MEGALODON TOOTH
Otodus
Pilocene, 2.5–5.3 million years
Philippines
14 × 11 cm (not including stand)
Megaselachus megalodon (formerly known as Carcharodon megalodon) was a giant prehistoric shark that roamed the open seas, armed with giant, serrated, razor-sharp teeth. The largest predatory shark to have ever lived, Megalodon was up to three times the size of its closest living relative, the modern great white shark. Because estimates are based solely on teeth and fragmentary vertebral remains, the upper size limits of these apex carnivores range from 40 to 60 feet (12 to 18 meters) in length, with estimated weights ranging between 20 and 60 metric tons.
Regardless of exact bodily dimensions, Megalodon ranks amongst the largest predators to ever grace the face of the Earth. With a name meaning ‘big tooth’ and a bite force more than double that of a T. rex, it’s no wonder that the Megalodon is considered the greatest predatory fish of all time.
This specimen is of exceptional size and quality. With a completely intact serration, flawless splinter-free enamel and its beautiful cream colour with hints of light pink, taupe and slate blue, this is a truly fantastic piece.

First you take the planet earth, round and blue and green and floating over Tokyo you drop a giant bean.
Put another one in Sichuan China what a shine. Taking off from Dubai to Hawaii at mach 20 leave contrails as you fly. Double back across the southern hemisphere over the Philippines once again to well Dubai.
AND THEN: Back to Hawaii drawing lines of latitude every 25 degrees along the way. And there you have it: Koro Sensei!

i would love if you'd shared everything that might be in aelin's list in a world away, all the dream places she wants to go or already went 🤧🥺
First of all - I am so sorry it’s taken me so long to answer this ask 😭
Second - this list is in no way complete. I could probably double it if I gave it some more time (and maybe I’ll edit this post and add some later) but I wanted to answer this ask.
Third - some things listed are cities, some are attractions, some are landmarks or monuments…it’s really a mix of everything. And some major landmarks that cover more than one country are only listed once.
A World Away

Description: “NCIS History-Special Agent Vietnam is a comprehensive account of naval counterintelligence and criminal investigations in Vietnam. Doug Hubbard's first-hand experience provides unique insights into this little explored topic of the war, and the addition of a broad spectrum of his photos complements the narrative with a real life appeal. In an era when the term "terrorism" was not yet in vogue, NIS' investigations of insurgent attacks against US troops is a grim reminder of current threats our military faces in Afghanistan and around the globe on a daily basis.” Michael Sulick, Former Director, CIA National Clandestine Service “Although the Viet Nam War gives up its secrets grudgingly, former special agent Douglass Hubbard unveils an intriguing account of U.S. Naval Intelligence operations in the Republic of Vietnam. Drawing on his three years’ service in Vietnam and his subsequent research and interviews, Hubbard weaves a masterful story with 'NCIS History Special Agent Vietnam' that is equally inspiring and frustrating-just as the war itself proved to be.” Colonel Joseph H. Alexander, USMC. (Ret.) author of the Battle History of the U.S. Marines “Doug Hubbard Jr. explores the seamy underside of the Vietnam War from his ‘catbird seat’ as a special agent of the Naval Investigative Service. At the most there were never more than twenty-one of these Naval Intelligence officers serving in-country, and they had to deal with an overload of such unsavory matters as counter espionage, sabotage, black marketing, currency manipulation, simple theft, drug trafficking, subversion, rape, and murder. Sometimes these investigations came to a brilliant resolution that Sherlock Holmes would have applauded. More often they foundered because of command apathy or indifference.” Brigadier General Edwin H. Simmons, USMC, Chief of Staff of the First Marine Division in 1970, former head of the Marine Corps History Branch, and author of Frozen Chosin: US Marines at the Changjin Reservoir “Doug Hubbard’s exposition with NCIS History Special Agent Vietnam defines a period of counterintelligence development in the Vietnam conflict and records its events for the first time. Compiled personal recollections of wartime special agents make this historical narrative a defining work in the legacy left by the group of Naval Intelligence professionals who devised rules for counterintelligence and force protection in the challenging and dangerous arena of Vietnam in the 1960s. Theirs was a monumental contribution to the U.S. government’s efforts to achieve stability in the Republic of Vietnam, particularly in the early days of the mission when much was accomplished by a select few.” Maynard C. Anderson, former Assistant Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Security Policy
Review - It was a decent book with a lot of historical information on the Vietnam War and NIS's members. The main problem with the book was how light it was on actual cases vs pages and pages of commentary of who was assigned when and where. Another major issue were the multiple misspellings (Viet Congo is a common one) and repeated paragraphs. It's not unreadable, but it had issues. But for the historical information, and a few insights into deserters, fraggings, and a few interesting cases, it's worth a read.

