There's currently a sale on all of Jupiter's games on the Nintendo eShop- which is primarily Picross S1 through 8, plus Kemono Friends, Overlord, and Sega-themed Picross, but there's also this game, confusingly titled "Picross X: Picbits vs Uzboross"

It has a demo out so I decided to check it out, and to my delight, I found out this was Speed Picross. The conceit is that you control a horde of rabbit creatures called "Picbits" that are trying to escape a giant worm called the "Uzboross", and you get more speed for your Picbits to escape and eventually fight the Uzboross by solving as many 5x5 picross puzzles as you can within a set amount of time.

It's the exact twist on picross that I needed to reignite my love for them, because as simple as 5x5 puzzles area, having to solve as many as you can, as fast as you can, is a new kind of engagement. Plus, it works in a ton of goofy little gimmicks, like giving you a fully filled-in 5x5 grid that you need to remove block from to get the answer, or placing bombs that need to be diffused by solving every square in the same row and column as the bomb.

If you're into picross, at the very least, I'd recommend picking up the demo and giving that a whirl.

[Review] Picross S: Mega Drive & Master System Edition (NS)

Jupiter strikes again.

I’ve mentioned before that stylus controls are my favourite way to play Picross. Well, buttons were the way it was done for years and now they’re the done thing again. It’s fine. Anyway, Jupiter has been pumping out Picross games for Switch consistently now, including spinoffs themed around anime properties and such. This time they’ve got Sega on board to make puzzles based around their 8- and 16-bit classics. Well, some of them.

The problem with picking nostalgic Sega properties nowadays is that Sega doesn’t own them all anymore. You won’t see Ecco the Dolphin or Toejam & Earl in this collection, for example. Surprisingly there’s not much Sonic on the other hand; they try to spread it around and include some more obscure stuff. Like a bunch of puzzles based on the Japan-exclusive Tant-R series...? So the selection is a bit uneven. Lots of close-ups of faces from brawlers, RPGs, and Gain Ground...

Anyway, subject matter aside, I can see how far Jupiter have come. This is one of the latest of their Picross titles, and having skipped all the S releases I’m impressed by the options that have trickled in; lots of customisation. They’re still doing that thing I dislike where the Mega Picross mode (a harder version with tweaked rules) just duplicates all the pixel art from the normal Picross puzzles. But I still did them all anyway. Micross (a larger picture composed of many smaller sub-puzzles) has at this point been swapped out for the slightly different Clip Picross, and colour puzzles, having long been a popular variant in independent Picross games, are now included as an extra mode. Uniquely in post-DS Jupiter games, the solutions to the colour puzzles are animated!

All up this is great value: 150 puzzles up to 20x15, 150 Mega Picross, 150 of various sizes under Clip Picross, and 30 Colour, with a decent spread of Sega properties represented. This may be the first time the names of the original characters of Golden Axe III have been romanised in a game as well... Plus I was quite challenged by some of these configurations, which isn’t always the case with the indie ones. There may not be much in the way of bells and whistles in their straightforward presentation, but Jupiter sure can make a solid nonogram game. Not a bad way to spend 28.5 hours while still recovering from my weird illness...

Game 18: PICROSS S GENESIS & Master System edition (Feb 2023) 💖

Picross has been a really neat puzzle game to get into. It tickles the brain the same way Sudoku or crosswords do, but with math placement. It makes neat little shapes and drawings as you fill in the squares, and gives you a nice little sense of accomplishment when you get to see the pictures move a bit too. But mostly Picross is just a fun game that helps clear your mind, and Picross S GENESIS & Master System Edition is the best version of that fun.

I can't express just how blown away I was by the demo for this game alone. With the additional new modes like Clip Picross and Color Picross it really feels like Sega Picross just understands what makes Picross so fun, and what new ways such a mechanic can improve it's gameplay on. This game just has so many improvements to the hint systems, tutorials, and gameplay that this would make a great starting point for any puzzle fan wanting to try a Picross game. Add in the additional star system to reward veteran players for playing the game well, and new modes just caters to any puzzle fan out there.

The game is absolutely stacked with a huge amount of puzzles to chose from. Not only are the majority of these puzzles not locked by anything, but you also don't need to do them all to be reward for the work you do. This means that doing any puzzles in regular, mega, or color picross will give you a clip picross to work with. These Clip picrosses are often smaller picross puzzles that create a small picture to help an even bigger picture come to life. While regular picross is still as fun as it usually is, being able to break it up with some mega picross or color picross puzzles helps the overall game from becoming too stale. As well, the new featured color picross is perhaps this games main selling point. While most picross puzzles require you to use simple math placement to figure out where to place your next block, color picross also uses various colors to help construct your picture. Sometimes the colors can help immensely or provide to make the puzzle more challenging, but always giving you a new way to play and figure out picross. Attach to this we have a very slick interface with a lot of wonderful sound effects and a nice assortment of Sega music. Rounding everything out, each picross is entirely different through out giving you an entirely new picture aside from regular and big picrosses as they share the same gallery.

Really I couldn't ask for anything more from a picross game, and Picross S: Genesis & Master System Edition really provides for that charming pick up and play attitude like no other picross before it. While there could have been more pictures for mega picross or a larger sound track of Sega's works, there really isn't much more I could have asked for from this game. Sega picross gives far too much from it's gameplay alone, and it's pricing makes it far and above worth your time. There really isn't a better puzzle game that's under 10$ that I could think of.

Today has been a bit of a day tbh but as well as buying my mum a phone I'm doing a sort of trial with an s23 ultra to see if I like it.

I asked the customer support about their return policy and just not liking the phone is a valid reason to return it so I have 2 weeks to see what I think. They'll just accept the return with no fuss for a full cash refund. No store credit or any such nonsense xD

My first thoughs so far is that phones haven't really changed much since my last phone the note 10 plus. Like it's a little faster, the battery is a bit bigger, and the camera is better but that kinda seems to be it at this point.

The s-pen is supposed to be more responsive but I pretty much exclusively use my phones pen to play picross xD If I ever try to get into art again I'd use my s7 tablet just for the bigger screen so that's not too important to me.

#I am pissed that I once again have to start my picross save over again T_T #I like that the app doesn't make me sign up for an account or anything but i'd love a data backup system so I can move my save to new phone #It's certainly not worth the £600 so far xD #Maybe I'm just massively grumpy from everything that's gone on today and I'll feel better about it in a few days xD

Do you think you have a type of character you gravitate towards? prickly, maybe. in general muses that allow me to explore… ewan is more outgoing than i will ever be, but lets himself feel petty or jealous. hector is brash, but struggling with an uncomfortable and unexpected weight on his shoulders. azama invites conflict like he needs it to breathe, while ive typically been averse to conflict. florina is timid but trying to grow stronger for her friends (and herself, she comes to realize). henry is… an oddball, idk how to describe what draws me to writing him. change of pace maybe? requires thinking outside the box with his unique worldview. i dont tend toward angst but matthew is a good output for it if im feelin it haha.

What do you believe you enjoy writing the most? i think i like. when threads start to come together. yknow in stories when you can start referring to things that have happened? and you're like "woah wait i know what that's referring to!!"

why does miku logic paint s sometimes freeze when i enter/exit a puzzle it's literally just picross this shit should run flawlessly on a toaster

#wait oh god my switch pro controller's right joystick has slight drift and for some reason it controls my mouse cursor when its #plugged into my computer so my cursor is slowly inching to the left without me touching it. Scary
