . The Ekwale Ada's Instructional Model for Biotechnology Knowledge Application was an instructional package which integrated Inquiry based learning Hands on , collaborative learning cooperative learning , Demonstrations, increase in the length of time learners are engaged in activities, Scaffolding and Remediation. The target population was Upper Sixth Science students in the Anglophone Subsection of Education in the North West Region, South West Region, and some displaced Upper Sixth Science students from North West and South West Regions into the Littoral Region for the 2018 2019 academic year. The researcher constructed a Biotechnology Application Test BAT in the form of a pretest and a post test. These tests contained three sections An MCQ section, a short answer section and a section in which practical activities were carried out.The indicator of biotechnology knowledge application was problem solving in biotechnology. For problem solving, the researcher created an inventory for the respondents to attend to which involved identification of a problem in the society which can be solved by a biotechnology product Description of the problem clearly Statement of multiple solutions to the problem Selection of the best solution to the problem Statement of the consequences of the best solution and usage of the best solution to solve the problem. The researcher created a five point inventory scale which ranged from excellent 5 marks Good 4 marks average 3 marks below average 2 marks and poor 1mark used to grade the problem solving activities. The students who were taught with the Ekwale Ada's Instructional Model for biotechnology knowledge Application experimental group scored higher in problem solving than those who were taught with traditional methods control group with a calculated independent t test value of 58.28 for the experimental group and 1.40 for the control group with a critical t value of 1.96 at 0.05 level of significance with 70 degrees of freedom. The sample of the study was 72 science high school students who offer biology 36 students for the experimental group and 36 students for the control group . Out of the 36 students from both the experimental and control groups, 18 were males and 18 were females making a total of 36 males and 36 females for the whole experiment. The sample was obtained from one government school, one mission school and one lay private school in each region. In the North West Region, 24 students were sampled 12 males and 12 females 08 from GBHS Bayelle, 08 from St Paul High School Nkwen and 08 from St Michael's High School . 24 students were sampled in the South West Region 12 males and 12 females 08 from GHS Buea, 08 from Baptist High School and 08 from Frankfils Comprehensive College Buea . In the Littoral Region, 24 displaced students 12 from the North West Region and 12 from the South West Region were sampled 12 males and 12 females 08 from GBHS Bonaberi, 08 from PHS Douala and 08 from Mother Theresa College Bonaberi Douala . Therefore the sample was 72 individuals 36 for the experimental group and 36 for the control group .The study was an experimental study in which a teacher made pretest was administered to both the experimental and control groups the students of the experimental group were taught with the Ekwale Ada's Instructional Model for biotechnology knowledge application treatment while those of the control group were taught without the model traditional methods of teaching . After the treatment, a teacher made post test was administered both to the experimental and the control groups. The experimental group was located in GHS Mamfe while the control group was located in Progressive Comprehensive High School Bamenda. One non directional hypothesis was stated in both the null and alternate forms. The null hypothesis was 1. There is no significant difference in problem solving in biotechnology between students taught with the Ekwale Ada's model and those who were taught without the model. The data for the pre test and the post test for the experimental group and control group were collected in the form of scores. The data was analysed using the SPSS Programme. The independent t test was used to find out the difference in means of the scores of the pretest of the experimental group and the control group and the difference in mean of the scores of the posttest of the experimental group and the control group. The null hypothesis was rejected and the alternate hypothesis was retained. They indicated that there was a significant difference in the means of the post test of the experimental group and the control group. The result of the study was 1. There was a significant difference in problem solving in biotechnology between students taught with the Ekwale Ada's Model and those who were taught without the model. The experimental group on whom the treatment was administered performed significantly better 58.28 than the control group 1.40 on whom the treatment was not administered.