The Bungisngis is a giant cyclops in Philippine folklore. This giant is described as a large strong man who is always laughing. Its name is said to be derived from the Tagalog word ‘ngisi’ which means ‘to show teeth’. The giant is also said to have an upper lip so large that when it is thrown back, it completely covers his face. The Bungisngis possess a great sense of hearing and unusual strength. However, he is easily outwitted and frantic.
When I originally painted the Bungisngis piece, I had a limited palette available (pink, red, blue green) and decided to choose pink and blue. My plan was to use "soft"/"non-threatening" hues on an aggressive illustration to show a juxtaposition of the subject matter.

The Flying Whale
Personal Narrative by Jenny Park
The tang of salt spray filled my lungs, the rhythmic whoosh of the boat slicing through the waves a steady thrum against my skin; this is what I was waiting for. 3 AM may have been an ungodly hour to wake up for, but the anticipation buzzing through me had me wide awake and giddy as I sat in the rented van while sharing earphones with my sleeping older sister. Today, I was finally ticking off a bucket list item: swimming with whale sharks in Oslob, Philippines.
The ocean hadn’t always held such allure for me. As a child, it was a source of nervous tension, thanks to my mischievous older sister. Her penchant for playful pranks – pretending fish were nibbling at her toes, shrieking about unseen “monsters” lurking in the depths – had painted the vast blue with an undercurrent of fear. But today, that fear was a distant memory because for once, I was excited. Today, the ocean was an embrace, a vast expanse of possibility.
As the first rays of dawn kissed the horizon, painting the sky in hues of rose and gold, our van drew closer to the sea and I could observe people already up and lining to watch the gentle giants of the ocean. After hours of restless waiting, my family had gotten on the small boat that looked as if it could tip over with one harsh push. As the boat drew closer to the gentle giants, my heart hammered in my chest — a thrilling mix of nervousness and excitement. Then, I saw them. Sleek, spotted bodies, gliding effortlessly through the water, their immense size both awe-inspiring and humbling.
Slipping into the crystal-clear water, the initial jolt of coolness gave way to an exhilaration that coursed through me. I was nervous with this being my first time and all I could really think about was the rule of not getting too close with these creatures. However, it was at that moment when one came up near me that rather than apprehension, I felt awe. I swam alongside these magnificent creatures, their gentle presence erasing any lingering uncertainty. It was a moment of pure magic, a connection with nature that transcended words.
And then there was the moment my sister, ever the comedian, got a taste of her own medicine. Watching the whale sharks from the boat, she turned to me, eyes wide with mock terror, “Ugh… I hate whales” she whispered to me afterwards, her voice laced with playfulness. We both erupted in laughter, the memory of her childhood pranks a shared joke, a testament to how far we’d both come.
But Oslob was just the beginning. Our journey continued to Moalboal, with hours spent on the road in between just to see the place where the ocean unveiled more treasures. As we snorkeled, sunlight danced on the surface, illuminating a vibrant underwater world. Graceful sea turtles, their ancient wisdom etched on their shells, glided past, their peaceful presence washing over me. And then, the spectacle we’d all been waiting for: the sardine run. Millions of shimmering fish, a swirling, undulating vortex, pulsed with life, reflecting the colors of the sun, leaving me breathless and speechless. Although it was a shame that my eyesight is not quite the best, thanks to the locals who had taken videos for us, I could truly bask in the magnificence of the ocean.
The day stretched on, a kaleidoscope of vibrant experiences. We feasted on fresh seafood by the turquoise shore, the taste of the ocean mingling with the laughter shared with my family. Lush waterfalls cascaded down moss-covered mountains, sunlight glinting off the spray like scattered diamonds. Each corner unveiled a new wonder, fueling my growing love for this watery world.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in fiery hues, exhaustion settled in, a pleasant ache from a day well spent. Back on land, within the comfort of my sweatpants, the cool air of the van’s air conditioner, and the gentle music of my playlist ringing, I was lulled into a contented sleep, the sound of my favorite music playing softly in my ears.

