WIP Wednesday: TF&TS (Shopping)
Here is a scene from an early chapter of a longfic I am working on.
Fanfic Summary: Mollymauk Tealeaf survived the encounter with the Iron Shepherds, but a short time later, a spirit had begun hunting him, claiming that he stole his body. This Campaign 2 AU begins with Episode 26 and continues on from there.
This fanfic will be posted on AO3 starting hopefully by Friday 7/28.
Shopping wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t fun either. Just a chore Otis never paid much mind to beyond getting it done. The Tombtakers had usually left Tyffial and Cree to handle that; Tyffial always seemed to know where to find the good stuff, and Cree insisted on making sure that Jurrell didn’t talk Tyffial into buying a bunch of extra crap. Jurrell had always shown up with something anyway, so who knows how much there would have been if Cree hadn’t tagged along.
But shopping could be fun when money didn’t have to be spent doing it, and even better when the owner didn’t intend to give up what Otis was shopping for.
So when the Nein insisted that Otis stay in the Run while Lucien was out cold, obviously that meant that the halfling would stalk the group all the way back to Zadash. Obviously. Lucien would give them an earful otherwise. And since the Nein planned to use the Iron Shepherds’ cart and horses, that meant Otis needed a way to keep up. After getting a solid three hours of sleep and hiking back to the Run, the halfling’s first stop was checking the news on Jagoda Uttolot. That half-orc bastard was somewhere in the Savalirwood on another hunt, so that meant his collection was closed until he got back.
Otis made their way to the west side of town, then snuck into the woods to circle around the Uttolot’s menagerie. It was partially a zoo and partially a holding area for any live beasts Jagoda had caught for the family to sell. There was good money in trading the hides and flesh of Savalirwood monsters, but there was more in keeping certain beasts alive. Of course, that meant the Uttolots had spent an awful lot of money and resources on building pens to keep the monsters locked in until they were ready to be transported. Which was great, because they usually sucked at keeping thieves out.
It did not take Otis too long to sneak past the giant fence enclosing the section of forest the Uttolots had laid claim to. Most of the trees had been cleared and used to construct more fences, and the grid structure was easy to navigate. As expected, there were barely any guards. Sure, there were plenty of valuable beasts that would be worth stealing, but they were usually noisy as fuck, and most people didn’t want to risk getting caught to then risk getting eaten to then risk getting stabbed and then…
Well, yeah. Most people.
Besides, Otis wasn’t after the more expensive ones. Riding something like a hippogryph all the way to Zadash would be awesome, but there was no way they were going to sneak a flying mount out, and the halfling preferred that they be able to return to the Run and show their face eventually. Eventually.
Otis briskly wandered the enclosures, peeking in at what there was to be had. Whatever the halfling picked, it needed to be suited to travel the forest quickly and hardy enough to fend for itself if theygot in a fight. Horses were alright for the first, but shit at the second, which is why Otis was here. Also, horses were boring.
The first potential mount was a panther, though the halfling was disappointed to see it only had four legs and no tentacles. Oh, man, it would have been so cool—so cool—if it had been a displacer beast. Then again, Jagoda probably had to sell any live ones super quick because they were so difficult to contain. And Cree would probably be mad if they showed up on a panther. So nah.
Otis continued on until they found an elk of some kind, though it had an extra set of limbs and bark-like skin instead of fur. Those things were fast! Sure, they looked slow, but they had long fucking legs. And no one with any sense picked a fight with something that big. Zoran was a living example of that. But now that they thought about it, riding an elk as a halfling was going to be a challenge, no matter what barding Otis put together.
One enclosure over was an axe beak. Not as tall as the elk, but it rushed about its enclosure pretty quick. It didn’t make much noise beyond clacking it’s beak. Clack clack. It vaguely reminded Otis of Tyffial—birds were always mean. Otis would prefer not to have to kill their mount for being a jerk.
Next was a boar. It looked tame enough. Fucker was big too; taller than Otis. They vaguely recalled that Lucien and Cree had said they were more dangerous than the bears in these woods, but Otis never ran into any. Really though? It just looked like a larger, hairy pig with curved tusks that looked almost like swords.
The boar stared at the halfling with its black beady eyes. Otis stared back, baring their teeth as they giggled. It did not move, did not twitch, did not falter.
Otis shivered and moved on. Nope. Something was wrong with that thing.
Growling rumbled from the next enclosure. Otis didn’t even have to approach the barrier to see a massive, hulking wolf peeking out at them, sniffing hungrily at the air and licking its chops. Nope, nope, that was an easy no. It was definitely going to try to ea—
“HeHEheheHEH.”
Otis perked up and looked around. The same snicker sounded from the enclosure on the opposite side, so they snuck over.
Inside was a golden, spotted dog with a thick neck, humped shoulders, a fluffy tail, short black legs, and teddy bear ears. It snickered again as it paced side to side, sniffing at the gap in the gate with its tongue hanging out the side of its toothy maw. A hyena. Big brown eyes looked at Otis curiously. “HEheheHEheh.”
Otis gasped. It was perfect.
Within minutes, a giggling halfling and a snickering hyena had made off into the woods long before the next guard patrol wandered by.
“HeheHEHEheheh.”

No one probably cares but Imma post it anyways. Our D&D shenanigans because I'm abusing a Vestige of Divergence's powers for personal gain.
IE, I'm playing pranks for funsies
So quick background: we're playing in Wildemount, we started in Hupperdook with the jailbreak scenario. We picked up a kobold friend who we named Red.
We then went to Zadash via Felderwin (where my character is "from", more on that when I decide to post my PC's background) and found Calianna in the basement of the house of the guy who taught me swordfighting properly, a retired hero of his own regard. (We are playing a dragon-heavy campaign and I LOVE it! The farmhand was coerced into allowing the dragon cult to hold Cali in the basement)
Freed her, got her to Zadash, and we continued on our way to Pride's Call where another party member, William, is from, and he reunited with his family (and the player left the campaign :( ) while we lost Red. So we chased down who we thought kidnapped him and found him in a mountainous academy-ish campus with a bunch of dragons.
Side quest fetch quests ensue, where we go chase down a kid who stole a hammer, but we go to the Ruins of Shattengrad (where we get a bunch of bank notes), then towards Ice Haven, and in Ice Haven, my character gets "kidnapped" during a weird semi-dream fugue state. Turns out its the shipcrew of an old party member of mine from a long time ago, and I get to chat with my fey patron while on deck.
They take me to Balenpost in Eiselcross where the rest of my current party is landing (we had talked about following the thief kid to Eiselcross so I was able to request a drop off), and someone from the Claret Orders tried to recruit me, and I said nah.
We meet up and take off again to Syrinlya, but we get waylaid by a rotund frog man and a water elemental and he kidnaps our captain and we end up finding her, plus a tiefling mage named Honor. And we find a bunch of treasures! Including the Hide of the Feral Guardian, which one of the shipmates pilfered.
We investigated it and found out it was fancy magical, and I try to get it from the NPC. He refuses for a bit, but at some point he started getting weird dreams from it that he didn't like, so he gave it to me in exchange for the mithril armor I had found.
We get to Syrinlya and find the Buyer, who has us go after the other group to try and find the Salsvault, where the cure to the ice sickness is rumored to be found. We very much want to figure this out because our barbarian has the sickness, and we want her cured.
While en route, we find out our warlock was once a bear, amd that was how he crossed from the Dynasty into the Empire unimpeded. We also run across a frozen dragon, but we decide to look at it more closely later on our way back. I keep staring at the armor (because dumbass didn't put it on yet) and we keep going.
We find the vault and, surprisingly, get through it with minimal combat. Including persuading the mastermind behind the disease to tell us where the cure is. We get the cure, then the barbarian, already afflicted, finds the sickness storage vault and destroys it all. We still did not find the group so we start our return to Syrinlya, but partway there we have uninvited guests of some snowy kobolds show up (furry little cuties) and we chase them down because we don't know why they came after us.
We end up finding a weird bunch of kobolds who our barbarian convinces, with almost zero persuasive accumen, that she is a dragon in humanoid form, and she is on a mission to get a hammer from them for some dragons she knows (she did not know that the hammer was for a dragon until that moment). We get to go into the encampment and avoid all confrontations as we retrieve the hammer and leave on our merry way, with a message from these kobolds for the dragon we are going to go and see.
We continue back to Syrinlya, again, and find our frozen dragon. We uncover it from the snow and find it has an egg made of sapphire, and our warlock decides to free it and care for it. We have so many pets, because he has a faerie dragon familiar, the barbarian has a bird *and* an animated gauntlet. Now, dragon egg.
