TNG character dnd classes
to continue this
Picard: paladin/warlock multiclass. okay listen i thought about this one. again, all Captains could be paladins and Picard is very much a champion of Federation ideology and has all the moral righteousness of a paladin. however. consider him being an unwilling warlock after being forced into a pact with Q. there's so much potential in that. (also yeah charisma is still his weakest stat. look he didn't want to be a warlock, alright?)
Riker: fighter. Riker very much follows a Kirk archetype as someone who relies on both physical and tactical strength so fighter it is.
Data: bard. okay. listen. i could typecast Data as a wizard or i could rightfully recognize his artistic prowess and deem Data a bard. plus Data is nothing if not a jack of all trades just like a bard. while he might not be traditionally charismatic, he often focuses his energy on cheering up others and developing friendships. (plus there's a great joke in him being in the college of lore)
Geordi: wizard. all engineers gotta be magic users of some kind and Geordi is brilliant but also a pretty by the book engineer who uses knowledge to solve problems rather than instinct.
Crusher: wizard. much like Geordi, Crusher very much uses intelligence and knowledge driven science/medicine and tends towards logical thought so i think wizard fits best.
Worf: paladin. i have no argument because... duh.
Troi: sorcerer. using her Betazoid empathy very much has the same energy as a sorcerer drawing on magic from their bloodline.
Wesley: warlock warlock warlock. listen what was Journey's End if it wasn't Wes making a warlock's pact with the Traveler? he prepared all his life for studying science magic and then drops out and signs up with some extraplanar entities (wish this were me).
Tasha: fighter. i don't feel like i have much of a specific argument it's just true y'know?
gonna start typing up the rest of these and scheduling them for the next few days so stay tuned folks

I was tagged by @elephant-in-the-pride-parade.... 20 fic writing questions here we goooooooo 1. How many works do you have on AO3?: 58
2. What's your total AO3 word count?: 171,059
3. What fandoms do you write for? Star Trek: Voyager, Prodigy, Next Gen, Picard, Strange New Worlds... I've also dipped a toe into some other fandoms recently, but mostly drabbles.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Gotta Start Somewhere! (Trektober 2022) (198)
Rotund (113)
Postlude to a Kiss  (98)
What Happens on the Holodeck Stays on the Holodeck (97)
Kitchen Confidential (87)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? I don't always have a lot to say, but I try to at least acknowledge comments with a heart or a "thank you."
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Hmmm probably Just Another Love Story (J/C Workforce AU)? Most of the time I try for at least a hopeful ending but that one is a real cliffhanger... Forever, Honey, and Au Revoir, Mon Amour are also probably in the running (thanks, Whumptober).
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? As I said, I do like a happy ending, so this is harder to narrow down... but I think maybe All Things Bright and Beautiful (very fluffy Beverly/Kathryn fic)... or else maybe The Best Things In Life Are Free (J/C domestic fluff)
8. Do you get hate on fics? Not really, although I have gotten comments here and there where people are pretty adamant about how they want the story to go... even if it's not the way I'm planning it to go 🤷‍♀️
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? I will heavily imply it from time to time but that's as close as I get!
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written? Within the Star Trek universe, absolutely... And Beverly/ Kathryn is one of my favorite pairings. I also attempted a Doctor Who / Voyager crossover but ended up spending the whole time with Ten & Donna... who knows, maybe I'll give that another try eventually.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I'm aware of (except probably Chat GPT)
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? No one has but I would be open to it!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Did my first one very recently! Kathryn vs Coffee with @magdalenejaneway
14. What's your all-time favourite ship? Kathryn Janeway/ Chakotay.... even though I'm a bit turned off by Robert Beltran at the moment, I've mostly been able to disassociate the character I write with the actor! But I do also love Kathryn/ Beverly and Picard/ Crusher (TNG)
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? N/A
16. What are your writing strengths? Getting inside characters' heads/ working out why they did whatever dumb thing the original writers made them do because they had to crank out 24 episodes a season 😂
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Plotting out a story in advance, visual descriptions
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? I love languages but if I'm going to use another language in a fic, I will double and triple check that all of the vocab and grammar are correct and also make sure to provide a translation or enough context that one isn't needed.
19. First fandom you wrote for? Star Trek Voyager
20. Favourite fic you've ever written? Most challenging fic that I think I'm most proud of: Flecks of Light and Dark (depression focused J/C rewrite spanning from 'Hope and Fear' through to 'Latent Image') But the one that kind of lives rent free in my head at the moment is All the Wounds We Cannot See (Kathryn and Beverly meet-cute, post-Picard season 3)
That was a fun little trip down memory lane! I will tag (with zero pressure!) @madamairlock, @n-square, and @captainhattersvoyagerreviews... and anyone else who wants to answer the questions!

Two part Counselor's Son question for you because I just got back from seeing Ka for the 5th time and I love that you love CS so much (because I do, too)! First, what are your thoughts on each actor's interpretation of the character? Likes? Dislikes? Second, who is your favorite actor that has portrayed CS and why?
YAY my fave kind of ask!!
I've seen two different Counselor's Sons live: Marc-Antoine Picard and Jason Biltz (also an understudy once that was... not great lol). I'm familiar with Miro Lacasse's thanks to the recording and a lucky amount of footage from the show's early years, but my exposure to Spencer Novich is tragically light. At least we have Worlds Away!
Tumblr media
Miro's is just the classic. I feel like his is the consummate CS. He is a physical actor of the absolute finest quality, and he has to be to make this non-acrobatic character pop on a stage that huge. The emotion and complexity he delivered to the role is utterly unmatched. I think I feel so strongly because he took my most favorite approach - a romantic one - and the payoff was just incredible for the character and plot both. I would have killed to see him live.
Key characterization questions:
Do I think this CS got along with his father? Kind of.
What motivated him? Passion, romance, attention.
He was a dick, but to what extent? Massive, but with a sliver of willingness to reform.
Tumblr media
Spencer Novich said he was cast in part because of his "unusual body type," and I gotta say: GOOD FUCKING CHOICE. The Counselor's Son should be thin as a rail, which is why in terms of look I think Spencer and Miro are right on the money in this role. I don't know much about his interpretation, but from what little footage I've seen it's clear his CS is having an absolute blast. My guess is that he wasn't very romantically motivated - just out here to have the time of his goddamn life and look good doing it. I'd also argue his version had a little more than a bit of a queer edge too, which I'm sure was monstrously fun.
Do I think this CS got along with his father? Definitely.
What motivated him? Power and chaos.
He was a dick, but to what extent? Chronically, emphatically, and delightedly.