Triumph in Christ: The Ultimate Prize
(Personal Narrative)
Last year, July 24-26, 2023, I participated in Plumbliners Youth Camp at Jabez Campsite, Dasmariñas Cavite. The group of pastors have decided to organize a church camp. At first, my father refused to let us join the camp, but my pastor, Romeo Catap Sr. Insisted.
I go to RoadSide Bible Baptist Church in Meycauayan, Bulacan. I'm thankful for the small mercies because the campsite is closer to our home, like a stone's throw away, as we're from Imus. Though our roots lie in Bulacan, our abode took flight to Istana Subdivision.
On the flip side, the idea of shifting churches never crossed our minds, as this congregation has been a cornerstone in molding our character. The Plumbliners, a group of Baptist pastors from various places of the Philippines, the camp. Furthermore, the camp served as a stepping stone towards promoting a deeper connection between the youth and God.
Upon reaching the campsite, joy came upon me like a warm embrace. A multitude of churches had gathered. Teams were formed, each donning a vibrant hue - yellow, red, blue, green, black, pink, and brown. Initially, we presumed that churchmates would be grouped together. However, fate had a different plan. We were separated, and mixed with members from other churches, like rivers merging into one mighty stream.
On the next page, destiny cast me into the folds of the black team. I felt the akwardness because of unfamiliar faces surrounded. Well, we are required to do the first task quickly after I met my other teammates. Our first task was to craft a spirited yell. Gratefully, I contributed an idea. It's said that my voice, loud and clear, pierced through the clamor like a wolf call. I am the loudest among all the people there.
However, a thirst for triumph coursed through my veins. When the Bible quiz began, I both wrote down answers and took part in answering. No multiple-choice category; instead, the challenge lay in identification and enumeration. A mental marathon happened, yet every hard work was justified. When we thought deeply together, we became good friends.
Yet, it was the pastor's sermons that left an unfading mark upon my soul. I learned that as a Christian, giant expectations are placed upon us, urging us to be a good example of virtue for our peers. To accomplish this, we can try our best in achieving a good performance in academics with combination of responsibility and discipline. Furthermore, good manners and showing respect are must-haves, no exceptions. Hence, I also learned to continue in the things that I have learned and also im abiding Lord's path. Through this, I'm not going to astray like a sheep.
As the curtains drew on the final day of camp, both teams and individuals received awards and recognition. Thankfully, I received the attitude award along with the decisive award. Additionally, I won the "gigil" award for my enthusiastic spirit and endless energy in the land of playfulness. Even though we didn't win the "best in cheer" title, we were overjoyed to hear about our victory in the Bible quiz.. With the prestigious bible MVP award adorning my name, the Black Team appeared triumphant. In conclusion, I'm thrilled by this victory on my first attempt, but my happiness comes from knowing I'm dedicated to the Lord, not just seeking human approval, attention and interest. Therefore, victory is not measured by numerous awards, but by the lessons you've learned and the application of your learnings in serving and loving Christ.

