Popcorn Sutton- A scrawny, long-bearded mountain man with a foul mouth and a passing acquaintance with copper tubing and kettles, Marvin "Popcorn" Sutton seemed the embodiment of moonshiners of yore. Popcorn was a legend, the ultimate Bootlegger and maker of Moonshine likker. He was born Marvin Sutton; folks knew him as Popcorn. The story is that Marvin was in a bar and became agitated with a popcorn vending machine. He attacked the machine with a pool cue. I don’t know who won that fight, but thereafter he was no longer Marvin, he was Popcorn. Brought up in rural Cocke County, Tenn., identified as one of four "moonshine capitals of the world" in the corn-whiskey history "Mountain Spirits," Mr. Sutton learned the family trade from his father.
The practice goes back to the Scots-Irish, who brought it to the New World, and it wasn't illegal until after the Civil War, says Dan Pierce, chairman of the history department at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. "This is something that legitimately is an expression of the culture of this region," Mr. Pierce says. Like his forebears, Mr. Sutton had brushes with the law, and was first convicted of selling untaxed liquor in the early 1970s. He mostly kept out of trouble after that, though friends say his nickname came from an unfortunate encounter with a balky barroom popcorn machine. But he was well known as a distiller around his native Parrottsville.
He was a familiar figure at the Misty Mountain Ranch Bed & Breakfast in nearby Maggie Valley, N.C., wearing faded overalls and with a back stooped, he said, from decades of humping bags of sugar into the hills. He picked the banjo and serenaded guests on the inn's porch. He helped decorate the $155-a-night Moonshiner suite at the inn with some still hardware. Mr. Sutton put a modern spin on his vocation, appearing in documentaries and even penning an autobiography, "Me and My Likker." Souvenir shops in Maggie Valley sold his video, "The Last Run of Likker I'll Ever Make," and even clocks with his image on them. Other moonshiners have gone legit and cashed in; a former Nascar driver and moonshiner now offers Junior Johnson's Midnight Moon in Southern liquor stores. But Mr. Sutton insisted on earning a living the old-fashioned way, and in 2007, agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives busted him with 850 gallons of moonshine, stored in an old school bus on his property. He was convicted in 2008 and was due to report to prison Friday and he was going to have to spend time in prison. For a mountain man, death was a better alternative. On March, 2009, Popcorn ended his life, rather than go to a federal prison. Instead, facing the verdict and ill health, he was found dead by Ms. Sutton at the age of 62 on Monday, and authorities suspect carbon-monoxide poisoning.
Going out like he lived, his epitaph read: “Marvin Popcorn Sutton / Ex-Moonshiner / October 5, 1946 / March 16, 2009 Popcorn Said f***k you.” I bleeped the last word! Ms. Sutton discovered her husband in his green Ford Fairlane. "He called it his three-jug car," she told the AP, "because he gave three jugs of liquor for it."

