Johnson & Johnson is currently, like right this minute, trying to extend their patent on the TB drug bedaquiline, keeping it out of generic for another four years. TB killed about 30,000 people last week and is the world's deadliest infectious disease.

If this drug does not go generic now it could affect 6 million people in the next four years (the time it would take the "new" patent to run out). Out of those millions of people who get TB, but can't get bedaquiline, most of them will die. From a PREVENTABLE DISEASE.

Why is this happening? Money. But also, because TB is not an issue in countries like the US. We can afford its $1.50 a pill price. But if you live in a poor country, that's too much money to spend on something you need to take for up to four months.

J&J needs to let this drug go public and do its job in places that can't currently afford it. They need to help people, instead of trying to wring the last few drops of money out of one of their many products, at the cost of human lives. @sizzlingsandwichperfection-blog does a waaaay better job of explaining this than me. I came across her name while skimming through my pharmaceutical chemistry notes and ended up spending the next hour reading about her: she's Tu Youyou, a pharmaceutical chemist who won the Nobel Prize for medecine in 2015 for discovering of artemisin, an effective antimalarial drug.

Interesting facts about her:

She's the first Chinese Nobel Prize winner who studied and conducted her research without ever leaving China.

Her father picked her name while he was eating a dish based on the same plant she would later study and extract artemisin from (what a coincidence!)

She traveled across China and met many experts of Chinese medical science throughout her research. She considers her discovery "a gift to the world from traditional Chinese medicine".

She volunteered to be the first human to test the effects of artemisin.

Her research began to treat soldiers during the Vietnamese war.

I've procrastinated my studies, but I'm glad I found out about this amazing women ❤️

Two options for a Researcher’s career

Stay in academia — explore my own research ideas, research topic closest to my heart, work on what I find the most important and overlooked  BUT: have to apply for grants all the time have to switch places and universities fear of career end every time a grant does not come huge stress from too much work not enough time for actual research

Work in industry — in a pharmaceutical company in my case, contribute directly to healthcare, make direct impact, have permanent job BUT: working on ideas of other people having to keep my inventions/research a secret and not openly share so anybody could use it the topic I find the most important will stay overlooked my ideas will not be explored I am not sure if that kind of work will fulfill me

Genuinely, I am not sure what to chose now. I used to be 100% sure I want to do my own research. I am bursting with ideas that nobody else could focus on! But lately I have been under so much stress that I am not so sure anymore.