Tumblr media
Marc-Antoine Picard was the first CS I saw live and made me fall in love with the character. I went in knowing this asshole had "MY TYPE" stamped across his forehead and I tried to fight it but Marc-Antoine made it impossible. Unfortunately with him came an end to the heroin-chic CS bod, but it was also the arrival of Traditionally Attractive CS. Do I think that's quite as fun? No. Do I have general fears that Cirque increasingly waters down its more unique concepts and characters to make casting easier? Yes. Do I love him anyway? Duh. His stated inspirations were Marilyn Manson and Jack Sparrow and that showed in his work. I'll never forget the way he gripped the edge stage as it lowered during bows, as though he wasn't ready for the applause to end yet. Very CS.
Do I think this CS got along with his father? Mostly.
What motivated him? Power and performance.
He was a dick, but to what extent? Undeniable, with an extra dash of sneaky bastard.
Tumblr media
Jason Biltz just left the role and holy god does some poor soul have huge shoes to fill. He delighted in this job and it was obvious in every performance. His characterization is hard to pin down because I've personally seen him play it several different ways: big romantic, coldly political, and once with a weird little dose of conflict avoidance that I adored. I'm sad to see him go, but after all this time I'm just psyched to see the newest person's take (assuming they knock off the bizarre understudy parade I've been seeing in this show lately).
Do I think this CS got along with his father? Not really, and if he did it was begrudgingly.
What motivated him? Who knows. Depended on the performance in the best way.
He was a dick, but to what extent? Unapologetic.
So who's the fave? You know I don't know lol. There's rarely been a "name your favorite" Cirque ask I haven't found a way to worm my way out of.
Now I have a question for you: can you update me on the current state of the show?? Did you have a female Counselor and/or CS? What drives his motivations? How was the performance overall? I hope you can add show #6 to your list soon!

tng update time. last night we did "the child" and today i did "where silence has lease"
the child: GOOD. FUCKINGGGGG. LORD
first of all, i watched this after having been awake since 4am and working all day and then getting hate mail on my fanfics. i was so sleep deprived it's unreal. i dissolved into hysterics multiple times
the first time i think was after deanna got impregnated. i did say with my real mouth "i hope it's riker" and then regret it because i didn't actually hope that but truly i think we would have been better off
the second time i can't really remember. i think it was after the kid talked the first time. immediately my primal instincts screamed at me that the child was unholy and unnatural. anyway both times we had to pause for several minutes in order for me to collect myself
why did we have to have a meeting in front of all deanna's peers talking about the changes in her body and whether or not she should get an abortion...like im with worf, abort that thang, but what the fucj
at first i was kind of excited that dr crusher would be leaving because she is an exhausting character to contend with. now i realize i was a fool. with no dr crusher and no tasha yar deanna troi has to take on the role of Every woman. i made a joke in which the punchline was the mother the son and the holy spitroast but i don't think it's as funny without the leadup
also, on the replacement dr: i hate her forever for being mean to data. first mispronouncing his name and then being like ehhh who cares when corrected AND THEN being like wow this bag of bolts can actually get his feelings hurt! i'll kill her
am pleased to say i recognized her from tos not because of her face but because of her voice. score one for the ol' voice acting ear
anyway i kept going i be BEVERLY (upgraded from dr crusher) could have saved deanna's satan baby because at least she can FUCKING PRONOUNCE DATA'S NAME RIGHT. i hope beverly left because picard wouldn't stop making eyes at his ex it would serve him right
wesley was fine in this episode for once.
HIIII GUINAN HIIIIIIII wow she looks so young. just like in sister act, the primary thing i know her from. weird to have her playing shrink to wesley this entire time but i'm sure we'll get more from her later
anyway having deanna speedrun motherhood in 36 hours Because She's A Woman made me for the first time consider skipping some episodes on tng. but i couldn't do my skip/watch list that way so i will SIGH persevere.
where silence has lease: im blogging this as i go. first of all since the first few seconds of this have no dialogue i was excited and thought we were about to get a whedon-eqsue no-dialogue episode but alas. no.
secondly. "im worried about riker AND worf there are certain elements of the klingon psyche its best to be ignorant about" like girl are they fucking?? not quite but almost. riker was sooo dirty. paused the episode to inform cathy of this and got this gem
Tumblr media
anyway, the skeleton prosthetics were good but i ca already feel that this is going to be a "klingons are so big and scary and savage" kind of racism day
worf automatically gaslighting himself about the klingon legend is SO sad especially bc we as viewers KNOW its gotta be true. get vored idiots
why is wesley always on the bridge now instead of geordi...is he just always in engineering now? that is Too sad
THIS BITCH JUST CALLED DATA "IT"?????????????? I WILL KILL HER MYSELF
like i cannot believe she is doubting DATAS ABILITY TO DO HIS JOB more than the fucking SIXTEEN YEAR OLD sitting next to him just bc wesley is human and data isnt. ill fucking kill her. i never thought id say this but i miss beverly
jonathan frakes has asked lots of questions this episode
this freaky ass unreality void thing that doesn't actually exist is sooooo fucking cool. stuff like this is what i like about scifi...sometimes the scifi premise is stupid but sometimes it fucks
WHATEVER RIKER AND WORF HAVE GOING ON IN THIS EPISODE. IS GAY. riker telling him to pull himself together and worf repeating his words from earlier...prolonged eye contact...i wish tng was like this all the time
actually riker is kinda fun in this episode...he keeps giving orders without waiting for picard's okay and he is soooo upset when he gets back from that freaky ship
WHOA THAT CGI FACE WAS FREAKY AND BAD
LMAOOO AT THIS ALIEN GOING AFTER THE DR FOR BEING FEMALE. WHEN DEANNA IS RIGHT THERE. like "your contruction is different" not to the half betazoid or the klingon but to the WOMAN. well if anyone deserves it
wow. love that they got ordered to fuck nasty on the bridge <3 riker and worf should volunteer
SIGHHH of course they kill the random black guy redshirt
started to have respect for picard when once again he was willing to blow up the ship rather than submit to enemy will but then he ruined it by going eeeh idk riker how much time do YOU think we need before the self-destruct? like how much time do they need to prepare to die?? and then riker was like uhh idk 20 minutes? like if you're gonna do it just do it. jesus christ. don't even tell them first it's so much kinder. there are FUCKING children aboard
AND HES JUST GONNA SIT IN HIS QUARTERS AND LISTEN TO MUSIC? INSTEAD OF COMFORTING PEOPLE OR DOING HIS JOB? it's always one step forward two back with this show
THOSE FREAKY HALLUCINATIONS TRICKED ME...it's just like data to ask about death. but it wasn't him!!
the ending to this was actually a little anticlimactic but i did enjoy the journey. too bad it wasn't a big klingon ship eating monster though
one down, five to go 😤

7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?