Backstory: Raised by her mother (Naomi) in a small apartment in New Jersey, Hosanna decided to move to England to be with her father (Moses). Hosanna didn't know much about her father, the only real information she had on him was, he wrestled for a living, and had once teamed with Damo Lucifarian. Hosanna lived with her dad while in England, and he taught her everything he knew about wrestling. Halloween story
It is the spooky time of year. Have a short story. 875 words.
TW: death, jail
The police arrived at my front door brandishing a warrant for my arrest. I hadn’t the foggiest idea as to what is going on. They forcibly grab me, thrusting my hands behind my back as they wrap handcuffs behind my wrists and shove me into the back of the Sheriff’s vehicle. Photographed and fingerprinted, I am held in the county jail, forced to wear the regulation orange jumpsuit.
My family obtains an attorney, who sits across from me in the small room. Lights glaring too brightly on my uncomfortable figure as I lean over the empty table. My back hurts from the prison bed, the chair isn’t helping me either. The only sound in the room is the clatter of the metal handcuffs on my wrists banging against the top of the table every time I move my hands. My legal representative finally enters the room. He introduces himself, taking his seat across from me after shaking my hand.
“So what the hell is going on?” I beg him for answers, my throat dry, eyes red rimmed and swollen from my nonstop crying since I arrived.
Attorney Bob flips open the clasps of his briefcase and pulls out a folder with my name written at the top. His look is serious as he slides a small stack of papers in front of me.
“You are accused of Involuntary Manslaughter.” He answers dryly.
“I didn’t kill anyone. Hell, I haven’t left my property for two weeks. Since this Covid crap, I don’t leave my house unless it is to get food or necessities. I stay home, mind my own business. I hardly talk to the neighbors. I’ve been gardening and hacking down weeds and small trees growing by the lake. Killing weeds is not murder!” My voice becomes louder and louder. I’m nearly shouting as I finish my rant. The door opens and a guard looks at me with a sour face, his billyclub tapping his palm. I swallow down my ire and attempt to relax.
“You are not being tried for murder. There is no intention or malice in your actions, however you are being charged with acting recklessly and without regard to the safety of others. The police have sufficient evidence in their custody proving there was a death on your property 14 days ago.”
“Hold it! I’ve been working in my back yard for over a month. I have been going out there almost every day to remove weeds and junk.” I bang my hands on the table, the handcuffs making the noise noticeably louder. “I never saw a dead body lying anywhere.”
“No, by the time you arrived it was no longer obvious.” Attorney Bob says matter of factly, “The police were first notified of a missing person. Through electronic searches and triangulation, they located the car keys of said missing person, then they found evidence of the deceased.”
“Only car keys?” Your mind fumbles with this. You saw no body, not clothes, no car keys. Who would die and leave keys alone? This makes no sense to you.
“Here, let me inform you what the prosecuting attorney will present at the trial.” Attorney Bob grabs several papers, setting a copy in front of you to read for yourself.

The area at the scene discloses multiple small trees cut off between 7” and 12” from the ground in an area surrounding the pond ranging from 4’ to 10’ from the waters edge and surrounding the pond for approximately 75’. There are several Bald Cypress trees approximately 30’ apart from each other within this area. The trunks range from 14” to 24”, age of trees approximately 20 years. The is an extensive number of “knees” in and out of the water surrounding the trees. There is no artificial light source, rural area.
Mr. Johnson, having legal permits in his possession, was hunting for invasive creatures. He was acting legally and within the scope of the law. Evidence shows he fell, becoming impaled upon a 10” cut tree jutting from the ground which pierced his heart. He was killed instantly. Refer to Exhibit D, vial containing residual remains/dust and his vehicle keys, labeled Exhibit C.”
You look up at your attorney in shock. “Wait. Dust?”
“Of course. Being a vampire is not illegal in this state. They are permitted to hunt invasive and overgrown wildlife for feeding purposes. They live quite happily alongside the human population these days. However, your negligence killed him and with the rising of the sun, he collapsed to dust. It is extremely incriminating. They have an air-tight case against you.”
“There are ordinances regarding the maintenance of property in this county you have violated by leaving these dangerous rooted spikes sticking out of the ground. Had it not been Mr. Johnson, it could have been anyone, perhaps one of your grandchildren or your husband could trip over a root or cypress knee, then falling and impaling themselves on several of the wooden stakes you left in the yard. Even if you plead guilty to the ordinance violation, you are still guilty of a federal offense. They do like to keep information regarding our supernatural neighbors quiet, so I hope they are willing to bargain.”

The story

Perse was raised primarily by her grandfather. Her mother committed suicide when she was five and her father was typically too busy for her and when he was around he had a tendency to be abusive. This manifested both verbally as well as locking her in a dark closet or the basement.
Her grandfather was an army medic in the Korean War and Perse grew up learning from him. He took her camping and hunting and taught her first aid, basic survival, and how to shoot. They spent a lot of time at the local veteran center and when she was older Perse worked there for a while.
Perse had not intention of being a deputy and actually is very anti-cop. She had graduated with good grades and had taken a few years off to travel, when she returned she began to go to university to study to become a veterinarian. All of this was funded by her grandfather who passed from a stroke (she wears a shotgun shell full of his ashes on a chain around her neck). He left all of his money to her in his will but her father stole it. She tried to continue to work herself through college but eventually dropped out and worked various odd jobs to get by. Her father was diagnosed with late stage liver cancer and given less than a year to live, she decided to join the law enforcement in an attempt to suck up to him in hopes of getting her grandfather’s money back. She moved to a county neighboring Hope County and joined the towns police force, she was then dragged into the madness as seen in the game.

