Perusing the Paleocore playlist got me thinking about the album Phanerozoic II by The Ocean. It’s progressive metal so it’s very different from most other paleo/dino-centric music, but all of the album’s tracks tie into ideas surrounding their respective time periods. Could we still lump this in with the rest of paleocore?
Ooh probably!! feel free to reply to this with links so I can add it!!

Metal for paleontologists! | Metal para paleontólogxs!

🇬🇧
Looking for new music on Spotify, I stumbled upon this band, and it felt like I discovered fire! The Ocean (originally known as The Ocean Collective) is a German band founded in the early 2000s. Currently, they continue to promote their latest, ambitious, and comprehensive album "Holocene" (2023), discussing philosophical issues of more recent times. But I confess my favorite albums are "Phanerozoic I: Paleozoic" (2018) and "Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic" (2020). These conceptual albums explore paleontology and its questions. That's right! The songs beautifully delve into the evolution of life on Earth's System.
In reference to the concept of the Phanerozoic albums, Robin Staps explained to Roadie Crew magazine: "Although humanity is just a very recent phenomenon in the 541 million years of Phanerozoic eon history, the lyrics are obviously written from a human perspective. They are following Nietzsche's philosophical idea of amor fati in the light of the larger themes of Eternal Recurrence and the inevitability of an imaginary impending collision on a planetary scale, the two threads running through the albums Phanerozoic I and II."
🇧🇷

Holocene hits neither the highs ("Jurassic | Cretaceous," "Pleistocene") nor lows ("Palaeocene") of Phanerozoic II but it repeatedly smacks its face into the wandering mediocrity of the song "Holocene." The first three songs are everything I disliked about that song: unfinished ideas that feel like they wander to nowhere. I feel like I could start the album at "Sea of Reeds" (to be generous) and lose very little. That would still leave a 44 minute album, actually.
I'm disappointed with the vocals in a lot of places. They feel robotic or forced or both a lot of times, and I get that it was probably a stylistic choice, but it just feels clunky to me. I'm also not thrilled about the mix in the heavier parts. It feels both weirdly harsh and muddy and cluttered.
I liked Karin Park's part a lot. It's a really cool style to mesh in with The Ocean. If they wanted to do a whole Gothic post-folk-metal album I wouldn't be opposed. I also liked what I think were some melodic references to "Shamayim" of all things on "Subatlantic." "Subboreal," "Unconformities," and "Subatlantic" are all unambiguous highs.
All that said, I'm more interested in what The Ocean are going to do after this than I am in this.

@ruedadelafortunaprod Reseña por: @aletorres1987 27/11/2022 #metaleternopresentes Set: Triassic Silurian: Age of Sea Scorpions Bathyalpelagic I: Impasses Bathyalpelagic II: The Wish in Dreams Miocene | Pliocene Permian: The Great Dying Pleistocene The Cambrian Explosion Holocene Jurassic | Cretaceous Encore Shamayim Firmament (en Uniclub) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm9mH90pVrW/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

ALBUM REVIEW: The Ocean – Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic - Metal Blade
ALBUM REVIEW: The Ocean – Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic – Metal Blade
Consistency is the best word that can be used to describe a band like The Ocean. After releasing the critically acclaimed album Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic (Metal Blade Records/Pelagic Records) in 2018, the Germans come back with can possibly be a solid candidate for album of the year in Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic (Metal Blade Records/Pelagic Records). And it’s just that this band keeps…