I decide to finally put on the Hide of the Feral Guardian, and gain the ability to polymorph/wildshape into a giant owl. I come to the party and sit on the egg, not realizing our warlock can understand me, so I just keep saying "whooo whooo" like an owl, in my own voice he can understand, and get an apt nickname. We return to Syrinlya, finally, and cure our barbarian. We celebrate with drinks and wait for the captain of our ship to return.
We get on the ship and take off towards Bysaes Tal, because we plan to reroute towards Rexxentrom to cash in our bank notes before going back to Pride's Call. On the ship, I prank the crewmate that had taken the armor originally and startle him much more than I expected to.
And that's where we are, level 6, and ready for what Wildemount has to offer, 100 days into our own journey as we camp on the shores of Bysaes Tal. (As a placemarker, when we went to Felderwin, it was just after the purple wurm attack and the M9 had gone into the tunnel. "Welp, those idiots are dead now." As we arrive to Bysaes Tal, the M9 arrive at Whitedawn Lagoon with Essek and his new wee parasol.)

I hope that the Mighty Nien are going to take the long, slow route across the Empire down to the Menagerie Coast next episode.
One final pass where they check in on all the people who showed them love, on all the people they saved. A trip down to jog Molly’s memories of these moments, and regale him of moments he wasn’t there for.
It’d be nice to see. A brilliant way to wrap everything up in a nice little bow.

This has been the Nein's week, and assuming 141 opens on their arrival at the Blooming Grove on the same day, that week is still going. 28 Brussendar was the first day of the week, and 3 Sydenstar is the last day of the week.
Tumblr media
Assuming that 141 picks up exactly at their arrival of the Blooming Grove, the week of 28 Brussendar to 3 Sydenstar has spanned 18 episodes. Making that same assumption, that 141 will in part be on the same day, 3 Sydenstar will span across 9 episodes.
2 and 3 Sydenstar is essentially a weekend; this is what Essek has been doing with his weekend, since he's only been with them since the end of episode 131.
124 progresses into the morning of 28 Brussendar shortly before the break as the Nein send the threshold crest into the Empire. It continues on through the day as they meet with Essek, and it ends the afternoon of the same day as they teleport to Nicodranas.
125 opens still on 28 Brussendar as they take an ally visitation tour through Nicodranas, Emon, and then Rexxentrum. The episode ends on the same day as they bed down at the Cobalt Soul, visited in the night by various dreams.
126 opens the morning of 29 Brussendar as Beau and Caleb examine each other for more eyes. It progresses through that day as the Nein do some shopping and speak with Astrid, and it ends that night with a date between Beau and Yasha.
127 opens the morning of 30 Brussendar. They go to speak with Astrid in the morning, then go on to the heist at Vergessen. The episode ends in the afternoon, as Caleb, Jester, and Veth are prevented from teleporting by Trent.
128 opens still on 30 Brussendar. The Nein escape to Nicodranas, and the episode continues through the afternoon for a couple of hours. It ends sometime in the late afternoon of the same day as three of the group go into the Folding Halls and the remainder of the group escapes through a Plane Shift.
129 opens still on 30 Brussendar as most of the group collects their bearings and the other three sprint for the exit in the Folding Halls. It ends on the morning of 31 Brussendar as the group returns to Zadash.
130 continues through 31 Brussendar get the families settled, do some shopping in Zadash, then find some respite at the Blooming Grove.
131 opens on 31 Brussendar as Yasha proves herself to Kord. It continues into 1 Sydenstar as the Nein leave for the outpost and end up off-target. They travel through the day, and they arrive at the outpost the morning of 2 Sydenstar. They, and Essek, leave for Aeor.
132 continues on 2 Sydenstar as they arrive at Aeor, confer with the rangers, and fight some undead frost giants at the entrance.
133 opens again on 2 Sydenstar as they fight some frost salamanders, then explore the ruins a little before setting a trap at the entrance. It progresses into 3 Sydenstar as the group desperately tries to get a long rest. It is interrupted by the Takers.
134 opens on 3 Sydenstar as they pursue Lucien and Cree, meet an Aeormaton, and finally get that long rest in the early hours of the morning.
135 opens sometime in the afternoon of 3 Sydenstar from their long rest. They continue on, get Devexian settled, acquire a heresy. They end the episode falling.
136 covers literally an hour of 3 Sydenstar at most as they touch down, discover notes on time travel, run through the knee-high water, and leap into the Astral Sea.
137 covers a couple more hours of 3 Sydenstar as the group explores Cognouza.
138 is another like two hours of 3 Sydenstar as they battle Cree, break time, free Yussa, and watch Lucien claim the aether for himself.
139 is slightly more than an hour of 3 Sydenstar as they have supper, then fight round one with Lucien.
140 is maybe an hour at most of 3 Sydenstar as they defeat Lucien and welcome Molly back among them.
141, assuming that it picks up exactly on their arrival at the Grove, will open on 3 Sydenstar.

Assortment of Mighty Nein scenarios I thought of that just make me happy
Beau and Caleb having favourite spots in Rexxentrum to meet up for lunch, probably more than once a week if they aren't busy. They get to bitch about work and trade secrets, depending on who's around to listen.
Kingsley's first birthday party on the anniversary of his revival. Maybe on board the Nein Heroez, with Fjord and Jester using paint and illusions to set a magnificent scene for their newfound familiar-but-unfamiliar friend who's never celebrated a birthday before. It's pirate themed. That almost gets them into trouble with some other seafaring vessels they weren't expecting to encounter.
The chaotic fairytale feel of the Brenatto alchemy shop, filled with bubbling potions and a sprinkle of Veth's magic, and the dog that keeps appearing out of the blue trying to get pets from customers. The shop is beloved by adults who come to buy goods, and by children who are awed at the alchemical displays. Yussa, via Wensforth, is a regular patron.
Speaking of shops, teacher Caleb teleporting all the way to Zadash to pick up class materials from The Invulnerable Vagrant, perhaps bringing along whichever other members of the Nein are around at the time. Veth and Yeza maintain a connection to the Pumats as well.
Somehow, everyone ends up with a garden. Caduceus may be the top gardener but Yasha and Essek are particularly proud of theirs and not afraid to get in touch with Cad (or ask the nearest wizard to relay a message) when they need some urgent advice. Even Kingsley has a strange fondness for a few potted plants, which slide up and down his quarters in the Mollymauk every time the boat hits rough seas.
Luc and TJ visiting the Blooming Grove with Veth and Beau, exploring it while they're still young and small enough for the cemetery's wild and wonderful plants to feel as big as an entire jungle. Luc tells TJ all the stories his mom told him about battling through mysterious tropical islands, and they play out the adventures in the safety of the Clay family's temple grounds.
Cool scene time! Empire kids getting into trouble and their partners bamfing out the wings in tandem to help- Yasha with her awesome Aasimar feathers and Essek with his sparkly dunamancy-flavoured fly spell. Bonus points for subsequent wizard haste-casting on the lesbians.
Caleb bringing home his research so he and Essek can work on it together. It takes a while because the runes are frequently smudged by rowdy six-week-old kittens.
Every so often on board the Nein Heroez, Jester polymorphs into a seal or killer whale and explores the fantastical weirdness of what lies below the waves. She comes back and sketches all of it- maybe many things that have never even been recorded before. Fjord goes with her- with a healthy dose of water breathing- and if they find something really fascinating they might spend a few hours exploring under the sea.
I really, really want to believe that Jester is the first person in Exandria to discover the 'fat innkeeper worm', also known as the... just google it. Not in public.
The Nein planning meet-ups in the Xhorhaus, but quickly realizing the issue with bringing their favourite hot boi war criminal to the capital city of the Dynasty. Instead, Caleb adjusts the magnificent mansion spell to create a perfect replica for the situation, complete with all the bedrooms rooms, the tree and the hot tub, and illusory Xhorhasian surroundings, and with 100% less complaining neighbours.
By the cruel whims of fate, or perhaps as a form of universal karma, it just so happens that coincidentally, her sense of time in Wildemount disoriented by her constant travelling across the oceans through different time zones, Jester always manages to send her promised messages to Essek while he's having... private time with Caleb. He is conflicted by his own desire to not be entirely frustrated about this.
Fjord and Beau shopping together for wedding rings. Them being the gender-irrelevant Wildemount equivalents of each others' best man, prepping together to make something Jester and Yasha will adore and colluding with their three favourite wizards for Travelercon-style special effects if needed to complete the scene. Concluding with a double wedding where the captain and his first mate, rather than going with parents they effectively or literally don't have, walk each other down the aisle towards their respective partners.

