Hi! This is a really random question, but what is, in your opinion, the best biography of William Pitt the Younger?
Dear @anarchist-mariner,
that is not a random question at all.
In my opinion the best “biography” of a person are their letters - now, with William Pitt the Younger, most of his letters are not quite so easy to come by.
Most (modern) biographies focus mainly on Pitt the politician while I find the man behind the mask more interesting. My favourite biography of Pitt is Life of the Right Honourable William Pitt from Philip Henry Stanhope, 5th Ear of Stanhope. He was the grandson of Charles Stanhope, 3rd Earl Stanhope. Charles’ first wife was Pitt’s sister, Lady Hester Pitt. Philip features in his book also letters from his uncle James Hamilton Stanhope and James’ account of Pitt’s last illness and death is generally considered to be the most accurate. A more recent book that serves as a good starting point and overview is William Pitt the Younger by William Hague. Hague was a high-ranking politician himself and he therefor provides an interesting insight in Pitt’s decisions while in office.
A book that I can not recommend (but that you should maybe read nevertheless) is Memoirs of the Life of the Right Honourable William Pitt by George Tomline. Tomline was Pitt’s mentor, part-time secretary and friend. His account however is a very sanitised version of Pitt’s life. Immediately after its publication, people remarked that “Tomline’s Pitt” and the “real Pitt” had little in common.
Another word of advice; look out for the alcohol. Pitt’s relation and dependence on alcohol is a much debated topic and that in and on itself is not problem, the tone of these debates is the problem. I think I have never seen a good piece of media, be it a book or a movie, that over-sensationalized his alcohol consume. On the other hand, all the works that I really liked, handled his consume way more nuanced and graceful.
I hope that helped and I hope you have/had a beautiful day!

Man in a Suitcase: Web with Four Spiders (1.23, ITC, 1968)
"Why me? With your name all you have to do is pick up your telephone, you'd be up to your neck in nice, keen, young Harvard-trained security boys. Probably drum and bugle corps to boot."
"Yes, and those photographs would be in the FBI dossier."
"Or a private one. I could make copies. See what they'd buy me."
"Oh no, you've already answered that. My name is Norbert; you are a discredited American agent. No one will accept your word against mine."
"Good. But I'm expensive. I call it my self-respect bonus."

Quote
You inquire about Monsieur de Guerchy's affair; and I will give you as succinct an account as I can of so extraordinary and perplexed a transaction: but without giving you my own opinion of it by the common post. You know what passed at first between Mr. de Guerchy and Monsieur d'Eon, in which both our Ministers and Monsieur de Guerchy, from utter inexperience in business, puzzled themselves into disagreeable difficulties. About three or four months ago, Monsieur du Vergy published in a brochure, a parcel of letters, from himself to the Duc de Choiseul; in which he positively asserts that Monsieur de Guerchy prevailed with him (Vergy) to come over into England to assassinate d'Eon; the words are, as well as I remember, 'que ce n'etoit pas pour se servir de sa plume, mais de son epee, qu'on le demandoit en Angleterre'. This accusation of assassination, you may imagine, shocked Monsieur de Guerchy, who complained bitterly to our Ministers; and they both puzzled on for some time, without doing anything, because they did not know what to do. At last du Vergy, about two months ago, applied himself to the Grand Jury of Middlesex, and made oath that Mr. de Guerchy had hired him (du Vergy) to assassinate d'Eon. Upon this deposition, the Grand jury found a bill of intended murder against Monsieur de Guerchy; which bill, however, never came to the Petty Jury. The King granted a 'noli prosequi' in favor of Monsieur de Guerchy; and the Attorney-General is actually prosecuting du Vergy. Whether the King can grant a 'noli prosequi' in a criminal case, and whether 'le droit des gens' extends to criminal cases, are two points which employ our domestic politicians, and the whole Corps Diplomatique. 'Enfin', to use a very coarse and vulgar saying, 'il y a de la merde au bout du baton, quelque part'.

