Phantom Blood Final Thoughts

Oh Jonathan Joestar. From the moment you appeared, you had my heart. You are so incredibly easy to like and have such a good heart that I fear it makes you one of the most boring JoJos. I can see how people find him dull since he is incredibly one note. Jonathan is simply pure goodness. He is justice personified and will always do the right thing. We hardly see him waver at any point giving him a Saint like status.

Contrasted to him is Dio who is almost comical in how villainous he is.

Dio is literally the person who will not only kick the dog but kill it in a fiery inferno. He’ll poison his abusive prick of a father, spit on his grave, and wax poetic about how he will take whatever he wants! Because the world owes him! Dio who schemes for the Joestar fortune and turns Jonathan’s own dad and the town against him. People may complain that Jonathan is one note, but so is Dio. They are the classic Good vs Evil archetypes. Dio becoming a vampire is almost an afterthought to his villainy. Like a little something extra for the hell of it.

I would have liked to see more of Dio and Jonathan growing up together. We are told that they acted nice for 7 years, but we never see it. I wish more time had been devoted to that instead of my least favorite part of Phantom Blood. Yes, when Jonathan fights Bruford and Tarkus, the two knights of Queen Mary. Both fights felt like a strange detour from the main plot. Particularly the fight between Jonathan and Bruford.

Then there is the young boy Pocco and his sister. That entire plot line could have been made tighter and had more stakes if Pocco was Erina’s little brother and it was Erina who Dio had captured as a way to lure Jonathan to him. Add in Dio wanting Erina to be his vampiric bride and you’ve heightened the tension. It also would have played beautifully with Dio wanting to take everything from Jonathan. Having Pocco be Erina’s brother also gives him more motivation to risk his life to unlock the door during the Jonathan vs Tarkus fight. He would have a personal connection to Jonathan while also doing it for Erina. Although having the siblings as merely innocents caught up in Dio’s villainy and Jonathan risking his life for them does play into the “he’s so good he will help anyone”. I still would have preferred Erina and her young brother.

The ending of Phantom Blood is just…heartbreaking. I didn’t expect to cry when Jonathan died, but I did. It felt so cruel that he was newly married to Erina and had his life taken away from him. Even in Jonathan’s last moments he thinks of the innocent and begs Erina to take the baby with her. Good until the very end.

Speaking of good, that’s what Phantom Blood is. It’s not bad or great, it’s just good. Considering it’s the beginning of a long series I think good is a perfect place to build from.

Jason cursed. This is on par for most of his evenings, as it was rare that he ever got a peaceful night. However, this? This takes the goddamn cake and smashes it on his face.

Red Hood stood, with a portable wet vacuum in his halo bed hands, cursing everything in the world as he cleaned and followed the small puddles of Lazarus water. The people in the streets give him a wide berth, having long learned the intricacies of Red101: if the Red Hood is doing weird shit but there’s no gun in his hand, you make sure you’re not the reason he’ll have a gun in his hand.

“O, you there?”

“Copy.”

“Mark this priority, would you?” His voice is tense, pissed. “Some bastard’s dripping Lazarus water all over my territory.”

A pause.

Oracle’s calm voice flowed through his helmet, “Then we’ll have to watch out for League influence. I’ll let the others know. Red Robin?”

Red Robin chimed in, “Yeah, already on it. It’s weird though, Ra’s isn’t supposed to be here for another two and a half weeks.”

“And how would you know about my grandfather’s movements?”

“Careful, Robin, I might become your grandma!” Red Robin chirped sadistically, before clicking off his comms, snickering at Robin’s spluttering.

“Jesus fuck. I’ll try to hunt down the bastard from the ground. O?”

“Can’t help you. The cameras around your area has been scrambled for the last half an hour.”

“Shit.” Red Hood tensed, one hand going for his pistol as the street’s current inhabitants wisely vacated the area.

“Hood. Don’t go in alone. It could be a trap.”

“Whatever, B, you’re not the boss of me.”

“Give me three minutes. I’m close by. Do not go in without back up, little wing.” Nightwing piped in, and Red Hood could hear the faint whooshing noises of a quiet grapple.

“Cass and I are close by as well. Staking out a place but we could be on standby if needed.”

Two taps. Cass’ tacit agreement.

“Got it.”

When Nightwing gets there, they follow the trail into a dead end with no sign of any scaling of the wall or secret passages.

“Fuck! What the fuck are we chasing, a ghost?”

“Don’t even joke like that-” Nightwing said. “You’ll set Red off again.”

Jason kicked at the wall.

“Fuck!”

On the other side of the wall, thirty minutes earlier:

“Life is like a hurricane, here in Duckberg…” Danny mumbled as he stumbled away. He’d saved his alley kids from a pretty serious mugging that ended with a stabbing that Danny foolishly allowed to touch him because he wanted to keep the wicked looking knife. Normally, he’d be able to brush this off, but with his recent injuries, mental stress, and the lack of food that is the hallmark of a homeless teenager, Danny barely kept himself conscious as he stumbled into a particularly dense in ectoplasm dead end.

“Napping place… napping place…” Danny mumbled before eyeing the brick wall. Yeah, okay, he’s slept in weirder places. He could sleep in the dumpster, but… he’d smell and Danny could not handle an infection. So, he went intangible, invisible, and pulled the knife out of his body. As he settled in (quite literally into) the stone wall for his nap, Danny manages to mold his ectoplasm to hold his cut up stomach together.

Danny allows sleep to take him, blissfully unaware of the glowing green puddles of ghost blood he’d left behind.

For years Baron Zeppeli had the most annoying voice in his head narrating things, and then he meets Speedwagon and it’s like “YOU!!!” And it’s on sight

meanwhile Suzie Q has no idea who’s voice she’s always hearing until Speedwagon introduces himself to her after Joseph’s funeral. “Oh! The voice in my head!”

Now is not the TIME voice so please for the love of all that is holy please s h u t -

this is the real reason the Baron hits Speedwagon so hard when he explains that he wants to learn Hamon