after everything is done, the mighty nein stay with each other.
not all the time, of course—but they have Sending spells, and letters, and at one point Essek gets hold of an extra sending stone, but still. they stay together.
Caduceus visits them all, one by one. makes the long journey down to Nicodranas, and meets Jester and Fjord and Kingsley on the beach. he brings dried fruits from his garden. they picnic in the shade of the Wildmother's lighthouse. he finds work to do wherever he wanders—there are hundreds of people, dozens of towns, in need of a healer, or someone to help with a farm, or someone to listen to them through their grief. the Wildmother occasionally guides him, the winds urging head East, or, find this gnome in this town. usually, though, he lets his feet guide him.
Fjord and Jester make their way up, down, the Menagerie Coast. after so long in the Empire and the Dynasty, they both find they've missed the coast they grew up on. Fjord picks up new crew, sometimes—young people looking for work on the docks, older ones who give obviously-fake names and don't answer questions. he pays them fairly, and teaches them the ropes, and treats them with kindness as someone once treated him with kindness, and lets the salt water and sea-air do their work. Jester finally sees Port Damali, and Feolinn, and Port Zoon, and they are lovely, even if she still thinks Nicodranas is the best. she leaves dicks in temples and on street corners, and once or twice, she sees a green-cloaked figure admiring her work. she sends messages every day, working her way through their family—just updates, about the dragon turtle they just saw, or how Kingsley is trying his hand at painting, or about the new crew members they've picked up.
the two of them find trinkets wherever they go. it starts off as a joke, Fjord saying, oh, we should definitely buy that box of buttons for Veth, I can tell her we found Buttonbeard. but then they keep going—a book of Lucidian folk-tales for Caleb, a strange pepper plant for Caduceus, an ocean-blue set of fighters' gloves for Beau. wherever they go, they find something that reminds them of their family, and they bring it back.
an expositor's work is never done, so Beau ends up back in Rexxentrum or Zadash at least once a year, often more (and maybe she goes back more often than she strictly needs to, but nobody needs to know that). she sees the house Caleb's found, a small place, not on the academy grounds, but close enough. she stays a few nights, and watches Caleb light the stove with a snap of steady fingers, and is introduced to a loud, demanding black cat, who doesn't have Frumpkin's infinite patience for their bullshit.
the seeds Caduceus gave her serve Yasha well. she goes back to the Blooming Grove in the spring, spends time with the Clays. learns more about the earth. gets more seeds. she and Caduceus spend time together, walking the grounds, tending the plants, tilling, and they don't say much.
when Marion goes back to Nicodranas, they all visit. Jester stays for the longest time, bouncing between spending time with her mother and teaching Luc prank ideas catching up with the Brenattos, but eventually, all of the Nein end up there. they take over several rooms of the Chateau, and stay up far too late (and let Luc stay up far too late with them), swapping stories and sharing drinks: Is Vandran re-reading Tusk Love again? You need to introduce him to more literature! and Wait, so when you say you and Essek were stuck in a snowstorm without the tower, that to-tally means you had to cuddle for warmth, right? and Did you actually just... walk to Uthodurn, Caduceus?
they don't let Essek disappear for long. sure, he does eventually drop off the face of Exandria, researching this or that, at one point sneaking back into the Dynasty to see his brother, but he always shows up again. Jester sends him messages. he and Caleb keep up a continuous stream of letters, eventually finding magical means to get them to each other faster. and with Teleportation spells, he's always visiting—a week in Rexxentrum, heavily disguised; almost a month with Caduceus, using his rose-patterned gardening gloves; a brief stint in Nicodranas, helping out at the Brenatto Alchemists. (a few years after Aeor, he spends more time in Rexxentrum. stays a month. then two. then six. then a year. eventually, he and Caleb get a second cat. and he cannot stay forever, but he still stays.)
for the first time in his life, Caleb has time. and so he takes it. slowly, he walks the streets of Rexxentrum, learning to love it again (he's not sure if he ever really stopped loving it). he works, slowly, with Beauregard—it might take their whole lives to dismantle the mess of power and abuse that the Assembly is; it will probably take even longer. but he keeps at it anyway. he goes back and forth between the Academy and the Soul; when Beau combs through questionable documents, Caleb asks questions; when the mages of the Academy and Assembly hold meetings, Caleb goes to them and keeps his eyes on the Martinet.
he starts teaching. he's not sure about it, at first—the Academy hurt, not just him, but so many others. but with Trent gone, he thinks—there can be a change. and he wants to feel the joy of new magic again, to watch new eyes come alight with it, he wants to show people how it can be used to help, and heal, and love, instead of hurt. so he starts teaching. it's joyous, and energising, and exhausting, and he watches his students – his students – all the while, for the slightest hint that they are being hurt, or forced, or coerced, or trained into something they don't want to be. he watches them grow, and learn. he pushes the envelope of treason, just a bit, talks of magic and wonder beyond the empire and its structures. and with every group, he teaches them the spell find familiar.
the Brenattos open up a new apothecary in Nicodranas. it's bigger, and brighter, and busier than the one in Felderwin—they get more herbs and more customers here, and with both Yeza and Veth in the lab, they're soon coming up with new concoctions, experimenting together. when Veth gets the itch in her bones (and she does, numerous times), she tracks down one of the nein, and wanders with them for a bit—visiting Rumblecusp with Beau and Yasha, a trip investigating Halas' halls with Caleb, a few weeks on the Lucidian ocean. she never stays long, and she always comes home. she hasn't broken that promise yet.
Luc grows up on the coast, and learns to swim. sometimes, she joins him.
when they get a house, she and Yeza – by unspoken agreement – find a place with two extra rooms, a sitting room large enough for several people to fit on the floor, and a garden. Yeza's food is almost as good as Caduceus', so it's no surprised that the nein come and visit, often. Yasha helps them grow beds of flowers in the garden. Jester and Fjord bring all manner of strange mementoes from the oceans. when the academy is closed, Caleb stays for months on end, helping her teach the teenagers of Nicodranas basic cantrips and how to pick locks during the day (we are unleashing a menace, he warns her, but he's smiling), and reading to Luc in the evenings.
they gather, together, in her house, too. sometimes for a special occasion (she and Yeza renew their vows in the garden), but often, for no reason at all. just to be together. there is space for all nine of them—she made sure of that. they talk, and laugh, and fall asleep in a chaotic pile in the Brenatto's living room.
in a few days, they will embrace, and separate, and head back to whatever they've been doing. but they will come back together, eventually.
after everything, the mighty nein stay together.

eight months ago, after the campaign 2 finale, i wrote myself a list of prompts for post campaign fic ideas (here). time to check in and see how we're doing from where i thought i'd go
beau and caleb taking baby monks and baby wizards on shared trips to break down the schism between the cobalt soul and the academy
i need to write some baby monks - that's certainly on the to do list
the nein helping astrid revamp the tower she has inherited in the candles (with fireball and hammers). fuck you, trent.
inheritance of the archmage - the rexxentrum fam go to the tower to collect evidence for the soul. they find more than they were anticipating: astrid needs a hug
wizard field trip to pumats to teach baby wizards to be nice to pumat or else
control flames - a view of professor widogast, with surprise guest lecturer expositor lionett, as they work to stop baby wizards being mean to shop keepers (among other things)
the nein taking it in turns to solo the victory pit in zadash for fun
i've got a wip with victory pit nonsense in, maybe one day you'll see it (been working on it since september)
'relaxing family cruise' on the nein heroes
i need to write more stuff on the nein heroez - ngl i have a lot of wips on the heroez but i should finish some of it. the opening of zemnian housewarming has a taste of nein heroez chaos, but i've got more in the works
astrid, beau, and caleb going for treason brunch to talk business whilst wulf and yasha do the farmer's market
the rexxentrum crew are always off screen in my fics - need to fulfill this one ngl. have unto the earth for now. it's missing astrid and wulf but the rest of the permanent rexxentrum crew are there. alternatively, gloria has essek's view on caleb, beau, and astrid in their post canon roles
veth fights a crab, part 2 (brenatto beach picnic)
veth fights a crab part two is the emotional ending to bread and buttons! this is one of my fav fics i've done!!