I had a way longer version of this written out but tldr i think canon garak is an interesting character and i frankly do enjoy garashir as it exists with the show’s characterization but a lot of the fanon that I’ve seen removes the negative aspects of his character to fit him more easily into shipping dynamics. I’m sure a lot of it doesn’t! im sure there’s great stuff out there! but it was kind of the first things i saw so it soured me on him a little yknow. it’s kinda like the general cardassian bias I talked about here where I don’t think it does anyone any good to flatten this character when a lot of those aspects are so crucial to the premise and themes of ds9 and I just started finding it kind of exhausting after a while.
also I gotta be honest like I loved data while watching tng but the franchise kinda wore me out on him without the fans needing to do it when they made him and picard the main characters of star trek 8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about
ok this one is really subjective but in light of i just found a giant fucking cockroach on my toothbrush amidst some other shit happening I’m doing my best. I don’t think the quippy middle aged white men characters are as good as people think they are? like I don’t hate pike but I don’t wildly enjoy him either (in s1 he often kind of felt like the weak link to me) and I think shaw was very overhyped given that 90% of what he did was be discriminatory towards seven. I just think the writing for them tends to be weaker than they could get away with if they weren’t middle aged white men with solid actors. idk this isn’t like a You’re Wrong so much as it’s a cry for help I just don’t really get it 13. answered!

josh–[I am shot]. no but actually uhhh beverly
Tumblr media
*sits down* ok i had to regain myself for a minute i am getting very carried away by these asks. i’m feeling the star trek character insanity taking over shaking and am like a little chihuahua. anyway. beverly .
beverly got done over so terribly by tng and especially got done the worst with the picard disease. in that characters will lose any plot/arcs of their own so we can focus on their relationship with picard and by the end of tng… that’s like alll she was doing it’s so infuriating. because she IS such a good character and has so much going on for her but we DONT GET TO SEE IT CUZ WE JUST GOTTA FOCUS ON HER REALTIONSHIP WITH PICARD 😐 like… we only get crumbs about her life before the enterprise or family or you know how her husbands death affected her .
anyway. she’s the best fucking ever i love how casual she is with all the senior officers and how she switches between fun and friendly and super professional and serious when the need arises. i loved all her interactions with everyone during poker games + how she’s one of the only crew members to use everyone first names LIKE YES. she seems like a really good CMO and all her background interactions with lt. ogawa through the show really reenforce her as a really good officer to work under. like medbay truly seems like the chillest place to work on the ship because she’s such a good boss. and you do get to see a lot of her hobbies outside of the ship which i love. she is the only character i will exonerate for being a theater kid cuz it’s beverly. she can do whatevr.
you also get to see her in command command a few times and everytime it’s like. FUCK YES FOR REAL. the finale version of her where she was the captain of her own ship and also divorced picard… best beverly ever in any universe ever. she often gets reduced to “the rational one” when people talk about her but i also respect how ready she is to go fucking insane at any moment. like in remember me in bev mania monday or in disasters when she just decides to vent the cargo bay atmosphere out #girl or when she flew that ship into the sun… literally she can do whatever. awesome af.
it’s just like. sigh. she could’ve been so much more . and it’s funny cuz on one hand she was just reduced to the “mother” character.. andthen they didn’t do anything with her relationship with wesley at all.. well it’s not funny cuz it just makes me upset on how poorly the show handles the crushers for real. 😐 and NOW since she’s gonna be back in season 3 picard .. the way you know she’s just gonna be reduced to a little picard romance again. 😐

So thank you to @sal-absinthii for tagging me in this list of 10 characters in 10 fandoms.
To start off, gotta go with the Big M:
1: Megatron - Transformers (IDW1.0 continuity as the best incarnation to date, but I also really love both the Fall of Cybertron and Prime versions of him too)
At close second is:
2: Fëanor - The Silmarillion (I don’t care what you say, he did nothing wrong cause no one else was trying to stop Morgoth. The Telari should’ve given him those damn boats.)
3: The 8th Doctor - Doctor Who (I tended to waver back and forth on which of the revived Who Doctors were my favorite [not counting 11] while always wondering what the show would’ve been like had the TV movie actually worked at reviving the series in the 90s. But then I found out that Paul McGann and his silky honey voice reprised the role of the 8th Doctor in audio dramas from Big Finish well before the show returned on BBC tv. And yeah, without a doubt 8 is the best Doctor and has phenomenal writing, and also has the honor of being the first Doctor to have a trans companion played by a trans actor in the recently concluded Stranded story arc series of stories. 8’s just the best and always needs a hug cause he’s basically what would happen if you took all of the Doctor’s hope, love, joy, enthusiasm, excitement, and curiosity and made a person out of those emotions.)
4: Jaina Solo - Star Wars (yes, I know she’s not technically part of the current canon anymore but Jaina is just the absolute best and I love her and she deserves the Galaxy. I’m still waiting for them to finally let her book trilogy be uncancelled and get written.)
5: Benjamin Sisko - Star Trek (in the debate of who is the best captain, it always unjustly becomes a Kirk vs Picard kind of thing, but while Picard is indeed better as a captain than Kirk, Picard is the kind of officer you want to serve on while inside the Federation. Once you’re out on the frontier or beyond? You need someone with the flexibility and morality/lives over Starfleet regulations, duty, and honor. Besides, he’s the Space Dad that keeps the DS9 polycule alive cause he’s the only one with a brain cell.)
6: The Rookie - Halo (well before Doom got revived in 2016, Halo had already made a game where your silent protagonist had beautiful characterization purely through his body language alone. Halo 3: ODST is a beautiful game with an amazing environment and a really great player character that you can just feel the loneliness through his body language as he works his way through an alien occupied and dead city trying to find his unit, while also seeing sparks of exasperation and playfulness at times without a single word being spoken. I will never forgive 343 Industries for killing him off in a flashback in a book instead of giving him the sequel we all wanted.)