Sam Claflin and Adaptations (there's a lot more than you think!)
Articles and interviews be like: Sam, you have done so many book adaptations and then name at most three titles. Every fucking time. Luckily, I'm here to tell you about them! (Under the cut as it got long.)
Hunger Games Catching Fire and Mockingjay (books written by Suzanne Collins) - YA dystopia. The most obvious, of course. Sam plays Finnick Odair, the coolest character. (He's not dead, Katniss is lying.)
Daisy Jones and the Six (book written by Taylor Jenkins Reid) - story of a rise and fall of fictional band in the 1970s. Sam is Billy Dunne, the main male lead and a real rockstar!
My Cousin Rachel (book written by Daphne du Maurier) - Gothic thriller, 19th century. Sam is the narrator, Philip. This is my personal favourite.
Their Finest - adaptation of Their Finest Hour and a Half (book written by Lissa Evans) - Drama with bits of comedy. Set during WW2 in the film industry. Sam plays screenwriter Buckley, a member of a film crew working on a film about Dunkirk evacuation. Also features a side character who is gay and is alive at the end. More people should watch this film, imo.
Enola Holmes (book written by Nancy Springer) - kiddie Sherlockian pastiche. Sam plays Mycroft Holmes, at least that's his character's name, but it's not the usual Mycroft; his version is dumbed-down and cartoon-villainised so that the eponymous teenage girlboss can have her story.
Adrift - adaptation of Red Sky in the Mourning (book written by Tami Oldham Ashcroft) - survival drama of a seafaring couple lost at sea after a hurricane. Sam is the main character's love interest, Richard.
Two mini series from Sam's early career (that I haven't watched so can't give you any info):
Pillars of the Earth (book written by Ken Follett) - TV mini series set in 12th century about building of a cathedral. This was Sam's very first role.
Any Human Heart (book written by William Boyd) - TV mini series, chronicles a life of a writer in 20th century. Sam plays the youngest version of the main character, Logan.
Adaptations of plays - it counts, okay?
Journey's End (play written by RC Sherriff) - WW1 war film, but not a regular one (there's no battles). Covers a week in the trenches in March 1918. Sam plays Captain Stanhope, an officer at the edge of nervous breakdown. One of his best performances, if not the very best.
Riot Club (play written by Laura Wade) - contemporary film about a posh elite club at Oxford. Sam's character, Alistair, is a spoiled brat, Draco Malfoy-like. (Not the good fanon version, the bad canon version.) Btw, this is no Dead Poet's Society, no dark academia - the titular club is based on Bullingdon Club (of which Boris Johnson was member). They book a table at restaurants, trash them and then hand the owners a cheque to compensate. You see now why we have all these problems...
You can make an argument for:
Snow White and the Huntsman - (folk tale recorded by Brothers Grimm). It's a darker retelling. Sam plays William, the prince charming of the story.
Snow White and the Red Shoes, (as above) an animated film, he voices a character named Merlin. No idea what this is as I haven't seen it.
Okay now I'm stretching it
Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides - adapted from a Disneyland ride. BUT the ride itself was inspired by legendary tales of pirates, among others the books of Emilio Salgari. So, not that crazy. Might be the weakest of the franchise, but Sam's storyline--he plays the missionary Philip--is what saves it, his romance with the mermaid is just the cutest!
So that's it. Thank you for reading and I hope you check some of these out.

Another childhood home of Lewis Nixon
Tumblr media
Here are two travel documents showing Stanhope, Doris and Blanche Nixon were living at 992, Fifth Avenue, New York City.
The problem was that I couldn’t locate 992 Fifth Avenue in today’s Google map. There is 990, 991 and 995. 995 is a high-rise apartment building.
However, some documents about Manhattan’s historic buildings showed that in 1920s,  990-993 were all luxury townhouses on fifth avenue on the opposite side of The Metropolitan Museum of the Art.
Tumblr media
(This photo was taken in 1925, approximately the time when Lew was living at 992)
992 Fifth avenue was a five-story marble-front American basement dwelling. This bow-fronted limestone residence was home to the Philip Livingston family since 1899. It was designed by architect George A. Freeman and employed features of the English Adamesque style. 992 was sold in 1912 and sold several times afterwards. In 1920, the C. & W. Realty Corp. first acquired No. 993 (The Louis Stern residence) for development, but it did not acquire NO. 992 UNTIL 1929.
In 1930, the construction company combined 992 and 993 and replaced them with a 16-story apartment building. So today the house numbers of that block goes like: 990 (high-rise apartment building), 991 (The American Irish Historical Society), 995 (high-rise apartment building).
The photo below was taken in 1927 (990 was the first one to be sold and converted into a high-rise apartment building):
Tumblr media
The photo below was taken in 1942 (by this time, 990, 992 and 993 have all been converted into high-rise buildings):
Tumblr media
As I posted before, Lew’s grandparents lived at 998 Fifth Ave. and Lew sometimes lived with his grandparents. It’s safe to say that little Lew spent many years of his childhood next to the Metropolitan Museum.

Doctor Ferguson Secy. to the Commission was Tutor to Ld Chesterfield at Geneva where I became acquainted with him_ he is a man known in the litterary world, and whose profound knowledge makes him very respectable_
John Laurens to Henry Laurens, 9 June 1778
I get inordinately excited about any mentions of John's time in Geneva.
Dr Adam Ferguson was a Scottish Enlightenment philosopher (among other things), and influenced the work of Adam Smith. And Philip Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield was one of the Englishmen in Laurens' Geneva circle - not to be confused with Charles Stanhope, Viscount Mahon, who was also part of that Geneva crowd.

