I'm so excited to welcome @phoebe-delia to the library! I've loved reading her work for a long time, and am always especially impressed by the fact that she answers so many prompts! My favorite of her series is Eight Drarry Nights at Hanukkah time every year, which are always warm and so full of love and light. I knew she'd pick a great fic, and I think it'll be a sweet and romantic start to your Valentines season. Thanks again to @phoebe-delia!

I want to start out by thanking the incredible @thedrarrylibrarian for the chance to participate in Happy Hour. You do phenomenal work, and I just really hope you know how valued you are. I fangirl every time we interact and I am incredibly honored to get to do this.

Now, on to the rec!

When our lovely Librarian asked me to do a guest rec for Happy Hour, this fic was the first to come to mind. I still gave it a lot of time and consideration, of course, but at the end of the day I kept coming back to this story.

Malfoy walks across the grounds to the forbidden forest nearly every night, but falls asleep in class during the day. Harry can't get enough of him.

An eighth year fic.

Every fic of Honey’s that I’ve read makes me want to be a better writer, because their storytelling is so effortlessly rich. I always have at least one moment where I have to pause and look off into the distance so I can really appreciate a line and let it sink into my brain.

And this fic has quite a few of those moments for me. The descriptions here are so vivid; I felt like I was watching Drarry through a pensieve. I’m resisting the urge to quote dump here, because I think you should experience this writing for yourself in the way Honey intended it. It’s the kind of story that, in my humble opinion, can’t really be captured in a quote or two. It flows exactly as it needs to.

I adore how Honey characterizes both Draco and Harry. Draco has clearly changed after the war but has kept the same wit and fire that attracts Harry so much. And Harry is just trying to figure out how to exist in this post-war world without Voldemort after him, and it turns out Draco is a big part of his healing. It’s a joy to watch the two of them fall for and into each other.

I just looked back at the comments, because I remembered that I’d left one a while back when I first read it (which was, apparently, in September 2022? What even is time, omg). I’m going to quote from my past self, here, who called the writing “decadent,” and the story “fucking gorgeous,” “creative” and “special.” I told Honey that this fic would always have a special place in my heart. Clearly, my heart kept that promise.

I also told Honey at the time that the fic deserved a much longer, more intensive comment than I could articulate at the time. Turns out I needed over a year. This is as close as I think I’ll get to accurately expressing the way it makes me feel.

Plus, as a personal bonus, this fic happens to include some of my favorite tropes: eighth year, pining, and Harry’s never-ending obsession with Draco.

I hope you all enjoy this fic as much as I do (and that you remember to leave them kudos and a comment!) And Honey, thank you for writing something so wonderful that it stuck with me for over a year.

James shook himself, mind whirring with vague memories of his dad mentioning some family friend who was a cousin of Draco’s. He hadn’t thought anything of it at the time, and he assumed Teddy was, well, a child. Not some blue-haired, smirking suave sex god with dimples and an endearingly crooked nose who just waltzed into the kitchen with his tight jeans and sweaty shirt and opened the fridge like he lived here, while James stood there in a ratty t-shirt and boxers with snitches on them.

I had the absolute pleasure of watching this fic come to life, and it will never not bring me joy. Confident, ranch hand Teddy and awkward, sweet James? Yes please. Throw in a side of hot rancher Harry and matchmaker Draco, and this fic is the perfect feel-good read, as is its gorgeous sequel.

when was the last time you cried? Today lmao. Sobbed after work. It's fine I'm fine. It was a rough day and I wish I'd done better but I did my best and my coworkers were nice about it.

do you use sarcasm a lot? Not that much, really. I use it kinda rarely. It's just not my sense of humor (I think it can be funny, but it's not a comedic tool I use that much, yk?)

do you have any pets? No, but I want a cat at some point. I love dogs too don't get me wrong but a cat would be much easier for my life rn.

what sports do you play/have you played? I was a Tennis girlie. And by that, I mean I either flinched at the ball being hurtled toward me or swung and missed it entirely; that was during the non-competitive seasons. I spent the other half of the school year with my stomach in knots at the idea of going to PE every afternoon, where I would count down the minutes before I was allowed to go home.

