Miles: And so I absorbed a nuke, and Phin brought me to space where I friggin' exploded! Fortunately, I survived crash landing in the city somehow.
Gwen: That's great, honey, but can you please go back to sleep? And who the fuck is Phin?

thinking about prowler miles with a tinkerer/phin mason in his universe
So in the insomniac Miles Morales game, we see Phin Mason, the tinkerer, as a bad guy who Miles has to defeat because she's "destroying the city".
But in reality, Phin wasn't really a bad guy. She was fighting to take revenge over Roxxon, specifically Simon Krieger, who killed her brother
This is why I think she and Prowler Miles would make a good pair
I think Prowler Miles fights against the Sinister Six (canon) because his dad was killed because of them. Something happened involving a sinister six villain which led to Jefferson's death, and because of that, Miles decided to take up the mantle of the Prowler with his Uncle Aaron.
This is very similar to Phin's origin story before becoming the Tinkerer.
Her brother, Rick Mason, was originally the Tinkerer. After he was killed, she took over the mantle for revenge.
See what I'm getting at??
Now, in Earth-42, which seems to be a very dark place, we can assume that the Tinkerer, if they existed, would also be fighting against the Sinister Six. Roxxon was a corporation that was fairly similar to Oscorp and since Oscorp is canon in Earth-42 we can assume that, if 42-Phin is canon, she'd be fighting to destroy it.
She and 42-Miles would probably team up.
Their tech and suits are also pretty similar. The purple, the digital masks, the vibes...it would be awesome to see them both in action.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They don't even have to have a romantic relationship. They can just be best friends who fight crime together. Two weirdo geniuses that have an obsession with purple and futuristic suits!!

I found Rick and Phin's graves in Spider-Man 2, and, on a whim, decided to look at their birth and death dates.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Up until now I was under the impression that Rick's death was recent in Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Like, it happened right before the events of the game.
He died in 2017. The game takes place in 2020.
Phin was alone for three years.

So let's discuss that absolute Disrespect of my girl Phin Mason in Spider Man 2 for the fact that her name is only mentioned like, one time. There's an entire Miles nightmare sequence that features everyone important in his life, except her. And then they don't even give Miles an option to talk to her and Rick's grave. What's up with that. Why are they doing my beloved like that

I want to be sympathetic to Phin and I do genuinely love how they’ve modernised and reinterpreted the Tinkerer, but I think it’s a bit rich her getting on Miles’ case for lying when she’s the one secretly leading a mafia gang and committing acts of terrorism.

Imagine a Spider-Verse X Vampire AU, in which all the Spider-people were vampires instead of having spider powers. Also, instead of Spider society being a multi-versal thing, it was a vampire society taking place in one universe.
It starts off with Miles in high school/college trying to learn about his place in the world, and he meets Gwen, the mysterious student who's secretly a vampire. Shit happens, they fall in love, there's conflict with Spider society, love rivals (potentially with Hobie, Margo, Phin, or Penny) and boom, we have a Twilight Spider-Verse fic.