top 5 coffee Beans in the world
Tumblr media
If you like to know more, keep reading: Beyond the familiar duo of Arabica and Robusta, a world of unique coffee adventures awaits. Imagine Liberica, the rare giant boasting smoky-floral notes, or Excelsa, the high-altitude gem with hints of stone fruit. Intrigued? Prepare to delve into lesser-known varieties like the chocolaty Catimor, prized for its balanced sweetness and notes of citrus and spice, and the Blue Mountain from Jamaica with its rich, chocolaty depth. Each origin and bean unveils a distinct journey for your coffee-loving palate. Liberica Often overshadowed by its ubiquitous cousins Arabica and Robusta, Liberica coffee beans offer a truly unique sensory experience. These irregularly shaped giants, nearly twice the size of Arabica beans, boast a captivating aroma redolent of sweet florals and exotic fruits, reminiscent of jackfruit. On the palate, Liberica delivers a bold and complex punch, characterized by smoky, woody notes interwoven with subtle nuttiness. Sadly, this rare gem faces extinction, clinging to survival in Southeast Asia. However, for adventurous coffee connoisseurs seeking to support biodiversity and savor an unparalleled flavor journey, Liberica presents an opportunity not to be missed.
Tumblr media
Liberica Beans While Liberica coffee originated in Liberia, currently the Philippines holds the title of the largest producer of Liberica beans. It's known locally as "kapeng barako" and holds cultural significance, particularly in Batangas and Cavite provinces. However, it's primarily consumed domestically.Malaysia ranks second in Liberica production, mainly concentrated in the west coast's "Coffee Belt". Interestingly, their production outpaces Arabica within the country.Although Brazil exports the most Liberica beans, its total production compared to the Philippines and Malaysia remains lower. Additionally, Liberica makes up a small portion of Brazil's overall coffee output. Excelsa What's particularly intriguing about Excelsa is its naturally lower caffeine content, hovering around 40% of what you'd find in a regular cup of Arabica coffee, even less than a Robusta. This makes it a perfect choice for those seeking a smoother, less jittery coffee experience. Plus, its unique flavor profile shines through whether roasted light or dark, offering a versatile pick for adventurous coffee lovers. So, if you're ready to ditch the ordinary and explore the hidden gems of the coffee world, Excelsa awaits!
Tumblr media
Excelsa Beans Based on available information, the Philippines and Vietnam are the two top producers of Excelsa coffee beans in the world. Excelsa gained popularity among Filipino farmers due to its pest resistance and unique flavor profile. Nevertheless, Excelsa remains a niche coffee globally.Step aside, Arabica, Robusta and Liberica! Excelsa coffee beans offer a flavor adventure unlike any other. These small, round gems, often hailing from Southeast Asia, pack a punch in terms of the taste. Forget your typical coffee profile - Excelsa leans into the unique, boasting vibrant acidity, fruity notes reminiscent of blackcurrant and grapefruit, and even a touch of earthiness that reflects its natural origins. Some describe its aroma as subtly woody, hinting at its complex depth. Catimor Born from a blend of tradition and resilience, Catimor coffee beans are a unique player in the global coffee scene. This hybrid, marrying the disease resistance of Robusta with the aromatic complexity of Arabica, thrives in diverse environments like Vietnam, India, and Indonesia. Known for its compact stature and bountiful yields, Catimor has secured its place as a vital crop for many farmers.
Tumblr media