Ten people were shot dead and three others wounded in a “racially motivated” mass shooting at a Buffalo supermarket on Saturday, May 14. Law enforcement identified the shooter as Payton Gendron, 18, who drove from 'hours away' in Conklin, New York, to the Tops market on Jefferson Avenue. The shooting took place in a predominantly Black neighborhood.
Eleven of the victims were Black and two of them were White. “We are investigating this incident as both a hate crime and a case of racially-motivated violent extremism,” said Stephen Belongia, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Buffalo field office said during a press conference. Erie County Sheriff John Garcia said, "This was pure evil. It was a straight-up racially motivated hate crime."
Gendron arrived at the market at around 2:30 pm. He “was very heavily armed. He had tactical gear on. He had a tactical helmet on,” Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said. He confirmed that Gendron even had a camera to livestream the shooting.
The gunman first opened fire in the parking lot, killing three people and injuring one. He then entered the store, where a longtime security guard and former Buffalo cop tried to stop him. However, the guard's bullet could not pierce the attacker's armor. The shooter then shot the security guard dead.
After working his way through the rest of the store, Gendron was confronted by Buffalo cops, who talked him into surrendering. At one point, he had reportedly put his gun to his own neck. Erie County District Attorney John Flynn vowed to arraign the attacker on a charge of first-degree murder “within the hour". “I don’t want to give him any celebritism right now. I don’t want to do anything that puts any attention on him,” Flynn said.
In a statement on Twitter, Gov. Kathy Hochul said, "I am closely monitoring the shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo. We have offered assistance to local officials. If you are in Buffalo, please avoid the area and follow guidance from law enforcement and local officials."

Who are Payton Gendron's parents?
Gendron is the oldest of four children of Paul and Pamela Gendron, both of who are civil engineers working for the New York State Department of Transportation. According to neighbors, the family is upper middle class. "They have a really nice family," neighbor Nancy Santucci said. "They seem like regular people. In a million years I never would think that anyone from this neighborhood would drive to Buffalo to carry out a racially motivated shooting."
Santucci said that the suspect Gendron graduated from Susquehanna Valley High School last year. He recalled how there was a big party on the family home's lawn, decorated with balloons. Santucci said Gendron brought home a human-size Brontosaurs that he had made for a school project.
According to Paul's Facebook profile, he studied at Rutgers University—New Brunswick, and went to Madison Central High School, Old Bridge, NJ. He lives in Conklin, New York and is from Old Bridge, New Jersey. His profile says that he has been married to Pamela since 2001. Pamela Newbury Gendron's social media profile, however, does not reveal much about her.
Officials revealed that Payton Gendron claimed in a 180-page diatribe that he was 'radicalized' on the internet while he was bored during the early pandemic days, not by people he has personally met. The self-described white supremacist and anti-Semite apparently learned through his 'research' that low white birth rates around the world are a 'crisis' that 'will ultimately result in the complete racial and cultural replacement of the European people.'
Talking about other racially motivated killings, Gendron said that he 'mostly agreed' with Brenton Harrison Tarrant, a man who live-streamed his attack which ultimately left 51 people attending a New Zealand mosque in March 2019 dead. Gendron reportedly began planning the attack in January. He chose the Tops Supermarket in Buffalo because “it has the highest black population percentage” by Zip code, and also because it was not very far away from his Southern Tier home, New York Post reported.
In one section of the manifesto, Gendron detailed his step-by-step plans for the day of the shooting. He also wrote about the corned beef hash he would eat for breakfast. He planned how he would drive to the supermarket, wear his body armor and carry his gun. He also wrote about live streaming the attack. Reportedly, the Buffalo massacre is the latest in a wave of mass shootings that were inspired by the Great Replacement theory -- a racist theory popular among white supremacists and the far-right.