Tell me some things you like about Mary I please
Sorry, this took a while to answer.
I really appreciate that with women (apart from Anne B) she saw past the matter of religion and was actually good friends with leading members of the Protestant cause, I am thinking of Catherine Parr during her reign and Anne Stanhope/Seymour.
That she saw the best in her father during the hardest moments in their relationship. The same can be said of her brother too.
Related to the above that she honoured the wishes of her father later in her life no matter what pain it caused her.
That she remained steadfast to her country and did not abandon it when she may have had more of a better time possibly in the court of her cousin Charles V.
I also appreciate she did wait to try Jane Grey and her accomplices until she had no way out.
That she welcomed Jane Dudley back into her court after the execution of John, Guildford and Jane Grey. She was actually quite merciful to the female members of the family of men that had been executed on her orders.
I admire her strength on so many occasions after Henry demoted her, the reign of Anne B, the moments during Kathryn Howard's reign (though not as bad as portrayed in shows like The Tudors), her brother's reign, the moments after both failed/phantom pregnancies, the moments that Philip disregarded her and was unfaithful to her and ultimately the moment she realised her dream of a Catholic England would not happen under her sister and heir.
I also really like that her plight and story is really understandable and relatable to the modern-day reader/historian. You may not like her but you can totally understand her motives and actions and why they happened.
In my honest opinion, I like how honest she was, I do think she knew politics and knew how to play the game for the long run but you can see the truth to her actions in various reigns.
In some things she and her council did pave the way for her sister and her council that are taken as Elizabethan accomplishments and should be Marian accomplishments too.
Also, side note, I am super glad we are getting way more nuanced portrayals of her rather than black and white portrayals.
Send me topics and instead of salt or hot takes, I MUST talk abt smth I like about it.

Best quotes on father
Tumblr media
Best quotes on father Best quotes on father, aphorisms, ideas, maxims and proverbs by various and famous writers, artists and authors on fathers. A hearty tribute to our dear dads. Father! - to God himself we cannot give a holier name. William Wordsworth That he delights in the misery of others no man will confess, and yet what other motive can make a father cruel? Joseph Addison When my father worked I spent little time with him. Then he got sick and so we spent several hours a day together. Then in the end he died and now we are inseparable. Carl William Brown Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. Exodus 20:12 Do not bandy words with your father, nor treat him as a dotard, nor reproach the old man, who has cherished you, with his age. Aristophanes Dad, your guiding hand on my shoulder will remain with me forever. Author Unknown A father is always making his baby into a little woman. And when she is a woman he turns her back again. Enid Bagnold When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years. Mark Twain If the relationship of father to son could really be reduced to biology, the whole earth would blaze with the glory of fathers and sons. James Baldwin Those who have never had a father can at any rate never know the sweets of losing one. To most men the death of his father is a new lease of life. Samuel Butler Death freed my father from his evils and unfortunately imprisoned me even more in mine. Carl William Brown Those who have never had a father can at any rate never know the sweets of losing one. To most men the death of his father is a new lease of life. Samuel Butler As fathers commonly go, it is seldom a misfortune to be fatherless; and considering the general run of sons, as seldom a misfortune to be childless. Philip Dormer Stanhope Chesterfield The father who does not teach his son his duties is equally guilty with the son who neglects them. Confucius If the new American father feels bewildered and even defeated, let him take comfort from the fact that whatever he does in any fathering situation has a fifty percent chance of being right. Bill Cosby At home my father always read the newspaper, which is why perhaps I developed this habit of writing against stupidity. Carl William Brown I believe that what we become depends on what our fathers teach us at odd moments, when they aren’t trying to teach us. We are formed by little scraps of wisdom. Umberto Eco
Tumblr media
Brown with his father Luciano in 2006 Be kind to thy father, for when thou were young, who loved thee so fondly as he? He caught the first accents that fell from thy tongue, and joined in thy innocent glee. Margaret Courtney What a dreadful thing it must be to have a dull father. Mary Mapes Dodge Noble fathers have noble children. Euripides My father always observed the laws, but he never cared to look at those who did not observe them. These were the two biggest flaws of him. Carl William Brown The place of the father in the modern suburban family is a very small one, particularly if he plays golf, which he usually does. Bertrand Russell You know, fathers just have a way of putting everything together. Erika Cosby To a father growing old nothing is dearer than a daughter. Euripides I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father's protection. Sigmund Freud To be a successful father... there's one absolute rule: when you have a kid, don't look at it for the first two years. Ernest Hemingway I bet that none of us has ever wanted to come into the world, and probably even Jesus didn't really want to, he was forced to, in fact it was his father who sent him. Carl William Brown One father is more than a hundred schoolmasters. George Herbert There are fathers who do not love their children, but there is no grandfather who does not adore his grandson. Victor Hugo Sons have always a rebellious wish to be disillusioned by that which charmed their fathers. Aldous Huxley My father didn’t tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it. Clarence Budington Kelland No love is greater than that of a father for His son. Dan Brown A man who is not a father to his children can never be a real man. Mario Puzo A father’s tears and fears are unseen, his love is unexpressed, but his care and protection remains as a pillar of strength throughout our lives. Ama H. Vanniarachchy When I was small I felt like a Superhero as my father threw me up in the air. Now after reaching this success peak I unmask – Real Superhero made me Superhero! Hasil Paudyal His father watched him across the gulf of years and pathos which always must divide a father from his son. John Marquand There's something like a line of gold thread running through a man's words when he talks to his daughter, and gradually over the years it gets to be long enough for you to pick up in your hands and weave into a cloth that feels like love itself. John Gregory Brown

