Il grande pensiero

Riconoscere l'animalità nell'uomo, non solo, ma affermare nell'animalità l'essenza dell'uomo: questo è il pensiero pesante, decisivo, foriero di tempesta, il pensiero di fronte al quale tutto il resto della filosofia moderna viene abbassato a ipocrisia. Schopenhauer l’ha enunciato, e Nietzsche ne è stato l'unico esegeta autentico, verificandolo nel campo degli accadimenti umani. L'oscura radice dell'animalità, la cieca volontà di vivere traspare dai miti delle religioni antiche. La matrice indiana è evocata da Schopenhauer; il simbolo di quella intuizione totale, unitaria della vita è il dio rivendicato da Nietzsche. Dioniso ebbe una raffigurazione taurina (come Osiride si identificò con Apis), fu il « signore degli animali feroci », il mangiatore di carne cruda, il laceratore delle creature, il cacciatore Zagreus; il suo seguito fu di esseri a metà tra uomini e cavalli, di menadi deliranti, vestite di pelli di leopardo, che sbranavano cerbiatti e capretti. E in origine la maschera simboleggia l'animalizzarsi dell'uomo: nei komoi primitivi, i seguaci di Dioniso apparivano travestiti da animali. Il pathos dionisiaco è opposto alla compassione cristiana: mentre in questa la partecipazione alla sofferenza lascia integra l'individualità di chi sente la pietà, quello si scatena attraverso la natura dell’individuazione, e allora il tiaso di Dioniso vive direttamente, e non dal di fuori, l'unità tra uomo e animale.

L'intima dilacerazione della volontà di vivere si manifesta nella perenne labilità, nel tessuto tragico degli impulsi animali in lotta; il posseduto dal dio vive di volta in volta lo strazio della vittima incalzata e la crudeltà del sanguinario inseguitore: le due parti s'intrecciano nella passione dionisiaca. Nietzsche conosceva lacunosamente le testimonianze storiche sulla religione di Dioniso, ma integrò, sviscerò in modo totale il significato del dio, con divinazione folgorante. Nel cristianesimo egli combatté la falsa religione, la religione razionalistica, antropocentrica, che ha dato all'uomo una posizione isolata nel mondo, e per far questo ha rinnegato l'animalità nell'uomo. Da molti secoli i filosofi sono soggiaciuti alla maledizione di questo giudizio - e ancora vi soggiacciono - e hanno vagheggiato soluzioni segregazionistiche, razionalistiche (fondate appunto su ciò che appartiene solo a noi), « umane ». Descartes ci ha detto che gli animali sono soltanto pezzetti di spazio. Per questo Nietzsche, che ha usato ogni mezzo perché gli uomini ascoltassero da lui tale verità (divulgando Schopenhauer, che si era appartato più sdegnosamente), si presenta di fronte a noi come un «liberatore », per usare un epiteto con cui i Greci designavano Dioniso.