7: Isaac Clarke - Dead Space (Dead Space is the kind of game I never expected, horror in space while allowing you to live your starship engineer dream. Like, yeah dealing with the terrifying cosmic horror truth of the Necromorphs and Brethren Moons is my kind of story, but I found I really really loved the parts where eternally tired engineer Isaac Clarke comes up with on the fly ways to keep space ships and space stations going and in the sky while fighting hordes of monsters. Especially that 200 year old derelict fleet section where you get to fly through like four or five different ship wrecks getting what things you can turn back online, well, online lol)
8: William Adama - Battlestar Galactica (what more can be said about Commander-turned-Admiral Adama? Sometimes you gotta roll a hard six and he did so every time. Not many people could lead the survivors of humanity through the stars to build a new home and future after a twelve-planet-wide robot induced nuclear apocalypse, but he sure did)
9: Loghain MacTir - Dragon Age (oh boy this is a character. You meet him as the main human antagonist in Dragon Age Origins as you try to unify the nation of Ferelden against the Blight and its Darkspawn hordes. He seems a typical fantasy bad guy human but the more you learn about him the more complex and tragic he becomes. He was once a peasant during the imperial occupation of Ferelden by neighboring Orlais and its fantasy French people, who rose up and joined the rebellion of the deposed prince and helped liberate his homeland from truly barbaric oppression. And that oppression scarred him for life. At one point he had to sacrifice a whole army to rescue said prince, his best friend, but was forced to promise to Maric that he would never again sacrifice an army to save one person not even if that person was a king. This places his retreat from the field of battle at the start of DAO in a different light than what you initially are led to believe. Cause his leaving the field allows for the current king, Cailan, son of the deceased Maric, to die at the hands of the Darkspawn in what was a hopeless battle. Loghain keeping that promise to Maric saves the lives of his part of the army, but is viewed by everyone else after as betrayal of the crown. He also comes to fear that Orlais will return and so instead of fighting the Blight he tries to solidify his regency against a hypothetical return of the imperial occupier. And so he has to be beaten and humiliated by you as you topple him from power less his actions doom the nation. After doing so you have the choice to kill him or recruit him into the Grey Wardens which is a life long sentence of protecting the world from the Darkspawn. If you do that, he returns in the third game as the only Warden not corrupted by the magic of the big bad and who can either sacrifice his life in battle to atone for the Wardens being overcome, or you can sacrifice someone else and keep Loghain alive still so he can continue his penance for what he did in Ferelden during the Blight. You also learn from his daughter that when his wife’s roses died he rode to the other side of the country to buy her a new rose bush but didn’t know how to safely transport it on horseback so he silently held the thorny bush in his bare hands for the whole ride back home, thorns piercing his hands all the way, simply cause he loved his wife and wanted her to have her flowers.)
10: Tali Zorah - Mass Effect (what else is there to say about Tali other than that she is the Space Wife? Nothing else need be said cause that says it all)
Tagging @cblgblog @fantastic-fantasy-fanfics and @thefingerfuckingfemalefury for this.

The Star Trek Generations Review I Posted on Letterboxd Earlier
Cuz I know y’all like Star Trek!
Yeah it’s not very good. I think most of the TNG flicks are a mixed bag at best and while this isn’t the worst, it’s a mess and really rough at times. I would, however, be remiss if I didn’t point out the nuggets of good ideas mixed in here, and I think the best is Picard’s arc. Picard is confronted with a traumatic event in his Brother and Nephew dying off screen, leaving him the last of the Picards. I think his knee-jerk to immediately regretting not raising a family of his own is a little abrupt given his reputation for hating all children, but it is sensible in the face of a great tragedy. And once within the Nexus he’s tempted with his own zoo of kids. It’s what he wants at that moment. And the resolution is a wise choice. Picard doesn’t end the film with any sort of child, surrogate or otherwise, but just a renewed appreciation of his life and decisions. You will always have regrets, so it’s important to treasure the decisions you’ve made. Yes, it isn’t the most revolutionary statement, even within Star Trek which already has many movies about getting old, but it is effective.
The same motif is played with Kirk. And it’s much worse. Kirk seems to regret his whole life as a Starfleet Officer, in the Nexus living out the moment he told his lover he would reenlist in Starfleet, effectively dooming that relationship and setting him on the course to all the adventures we know and love. Only this time he stays with her, casting Starfleet to the side. Star Trek? Fuck that! It’s a character decision that not only clashes with how Kirk had been developed over the last 4.5 films, it doesn’t even develop naturally within Generations. Kirk’s whole journey starts because he finds out Sulu managed to raise a family*. But we know that it was never an either or decision because Sulu was in all those movies doing the Starfleet thing! Hell, in the opening sequence we even see Kirk still striving to get into the action of the Captain’s seat. This is not a character that comes off as regretting being a Starfleet Captain. And to make matters worse, the woman he gives it all up for is literally never mentioned before the final act of this film. If you’re going to make one of the iconic heroes of screen give up everything that makes him heroic, you should let the audience understand what he’s doing so for. Hell, if they didn’t want to spend time developing another character, they could have referenced someone from a previous episode or movie, like Carol Marcus, since this movie expects you to have seen every previous Star Trek anyway.
That last sentence is really what pushes this movie from an eh Star Trek film to a bad one. So many TNG plots are tied off in this. On one hand, yeah it is rewarding for fans. Just because it’s going to the cinema for general audiences doesn’t mean they need to abandon plotlines the Trekkies have been following for seven years. But they take so many of these and while they try to recap the broad details for anyone who missed an episode or just plain forgot about them, it diminishes the impact everything has. All the references to El-Aurians and the Borg feel simultaneously integral to this plot and not nearly developed enough for us to really connect with the Sorin character. Same with the references to Picard’s family. But all the other stuff? Save it for other movies! Like the Duras sisters didn’t really need to be here, and they barely even remind you what their agenda is beyond “Klingon nonsense.” The Emotion Chip? Yeah, doesn’t connect to the main plot at all. You gotta have Riker because he’s main cast, but he has nothing to do here. I’m shocked Q didn’t stop by just to say Hi.
All of this complicates a plot that barely has legs anyway. The basic premise, guy is obsessed with getting back to the Nexus to get away from his tortured ending existance, is reasonable enough as a plot. Him kidnapping Geordi and probing him for information about Trilithium? Absolutely pointless. Sorin already knows how Trilithium works and he has no reason to assume he can use his VISOR to spy on the Enterprise. Then they get into a needlessly confusing prisoner exchange scene and patience is tested. About getting into the Nexus. I’ll buy that yes he has a missile that can shoot into the sun in 11 seconds and that for some reason he can’t fly into the Nexus but can stand on a planet being annihilated by it because reasons. It’s at least addressed. Sorin’s method of moving the Nexus ribbon by destroying stars fucking with Gravity. They could dwell on the ramifications a little more but it’s a cool concept. Here’s what’s dumb though: If they don’t stop Sorin they get sucked into the Nexus. And that happens. The nature of the Nexus is it is a place without time, so you can exit it at any point. Even ignoring the stupid idea to pop out just seconds earlier instead of days where they could have saved more lives. The issue I have here is that, there is no tension. You fail to stop him? You go to the Nexus. Where you can leave whenever. So you can try to stop him again. And if you fail that time? You go to the Nexus, leave, try again. And on and on. They would have infinite chances to stop him so… who cares? Picard and Kirk literally cannot lose….