Insomanic Spider-Man and Revenge
Something that's really interesting to me is the theme of revenge in the insomanic games, so I wanted to go game-by-game and discuss how revenge is used. This post is gonna b long so putting a read more
Spider-Man (2018):
In the first game we have Martin Li and Doc Ock. Both completely destroy their lives in pursuit of revenge.
Martin Li goes against the values he formed FEAST with, completely betrays everyone who worked for him. He hates Norman Osborn because Norman killed his parent, but in his attempts at revenge Li does the exact same thing to not just Miles but SO many other familes. How many people do you think he killed in not just the bombing but also the many shootouts the Demons cause? In the Devils Breath plague? He wasn't the one who unleashed it in the end, but he still planned to.
Doc Ock falls down a very similar path. He takes a tool that was originally meant to help and heal, and uses it to hurt. In his desire to cause Norman's downfall, he not only brutally attacks and nearly kills one of his closest friends, but also kills SO many people with Devils Breath. And, completely unlike Li, he feels little to no remorse for it. Doc Ock feels like the people who died deserved it, because they put Norman in power.
In the DLC we also have Yuri, who turns against her friends and coworkers in her attempts to destroy Hammerhead, but Yuri is less about revenge destroying someone and more about a "the ends justify the means" mindset. While she does have a theme of revenge in her story, I feel like its less present in her actual character arc. She less destroys her life and more takes her life down a different path. She recognizes that the system can't give her what she views as justice and so decides to take it into her own hands.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020):
Ok, Phin. We don't know a ton about Phin before she started working towards revenge, but from what's there: my interpretation is Phin ends up going against the values that her brother died for in her bid for revenge.
Phin's brother (his name escapes me) lived to help others, and the Second he realized his research was being used for not only capitalist greed but also harming people he wanted to put a stop to it. Phin, in attempting to finish what her brother started, completely loses sight of this original goal. She hurts people, a lot of people, including her closest friend, and almost basically sets off a bomb in Harlem.
Phin wasn't stupid, you can't convince me that some part of her didn't recognize the risks. She was so angry and so convinced that she was the right one that she ignored the harm she was doing until it was too late.
Spider-Man 2 (2023):
Peter's character arc in this game is a direct parallel of Doc Ock's arc in the first game. Thanks to the symbiote weaking Pete's self control, he wants revenge on Kraven and hurts the people around him in the process. He turns Harry's kindness against him, gives MJ the cold shoulder, and literally attacks Miles. He's angry and upset and he doesn't know how to handle it other than taking it all out on Kraven.
Similar to how the arms affected Doc Ock mentally, while the symbiote does affect Pete mentally the emotions and desires he feels are still very very real. In direct contrast to Doc Ock though, Pete is given a chance and he takes it.
Miles didn't save Peter, Peter saved himself. But if Miles hadn't been there and hadn't supported Peter, Peter never would've gotten rid of the symbiote. Miles said to Peter: "I know you're angry but you're hurting people who don't deserve this, you need to stop" and, unlike Doc Ock, Peter listened and took the steps necessary to bring himself away from that path.
Meanwhile, Miles ALSO has a big theme of stepping away from revenge. Miles' entire character arc in the second game is him looking at how others ruined their lives through a search for revenge, looking at his own desire for revenge, and saying "I'm good. I don't want to go down that path"
Miles comes close to killing Li at least twice. If he would've actually killed Li is debatable (I personally believe he wouldn't have), but there's two times where Miles has an opportunity to kill the person who put him and his family through so much suffering, and he considers it.
Miles wants Li to suffer, he wants Li to feel even a fraction of the pain Li made Miles feel, but by the end of the game Miles is able to recognize that that doesn't help him or him mom recover from what they went through, it just causes more pain. Miles decides that he doesn't want to hold onto that hate, that he wants to move on, and so he does. Which gives Miles one of the most emotionally mature character arcs in the entire series.
It looks like the theme of revenge is gonna continue into the third game, with Doc Ock wanting to make both Norman and Pete suffer, and Norman wanting to make the Spider-Men suffer. It's just really interesting how every game has dealt with this idea of the harm revenge can cause.

Spiderverse OC/Earth-42 OC - Parvati Mandali (Phin Mason/Tinkerer Variant)
Don't mind me, I'm just making Desi versions of cool characters again and inserting them into my hcs :P
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So previously, I talked about how cool it would be to have a Phin Mason variant on Earth-42 where Miles G. Morales is from, so I decided to make one!
Her name is Parvati Mandali, the same initials as Phin Mason, and she was born in New Jersey. She moved to Brooklyn beginning of freshman year and was enrolled in Brooklyn Visions Academy, the same time as Miles G. Morales was.
They're both very academically gifted, and because of this have similar classes, AP calc, AP computer science, AP physics, etc...
But, they hated each other.
They were academic rivals who were just constantly competing with each other, who got the better grades, created the better projects, just high school stuff.
Note: THIS IS NOT AN ENEMIES TO LOVER AU, THEY GENUINELY HATE EACH OTHER AND ARE CRAZY COMPETITIVE
But under the mask, they actually work together.
Parvati's older brother, Ravi, worked for Oscorp, and helped develop the process for the VENOM symbiote to properly link with other people. However, Osborne cut funding to that department, forcing them to work with fewer and fewer materials and on shorter and shorter deadlines. Eventually, mistakes were made and the VENOM symbiote was released, and ended up killing Ravi.
After Parvati found out, she went into a depressive episode, and was so filled with rage that she used her robotic genius to build gear specifically designed to be able to fight VENOM, and made it her life's goal to defeat the symbiote and destroy Oscorp.
Miles G., as the Prowler, also had a deep hatred of Osborne because of his involvement in the Sinister Six cartel. On Earth-42, people know who the Green Goblin is, but no one's actually able to stop him because of Osborne's wide sphere of influence and just fear in general. The Sinister Six was involved in his dad's death, and because of that Miles G. decided to work with Parvati, The Tinkerer, to take down Oscorp once and for all.
But they don't reveal their identities to each other, because they find it easier to confide in each other when they don't know who the other is.
Neither of them have to worry about who the other might know, who they might tell, because they don't know who they are. All they know is that they both want revenge, and they're willing to give up their lives for it.
They have a STRICTLY PLATONIC relationship btw.
Just thoughts <3
Lmk if you wanna hear more about her cuz she's infesting my brain now :p