Literally, the day I found out I would never be required to play a sport again was one of the happiest days of my life. I'm being 100% serious. I will never forget that moment. Just. Pure elation and relief. Top 10 best moments of my life.

how tall are you? Tall enough to kiss you on the forehead 🥹 (or give you a hug! Or a high five! Or just wave hello! I am respectful of your personal boundaries!!)

dream job: I'm already in my chosen field (I've said what it is before but I'm feeling a bit Internet Shy atm) but TRULY if I could wave a magic wand and have ANY POSSIBLE job known to humankind, it would be to teach a Musical Theater class at a college. (NOT a performance class, but like a history/survey kinda class). I would LOVE to get paid to talk about musicals in a way that couldn't impact a show's success (like it could if I was a reviewer or something). And I'd be such a nice grader, too, so the kids would love me. *sigh*

"I have a confession." Harry's eyes were bright, his cheeks wine-rosy. Draco tried not to look too long, scared he may never be able to look away.

"What it is, Potter? You walked past a cat in a tree? Don't sort your recyclables?"

Harry giggled as he swayed closer to Draco. "Worse," he whispered. "I'm glad Smith cheated on me."

At that Draco's head whipped around to face Harry fully. "Your drunken state would suggest otherwise." He had to forcibly keep his hands on the sticky bar, to grip his pint instead of tucking the stray curl behind Harry's ear.

"Nah, I'm drunk 'cause I wouldn't have had the courage sober."

"Courage to do what, Potter?" He glanced around for any sign of Granger or Weasley, to try and save Harry before he did or said something he'd regret.

"To confess." Harry looked at Draco as if it were he that was wine-drunk, unable to read the situation. "Cause all the time I was with Smith I was trying to love him, ya' know? Cause he said he loved me and I like being loved. But I kept dreaming of someone else coming and taking me away. Loving me properly."

Sweet Merlin, Draco's heart couldn't take this much longer. "Properly?"

"Yeah, you know." Harry waved his hand vaguely. "Hugs and kisses and 'oh sweetheart I love you so much.' Not, not expensive dinners and double dates with the Minister."

Harry paused, looking intently at his glass for a moment before pinning Draco with a bright stare. "I think you'd be very good at hugs and kisses, Draco."

With that he slipped off his stool, winding his way through the crowd to wear Draco could finally spot Granger and Weasley, leaving Draco breathless.

Now THIS. This is a good question, and something that is very much on my mind and has been for a while, as I am currently absolutely in the midst of this and trying to army crawl my way out. I don't have any magic bullets (is that the saying? idk) but I have been here before and i do have a small arsenal of tips or methods that I find can help me.

Here is my Fuck I Can't Write Crisis Pack (In no particular order):

Write anything

This is hardly groundbreaking advice, and it's also the hardest thing to actually do (imo) so do not beat yourself up if it takes a while to get to this. Basically, write ANYTHING―it can be aimless, it can be pointless, it can be crap (crap is subjective!! don't let the brain gremlins win!!).

Don't think about posting it, don't worry about anyone else ever reading it, just fling a few words onto a page and feel the rusty faucet turn on, proving to yourself that it still works.

Try and sus out what it is that's blocking you

Again this one is hard and annoying but functional. Once you can put your finger on the particular reason you're staring at a flashing black line on a blank page it can help you kick that reason off your lawn and into the bin.

And then, take it out of the bin and be kind to yourself about whatever that reason is. Maybe you feel shit because you're comparing yourself to others, your last fic felt like a lead balloon, you can't muster enthusiasm for what you once loved doing and fear that it's gone forever, you're projecting in a Tumblr post―whatever it is, it's something all the writers you admire and aspire to be like have felt, and been annoyed with themselves for, and so you can wrap it up in a blanket and put it on a shelf and be kind to it so it, (respectfully) shuts the fuck up.

(and remember, everyone feels insecure about their stuff. Like literally everyone, at some stage, feels like their stuff is rubbish)

Cheat on your OTP

Okay this one might not work for everyone, but it really does for me lol. Ruts (not the sexy kind) can often come with not wanting to engage in my usual ships, being annoyed by my lack of ability to fucking write them/anything/all my ideas taste like cardboard/bleh, and stepping out on them and reading something new can snap me out of it. Just, an injection of new ideas or scenarios or words or even just a little reprieve from being fed up with myself, which ideally, is why we're all here anyway.

(And then I come crawling back, and am welcomed with open arms haha)

In a similar vein:

Engage in media

This subtitle is genuinely terrible, i am sorry, LMAO, but essentially: find a piece of media that makes you go "oh, helLO sailor", unhinge your jaw like a snake, and consume it whole.

Let it nourish you, inspire you, excite you, making you feel SOMETHING, and then take that and think "fuck, what if i wrote bleepbloopblarp" and even if you write nary a single word, you've thought about it and that fucking counts.