So there you have it. It’s stupid mess of a movie that tries 9 million things and only kind of succeeds at one. If it weren’t for Nemesis existing it would easily be the worst TNG flick. I’ll still take its attempts at life philosophy over anything in the Abrams films, but it’s just not a good successor for either TNG the show, or the Star Trek films. And it absolutely does not work as a stand alone film.
*I like that Kirk says it wouldn’t be the Enterprise without a Sulu at the helm, when literally the previous movie Sulu is captain of a whole different ship. Which yeah that’s another thing. Sulu raised a family AND became captain. He didn’t have to give up shit! BAD PREMISE.
P.S. Yeah it’s very obvious from the dialogue that Chekov and Scottie were supposed to be Spock and McCoy. Would have been a great character moment if Kirk was reminiscing about Spock and Picard was like, oh yeah, one time I was sent to arrest him. Great friends with his dad, though!
P.P.S. Oh yeah, Shatner and Stewart have no chemistry. No threat to the Spirk shippers here. They’re literally riding horse in the most romantic setting on Earth, with Kirk preparing a homemade breakfast and everything.

Hypothetically,,, if i were to start watching (or reading??) Star Trek, where should i start?
1. YOU MUST BE WILLING TO WATCH CRINGE SHIT BC I PROMISE THERES SOME SEASONS OF SOME TREKS THAT ARE JUST THE FUCKING WORSE BUT ARE SO VITAL TO WATCH SO YOU HAVE THE CONTEXT FOR LATER AND MUCH BETTER EPISODES.
2. OK BUCKLE UP YOU READY FOR AN IN DEPTH DISCUSSION ON WHICH TREKS ARE WHICH
heres a key bc im gonna be using some abbreviations
tos - the orginal series (the one with spock) tng - the next generation (the one with data) ds9 - deep space nine (the one with transgender worms) voy - voyager (the one with janeway, the best captain in the delta quadrant) ent - enterprise (nobody likes this one bc of the post 9/11 nationalism) (also known as the series that had mpreg in the second episode) aos - alternate original series (the one with spock but theyre homophobic) (aka the 2009 remakes) disco - discovery (the one with the mushrooms) picard - picard (picard) lds - lower decks (bobs burgers but its star trek)
OK, SO NOW THAT WE GOT THOSE ESTABLISHED WE GOTTA GET YOU THE VIEWING ORDERS THAT MOST PEOPLE USE
some people watch the show in CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER FROM RELEASE. this is the order from when the shows were made. it goes TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, AOS, DISCO, PICARD, LDS.
the benefits in watching it in chronological order is that you can slowly see the special effects get better over time, you can watch star trek from the "beginning" and have a good grasp on where the writers were going with each characters in each series. its pretty cool, because you can see the rise in popularity. the cons are that you have to start with the most horrible special effects of all fucking time and it gets worse before it gets better.
however, there is ANOTHER order that i like to call the "fun order" because it skips around the timeline a little. you start with TNG, then DS9, then VOY and then you can watch the other treks in whatever order you want. this is fun if you have less time and just want to get the main story out of the way so you can watch Lower Decks.
there's also the "timeline" order, which goes ENT, DISCO, TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, LSD, and then PICARD. AOS is not included in this list because its technically an alternative timeline, so you can just watch those three movies afterwards. the benefits is that you get to see humans starting out their exploration in the galaxy and expand as the show goes on. the cons are that it deffff jumps around in quality (disco is famous for being kinda like a netflix series, or one really drawn out movie while ent and tos are "monster of the week" style episodes). another con is that you have to watch ENT, which has a guy growing nipples on his hand in the 2nd episode because he put his hand in a bowl of rocks with an alien and got man pregnant. trust me this is not the worst episode you will watch.
theres also the "fuck around and find out" order where you read all of the wikipedia summeries of each show and start with the one with the coolest sounding plot
TLDR so the timeline in order of events goes ent, disco, tos, tng, ds9, voy, lsd, picard (as aos is an alternative timeline). the way it was released went tos, tng, ds9, voy, ent, aos, disco, picard, lsd. the way most people watch them go tng, ds9, voy, lsd, tos, ent, disco, picard.
tbh, you could start with any trek and just have fun.
you can also join my star trek server which welcomes people who havent watched anything of trek to get advice as well!

Spread the love - all of them
What's a roleplay blog whose characterization you admire?
I would be silly not to say Jeanette (@ltbroccoli) as I can literally picture Dwight's facial expressions and mannerisms and hear his voice when she writes. She knows Reg very well.
Just started playing with Dean (@assasenach) but he has such a good backstory and universe built around Lorian that he is constantly developing, and it's just really great.
What's a roleplay blog whose writing style you admire?
Chris (@asteritm) just feels like she is having fun when she's writing, and her narrative style is so descriptive. She sets the scene so well, and she's just a pleasure to read.
What's a roleplay blog who always has the best plot ideas?
Cy (@iamselfmade) is probably gonna show up on this list more than once, but this boy knocks plotting right outta the park. He comes at me with plots and headcanons at all hours of the day and I love and appreciate every second of it.
What's a roleplay blog whose artwork/edits/icons you admire?
Hope (@astraldestiny) has always had beautiful graphics. They're simple, beautiful...like her header with Deanna was just my favourite and her muses page is so so pretty. I dunno, I just love her aesthetic.
What's the roleplay blog you've been writing with the longest here?
UH. It's gotta be @ltbroccoli. I can't think of anyone I've been writing with longer on Tumblr! If you wanna get technical about it, @galaeus and I haven't done too much on Tumblr, but we RPed together back in like 2009 on forums hahaha. <3
What's a roleplay blog who's an absolute joy to talk to ooc?
There's many, but I gotta call out Max (@lostmojave) for this one. They're just so sweet and happy and always a pleasure to get a message from!
What's a roleplay blog you love whose character you didn't know until you started writing with them?
Hmm probably Hugh (@iamselfmade). I loved Hugh in the way that I would go 'Hugh!' when I saw him on TNG or Picard, but not the way that I really thought hard about him!
What's a roleplay blog with a friendly mun?
Dawn (@cristobalrios) and I have been speaking more recently, and she's delightful! We totally have to write together, but I like her a lot and we seem to have a lot in common!
What's a roleplay blog whose dedication you admire?
Jen’s (@nashforhire) Liz Nash is basically canon for me. I forget she's not sometimes. She has every single detail of Liz mapped out and obviously loves her and has spent years developing her. Liz's lore goes so deep (okay, Jen, I know, I wrote that and was like 'should I rephrase? no.) and that gives her so much life.
What's a roleplay blog that always keeps you pleasantly surprised?
I don't like the phrasing of this question because to me it sounds like 'which blog do you expect to be shit and you're surprised when it's not?' so shout out to @garakk because I was scared af to play him and people are still trying to write with me, so I guess I didn't fuck him up that badly - pleasant surprise!