Why I ✨Hate✨ Phin Mason
(any racism will be deleted <3)
In the Miles Morales PS5 game, we are introduced to a new version of the Tinkerer. Originally a one-off villain from the original Spiderman comics, the PS5 game developers try (and fail) to elevate the character.
First off, her personality. In most of the scenes, she is in with Miles, she’s just ruthlessly bullying him, this would be fine if it were a mutual thing but Miles just sits back and takes it?? Her entire personality basically dissolves into an ‘asshole that is better than Miles in every way possible’. The developers make her a weird tech genius, implied to be smarter than Miles and even Peter Parker in some scenes. This choice makes sense with her Tinkerer persona but (in my opinion) they kinda give her Ganke’s original personality and reduce him to a social media guru (refer back to the Thanksgiving scene at the beginning of the game).
In her FIRST SCENE (before we know her as the Tinkerer) she and the Underground attack a Roxon plaza where Miles’ mom Rio is campaigning. At this point, Miles doesn’t know Phin is the Tinkerer but Phin knows for a fact that Rio would be there (once again, refer back to the Thanksgiving scene at the beginning of the game). She is KNOWINGLY putting her friend's (and implied crush) mom at risk along with innocent civilians. And the WORST part of this is that this was completely unnecessary to the Underground's actual goals. Their real target was a truck containing Nuform of the COMPLETE OTHER SIDE OF TOWN, and since Phin is the leader of the Underground SHE chose to send a ton of her men to the rally, all while knowing Miles and Rio would be there. She then, out of costume, apologizes to Miles and blames the attack on Spiderman. HUH????
This bitch is dumb. And I mean that literally, her plan doesn’t make any sense. Despite the developer's attempts to make Phin seem like an evil genius, her entire plan falls apart once you think critically. Her goal is to halt the production of Nuform, a new, dangerous energy source developed by her brother, Rick. Nuform was also responsible for the eventual illness. Keep in mind that this illness didn’t kill him. While trying to destroy all the remaining Nuform, he got electrocuted (I think?) by it and then died in front of Phin.
(Apparently, this whole family is dumb ‘cause who takes a teen girl into a highly secured lab?)
Phin’s plan is constantly changing from the minute she is revealed as the Tinkerer to the final act. At one point Miles tries to warn her of Roxon's plan but she doesn;t take his warning and her entire plan falls to shit. And she has the AUDACITY to blame him for that!
And I haven’t even gotten to when she finds out that Miles is spider man! She accuses him of lying to her (which he was) in order to get access to her DOMESTIC TERRORIST ORGANIZATION! Did Miles lie, yes. But did Phin put innocent civilians at risk, including Rio? Yes! Phin needed to be taken down and she wouldn’t listen to anyone else instead of Miles.
The game wants us to believe that Phin is a sympathetic foil to Miles instead of the aggravating dumbass she really is. We see this in almost every interaction the two have. Miles is painted as a liar who doesn’t deserve a friend like Phin and is constantly apologizing to her, despite Phin being the aggressor and often in the wrong. Where ass Phin is depicted as a misguided girl with good intentions.
This is a problem because the plot of the game depends on Miles and Phin’s relationship, and if we don’t care about that relationship the emotional payoff at the end falls flat. Spoiler alert: the bitch dies. (DING DONG).