jester can and will organise a party on this boat. everyone's invited. they've got lots of wizards for transportation and jester wants to waltz
boat party is coming!! promise (this is the september wip again)
caleb finally goes to pick up that book on hoe technique that he has put aside for two silver in trostenwald. the bookseller is waiting, caleb. i don't care if you're a powerful mage, get your hoe technique book, essek might like it
fuck i need to write the fic about the hoe technique book from episode one. the concept is too powerful
the gang go to hupperdook, part 2 (where better to show kingsley fireworks)
this is (once again) in the september wip! it's coming, just very slowly
tea and cakes at the grove with the clays. yasha made biscuits!! reani is visiting with essek and she and clarabelle make copious weed/flower crowns
tea and cakes with the clays can be split into two, here. there's the entire nein doing it in the september wip, but for just essek, try a recipe for spaaldl
family meet up in trostenwald. they show essek all the sights (window we climbed out of, place veth stole from, table jester drew a dick on). the local government is not impressed to see them back
back to trostenwald, huh? i haven't done that. i do have a back to felderwin fic tho - you'll hear when i do
essek and caleb spending a year putting a permanent teleportation circle at each of the locations members of the nein can be found so that they can hop between places easily. unfortunately, the permanent teleportation circles give everyone else easy access to caleb's office whilst he's teaching
well the teleportation circles don't get their own fic, but they pop up in a lot of my post canon series. there's a little map in my head of the nicodranas houses and i can point out their circle on that. the nein heroez circle also shows up in guiding bolt. caleb's academy circles show up in control flames
jester showing kingsley her sketchbook when he's ready to see her catalogue of adventures and sharing her art supplies with him as they sail
jester and kingsley my beloveds. i don't have a fic dedicated to them quite yet, but you can see them interact in remembering how to love each other, guiding bolt, and jester lavorre, godmaker
ngl i've had a great time these last eight months. for the rest of my post canon stuff, check out my when we stop running series - i've done a lot of things i didn't anticipate eight months ago. let me know if you have more prompts or you just want one of my wips finished

We’re Going Home
Set in a future where the Nein and Vilya have defeated Vokodo, we see the people of Vo lifted from Vokodo's influence, and the Mighty Nein must do what they can to help them get home.
.
Imagine, you’re living on an island, in the village of Vo, going about your days cooking, weaving, hunting, planting, mining, giving thanks to your god Vokodo who provides everything for you.
Something clicks inside your head, like a pressure valve releasing, a snap headache rocks you before… a memory comes back. And then another, and another. You… don’t belong on this island, you were never meant to be here. You got shipwrecked, or you were stranded, or you just decided not to leave. Why would you do that?
You had a home, in Tal’Dorei, in Wildemount, in Marquet, but that was… years ago. And now you remember all of it. You remember your name, your real, full name, you remember the family and friends you left behind, you remember the home you had before arriving at this ramshackle village. You notice everyone around you shaking their heads as they have the same revelation, and then you get angry. All of this was stolen from you, by a greedy, arrogant, false god who wouldn’t allow you the dignity of keeping your own memories.
Then, through the sky comes your village leader Viridian, though, that wasn’t her name when she first arrived. It was Vilya. She’s in her wild shape, carrying someone; with her fly two great birds, they carry figures too. They… they must be the new arrivals. They broke the curse. They slew the false god.
They SAVED you.
They land, the village is ecstatic as the story is told, and then comes the doubt and worry. How will everyone get home? The group found ships, but not all on the island know how to sail, and you’re all from different corners of the world.
The group, “The Mighty Nein”, they call themselves, talk to each other through the night, discussing possibilities. The blue tiefling speaks to the air for several minutes, facial expressions switching rapidly between concern, trepidation, happiness. The human man with bright orange hair and a spark in his eye tells the village the plan: for those who cannot or do not want to travel by sea, he can teleport you over the course of a few days to different locations.
The number of you who are content with this give your permission; you will be leaving this godsforsaken island if it’s the last thing these heroes can do for you.
“It seems they’ve done it again. You’re not the first person the Mighty Nein have saved from the brink, and you certainly won’t be the last.”
.
Imagine, you’re Vilya. Youve spent a quarter of a century on this island, happily serving as Vokodo's intermediary and leading the village with your equals, Terra and Lukash. The people love you, but the love somehow can't fill your heart completely, until you awaken and the hole fills with memory of your true family. You gladly hug each member of the Mighty Nein, the small halfling woman swearing you into their party with a solemn ‘Welcome to The Mighty Nein’ and letting you know that you will always be received with open arms if you choose to return. Ever in their debt, you walk into the teleportation circle before you. You’re transported to the Tidepeak Tower in Nicodranis, a city you’re unfamiliar with in all but name, and there waiting for you are two mages, an elf in gold and a lady in blue. The elf makes a noise of quiet surprise and wonder, stating,
The lady takes you by the hand, telling you she will take you back to Tal’Dorei to reunite with your family again. You walk through her teleportation circle, you are finally led to your husband, older but still as handsome as you remember. You meet with your daughter who is all grown up and powerful, with stories and adventures of her own to share. You see all the people you’ve known and loved, and you’re introduced to ones you haven’t met before; your life is instantly enriched with their presence. You live to remember the breakers of your curse and the journey you took with them to free the village that was once a home.
.
Imagine, you’re a human sailor. You spent your time on Vo longing to be back on the ocean, trading, fighting, fishing. The wizard draws a teleportation circle to Port Damali while the monk who stares you down with mirth in her eyes hands you a signed letter and she tells you to make a good impression. You’re led to the circle by the tall barbarian and when you hesitate, she pushes you gently into the circle. You tumble out and into a room, guards quickly opening the door in shock and you shove the letter into their hands; one takes it away. You sit on the floor, tears coming to your eyes as you realise you’re finally home. The leader of the Cobalt Soul archive comes to meet you, letter in hand,
“Another friend of Expositor Beauregard? You lot always like to make your entrances, don’t you?”
You smile, now understanding why the monk looked amused at you as you left. You’re led out to the port, weak at the knees at the sights and sounds and smells of the harbour, and spend your time finding the comrades you left behind. You remember those words the Cobalt Soul archivist said to you, that you’re a friend to the Mighty Nein; you live to hope you will do them proud and some day repay them for their aid.
.
Imagine, you’re an elven merchant. You’re from Zadash, and you were on the way home from a prosperous trip to Marquet, when you stopped by this cursed island to refuel and never left. The large, kind-eyed firbolg of the group takes you aside to get to know your story and asks the tiefling to send a message to a shop owner you once knew in your city. You get confirmation that a friend will be awaiting your arrival. You take a deep breath and step through the teleportation circle, walking into the halls of the Cobalt Soul in Zadash. A face pokes their head around the door, fluffy, bespectacled, with beautiful robes. Someone you’ve sat down to tea and trade with for many years, and not for many years have you been happier to see him again. Pumat Sol takes you by the arm into a hug, chuckling and telling you,
“Respectfully, my friend, if it weren’t for the Mighty Nein, I don’t believe either of us would be here today.”
You gratefully follow your friend back through the streets of Zadash, planning your re-entry into the commerce of the city, though now you place less value in material wealth. You live to trade tales of your adventures and find, unsurprisingly, the Nein are folk heroes to the city also; many citizens attest to the bravery of the party who saved you.
.
Imagine, you’re a smith. You’re from a great line of dwarven blacksmiths and creators. You left your home to search for rare materials to make your creations and name well known across the seas. You spend your time on the island smithing tools, simple hammers and spears, tools of function. Your memories clear of the great forges of Uthodurn, and you realise you were foolish to try to make yourself famous, all you needed was a place to work, your family beside you, and the gifts the All-Hammer gave you. The tiefling and half-orc speak to each other before she send a message away to the wind. The half-orc calms your travel nerves by showing you his blade, the incredible craftsmanship is mesmerising, and familiar, your fears are forgotten. You are led to the circle and roll out into a chamber of the Steeple Archive in Uthodurn, you’ve never been inside before and it is a grand place. You’re quickly escorted outside to a city that has changed just enough to make you worried again, when a stocky figure claps you on the shoulder. You spin into the embrace of Umagorn Smeltborne and he all but picks you up, exclaiming,
“My friend! Finally you have returned, we have much work to catch up on.”
You try to explain how you are here and what has occurred but he holds up his hand to stop you.
“By the grace of the Wildmother who watches over the Nein, the All-Hammer has seen it fit to return you to us.”
You congratulate your friend on his masterpiece of a sword, and vow you will never take your home for granted again. You live to create and learn and grow in prowess, you pay your tributes to the All-Hammer, and you make ones especially for your new friends, should they ever pass through Uthodurn again.
.