What's a roleplay blog you admire from afar?
Uhm like all of them. But if it's someone I haven't written with? Maybe @crimsonsunsets because I've seen their stuff on my dash a lot and it's wonderful and pretty (hi there! nice to meet you).

I’m starting my clinical rotations in a few weeks and I need a show to get me through it…
What’s the best order to watch Star Trek?
Omg my time has come
I gotta say TOS is the place to start. It’s also only 3 seasons, so it’s an easy one to get through. Head empty, only spirk. The tenderness!! The wackiness!! TOS isn’t afraid to be campy, it knows what it is and it loves itself. There are some movies. People have VERY polarized views on those. I honestly feel like you’d vibe with especially the 4th one though. That’s the one where they end up in 1980s San Francisco in order to save some whales. Yes, in canon, not in a time travel fic.
After that, any of the 90s shows will work. Next Gen is next chronologically, and if you skip to Deep Space 9 or Voyager, you’ll run into some Next Gen spoilers by way of cameos and etc, but if you don’t care about that, any of the 3 of them work.
Look honestly Next Gen is the one I did and would watch next, but it’s also the bane of my whole damn existence, so, you know 😅 I promise it gets better after the first season. I promise. The pilot is pretty good, but season one has its problems. They really figure out who the characters actually are in subsequent seasons.
After that you’re starting to hit New Trek territory. I haven’t seen any Discovery myself. Picard is pretty okay (I watched it for the Riker/Troi appearance) but only after Next Gen. Lower Decks has my whole entire heart. It references a LOT of other Treks, so it’s very fun once you have some background, primarily TOS and Next Gen. That said, I got into those two *because* my family started watching Lower Decks and I was intrigued, so it’s also a good gateway drug.
I don’t have a very high opinion of the 2009 movie or its sequels. Like, they’re good for some things, I guess? But they just. Man. Get a lot of the best of Star Trek wrong and amplify the less great parts of it. Thing is they’re easy to watch, being just 3 regular modern movies instead of multiple seasons of older media. So they’re there if you want some Star Trek without the commitment I guess is what it comes down to.

random question: tng
Tumblr media
*takes huge breath and tries not to answer just DATA to most of these*
Ok so - I vaguely remember watching a few eps of TNG when I was teeny and it first aired. I decided to watch it all during the pandemic just to enjoy some nostalgia. I remembered being madly in love with Worf as a kid and thinking Guinan was really cool and wise but I didn't have many other memories. I went into my binge watch expecting to obsess over Klingons and Picard...... And fell in love with Data right in his first scene. I just.....idk... He never struck me as a child but I encountered this series just at the exact right time. I still love Worf a lot but.... Data. 😍
Along that vein, I think I liked Worf as a kid because he was imposing but had a big heart and as an adult, while I still appreciate his character, I did find myself feeling disappointed in him several times, especially his parenting choices lmfao
I don't have a lot of shipping opinions; initially, I really liked Data/Tasha but I think that was just because they smooshed them together so quickly. Now I firmly prefer them as very intimate friends.
While Data is easily, EASILY my favorite favorite - up there in the list of ultimate faves of any fandom - Lore and Picard have extremely warm places in my heart, along with Deanna
Prettiest!? They are legit ALL pretty. This is the sexiest cast (except maybe for DS9?? Idk). Deanna is drop dead gorgeous and so warm and tender. Data is beautiful in all kinds of wonderful and weird ways. Geordie!!!!?????? Excuse???? (Not letting him keep the beard was a CRIME) Beverly, Jean-Luc, everybody
I don't really hate any TNG characters. I think they all have pretty good development. I don't hate Wesley, although sometimes his centric eps annoy me. I adore Q. Even Barclay grew on me!? But I guess if I had to pick a least fave, it would be him.
I do love Data/Geordie, but ultimate OTP is Deanna/Will 🥺👉👈 they are so sweet and strong and supportive and they are so patient with each other and open and their episode in Picard absolutely destroyed me in the best ways 😭❤❤❤
NOTP idk idi I have mixed feelings about Deanna/Worf but I wouldn't call it a NOTP. Maybe just....Data with the hated girlfriend in that one episode. Bad. Bad content.
Predictably, all the Data-centric episodes are my faves - but I think, in addition to him being my favorite character, his episodes are just usually SO GOOD. The Measure of a Man is incredible, Brothers, Data's Day!!!!! It's probably Data's Day. I also really enjoy Hugh and that one where Picard tried to take a vacation and met the sexy, morally bankrupt "archeologist" 👀
Tasha's death was markedly uncalled for - but I gotta stretch this question to include films and say Data's....... :( I was heartbroken, even knowing it was coming. It was so dumb and felt so wasteful. Idk ugh I love that he made a conscious choice to die for the people he loved, and save a lot of others in the process.... Of course that's what he would do..... But I just ugh idk none of the goodbyes were good enough, except maybe Picard's. I do also love that the whole first season of Picard was like a bandaid for it tho 💗
Idk if I could pick a fave season, just because they're all so dense. But I like the content of 3-5 best I think?
S1-2 were....rough.... And I think the last season lost its way a bit
I genuinely love all the characters and all the content the fandom puts out for them, so I don't have anyone I dislike. I don't understand the fascination with O'Brien lmfao but he's loveable
Lore. Ultimate trash lord. Also Q. Also...does Ro Laren count??? I love her.
Data is the definition of cinnamon roll. ❤
Mm..... Please arrest me. I don't hate Data/Bruce Maddox...... I've seen some sexy content I sorta liked but only in a.....deeply disrespectful and self-destructive way..... Please throw me in the brig. Oh, and Deanna and Frank Hollander. Idk what collectively makes us this way.......but me too sis @ all the XXX fanfic writers
I feel "uninvested" in Data/Geordie only because I love them so much as besties, I don't NEED them to be a couple. I still love them as a couple tho. I don't have a lot of feelings about Worf's relationships but that's probably because they toss him into some bad writing a lot :/ I liked his baby momma A LOT and they just.....discarded her.... :(

I’ve done a lot of thinking about Janeway in Prodigy. And while its rather disappointing that the only female Captain (that is only - so far - lead female Captain) is returning to us in an animated format (though admittedly in Nemesis we saw her briefly as an Admiral) while Picard has returned to his own live action series ..... I am rather pleased with this. This is gonna be long so ...
First, let me point out that while yes Riker also appeared in Picard so did Troi. And likely so will others from TNG (not to mention Seven was in the first season). This to me indicates that Star Trek isn’t gonna do one of those Hollywood “female actors can’t return to their past parts” things that we can see happen. In fact, if you watched Lower Decks they are also willing to give us returns in regards to animated as well. Basically: all the new Star Trek we are getting are willing to give us returns in as many ways as possible and I am still going to hold out hope that now she is back for Prodigy we may get a guest spot on Picard.