Catimor Beans Flavor-wise, Catimor offers a captivating journey. Expect a balanced and sweet cup, often marked by citrusy notes like orange and lime, mingling with hints of spice like cinnamon and nutmeg. Depending on the origin and roast, chocolatey undertones or a touch of floral aroma might emerge. Whether enjoyed as a bright filter coffee or a rich espresso, Catimor promises a satisfying and distinct experience. So, next time you seek a coffee beyond the ordinary, consider Catimor - a testament to both innovation and the diverse landscape of coffee flavors. With limited data available, Vietnam is widely considered the country that produces the most Catimor coffee beans. Catimor was introduced to Vietnam in the 1980s and quickly gained popularity due to its resistance to leaf rust, a major threat to coffee trees. Due to its high yield and disease resistance, Catimor plays a crucial role in the Vietnamese coffee industry, influencing the overall quality and economic impact of the sector. Countries like India and Indonesia are also cultivating Catimor, contributing to its global availability. Conclusion While Arabica reigns supreme with its smooth complexity and Robusta offers its bold kick, a world of exciting flavors awaits. Liberica, the giant bean, enthralls with smoky-floral notes, while Excelsa, the high-altitude gem, tantalizes with bursts of blackcurrant and grapefruit. Don't miss Catimor, the resilient hybrid, offering a balanced dance of citrus and spice. Each bean, a distinct journey for your palate, whispers tales of unique origins and passionate cultivation. Venture beyond the familiar and embark on a global coffee odyssey. So, ditch the routine, embrace the diversity, and savor the world's top coffee beans – one delicious cup at a time. A tri-spine horseshoe crab kicks up sediment along the muddy bottom of the Pangatalan Island Marine Protected Area in the Philippines. After a decade of restoration work to the islet’s bay, its green waters are rich with plankton and ready to welcome back bigger animals.
Dazzling Photos Show Horseshoe Crabs Thriving in Protected Area
In the Philippines, the tri-spine horseshoe crab has made a home and other species are returning too.
— By Amy McKeever | Photographs By Laurent Ballesta | Published:July 12, 2022 | Saturday 05 August, 2023
Horseshoe crabs are built to last. With spiky tails, shells shaped like combat helmets, and sharp pincers at the end of eight of their 10 legs, these ancient invertebrates have been scuttling along the ocean floor relatively unchanged for some 450 million years.
They managed to survive the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. Surviving humans may prove more difficult. Like many marine animals, horseshoe crabs are overfished for food and bait, and coastal development has destroyed spawning sites. But they also are collected en masse for their blue blood, which contains a rare clotting agent critical for the development of safe vaccines. The blood may be lifesaving for humans, but its harvest often kills the animals—particularly in much of Asia, where they are drained of all their blood rather than just a portion of it.
Tumblr media
A horseshoe crab hides an ecosystem within its shell. The hairlike objects along its body are hydroids—tiny, fuzzy invertebrates related to jellyfish—and there are at least eight shrimps clinging to the crab’s pincers. Horseshoe crabs are relatively unstudied; little is known about how they interact with other species.
Tumblr media
A tank-like horseshoe crab pushes itself across Pangatalan’s reef, which has benefited from the planting of mangroves and creation of artificial reefs. Members of the class Merostomata—which means “legs attached to the mouth”—horseshoe crabs are more closely related to spiders and scorpions than to crustaceans.
Tumblr media
Tri-spine horseshoe crabs have lost more than half their population in the past 60 years. But on the Philippine islet of Pangatalan, the species is an unexpected symbol of resilience. For years the island’s 11 acres were degraded: trees cut down for timber, mangroves burned for charcoal, and coral reefs overfished with dynamite and cyanide. By 2011 these horseshoe crabs, about 15 inches long, were among the biggest creatures left.
Now a marine protected area, Pangatalan is starting to thrive again. Efforts to restore its reefs and plant thousands of trees have led many animals to return, including rare giant groupers that grow to some eight feet long.