Imagine, you’re a dignitary. An orc with a good ear and strong voice for negotiations. You were sent by your queen, many, many moons ago, across the seas on a mission to secure new allies. You cast your mind back to Rosohna, the sweet richness of the dark city, and the queen you have been honoured to serve in your lifetimes. You wonder who is still in her council, whether you will be trusted when you return after all this time. The blue one and the wizard come to speak to you of someone you once knew, the Dusk Captain. The tiefling carefully words her message, asking permission for you to teleport, while the wizard tries to update you on the situation from your homeland. When the circle is ready, you steel yourself and march through, blessedly arriving in the Lucid Bastion. You take a knee, thanking the Luxon for bringing you home, finally. As you rise, you are greeted by the Captain, smiling to see a long-feared-dead member of the council back and well. As she walks with you through the halls, she recounts the changes in the Kryn Dynasty, culminating with the wizard and his friends who held up their missing beacon in front of the queen, and gave them new hope.
“We feared you dead, with no way to come back through the Luxon. The Mighty Nein have assured you your soul in this life and the next.”
You frown, realising the wizard and the group conveniently forgot to mention they were also heroes of the Dynasty. You are confident they shall return to Rosohna, and add your voice to those who reverently bless their coming to the Dynasty. You live to return to your position and help write the new history of the Dynasty, about the aid of the group who gave back your voice.
 .
Connected by land and by sea, The Mighty Nein continue to shape the lives of the people of Exandria. The Nein will bend the knee for kings and queens and nobles, they bow their heads under the gaze of gods and false gods alike, they take their orders to do what they can to better the lives of others.
But at the end of the day, a druid in a far off land, a sailor in Port Damali, a merchant, a smith, a dignitary, a farmer, a smuggler, a Crownsguard, a carnival master, an inventor, a half-dragonborn, a mage, a kenku, a stone giant, a family of clay and dust and stone…
They look to the stars and count their blessings of the people who have irrevocably touched their lives.

Summer at Brenatto's Camp for Young Adventurers
Veth sat proudly at the staff table watching her campers eat breakfast. Camp Brenatto was a raring success if she could say so herself. The camp offered the young folk of Nicodranas a place to learn about the wider world. Some kids even traveled from as a far as Zadash to attend the camp.
With funding from her adventures, the rest of the Mighty Nein, and donations from some famous author, Terry Daring or something like that, the camp had beautiful grounds. It was the perfect place to learn about adventuring. The camp had a high ropes course, an archery range, a mock dungeon and as much as Veth hated it, a small water front where the kids could learn to swim.
The camp was Veth’s second greatest pride and joy, after Luc. The curriculum covered every aspect of adventuring life she could think of. Camping, foraging, first aid, lock picking, archery, trap finding. The dungeon was an obstacle course filled with, carefully non lethal, traps for the kids to practice disarming.
While each week was filled with learning and excitement, this week was a special one. This week the Mighty Nein were coming to visit. Certainly the various members of the Nein would show up when they had the time to help out through out the summer program, but this week the entire party was there because this week is spent discussing Party Makeup.
The kids at the summer camp would spend the week talking with the Nein, learning about and trying out different roles within their own smaller parties. The best part though, every year had the campers the most excited, was the Mighty Nein getting a rare chance to show off. To put their skills and battle earned prowess on display.
After breakfast concluded Veth lead the campers out to the practice field. She left them in the capable hands of the one of the counselors before casting invisibility on herself and slipping to the side.
The practice field was a large open area, filled with bits of rubble and the facades of buildings. It was the perfect place for a demonstration. Even as the kids were still settling half a dozen gnolls appeared around the battle before running to cover. Then to the surprise of the kids a young blue dragon appeared out of the air, crashing to the ground and roaring.
“Remember! Team dynamics are very important!” Veth called, still invisible. “You have your tanks!”
Yasha flew in on her angelic wings, great sword in hand. She landed in front of the illusory dragon slashing at it twice, before roaring, a primal scream. The dragon struck back at her, causing gasps and screams from the campers, though she pantomimed shrugging off the blow.
“You have your support casters, also great for an area of affect spell!”
Caleb ran in, throwing a handful of iron into the air and Yasha doubled in size, now able to look the dragon almost squarely in the eye. Then he slapped his hands together, a bead of light flew out from his hands detonating above the heads of a few of illusory gnolls, causing their illusion to shatter and fade. He then ducked behind some cover. Essek, under an illusion as well cast fly on himself then rose into the air casting magic missile as he did so.
“Can’t forget your mobile heavy hitters!”
Kingsley ran in on one side of field slashing through one of the gnolls before running up to another. Fjord appeared on the other, taking a slash with the Star Razer at a different before slamming his blade into the ground and thunder stepping to the other side of the field, also now face to face with a gnoll.
“And the healers! Capable of healing when they want to and dealing heavy damage as well.”
Jester dimension doored into the middle of the field with Caduceus on her arm. Her spectral lollipop bamfed into the air and struck the dragon, while Caduceus healed Yasha then cast spirit guardians. Drawing more gasps from the watching kids as they were suddenly surrounded by spectral beetles. There were now only a few gnolls left and the dragon itself.
“No party would be compete without your flankers!”
Beau sprinted in, then pummeled the remaining gnolls, shattering their illusions. Then she did a standing backflip onto a wall that she scaled with ease until she stood at the top glaring at the dragon. At the same time Veth ran in, dropping her invisibility in favour of charging Brenatto’s Voltaic Bolt. She ran forward and fired the bolt into the dragon’s open mouth causing a surge of electricity to pass through the illusion. Then, a beat passed, and the dragon burst into rainbow sparkles.
The Mighty Nein gathered again in front of the kids. Beau flipped off the top of the building, landing with a perfect three point landing and walking up to give Yasha a kiss on the cheek. Fjord used misty step to appear right at Jester’s side as she walked to the group. Veth stepped to the front, again addressing the awestruck kids.
“No adventurer is complete on their own. Everyone has weaknesses and at some point will need a friend to help pick them back up. Remember that when you eventually join your own party. What role do you want to fill? What backup do you need? Now we will break you up into groups and you can ask the Mighty Nein any questions you might have.”
Veth watched for a moment as the campers spread out in smaller groups. Each small group approached one of the Nein. Some running up to Beau, excited after her display. One kid tried to do a similar flip and would have faceplanted had Yasha not grabbed him by the collar of his shirt, saving him the embarrassment and his front teeth.
A few of the more studious came up to Caleb and Essek, quietly mumbling out questions to the wizards. One she guessed recognized Caleb, and she realized probably knew of him from the Soltryce Academy.
Several kids found Fjord or Kingsley. Veth noted with pride that among the kids with those two were a pair of half-orcs, a tiefling as well, and few other more often prejudiced against races. She was sure this was the first time they had seen anyone who looked like them in an adventuring party.
Luc lead the charge of kids up to the two clerics. He was now one of the oldest still attending the camp, not long from heading out on his own adventures. He hugged Caduceus around the middle and started talking rapidly to him. Likely about the dreams he still had from when Caduceus brought him back from the dead. As much as she wanted him to be an arcane rogue like herself, she felt that he was well on the road to becoming a cleric, though which deity wasn’t clear yet.
There were a group of campers coming up to ask her questions as well. Veth smiled, then gesturing for them to wait, stepped back to address the whole camp again.
“The most important part of a party, is not the tactical benefits. The most important part is that these people who you will stand shoulder to shoulder with, will one day become your family.” She smiled at the rest of the Mighty Nein, making eye contact with each of them, as they smiled back at her. “I love these people as much as I have loved anyone. I’ve saved the world by their side, and I would do it again any day of the week.”

How about a scenario with each of the M9 where the child calls them Mom or Dad.
Yes… just yes 😊
You call them Mom/Dad
Child of the Nein (Mighty Nein & Child!Reader)
Jester
You and Jester were shopping and causing some mischief around Zadash, nothing crazy of course. Something caught the corner of your eye, a doll dressed up like a warrior was sitting proud in the window display of a toy shop making your eyes sparkle with excitment. You run over to Jester and tug at her dress while bouncing in you feet.
"Mommy! Mommy look! Can I get that doll please?" You say without a second thought, pointing towards the shop. Jester looks at you astonished for a moment, this was the first time you’d called her mom. You give her a confused look when she doesn’t respond right away and watch her press her hands together as if she were about to pray and a large smile stretch across her face.
"You think of me as your momma?" Despite the smile Jester sounded like she was about to cry. You tilt your head to the side confused, had you said something wrong?
"I’m sorry, should I not-"
"No no, don’t be sorry." Jester quickly cuts you off. "I’ll happily be you momma!" She picks you up and places a few kisses on your cheek and forehead before placing you back down and taking your hands in hers. "Now let’s go get you that doll." With that you both practically skip over to the toy store. You were really glad you got to meet Jester, she was everything you wanted in a mom, especially compared to your old caretaker, whatever happened to them? You didn’t know and you didn’t care anymore because now you had someone who actually loved and cared about you.