"He was never married": The story of John H. Packard, the papermaker [Part 1]

On October 15, 1882, John Henry Packard was born in Plainfield, Massachusetts to a farmer named Cyrus Winfield Packard (1852-1924) and former teacher, and shirtwaste worker, named Dorothy "Dora" Ann Mills (1849-1895). [1] He was an only child at the time of this birth. Over the years, he would have three brothers: Joseph Winfield (1885-1910), Charles Edward (1887-1960), and Robert (1891-1956) [adopted in 1895 by the Mills family]. He would also have 3 sisters: Margaret (1884-1976), Marion Estelle (1889-1965), and Mabel Hattie (1892-1961).
By 1900, he would be living in Plainfield with his father, Cyrus, his siblings, and Clementine, the second wife of Cyrus. He would be a farm laborer. [2] By 1918, he would work at George W. Sears in Windsor, Massachusetts as a farmer. A few years later, in 1920, he would be a papermaker working at a papermill and said to be the brother-in-law of Edwin A. Jordan, head of the household. Through the 1920s, he would be living in Berkshire, Massachusetts, again working at Pioneer Mill. By 1930 he would be lodging in Dalton in the Pierce household and as inspector at the paper mill. In the later 1930s he would again be working at Pioneer Mill and likely by 1940 when he was a boarder in a household led by Mary L. Munch. He would continue to work at the same location through the 1940s. By 1950 he would still be living in Dalton and lodger in the Cassidy household, working as a sweeper at paper mill. [3]
The latter was confirmed by the act that in 1949, he was identified as living in Dalton. He would die on October 28, 1950 of cirrhosis of the liver and noted as single. [4] The same had been stated in the 1950 census which stated that he never married. There is more about John than this, however. Part of that involves where he lived. In 1918 he was seemingly still living in Plainfield, [5] perhaps near where he lived in 1900, on High Street. He would also live in these locations through the rest of his life, all in Dalton, Massachusetts, a town said to be a "transition town between the urban and rural portions of Berkshire County":