Best quotes on Dads A man knows when he is growing old because he begins to look like his father. Gabriel Garcia Marquez My daddy, he was somewhere between God and John Wayne. Hank Williams, Jr. My father always tells me I'm not tired of calling everyone an idiot, but I tell him it's my favorite pastime. Carl William Brown One never knows anything about one's father. A father ... is a passageway immersed in the deepest darkness, where we stumble blindly seeking a way out. Roberto Bolaño When one has not had a good father, one must create one. Friedrich Nietzsche In the minds of women, fatherhood used to be considered a part-time job. It was something men did at the end of the day between parking the car for the night and going to bed. Erma Bombeck The mania for destruction was instilled in me from an early age, my father in fact built weapons and on Santa Lucia day I always wanted guns and rifles as gifts. Carl William Brown Being a father ... I can't help feeling that, by comparison with being a mother, being a father is a rather abstract business. J. M. Coetzee I stopped loving my father a long time ago. What remained was the slavery to a pattern. Anais Nin The worst misfortune that can happen to an ordinary man is to have an extraordinary father. Austin O'Malley He who is taught to live upon little owes more to his father's wisdom than he who has a great deal left him does to his father's care. William Penn You will find that if you really try to be a father, your child will meet you halfway. Robert Brault Why are men reluctant to become fathers? They aren't through being children. French Proverb A man's desire for a son is usually nothing but the wish to duplicate himself in order that such a remarkable pattern may not be lost to the world. Helen Rowland

Father Santa Claus The fundamental defect with fathers is that they want their children to be a credit to them. Bertrand Russell I was born three times; the first when my mother bore me, the second when I became Carl William Brown, the third when my father died. Mother would come out and say, “You’re tearing up the grass.” “We’re not raising grass,” Dad would reply. “We’re raising boys.” Harmon Killebrew A father is neither and anchor to hold us back nor a sail to take us there but a guiding light whose love shows us the way. Unknown Whenever one of my children says, ‘Goodnight, Daddy,’ I always think to myself, ‘You don’t mean that. Jim Gaffigan Having children is like living in a frat house - nobody sleeps, everything’s broken, and there’s a lot of throwing up. Ray Romano It is a wise father that knows his own child. William Shakespeare The hardest part about parenting is when I have to be The Dad--aka the Fun-Sucker--as opposed to being a friend. James Patterson It is obvious that for those who believe in the miraculous gifts of Padre Pio, including that of the gift of ubiquity or leavening, speaking of logic, common sense and sterile humanity is an operation of extreme and naive stupidity. Carl William Brown My father must have had some elementary education for he could read and write and keep accounts inaccurately George Bernard Shaw An unforgiving eye, and a damned disinheriting countenance! Richard Brinsley Sheridan That is the thankless position of the father in the family -- the provider for all, and the enemy of all. August J. Strindberg An angry father is most cruel toward himself. Publilius Syrus What harsh judges fathers are to all young men! Terence

Happy father's day quotes Fathers do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. The Holy Bible Ephesians 6:4 In peace the sons bury their fathers, but in war the fathers bury their sons. Joseph Joubert The father who would taste the essence of his fatherhood must turn back from the plane of his experience, take with him the fruits of his journey and begin again beside his child, marching step by step over the same old road. Angelo Patri The words that a father speaks to his children in the privacy of home are not heard by the world, but, as in whispering-galleries, they are clearly heard at the end and by posterity. Jean Paul Richter A father is always making his baby into a little woman. And when she is a woman he turns her back again. Enid Bagnold The amount of time we give to something indicates its importance to us. Jim George There are many famous people who thank Padre Pio for saving them from painful misfortunes; However, I have never been able to understand which saints should be thanked for sending them.