Nott
You’d accidentally called mom once before but Nott had easily accepted the roll, having already seen you as her own child. Afterwards it came a little easier to refer to her as such but only when you’re in towns or cities on a small break between adventures. It was kinda funny in a way how it was easy to call her mom in such domestic places but once you were on the road again you'd go back to calling her by name. Nott didn’t mind of course, adventures were intense with little time to think about names and/or titles so it wasn’t much of a surprise that you would do this.
Caleb
Caleb has always tried to distance himself from others, scared to let people into the shell that is his life and yet you had still managed to find a way in. At first he’d brush it all off finding an excuse for why you were just tagging along with him, but over the years he began to warm up to you, seeing as you were his only loyal company besides Frumpkin before you’d met the rest of the Nein.
"Hey, Caleb?" Your little voice pulls him away from his daydreaming. "I want to show you something, I’ve been practicing really hard." He shifts a bit so his full attention is on you. You take a deep breath and pull a cocoon from your bag, Caleb’s taught you a lot now it was time to put it to the test. There’s a slight glow and flash Caleb watches as you body shifts and turns into the form of a cat, your cat form pads over to him and hops up for a closer look. With a quick gesture of his hands the spell wears off and you quickly change back to yourself, you stare up at him with a large smile as he gives you a proud look.
"If that was your first time successfully casting Polymorph you did wonderfully, I’m proud of you." He kneels down and places a hand on your shoulder, a small smile placed on his features.
"Thanks!" You beam at him, giggling a little. "But that’s because I’ve got you as my teacher papa." The word sorta slipped out without your knowledge, effectively shocking him. You happily skip off to tell everyone what you just accomplished, leaving Caleb still kneeling down in deep thought.
You’d called him papa, you saw him as a father figure, someone to look up to and depend on. You looked at him the opposite of how he saw himself, and had done so without a second thought or regret. "I don’t deserve this." He mutters to himself as he watches you skip over to Jester and Nott to tell them of your accomplishments.
Caduceus
You let out a huff, confused and conflicted on what your thoughts were doing, was this supposed to be a good thing or a bad one. Caduceus walks into the little inn room seeing you huff around a little.
"You alright? You’ve been huffing around a lot." He stares at you concerned. You look up at him and he could now see the slight gloss that glazed over your eyes, he kneels down and you instinctively walk into his waiting arms. "Would you like to talk about it?" He asks calmly, you nod after a moment.
"It’s been so long since the last time I saw my family and…" You hold back a small sob, "and I can’t remember what they look like anymore. Is that bad? I’m I a bad kid for forgetting my own family?" A few tears spill over but Caduceus catches them.
"Tell me, do you still know their names?" You nod your head. "Can you still remember the lessons they taught you, or maybe the games they played with you?" Again you nod. "Then you haven’t forgotten them, so long as you still have memories with them you haven’t forgotten them. You’re not a bad kid, far from it."
"Thank you papa." You pause, having caught your own words and look up at Caduceus. He looks surprised at first, but that quickly turns to a gentle smile and he places a soft kiss to the top of your head. You didn’t think much on it before but you had to admit every time you tried to picture your father in your head all you could see was Caduceus, and honestly that wasn’t so bad.
Fjord
Being back in Port Damali always left a nice yet uncomfortable feeling to you, it was where you were raised with the beautiful open sea but the conditions you were raised in weren’t exactly ideal. Which is why you were always greatful when Fjord had agreed to take you with him all that time ago. You find yourself walking along the beach, old habits die hard I guess, not that you minded. You hear someone come walking up from behind and look over at Fjord as he approches.
"Brings back memories doesn’t it." He says, taking a seat on the sand, you join him.
"Yeah, it felt like so long ago… time's weird when adventuring." This earns you a chuckle.
"It sure can be. You know we could recreate that scenario, I could pretend to be unconscious and you aggressively poke me with a stick." He jokes, now getting a chuckle out of you.
"That’s stupid," you playfully push his shoulder. "Don’t be ridiculous dad." You quickly place a hand over your mouth once you’d caught what you just said. Slowly you turn to look at Fjord who’s staring right back, a look of astonishment on his face.
"Did you just call me dad?" You didn’t notice the smile that started to form on his face.
"I’m sorry, I just sorta slipped out, I didn’t mean t-"
"You see me as your father?" He cuts you off a bit, his voice filled with joy. You turn to face him again, seeing him giving you such a caring and joyful smile.
"Well, yeah… I-I guess. You were the first person who treated me so nicely and you took me along with you, it just… felt right to say." You admit a little sheepishly.
"Then by all means, don’t let me stop you." Fjord then pulls you closer to him and stands up with you in his arms, as he places a gentle kiss to you temple. You were glad you had decided to take that beach walk all that time ago, meeting Fjord was by far the best thing to ever happen to you. As for Fjord he was happy to give you something he never had as a child, a father to look up to and depend on.
Beau
Another day another training session, kicks and punches being thrown every which way, thankfully you had the stamina to keep up with Beau. It could be a little tiring but it was necessary to keep your reflexes sharp, then you get punched in the jaw, not too hard that it'd break but enough to leave a bruise later.
"Don’t go drifting off into Lala land. Keep your eyes on the enemy or else that’s going to happen again." You give her a thumbs up and make sure you dodge the next attack she throws at you. When your training is finally over you take a seat and rub at your jaw a bit, feeling where the bruise was forming. "Here, this’ll help." Beau sits down next to you and hands you a healing potion and a cup of water.
"Thanks mom." You say nonchalantly.
"What did you just call me?" Beau asks in surprise. It takes you a second to actually register what you just said, you go stiff when realization sets in.
"Ummm, n-nothing I just said thanks." You look away to try and hide your embarrassment.
"I’m falling for that (y/n). Do you seriously see me as a mother or something?" Beau asks, genuinely curious to your responce. You let out a sigh.
"Yeah, kinda." You finally admit. "It’s just that even though I know you don’t care much for stuff like this, you treat me better then my real parents ever have… guess I just started projecting a little." You scratch at the back of your head and look away from her a little, feeling embarrassed to finally admit to all this. Beau places an arm around your shoulder and pulls you in closer to her side.
"I’ve never claimed to be good at this, but that doesn’t mean I don’t care. I like you kid, you got a good spirit to you. So if you want to see me as a sort of mother figure then sure I’ll take it, and if your parents somehow found out and don’t like it that’s just too bad for them." She puts on a goofy smile and ruffles at your hair, making you relax and laugh a little at her antics.
Yasha
One of the few things you liked when it was just you and Yasha traveling alone was the number of flower fields you managed to come across, Yasha’s love and collection of flowers had passed over to you. You spend hours looking through the wildflowers until you found a good handful of them that you and Yasha would then braid into each other’s hair (if your hair is long enough), or sometimes you’d just roll around in the grass. It wasn’t much but these little moments were nice temporary distractions from the troubles that weighed you both down. After putting in the last flower to Yasha’s braid she stands and looks at you.
"How do I look?"
"You look like and angel mama." She body stiffens and her breath hitches a little at your words.
"You-you called me mama." Hearing her say it out loud made you realize your mistake.
"I’m sorry, it just slipped out." You apologize, now feeling bad for the slip of your tounge.
"No, i-it’s ok. Just surprising." She kneels down and gently pulls you in for a hug which you return. "You know…" Yasha starts but let’s her words drift a bit before continuing. "Zuala and I had always wanted a child."
"You have?" You look up at her with big, curious eyes at the mention of her deceased wife.
"Yeah… and I always thought if we did, they would be a lot like you." You smile and cuddle into her more as she tightens her grip on you a bit, as if the second she lets go you’d disappear from her. You stayed like that in the field for who knows how long, just savouring each others presents.
Molly
Taverns, where you can get all the latest gossip, at least decent meals and loads of entertainment from drunken idiots thinking they're some big hotshot, and music one can never forget the music. Taverns were also a place where sketchy individuals would prey on poor unsuspecting souls, which is why you were always super careful and alert to the people you would interact with. Some said sketchy individuals had just asked you "innocently" to join them and see something cool in the alleyway, you had to hold back a laugh at these armatures, did they really think you for an idiot just because you were young? Well that wasn’t going to stop you from having a little fun of your own.
"Before we go, I should really ask if it’s ok." You say faking your own innocence, except yours was much more convincing as you make your way over to the bar where Molly was flirting with one of the locals. You tug on his coat to get his attention, he gives you a quick side glance. "Hey papa," now you had his full attention as he whips around to look at you with a shocked expression. "Those men over there say they want to show me something cool in the alleyway, can I go?" You ask still playing your little game as you point to the now nervous men. It still took Molly a second to register your words but once it clicked into his head what was happening he gives you a sly smile.
