This is a 16th Century painting called The Great Tower of Babel by Dutch artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder. It's currently in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
⁣⁣As a cat, I'm accepting of all religions and I do not critique their beliefs or ideologies. On the rare occasions when I mention any religious subject, I do so only from the innocent perspective of a cat. I mean no offense and I hope none is taken. I say this here since the subject of this painting is a tower mentioned in the Book of Genesis, from the Hebrew Torah and the Christian Old Testament.⁣✡️✝️☦️⁣
The story of the Tower of Babel is meant to explain why the people of the world speak different languages. God saw them building a tower to attest to their own greatness and He confused their language so they couldn't understand one another.💬 It was probably like being in a pub in Glasgow when everyone has already had a few pints.⁣🍺🍻⁣
Around that time in the same land was a great hunter named Nimrod, who was the great-grandson of Noah. The Book of Genesis does not connect him with the Tower, but a 1st Century historian named Flavius Josephus does. He wrote that Nimrod wanted to turn the people from God to be dependent on him instead. Instead of offering welfare payments and Section 8 Housing though, he directed them to build a tower too high for flood waters to reach, should God ever again decided to flood the earth.⁣🏗
⁣Mob mentality took over, so build they did. Then the Book of Genesis says that God confused their languages and scattered them all over the earth. Details of the scattering are not mentioned, but I imagine it would have been interesting to see.⁣💥
⁣In the painting, the main figure with the gang in the foreground is presumably Nimrod. There are some workers kneeling before him that he probably caught goofing off.⁣😬
⁣As with most of Bruegel's paintings, there are dozens of small figures in the background, seen from a high viewpoint with individuals or small groups all engaged in their own distinct activities. I could point out all the OSHA or Health and Safety violations, but IG places a word limit on my rambling presentations.

A Pieter Bruegel inspired sleeve for Nikolo last week. We haven't finished it yet so I wasn't going to share it but it's so weird and wonderful that I couldn't not! We're be adding shading to it in a couple of months to finish it off and add background textures. It's based on the seven sin piece by the illustrator Pieter Bruegel - check it out! It's crazy and I love that Nikolo wanted it as a sleeve. So unique. 🖤 #tattoo #tattoos #manchestertattoo #fleshtattoomanchester #manchesteruk #manchestertattoos #finelinetattoo  #manchesterart #manchesteruk #manchestertattoostudio #manchestertattoo #manchestertattoos #traditionaltattoo #manchestertattoist #manchesterartwork #art #engravingtattoos #engraving #pieterbruegel #pieterbruegeltheelder #pieterbruegelsevensins #dotworktattoo #finelinetattoo #patterntattoo #art #illustration #etching #illustrativetattoostyle — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/hEgAtKc

»Babel«
2021, colored pencil on paper
50 x 35cm
A commission, which I drew at the end of 2021. It is a higher view of the Tower of Babel, loosely based on Pieter Bruegel the Elder.
I Think it is a perfect parable. Where else does humanity want to go when we are already at the top? And can look down on our own failure and doom?

Posted @withregram • @artoutlaws Rembrandt van Rijn (1606 - 1669): Philosopher in Meditation, 1632, oil on oak panel, 28 x 34 cm, Musée du Louvre, Paris . . “Philosopher in Meditation” by Rembrandt depicts three figures in a partially vaulted interior that is dominated by a wooden spiral staircase. The architecture includes stone, brick and wood, with arched elements (window, vault, doors) that create an impression of monumentality. The most conspicuous figure is an old man seated at a table in front of a window, his head bowed and his hands folded in his lap. An old woman on the right is tending a fire in an open hearth. There is also a third figure of a woman standing in the stairs facing the viewer, but she is virtually invisible in the painting’s dark hue created by the aging of the varnish. While the traditional title, 'Philosopher in Meditation' has to a large extent been responsible for the painting's popularity, it is iconographically untenable. The painting shows none of the conspicuous attributes of scholarship or philosophy - books, globe, scientific instruments, etc. - and the presence of at least one other figure involved in domestic tasks does not fit in with the solitude associated with study and meditation. A plausible interpretation of the scene is Tobit and Anna waiting for the return of their only son, Tobias, a story derived from the Book of Tobit, one of Rembrandt's favorite Old Testament sources.. This is supported by an 18th-century source identifying a Rembrandt painting of exactly the same format representing a "Composition with Tobit and a winding stair." Rembrandt had already painted this scene in another version in 1630. . . . . #rembrandtvanrijn #renemagritte #johnconstable #johnatkinsongrimshaw #edvardmunch #paulklee #henrirousseau #giorgione #jacqueslouisdavid #pietmondrian #caspardavidfriedrich #camillepissarro #gustavecourbet #theodoregericault #marcelduchamp #pieterbruegel #artemisiagentileschi #titian #hieronymusbosch #wassilykandinsky #diegorivera #grantwood #elgreco #markrothko #janvaneyck #georgiaokeeffe #renemagritte #franciscogoya #georgesseurat #diegovelazquez #edwardhopper (at The Foreign Correspondents' Club, Hong Kong) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQEC--eD3P6/?utm_medium=tumblr