This isn’t an alien landscape—it’s an extreme close-up of the topside of a horseshoe crab’s abdomen. The gills are on the underside, and the dashes and indentations mark where they attach to the exoskeleton. The dark points beneath are minute spines that may function as whiskers do on a cat.

“Be beautiful or be shocking”—these are typical tactics used to get people to care about nature, says photographer Laurent Ballesta. “I think there’s a third way,” he says. “Try to show the mysteries. When you are in front of something you don’t understand, you forget beauty.”
Horseshoe crabs may not be as charismatic as elephants or pandas, but perhaps they’ll inspire people to care more about wildlife. Appreciation for horseshoe crabs has grown thanks to their role in COVID-19 vaccine development. Conservationists hope that regard will translate to stronger habitat protections and wider adoption of a synthetic alternative to crab blood—saving horseshoe crabs just as they’ve helped save us.

Golden trevallies swim above a horseshoe crab, hoping to catch leftovers as it digs in the mud for clams and other prey. As bigger fish slowly return to the reef, horseshoe crabs may no longer rule the ecosystem. But they remain symbols of its resilience.

Changes around Rizal Park and the National Museum of the Philippines
I passed by Rizal Park (Luneta) earlier and there are things I learned from the locals.
Tumblr media
The part in red is now owned by the National Museum of the Philippines. It was supposedly transferred to them sometime in 2020 during the lock-down. It was originally owned by Rizal Park.
The part in blue, the National Planetarium, will be moved to the part in red. Modernised and bigger.
The part in blue was transferred to Rizal Park.
The part in red will also have other buildings, other than the new National Planetarium.
---
The giant Lapu-Lapu monument was already gone, not even its frames, when I visited earlier.
They started to remove the Philippine map (in the red part) last week or so, which was noticed by a Filipino, which went viral last week.
The part in red was closed since during the lock-down of 2020 and was never opened since. Construction (or destruction?) only started, supposedly, this year.
---
Trivia 1: According to my parents, the “Sentinel of Freedom” (a.k.a. giant Lapu-Lapu monument) was originally a skating rink (quad skates).
Trivia 2: There was also an open restaurant owned by a deaf mute association (if someone remembers them, please share so I can update this) around the area in red. If I remember correctly they were located at the lower-left corner of the red area. They were serving in roller skates (quad skates).
The last time I saw them, if I remember correctly, was sometime mid-to-late 1990s, before they closed.
So… yeah… too bad I was not able to take photos of the area before it was permanently closed. #Memories gone. 😭

Semana Santa and Spring Break adventures
Tumblr media
Semana Santa (Holy Week) is a big deal here. Similar to the Philippines, also a predominantly Christian/Catholic country, almost the entire week of Easter is a holiday. It’s the peak of high season for the beaches and we were warned that it would be crazy on the coasts, but quiet in San Jose, so we opted to stay close to home and wait for the Easter Bunny ❤️ and then venture out to the beach the following week for spring break.
We started off Easter weekend with a road trip. We had heard that the crater of the Poas Volcano was gorgeous, although due to fog, difficult to see. And sure enough…when we arrived we were in the middle of a giant cloud. So we went for a hike and came back to the crater just as luckily the clouds cleared and we saw the gorgeous milky blue of the crater lake.
Tumblr media
That afternoon we booked our first coffee farm tour. Costa Rica is known for amazing coffee and farm tours are a popular tourist activity so we checked out the Starbucks farm near Poas and weren’t disappointed. The farm was gorgeous, lunch was great and we had fun learning about harvesting coffee on the tour. Kai even liked it! (Although she said the coffee tasting was ‘gross’). 😉
Tumblr media
The next day we went to Parque Diversiones (an amusement park) with another family. We had been a couple months back with my work for family day and Kai had been dying to go back. A holiday weekend when most are out at the beach was a great time to be there and walk on most rides. Kai got brave and did the roller coasters…and loved them. Watch out for Cedar Point this summer when we visit Ohio! 😳
Tumblr media
Saturday morning the streets of San Jose were a ghost town as the entire city seemed to have emptied toward the beaches. So I asked my triathlon coach to help me plan a reasonable route (one without crazy elevation…I’ve learned there is nothing flat here…there is elevation and then there is insane grade/straight up…). I’m loving getting out to explore on my bike. Feels like I really get to see more of the country up close from my bike. Many little towns have the cutest signs in the town square. I’m starting to collect photos of my bike with the cute town signs. ;)
Tumblr media
After the Easter bunny arrived Sunday morning and Kai tracked down all the eggs in the yard we took off for Guanacaste (the main/popular beach area). We booked a few days in a planned town/development called Las Catalinas and loved it! Beautiful beach on a cove, all walkable streets, and mountain biking with incredible views!
Tumblr media
I was toward the end of training for my first triathlon in Costa Rica and this was the perfect spot to mix workouts with family beach/pool time. It even had one of the most unique gyms I have ever seen on the beach. Flintstones? :)
Tumblr media
Kai even got in on the workouts and did an open water swim with me out to a platform in the middle of the cove. Go little person! The beach club pool had a great view as well. I did get a few laps in one morning while Kai sat at the end saying ‘mommy, are you done yet, can we play now?’ ;)
Tumblr media
It was a great mix of family time, workouts, beach and pool. We’ll be back for sure!
Tumblr media
So, first Semana Santa in Costa Rica in the books and checked off a few more spots on our ‘must see Costa Rica’ list!