"No no, you stay here while your papa has a chat with them." He say loud enough for the men to hear, he stands and the men dash out of the tavern. "Armatures." He mutters, sitting down again.
"Aww, are they really your child? They’re such a cutie." The woman Molly had been talking to coos at you. You give her a smile.
"Well it was-"
"Yes they are." Molly cuts you off, picking you up and placing you on his lap. You look at him a little confused and he pokes your nose, then he goes off making up a story of how he found you and took you into his care. You playfully roll your eyes at his tall tale that the woman and now a few others were eating up unaware of all the contradictions in the story. Behind all the exaggerations and using you as a chick magnet there was genuine affection Molly had towards you, a part of him liking the thought of you being his kid, even if it wasn’t by blood.

Lovely Caleb fic! Could I get a confession of love fix that involved Caleb kissing the hands of a bewildered reader?
Thank you for the request! I hope this is to your liking!
It’s rather late. Well, you think it is. It’s kind of difficult to tell in Rosohna’s eternal darkness. At least you were sure it’s been a long day. You find yourself wandering the halls of the Xhorhaus. The last few months have been crazy, hectic and you’d have to admit your life has been turned upside down but you wouldn’t change if for the world. You found friends, family even. Reminiscing you find your mind gravitate towards fond memories of your favourite wizard. Dragging him along on a little shopping spree for spell components, the excited rants he goes on when you ask for his advise on this new spell you found, the talks about nothing when you shared a watch, holding his hand while Yasha shaved his beard with her sword, giggling about a little prank you played on a very grumpy looking halfling shopkeeper in Zadash, drunken nights sharing a bottle after a successful job completed, him falling asleep with his head on your shoulder, caring for each other’s injuries, the rare dance in the tavern…
Not as insightful as Caduceus may be but you weren’t blind either. It’s clear Caleb seems more comfortable around you than anyone save for Nott maybe, a different kind of comfort still. You’ve been consciously picking up on a shift in his behaviour for a while now. Your favorite wizard has been getting closer and more affectionate towards you but you’ve known him for a while now and you can’t help but pick up on this. His recent shift in behavior gave you butterflies in your stomach, something more than friendship but you didn’t feel it was the right time to tell him how you feel. Besides, what his feelings don’t extend beyond care right? This is no different than his relationship with Beau or Nott. Love is a strong term and one you may not hand out so freely but you know yourself well enough these feelings you’re experiencing are love. You just don’t want to ruin your friendship because he’s not ready, not comfortable or doesn’t reciprocate your feelings in the same way after all. Caleb has come out of his shell and made so much progress, growing more comfortable and open around you and that’s extending to those around him too. You don’t want him to crawl back into that shell again. You value him more than that.
Quietly you get some dried herbs from a sleeping Caduceus’ stash and wander into the kitchen to make some tea. You’re pretty sure you’re the only one still awake as everyone was quite exhausted after your return. Trying to start a flame to boil the water proved more difficult than you had hoped. Growing frustrated with the flint and steel you slam them on the counter a little too hard. You cringe squeezing your eyes tight shut and listen. Okay… seems like no one woke up from that. You glare at the kettle half the mind to toss it out of the window. Stupid tea. Stupid fire. You take a breather leaning your head against one of the shelves above the counter.
“It looks like we had the same idea.” You almost jump out of your skin quickly covering your mouth to prevent a scream to escape from your lips. You see a bleary eyed Caleb looking about as disheveled as expected standing in the doorway of the kitchen.
“Don’t scare me like that you idiot!” You toss a towel at him. It hits, draping over one shoulder and he just gives you a ‘really?’ expression as you feel the blood rush from the scare fade.
“You’re having trouble, ja?” He says more than asks referring to the still cold kettle.
“You have to make me feel worse about not being able to get a flame going to brew some tea?” You say in jest as you grab another cup for him. Caleb walks over taking your spot and with a snap of the fingers the flame is lit.
“It is not that difficult.” He jokes back fully aware that your expertise lays not with fire magic. You have many other talents, he’s told you so himself many times praising you for them. You grab the towel draped over his shoulder, fold it neatly and put it back on the counter.
“Your help is appreciated oh grand master magician.” You give him a side hug which he returns wrapping his arm around your shoulders as you wait for the water to boil.
“Couldn’t sleep?” You ask watching drops of condensation build up on the outside of the kettle.
“Ah, no. Uh, wandering thoughts.” Caleb sounds like he’s only half paying attention. Wandering thoughts indeed.
“Wanna talk about it?” You offer as the kettle starts whistling and you remove it from the heat before it gets too loud and begin preparing the teapot. You take a step closer to the counter, Caleb’s hand falling from your shoulder to your lower back.
“I… uh-“ He hesitates and you swear when you look over your shoulder for just a second you can see a slight blush creep up his cheeks.
“Caleb, you know you can tell me anything, right?” He manages to get out a ‘yes’ under his breath so you grab a tray, put the teacups and saucers, the teapot and grab some biscuits from a jar hidden behind the vast array of herbs and spices to avoid a certain Tiefling from claiming them all. Balancing the tray on one hand you turn around and grab his hand, guiding him along into the living room. You put the tray on the table and make Caleb sit down on the couch as you sit down next to him. You can see him take a deep breath and he refuses to meet your eye. Though, that’s not entirely out of character for the wizard so you give him time and space as you pour the tea in each of your cups. With a wave of your hand you cool the hot water to a less scalding but still warm level.
“I know. But in this case I don’t know if that makes this any easier.” You frown and grab his hands in yours. Almost absentmindedly he begins drawing circles on the back of your palms with this thumbs. While he won’t look at you you can see he’s trying to find the words.
“Should I be worried?” Many questions rush through your head. Was everything alright? Did something happen?
“No. No. No need to worry.” He musters a quick half smile before it disappears. You hated seeing him like this. So much conflict and inner turmoil. You give his hands a soft squeeze. Whatever this is it must bother him a lot if he’s so affected by it!
“It’s alright. Take however long you need. I’m here for you no matter what.” He takes a deep breath as you finish your sentence.
“I’ve had some revelations lately and I’ve tried so hard to push them away, deny them or hoping that maybe I was interpreting them wrong but I can no longer just brush them aside. I don’t think it’s fair…” Another deep breath.
“What’s not fair to who?”
“This. All of it. What I’m doing. It’s not fair to you.” He has trouble forming a sentence.
“Slowly. Just keep breathing.” You try to calm him down.
“It’s not fair that I freely take your comfort, affection, kindness and even companionship. I’m afraid my actions in return, they do not come from friendship but selfish motives instead. I don’t want this to end but I cannot treat my own actions as rooted from friendship when they are not.” He scrambles on stumbling every few words and you try to make sense of his words but you’ve known him longer than today so you get where he’s going.
“Caleb…” You begin but he cuts you off.
“No, no I need you to hear this before I cower back and lose the courage to do this. You are heaven sent. You are patient and kind and every time you smile at me I feel my heart skip a beat. Every hug, touch or kiss feels like the warmth of the sun after endless winter. I thought perhaps I felt this way because this is who you are and what you do; making the lives of those you care about brighter where you can. I know you care about me as you’ve reminded me many a time, and I care about you a lot, but I do not think it ends with just care. My realisation showed me that you’ve brought about a feeling I thought myself no longer capable off; love.” He pulls your hands close to his chest. You’re bewilder, confused at this open confession but above all surprised he so openly confides in you. You think hard taking in every word.
“So I think it’s unfair to you when for me this kindness and affection from my side will always be out of love and I cannot in good conscious give you my love when you do not want it. I cannot ask you to feel the same but I also don’t think me returning your kindness and affection can ever be anything other than love. So please, I don’t want what we have, our friendship to end but I don’t want to take what you don’t have to give me…”
“Caleb, I need you to listen to me very carefully.” You watch as his shoulders slump. So insecure when it comes to other’s feelings and opinions of him it hurts you every time he sells himself short. You look for the right words yourself. If he can muster up the courage then so can you!
“You can be so blinded by your own thoughts and insecurities you don’t even consider the fact that I feel the same.” He finally looks at you wide eyed freezing in place for a second.
“You underestimate your ability to be loved and if I can prove you different, if you will let me prove you different I will.” Caleb scans your face for any sense of insincerity, deceit or even jest but he finds none. He takes a minute but eventually pulls your hands to his lips pressing a long soft kiss to the backs.
“Thank you. I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve this but you truly are a light in the darkness.” He kisses the backs of your hands again.