Okay .... onto the good stuff ....
When they were picking out the cast and story line for Prodigy they could have gone with many things. They could have done a simple Starfleet Academy story. They could have even done a Vulcan Academy or any other of the trillion planetary schools out there for this coming of age style thing they seem to be going for. I mean, its a show designed for kids which begs for that coming of age but for Star Trek. Yet, instead of going for the easy ‘‘everyone would love a starfleet academy” story line they went for it. They grabbed a bunch of teenagers, juvenile delinquents out in space, and tossed them at a ship. These kids can’t just be running around on their own though, no. They need someone. They gotta have that parental figure. That guiding light to help save them, teach them science and engineering, and everything else under the sun. That figure who isn’t going to just drag them back to their actual parents and shame them into staying home - because maybe home wasn’t actually the best place for them. No, they need that figure who will take one look at them and go “Mine Now” AND WHO BETTER TO DO THAT THAN CAPTAIN KATHRYN JANEWAY OF THE USS VOYAGER.
Now, I know there will be a lot of debate on who is the best mom/dad/parent style Captain out there at this point. But for everyone who watched Voyager really think about it. This woman traveled the DQ and was constantly taking people under her wing. Seriously, need I share the image of that moment she saw Kes as someone she could protect? Or the way she just opens her arms to Kes in the hospital wing and Kes runs to her? Or maybe you need to see the way she looked at the Borg baby again? Or perhaps the way she is like “what do you mean i have crew members struggling? I shall personally take them on an away mission!” Or perhaps .... okay look this list could go on and I really dont want to get into the debate on the different ways of viewing J7 (because even I can I who sees it as maternal can see how people don’t and that’s a whole other post okay). Anyways, yes Sisko would have also been another great choice. But then you have to contend with all the prophet stuff again and honestly I think the show made the right choice on this. When Janeway was cast, when Voyager came out, Kate Mulgrew had to put up with SO MUCH CRAP. Like, to the point that even the mere idea of having a relationship on Voyager for Janeway was something Kate Mulgrew pushed back against because at that time she knew, she understood, how it would be taken.
This, right now, is the time for the Janeway character to truly shine. And for Kate Mulgrew to, as she said, embed in the character things she couldn’t do on screen before. Because now she will be in her own room doing voice. Which, in its own way does allow for such things. On top of that, we get to see Janeway in an entirely different arena. This isn’t gonna be Janeway The Starfleet Captain. This is going to be Kathryn Janeway, Captain to CHILDREN.
Like, I’m sorry but I can’t see her being that pulled in by protocols and guidelines anymore if she is not personally walking these kids back to base for STEALING A STARFLEET SHIP. Like, your telling me that Kathryn Janeway somehow comes across these kids who commandeer a Starfleet ship and she, PROTOCOL AND REGULATIONS JANEWAY just runs with it?
Look, not saying she wouldn’t but for her not to there has to be a reason. Janeway isn’t strictly all about protocol and regulations. (she is when its something extremely personal like ‘i may get hurt by this’ - i.e. if I allow myself to get to close to this person i love and let them in i may get hurt so time to pull protocols). This is the same person who broke the temporal prime directive to save her best friend and her entire ship. This is the same woman who violates other rules for her crew. She is willing to break protocol ... but for reasons.
Which tells me one thing ..... one of these teenagers (or all of them) is going to have extreme emotional value to our Kathryn Janeway either at the immediate start or by the end of the first episode. I’ve had a couple thoughts on this and I like the idea of it being Miral or one of Tuvok’s grandchildren. But honestly .... I also love the idea of them all being complete strangers she is completely ready to drag back to Starfleet for a firm lecture but then by the end of the ep she’s adopted them so she’s gonna raise them now.

Choose your Crew - La Sirena edition!
Repost don’t Reblog
Thanks for tagging me, @curator-on-ao3!
1. You dock at a space station, it’s your night off and you need a drink and a good time! You’re taking…
Rios and Seven. We're going to sit in the corner, sip our drinks, barely talk, and it will be amazing.
2. You’ve got some free time in the holosuite, who’s coming with you and what programme are you running?
I was originally going to say "Elnor and whatever program[me] he wants" because can you imagine?! But then I remembered Dixon Hill, and now Picard and I are taking Elnor and can you imagine?!
3. It’s your turn for night shift on the bridge - who’s keeping you company?
Sometimes it's Raffi and we chat; sometimes I activate Emmet and we just look at the stars.
4. You run into some less than friendly Tal Shiar, who are you hoping has your back?
I gotta go with Elnor on this one.
5. Your undercover mission: sneak into a fancy Starfleet event to get some kind of key information. Who’s your partner?
Soji and Seven. They'd class up the joint, think on their feet, and did I mention class up the joint?
6. Medical emergency! A fellow crewman has a plasma burn. Emil is offline. Who are you calling for help?
I wish I could say Agnes, because surely she's had some human anatomy courses, but I feel like that's asking for trouble. Raffi'd be alright, though, I think.
7. All night, you’ve been making eye contact with a promising person across the room. Your wingman is…
Rios. Underneath it all, he's a bit of a romantic.
8. You’ve had a rough day, who do you go to for moral support?
Depends on the kind of day. If I need a good hug, Raffi 100%. If I need someone to confirm I made the best choice out of a sea of bad options, Picard.
9. You’re picking teams for crew 5-a-side football! Apart from Rios (‘cos he’s the other team captain) who do you choose?
Soji and Seven would do their damndest to play well (and succeed); Anges would be terrible but enthusiastic in her attempts to try; and I bet Emmet's been programmed to play against Rios so ...
10. Not a character pick, but if you were part of the La Sirena crew, what would your skill be?
I'd most likely be Picard's backup for diplomatic stuff. Boring but true.

Tv shows I watched this year, my favorite character from each, and why I like each character.
Since my past few posts about Fandom/TV shows have been kinda negative/ criticism, to end off the year, I wanted to make a few posts about things that I like in media. So today we’ll be taking a look at all the shows I watched/finished this year and my favorite characters from each.