It might be an album, a book, a song, a show, gifs of a hot person, the wikipedia summary of a movie, literally anything counts here if it makes you feel a twinge of creativity.

Ask yourself, what would Astolat do?

No for real. @candybarrnerd and I genuinely use this haha.

Worried your idea is stupid? Astolat would say write it.

Worried it's too weird? Nah, just write it.

It's dumb and no one will read it? Just write it for you *waggles eyebrows* (and then find out that yeah, nah, someone else will absolutely read this and be real fucking happy about it haha.)

Worried you're a one trick pony and have already written this fic before, like, and not even once before, and also you're projecting again in Tumblr post? WRITE IT AGAIN! As Astolat once said, "it's a fic so nice, I wrote it thrice".

It's good advice.

Make a friend or lean hard on the ones you have here

Misery loves company because it knows they'll come out of this together :). I know, I know, that's fucking NAFF, but fandom is all about finding like-minded freaks and blowing up their DMs because you saw a gif and now feel a kind of ways about it.

And lastly:

FUCK STATS!

I mean I love stats (yay validation!), but god can they make you feel like a worthless shit (hey where did my validation go :((( ). It can be really insidious, so piss that right off when it starts to fuck with your confidence or outlook on your own writing.

Hopefully there is something useful here, even if it's just looking at this advice and thinking "no that's shit, it's writing POISON" cos then you can maybe do the version you think is NOT shit, and that might work.

Pausing my RWRB reading (I have an ask about firstprince fics too and I’m working on it!) to answer this, which is the nudge I’ve needed. I’ve done this for Dramione before (under 5k), but I especially love tempting readers to Drarry.

Short works are the unsung heroes of fandom. They don’t get enough love, which makes me so sad, because you definitely don’t always need 100k to deliver a stunning story. These are your bedtime stories, your palate cleansers, your individual serving sizes of serotonin. It’s okay to enjoy these even if you only read slow burn 100k+ fics, I promise. Live a little!

This is a sampling of some amazing favorites, but I’m always reading new things and will add to it regularly. If you find something you love, I know the author would love to hear it, and so would I! Take a deep dive into their work to find other gems.

draco doesn't know how to tie his shoelaces. he never learnt it. he did it by his wand all these years but when it was confiscated by the ministry he went around without his laces tied. harry watched him trip and stumble for a while before he went to him and shyly, draco said that he never learnt to tie his laces. he thought harry would laugh at him. but he didn't. instead, he knelt down and tied both his laces for him and it became a routine. each time harry would show him how to do it and each time draco would fail to learn it. or maybe he did learn it, but harry didn't have to know that.

Phoebe Delia's 2023 Fics and Reflection

I didn't do much writing this year. If I'm being honest, writing has been very hard for me this past year. I don't have the kind of free time that I used to, and I've just had such little inspiration. It got to the point that I actually considered quitting a couple of times. I want so, so badly to get the kind of stamina I used to have. When I started out, I was writing 3-5k fics in the span of a couple months and cranking them out pretty consistently.

This year, I didn't add a single fic to the Drarry as Taylor Swift Songs series. I did a couple fests, a gift fic, and my Hanukkah series. I also did drabbles and microfics. I spent much of the year being SO mean to myself about my writing and my lack of progress. l all but forced myself to write my fest fics, agonized over them not being "perfect," and obsessed and compared the stats to other people's fics until I wore myself out. I wondered why I seem unable to write the longfics that my friends are capable of. I wondered whether I'm really cut out for this, after all.

Now, my god, please don't give me your pity. This isn't me fishing for compliments. This is me being honest and reflecting on the year, and I don't want any of this to come across as self-pitying or whining. My point is that I don't know what the future holds for me. I know that I love this fandom, and I love all of you, and I want writing to always be something I love.

I think I'm going to spend 2024 repairing my relationship with writing, and being kinder to myself. And so, in that spirit, I'm going to celebrate the work I did last year; because I still created things this year. And I'm going to be proud of that.

That said, thanks to everyone who held me up this past year. Thanks to everyone who read my fics. Thanks to my friends who kept me sane. In particular, I gotta thank @basicallyahedgehog, without whom I doubt I’d still be writing.

Harry presses a kiss to Draco's lips before pulling away with a pout. "I'm so glad you've got this opportunity, really. And America sounds amazing, even if it is just for a conference. But Godric, I'm going to miss you." Draco hums. "Me too." Then, he blinks and looks up at Harry. "You know. We don't have to miss each other." Harry frowns. "What do you mean?" "Come with me." "Wait, really?"