“You were you; all you ever need to be.” You shift leaning into his side, head against his shoulder and his arm wrapping around you. Intertwining your fingers with his at your waist you grasp his other hand and bring it to your lips. That small kiss right where his wrist meets his palm makes him melt. He leans back on the couch pulling you with in a slouched relaxed position. If only the rest of the Nein could see you now. They’d go crazy…

Time
[Disclaimer: I’m currently slightly more than halfway through the c2 finale and I’m going to try and avoid spoilers since well, there’s still like 3hrs of content to get spoiled on.  Will likely crosspost to my ao3]
“Time, it takes time, not days or weeks or years.  Time.”
Caleb Widogast was right, though to be precise it takes 100 consecutive days of inscribing a teleportation circle in the same place to make it permanent.  Nicodranas was the first teleportation circle Essek Thelyss finished.  100 days of pounding sun and coastal heat felt fitting to start his time.  He had his trepidations about better acquainting himself with Yussa, less so with Ms. Lavorre.  The Nein asked why he needed to make a teleportation circle in Nicodranas, they already had access to Tidepeak Tower’s.  ‘Yes, however, we will not have to give anyone advance notice to use our own.’
Jester made something of a habit of bringing him a new parasol or sunhat each time she visited, even brought him tinted glasses she found once.  If he knew she was coming he’d make sure to wear one of them.
Each time he ran out of chalk he’d wrap himself in illusion and teleport himself to Zadash.  Meanwhile, the stores in his towers grew dust-laden, his absence from the Dynasty more suspicious, and he bought his chalk from Enchanter Sol.  The Mighty Nein were a family, regardless of any distance, and he had the means to make distance mean nothing.  So Essek Thelyss carried on.  And on the hundredth day, he stepped into a circle in Nicodranas and stepped out in the Blooming Grove.
He was invited in for tea, as expected, and accepted as was polite.  The next day he found the spot behind the temple where the grass had been flattened by the circle delivering him and started his next hundred days.  He ‘compensated’ for his intrusion with his floating meditative guard each night.  Caduceus seemed to pick up on what he was doing faster than Jester had, by a thin margin.  The remaining Clay children would poke their noses in once and a while, curious about their drow visitor they’d only met briefly before but they remembered him helping garden after Ikithon set the temple ablaze.  They would offer him a plate at meals, he insisted on using his own rations in a strange dance of hospitality and being a polite guest.
At one point, after finishing the day’s circle he considered venturing through the Savalirwood to Glory Run Road, find Mollymauk’s grave.  But it felt disrespectful to Kingsley somehow in a way he couldn’t articulate.  If he were to be more dramatic it felt like an invasion of privacy to the rest of the Nein as a whole, intruding on a moment on a place where they were unknowing adversaries.  So he kept inscribing circles in the grass and sometimes he found fresh chalk in his component pouch.  On occasion, Caduceus found saplings and cuttings of Xorhasian plants on his windowsill.
On the hundredth day he stepped into the circle in the Blooming Grove and came out under Caduceus’s tree in the Xorhaus.  He was far more careful with this one.  The Xorhaus was sparsely used, bordering on abandoned at this point, more than ready for the Nein to inhabit it once again.  Beauregard, oft accompanied by Yasha, used it the most for when they visited Rosohna on Cobalt Soul business.  The Bright Queen had been more than amenable to working with the Soul once she knew they were dismantling the organization that had stolen the beacons.
Though it took three days before Beau realized he was working on making a circle on the roof, pruning away his extra time by trying to tame the garden, clad in his rose-patterned gardening gloves, what with his lackluster previous experience.  She offered to go bring him chalk from his towers, anything else he might need that he’d left behind when he was posted in Eiselcross.  He accepted the offer, to eschew suspicion, asking for some simple components that filled any wizard’s pouch.  Sooner than later, soon enough Beau couldn’t knock the truth out of him (not that she needed to do that or would, he was growing increasingly susceptible to disappointed stares from his friends) he stepped into the circle in Rosohna and stepped out in Rexxentrum.
His skin crawled and felt like it would slough off with each passing day.  He wasn’t so bold at this point to attempt and make a circle on Soltryce’s grounds but he did take pleasure in chipping away the next hundred days in the courtyard of Trent Ikithon’s now abandoned tower.  It was a joy, absolutely cathartic tearing apart what little remained hidden away of the bastard’s stores.  The most valuable and precious artifacts and components were hidden in ways only an archmage would even know about or know how to unlock.  Malicious clumsiness might have gotten him to break an important, now inert, magical tool or two as he rummaged through the tower for chalk.
Though one day, he noticed an owl perched in a tree, watch him for an hour, disappear for a few minutes, reappear, so on and so forth for the whole day.  He had a good idea who the owl was but she never watched him again after that.  If she wanted to know what he was doing here, fine.  It wasn’t like either could rat out the other without drawing unwanted attention to them both.  So on the hundredth day, what little remained of Trent Ikithon’s personal study even more thoroughly destroyed, he stepped into the circle in Rosohna and stepped out.
Essek chipped away at the for now final circle under the watchful light of Pelor.  Passively, the part of him that absorbed every ounce of knowledge, regardless if he cared or not, wondered what the connection may be between whatever the Luxon is and the Dawnfather.  Just a fun little thought experiment to occupy him while he worked through the next hundred days.
By the end of Brussendar, with Highsummer fast approaching, he’d decided that he ought to have brought at least one of Jester’s hats.  Though more importantly he’d decided that the thought was silly and any connection between the two deities must be entirely aesthetic.  Nothing he didn’t already know but what else can a wizard do but overthink?
It wasn’t the same level of festivities he’d heard about with Harvest’s Close but Highsummer seemed to be the close second in Blumenthal.  He sat, disguised in the shade of an oak probably as old as he was and simply watched from afar.  Somewhere in the crowd, he saw a flash of copper.  Tried not to think to much of it.  Red hair seemed slightly more common in this corner of the empire.  He caught the sweeping arc of a long, striped scarf being tossed over a shoulder.  A leather coat dusting at the ground (though he had looked so good in purple).
Caleb Widogast stepped out of the crowd and sat under the oak with him, “I suppose a criminal always returns to the scene of the crime.” “I suppose I have,” Essek stared at his feet. Caleb offered him some sort of sweet roll wrapped in paper, “I was not talking about you.” He ignored the comment, “How long has it been?  Since we last spoke.” “Four hundred and eighty-six days.  About a year and a half to be informal,” he just set down the roll next to his hand when he didn’t move to take it. “I keep thinking one day it will have been enough time.” “Looking for the specific number will drive you mad.  Are you just going to keep making circles across Wildemount until you feel that you’ve atoned?” Essek took the roll but only held it,  “I know that I cannot make up for everything.  What are you doing here, anyways?” “I have been trying to convince myself to visit.  Maybe try to pay my respects if I can stomach it.  The others had already told me what you were doing, but Astrid told me where you were going.  Figured now was good a time as any,” his expression darkened, the reality beyond the afterglow of a hard-won victory whispering into both their ears. “I-,” Essek started. “Did you know I was from here before you picked it or did you just want to taunt Rexxentrum by hiding in their breadbasket for a while?” Caleb stared him down. “I knew.” “Alright then.” “I hope I have not intruded in some way by coming here.” “I suppose we were both curious about the echo.  It’s right up your alley, prodigious dunamancer and whatnot,” Caleb glanced back up at the revelers before turning his attention back to him “I would not discount your own skill, you’ve picked up dunamancy quite quickly and with a level of skill I have rarely seen.”  Maybe they can just talk about magic. “Danke.” There was an uncomfortable pause in the conversation.
“When do you think-?” Essek tried asking. “I don’t.  I will not pretend to know when enough time will have passed for the past not to hurt us anymore, Essek.  And counting it in teleportation circles will not make it go any faster,” he said, though with the crushing sadness to his eyes of a man who wished he were wrong. “I am trying to make it easier for us to see each other,” he said with easy authority. “It is much easier to see each other when we don’t run off to the four corners,” Caleb added on with a tired chuckle. “What are you implying?”  Something caught between excitement and unease hit him. “I can stay.  Help you finish the circle here, we can leave, make another.  As many circles as we want.  We can have the continent at our fingertips.  Maybe even go back to what remains of Aeor in Eiselcross.  Devexian couldn’t have been the only mechanical inhabitant.  For all we know there is a city of automatons underneath the ice now,” Caleb got more excited and dreamy as he went on, the unbridled excitement of a mage faced with knowledge. “That sounds...nice...,” Essek trailed off, trying to sound as neutral as he could manage. “Do you want that, Essek?”
It felt like the word was tearing its way out of him, “Yes.”
