To anyone who has been rejected: don’t give up. The first time I applied for PhD programs, I got rejected from every single one. The only acceptance I received was to an international Master’s program. So I packed my bags and went to live in Ireland for a year. Here, I’ve made some of the best friends of my life. I’m making plans to stay another year and living with a friend. 

The second time I applied, I also got rejected. But, I discovered that my interests and career goals had changed. Both of my degrees are in English Literature, but I’ve awoken an interest in combining literary studies and film/television studies and I’ve learned I love looking at the intersection between popular culture and politics. 

It took my cousin five times, five years of applying, before she was accepted into veterinary school. Next year will be my third year of applying to PhD programs. If you ever feel alone or defeated, you are not. I promise you others are right there alongside you going through the same motions and the same pains. But we will get there, nonetheless. And sometimes, we will be stronger for it.

the prof i will TA for this semester asked to see me at the end of the week so i said yes, but that i would like to see even before that to have the info as soon as possible and......... they just basically just said "ok see you on friday then" like ???? can you not answer my request ??? i am not mad that they didn't say yes but to not even acknowledge my request feels a bit rude tbh !!!

Y'all. I'm super excited about putting together my syllabi for the upcoming semester. Not HP related, just saying I'm PUMPED for what I'll be teaching my students.

For any of you college students/soon-to-be uni students out there, just know that some of us (many of us) who teach you are unabashedly enthusiastic about what we do and teach.

A behind-the-scenes look at what I think about when putting together a syllabus:

What do we need to cover?

What readings are most appropriate and why?

How much reading is too much for an undergrad? (I cap it at usually 50 pages a week.)

Does this all flow/make sense?

Will this be engaging? (Especially since my classes are required classes)

Does any of it matter outside the classroom? (If no, cut it)

And then the inner monologue:

why can't I assign them whole books every week?!! (because they would riot)

it's absurd I only have x amount of minutes to teach x, y, z topics.

I wish I could teach x topic for literally the whole semester

I can't wait to see their faces when they hear about y

can't find the right reading for this - guess I'll have to write a book about it someday (not unlike fanfic, if you can't find it, you have to DIY it!)

So, in short, I'm having fun (and this is why Cariad's update will happen tomorrow please forgive me)

I swear every time I meet with my PhD advisor about my writing I need 5-7 business days to recuperate. She opened the document today and it was all edits and comments, my soul died.

I didn’t make it through my PhD program. I failed my qualifying exam twice. In the end it was up to my mentor to decide if he wanted to keep me or not. He decided not to. It was heartbreaking. I was incredibly depressed. I worked really hard, to the point of ruining my sleep, my health and feeling suicidal. But according to my mentor I was not “efficient” I felt like a failure and also extremely angry. I am not a citizen in this country, so now I have to find employment within 90 days or I have to leave. This is the worst time of my life.

It’s been around 6 months since my department made that decision. And now I feel better. I don’t know if I will find a job within 90 days, but I am definitely happy to not be a part of that blood sucking, demeaning, racist, sexist work culture anymore.
