The Homeric was part of the war reparations package that came to Great Britain as a result of the 1919 Treaty of Versailles.
Originally intended to be named as Columbus by her German builders, she instead wound up going to the White Star Line in 1922. They promptly renamed her as Homeric.
The Homeric rounded out White Star's 'Big Three' express service between Southampton, Cherbourg and New York. Her regular schedule called for a Wednesday departure from the Hampshire port, with arrival in New York the following Tuesday.
Eastbound, the Homeric typically departed from Manhattan on a Saturday, and arrived back into Southampton on the following Friday. She would then begin another westbound crossing on Wednesday.
She was smaller and slower than either of her illustrious running mates, the Majestic and the Olympic. Truth be told, she struggled to maintain a reliable schedule at all. From 1932 onwards, she was relegated to full time cruising duties...