Space Force: Captain Angela Ali. Its been a hot minute since I watched Space force, but iirc she’s just… done like 99% of the time with all of her superiors, but in the ten episodes we get, we see some fun little character moments from her. Like in the war games episode where she has to grapple with being an amazing book student, but has a hard time applying some of the stuff she learned at the military academy in a “combat” situation and has to sort of learn and take the lead from one of her “underlings” who is better in that sort of situation. Also, the bonding moments she has with Chan, like when they’re on the road trip, and when she asks him for help learning some science stuff so she can be more useful on missions and stuff. (again, its been a while since I’ve watched this one so my memory of it is a little foggy)
Stargate SG-1: Colonel Jack O’Neill. I like the tope he falls into of the very surface level sort of gruff military man, doesn’t like talking about his feelings, makes smart ass remarks, asks people who talk to much to get to the point, he’s a very fun character, and adds a lot of fun lightheartedness to the show and is generally enjoyable to have on screen. Also tends to get the most character development, at least regarding his past and sort of why the way that he is. (I would say Teal’c gets the second most), also the reason I got into stargate, as my dad showed me a compilation of him being a smart ass and I was like “oh ho ho, I gotta see more of this guy”
Doctor Who (specifically seasons 11 and 12): The Doctor. I like this version of the Doctor, I like that she a little more lighthearted chaotic as opposed to the previous Doctor, who I would describe as dark chaotic, (at least in s11) and just very fun to be around and watch on screen. Also, I think that the rest of the fam is a little bit underdeveloped? Like, we got a lot of fun stuff for Ryan and Graham in the premier with them being a part of a family unit and then at the end of the season we got a nice little scene of them bonding and Ryan calling him grandad and then in s12 there’s like none of that??? And with Yaz we get that she’s kinda got the usual female companion backstory (not a big fan of her job, not happy living with her family, wants *More* out of life) and then we learn that she got bullied as a kid, and at one point she tried to run away, but a kindhearted cop and her sister??? Managed to keep her in Sheffield. So, I feel a little bit like the doctor is my favorite as a default just because we already know the doctors story, so we’ve just pasted a new personality onto a familiar character.
Deep Space Nine (started 2019): Major Kira Nerys. Straight up the reason this character is my favorite is because my dad said I remind him of her and that makes me feel nice. Also, Nana Visitor is very pretty. Also I like that she takes 0 shit from anyone, including Sisko, but we also get to see her learn and grow  from “I will always voice my disagreement no matter what” to “There is a time and a place to object” and also a little bit of learning that sometimes you have to work with people who’ve hurt you and sometimes that sucks. Anyway, she’s a grade A badass and I love her.
Voyager (started 2019): Captain Kathryn Janeway. Like my reasons for Kira, I think Janeway is a badass, and that Kate Mulgrew is very pretty. But also, I think Janeway is a badass in a different way than Kira is, simply because their characters are in very different situations. But I think Janeway is portrayed to be handling things extremely well, and doing what needs be done, obviously that wasn’t super looked at as they did want to keep the tone of voyager relatively light, but anyway, I like Janeway because she’s someone to look up to, to want to incorporate traits of into your own behavior.
Picard: Rafaella “Raffi” Musiker. I like Raffi because she is one of the most consistent characters in Picard. See imo Picard suffers from having too much on its plate, and also it drops/ abandons too many characters. With a show that has only 10 episodes, especially in a first season, you can’t do that. So, with Raffi being in the majority of the episodes, with consistent characterization that makes sense, and working as someone who can actually keep Picard in check? That’s the best character in the show. Also, I think of actors not seen in Star Trek before, she’s one of the better ones and that makes her better.
Lower Decks: Ensign Beckett Mariner. I love a chaotic smartass. Also, for as much as I love LD being a relatively slice of life comedy, I love that Mariner got a ton of characterization in the last few episodes, especially exploring her relationship with her mom, and people who knew her at the academy. She’s super fun, I love how she’s almost always dunking on Boimler, but also really cares for him and doesn’t want to see him hurt. Again, she’s just super fun to see on screen, I love that she doesn’t really like authority figures, and is content to figure herself out while being a relatively low-ranking officer. I like Mariner because she is both sure of herself, but not totally sure what she wants to do with her career, which is something that Star Trek has never explored before, and I think its super interesting.
Discovery: Commander Michael Burnham. I think a trend with a lot of the characters on this list is that I personally find them cool and/or pretty, and once again that also applies to Michael here, but also, I like her because Michael as a concept is fascinating. Like the idea of being a child who goes through a trauma and then is immediately whisked away to a place where she can’t actually process it? And then as a result grows up emotionally constipated and only in her 30s, is sort of finally able to shed that and actually learn how to be healthy with her emotions? Absolutely fascinating, I love that. I also love that we can kind of see that her upbringing and the suppression of emotions as a child still effects the choices that she’s made to this day. Its super cool, and I think one of the best parts of discovery.
Ratched: Nurse Mildred Ratched. I don’t have anything really important to say here, I just tend to like the main characters of tv shows because by default they get the most development/ back story or whatever, and honestly this is one of those shows that I enjoyed enough to watch all ten episodes, and then never picked it up again, so. Ehhh
Dexter: Dexter Morgan. I like Dexter Morgan because he’s a man who has always been told he doesn’t have emotions, but as the show goes on you can totally see that he does have emotions, he just doesn’t know how to handle them, and that they don’t present themselves in the same way that “normal” people’s do. Like, I fully believe that Dexter did actually love Rita, Harry jr., Deb, and Hannah. But I also believe he didn’t fully know how to cope with those emotions, because instead of getting his son help Harry Morgan decided to turn his son into a killing machine, which was a Choice.
Hannibal: Will Graham. I liked watching him kinda fall into Hannibal’s co-dependency trap. Character regression baybee. But like, that’s what happens, I’m pretty sure at one point they both admit that they aren’t healthy for each other, but they also cant live w/o each other. Which is not a dynamic I personally had seen delved into in media before I watched this show. I just think he’s neat.
ATLA: Toph Beifong. I like Toph because I think she provides a nice foil to Aang, whilst also not going too far into the opposite direction. She’s decisive, she knows for the most part what she wants from this adventure, and mostly how to go about getting it, while also discovering a new family along the way. I also just like the way that she can and will throw a boulder at you if she thinks you deserve it.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Sabrina Spellman. Again, sort of falling into the “I tend to like the main character by default folder” It’s also been a hot minute since I watched this show, so I’m just gonna say that I like Sabrina because she is always the one getting her own self into trouble by being Different. And while I’m not saying that it is always good to conform and do what is expected of you, all of the issues in the show are caused by Sabrina (for the most part). Season one is all about shit falling apart if she doesn’t sign the book, season two is her shaking things up at the witch academy and also not wanting to be the princess of hell (understandable, but again, still her fault) and the whole plot of season 3 is the fallout of her imprisoning the devil and then also being too cocky with the guy made of clay. She’s far too cocky, and I think that’s super funny in regards to how it gets her into situations she’s not really prepared for.
The Coroner (BBC): Beth Kennedy. I watched this show with my stepmom, and in this show, Beth tends to be the one who lightens the mood a lot, so she’s my favorite character b/c of that.
