Panaginip: the Abstraction of Dreams
Tumblr media
Abstract paintings are quite hard to describe and understand because they usually have no definite or exact subject, unlike more realistic art. They often convey emotion through its use of colors or shapes, rather than focusing on a particular subject. Paintings such as Roy Veneracion’s Panaginip (oil on canvas) would be exactly that.
The painting measures about a meter in all four sides but with its height being slightly longer by a few centimeters (around 5cm longer). It generally has a smooth and glossy finish with some gold glittery details. The predominant hues in the painting would be shades of blue, violet, yellow, and beige. And the dominant color in the background is beige which is reminiscent of a coffee stain paper or parchment paper laid on top of the blue canvas. It could also be viewed as a simple beige background with blue triangular and wavy lines framing the top and bottom of the painting. This painting has neutral and plain colours which allow the other figures in the painting to be easily distinguishable.
There are about eleven visible geometric and biomorphic shapes in the painting that seem to fill in that negative space created by the beige colour. Generally, there are three large shapes (two geometric ones and a curved shape) on the sides of the frame in the painting which are the most noticeable. All the shapes seem to be floating in the negative space except for the two largest shapes on the sides. The largest one being on the left while the second and third largest shapes are on the right. In the middle, there are other smaller shapes in between the large shapes which helps fill in some of the negative space. The one on the leftmost side features a tilted trapezoid by 90 degrees that take about one-fourth of the space. It is outlined by a purple hue but is generally gold, yellow, and beige marbled together. On the rightmost side of the painting, is what seems to be an oval shape split in half lengthwise with only its left side and curve framing the right side of the work. Similar to the first largest shape’s colours, it also has gold, beige, and a tint of purple marbled together. Next to the leftmost figure is the third-largest which takes up most of the space in the 4th quadrant of the painting. It appears to be stone carved with upside-down B on the top.
Filling in some of the negative space in the middle, enclosed by the big figures, are about eight smaller shapes. On top of the “B” figure, which can be seen on the first quadrant, are two other figures that look like B’s that seem to be lying down right above it. The one right above the 3rd largest figure has an outline of purple with hints of pink and some wavy old lines inside. The figure right on top of it has a similar shape yet slightly bigger and has white and gray marbled together. There is a small triangle in the middle with ridges at one of its sides. It is quite reminiscent of a bright purple fan or shell with glittery gold details. Below the shell-like shape is a triangular figure that looks like a purple mountain tilted 90 degrees sideways against a square beige horizon. To its lower left, there is a smaller brown triangle with small dark brown lines inside, tracing its angles. Going to the second quadrant of the Panaginip, there are about nine golden parallelograms in the upper left corner, right beside the largest figure. It appears to be a set of stairs descending to one corner of the trapezoid. Compared to the other shapes, it is more rigid and has more defined lines. Still on the 2nd quadrant, is a biomorphic figure next to the stair-like group of shapes. The closest way I could describe this shape is to a slug. Apart from the fact that it is brownish-gold, it has a crescent shape with wavy lines. Lastly, next to the floating gold slug is a shape that is quite hard to describe other than the fact that it looks like a cloud because of the blending of very light shades of beige, light brown, and white.
All of the shapes are very distinct and seemingly random. Each shape seems to be independent and has a separate story or meaning behind its own. However, the way its colours give a similar atmosphere is the factor that connects them together and makes everything cohesive. There is still that sense of unity even though the shapes don't exactly fit together like a puzzle. It is similar to how dreams are. They can be fragmented and bizarre, yet are still somehow connected because they are united by an individual’s mind.
When it comes to discussing the paintings’ colour, Panaginip is mostly composed of complementary hues of blue, violet, yellow, and beige. The atmosphere that is evoked by the colours would more closely resemble a beach or seaside perhaps because of how the beige is reminiscent of sand, and the yellow makes one think of a sunny day. The hues of yellow are not very saturated and would be considered to have that neutral undertone. On top of this, the colors seem very cool and relaxing to the eyes because of the use of cool colors such as violet and blue. This is also quite similar to how the blueness of the sky and sea gives that fresh and relaxing atmosphere. The seemingly random geometric and biomorphic shapes give that puzzling feel yet the way the colours give it a sense of flow due to how it follows a theme and colour palette. Because of this, it also seems to give off that dream-like effect to the painting hence, the title, “Panaginip.”
The painting does not seem to have a particular narrative or meaning behind it. It does not give clues as to how that dream can be interpreted. Rather, it makes use of the elements to suggest what a dream feels like. The color combinations as well as the mix of amorphous and geometric shapes give that sense of wonder. Its abstract form also gives that puzzling atmosphere which most dreams are. Dreams, in general, are quite abstract and puzzling in nature; which is why this particular painting is a good depiction of what dreams look and feel like.

Under-appreciation of Philippine art
Have you always wanted to try taking an art course? It is really entertaining, you get to know a lot of tips and tricks on making your art have a little “OMPH!” plus you get to meet many artists on your way. What’s the problem? Oh, we’re in Philippines, a country that under-appreciates art, and many people see it as a job that doesn’t pay well. We can prove them wrong let me tell you, it is the power of social media that helps us young striving artists to be noticed, many people from around the world are always looking for artists to draw them something. Foreigners for example pay big money for a simple illustration, you could feed yourself with it for many months, and they say artists can’t make a living. I once saw a photo of a young digital artist, who bought his own display tablet ( which are very expensive ) using money from his commissions, there’s a proof that artist have a chance, and it inspired me to make this blog.