His obituary noted that he lived in Dalton for 32 years (1918-1950), and employed at Crane & Company and a member of the Dalton Congregational Church. In a weird twist of fate, he lived his last four months in Heath (where his brother Charles Edward was likely living), died at the Franklin County hospital in Greenfield, had his funeral at the Smith funeral home in Shelburne Falls, and was buried in West Hill Cemetery. Heath was a town that was a 30-40 miles away from Dalton, depending on which route you took, while Greenfield was even farther, at most fifty miles away and Shelburne Falls was 34-38 miles away depending on the route taken. However, where he is buried makes some sense. As it turns out, West Hill Cemetery, was only about 15 miles away.
Where John worked is now known as the Crane Museum of Papermaking, meant to care for, collect, and exhibit history of Crane Currency in order to "create an entertaining and educational experience of Crane Currency’s unique story" and papermaking itself. Since 1879, the Crane Company has supplied "banknote paper for United States currency." His role as a papermaker is akin to someone working at Westinghouse as an engineer in Pittsburgh as it is a similar situation in that one company was the main employer of the town. He worked at the Pioneer Mill, for which there as a parade in 1924, which he was likely a part of. That mill is at the current location of the Crane Museum, as confirmed by a nomination form for the National Registry for Historic Places in 1977. While he worked at the company, it was still run by the Crane family.
His time in Dalton is still generally a mystery, while historic photographs from the town's Historical Commission do not show him, local history books like A Bicentennial History of Dalton, Massachusetts 1784-1984 by Bernard A. Drew seem a bit expensive. Papermaking is said to be a big part of the Housatonic Valley region, even turning the southern Berkshires into "the center of the country’s paper industry" by the 1840s. It was also a key part of towns near Dalton, like Lee.
A deeper dive into the censuses reveals something: those he lived with also were listed as papermakers and undoubtedly also at Crane. For example, in 1920, he was living with Edwin A. Jordan, and his wife Fannie F., with both listed as papermakers. The household next to them, headed by Charles F. Dunham was the same way. On the same page John appears on, there are many others working at the paper mill. [7] While many of these families are have a typical nuclear family with a husband, wife, and children, some are households led by women, like those led by 34-year-old Bertha Greene, 47-year-old Elizebeth Marshall, or 31-year-old Rose Orten. The vast majority of those living there, on this one page, were born in Massachusetts, while some are from England, Pennsylvania, Ireland, Canada, or New York.
By 1930, the situation was relatively the same. The household John was staying in was headed by a man who was also an inspector at the papermill. In that same household, his wife, Harriet was a janitor, while a fellow 72-year-old Irish lodger, Rhoda Peterson, was also an inspector at the same place. On that page were listed an inspector at a woolen mill (46-year-old Patrick J. Enright), a sorter at the papermill (45-year-old Mary T. Gaffney), and a papermaker at the same place (44-year-old Cora M. Sherman). By 1940, he was the only person working at the papermill in the place he where he was lodging, but there were others nearby who worked there, like 35-year-old George A. Mongue and his 33-year-old wife Maguerite, 22-year-old James Fraley, 54-year-old Katherine Callahan, 61-year-old Frank J. Yates, and 68-year-old Catherine White. The same would be the case in 1950, when the head of the household, 63-year-old Frank Cassidy, was a guard at the paper mill, while Frank's 65-year-old daughter, Margaret, was a clerk there. On the same page is a 31-year-old sorter named Catherine Mongue an 18-year-old file clerk named Clara L. Brophy who were both listed as working at the papermill as well, along with a person who seemed to assemble parts at a woolen mill, 32-year-old Charles E. LaChurch.
My original aim of this post was propose that John may be gay since he lived his whole life and never married. As Michael J. Leclerc writes, as I noted in my post last month, "common signs of LGBTQ+ people are those who never married, or who married late in life or had no children" with the caveat the "these facts alone are not proof" and that additional signs are needed. However, it is hard to say for sure, even as Massachusetts is currently one of the most LGBTQ-friendly states, and has a large population of LGBTQ people today, especially in Suffolk, Hampshire and Franklin Counties. Dalton is in Berkshire County, with one of the lowest percentages of LGBTQ people. [8] Of course, these are current numbers, and there was no accounting in surveys of who was LGBTQ in Massachusetts during the time he lived there, from 1918 to 1950, so it is hard to know how many LGBTQ people were in Dalton during that period. After all, the so-called "getaway" for LGBTQ people in Western Massachusetts is Northampton, which is 36 to 42 miles away from Dalton, depending on the route taken. Only recently has the LGBT Chamber of Commerce expanded to Western Massachusetts, an area dubbed the "land of many rainbows" for older adults in 2017, as people move out of cities and to rural areas as prices in cities continue to climb. [9]
Before coming to a firm conclusion, I'd like to look at the censuses where he appeared again. Edwin A. Jordan, head of the household who lived with in 1920, died later that year. Edwin, who was married to a woman named Fannie as I noted earlier, was said to be John's brother-in-law, with no one else in the household. Something similar happened in 1930. In the census that year, Herbert Pierce, who headed the household where he lived, died in 1935. Pierce was married to Harriet Whitney. There were no other men in the household, as everyone else were women, either related to Herbert, his wife, or were lodgers. [10] By 1940 he was living in a household headed by a widowed landlady, Mary L. Munch. There were various single men in the household. This included a 37-year-old man named James Leland Fitzgibbons, who is noted as never marrying in the 1950 census, and also confirmed by the 1930 census. [11] There was also a 52-year-old man named Albert Cleo Maynard who was then-single. Albert would marry a woman named Mary Tubbs (1880-1964) in 1947, who would die in 1959, while Mary died many years later. By 1950, John was living in a household with no men apart from the head of the household, 62-year-old Frank Cassidy, who was married to a 58-year-old woman, Lidia E., and had a 25-year-old daughter named Margaret.

So, in sum, there is not enough information, at this current time, to say that John was gay. Instead, all we can say, with definite certainty, that John was unmarried his entire life and worked at a paper mill for most of that time, from 1918 to 1950, since he moved from place to place across Dalton during his time there. Otherwise, his life will remain a bit of a mystery, although not as much as brother who was killed by a train in Nebraska.
