This week, for my project visiting and documenting every neighborhood in NYC, I went to Pigtown in the heart of Brooklyn.
If you have never heard of Pigtown, that’s because it hasn’t been called that since the 60s when the name Wingate was reluctantly assigned to the neighborhood. Realtors preferred to list their apartments for rent in Wingate rather than Pigtown for obvious reasons. The name didn’t really catch on, so most people consider this neighborhood either Crown Heights, Prospect Lefferts or East Flatbush. Still, I’m calling it Pigtown.
It’s where Rudy Guliani grew up, where Patrick Scully instigated a fight with a pack of 100 pigs under the mistaken assumption that they were dogs, and where Thomas “The Terror of Pigtown” McCormick walked into a barbershop and ate two live canaries for no good reason.
Today, it’s home to the African Record Center and the hottest falafel in New York City.
If you want to see/read/hear more visit the link up above. The Neighborhoods is a free email newsletter that covers a different neighborhood in NYC each week.

A Study in Flannel (1 of 2)
“Hello, Wallflower.”
“Yes, I’m talking to you. Did you think no one had noticed you in here? Everyone’s been talking about you, but everyone gets talked about, their first time in Pigtown. Everyone wants to know, who’s that handsome young man going to be, sipping that beer all by himself against the wall?”
“If you really want to hide that blush, you shouldn’t turn away–just grow a better beard, Wallflower.”
“Wallflower, everyone can tell that you’re trying to. That’s why you’re here, isn’t it? Look at you–we all know what you want to be. Those jeans, those boots, that…*sigh* flannel shirt. Flannel, such a tired fabric, but it means so much to all of us here, I suppose. No one wants to hear The Beatles, but everyone knows the words when it come on. We all know what you want.”
“Don’t be coy with me–you know what this place is. I know how far the reputation of my bar spreads.”
“Oh, you just now noticed that facial hair of yours? I know I suggested you grow a beard, but that flush in your cheeks is too cute to hide just yet. Shame about the color though…”
“A mirror? Right over there, Wallflower. Go take a look?”
“Not too bad, eh? That mop makes a pretty good flat top, I have to say, and you’re filling out that flannel of yours nicely. How’s that cigar taste? Heh, looks like you hadn’t even noticed it. Big package in the front of those jeans daddy, you’re filling out nice and thick, just how we like them. Still, as handsome as you are, I’m afraid you just don’t quite fit our theme tonight.”
“Didn’t you notice? Second Friday of every month is the hoedown! Got dirty fucks coming from five counties to have some fun around here. Don’t worry, we can get you all fixed up here in a jiffy–won’t take much more than a few tweaks, and you’ll be feeling right at home.”
“Don’t shake your head at me! Don’t you understand the importance of theme nights? Honestly, it’s like why keep a calendar at all, if men can just show up and be whoever they want to be. Now hold still, Wallflower–let’s rip some seams.”

A Study in Flannel (2 of 2)
*RRRIIPPP*
“There we are! Right at the seam. Let me just tug this sleeve off–we’ll have you feeling more comfortable in no time, Wallflower.”
“The tattoos? Where do you think they came from, dumbass? Nice and trashy, just how I like my rednecks.”
“You don’t wanna be a redneck? Then I guess you should have looked at the calendar! Hear that everyone? Wallflower here didn’t want to a redneck but he didn’t even check the calendar!”
*Laughter*
“Now Wallflower. No one thinks they want to be a redneck. But trust me, once you go there, you’d be surprised how few of ‘em wanna go back. Now give me that other sleeve, let’s see what we can do here…”
*RRIPPPP”
“There we are–you’re looking better already, Wallflower. Look at those new sleeves of yours, all those tattoos…You’re gonna be a real sleazy fucker, ain’t ya? Now one last thing, Wallflower…”
*Pop..PopPop..Pop*
There we are-no more buttons on that shirt–just let that dirty, hairy bubba gut of yours hang out. Got some rings in those tits Wallflower! You’re kinkier than I thought. Oh? That feel good Bubba? You like having me play with those tit rings of yours? You know I get first go with every new boy, right? So lean in here, and shove some of that cigar smoke in my maw, you nasty fuck.”
“Fuck Bubba, that’s a nice mouth you got. Love the feel of that beard too–and damn fucker, a mullet? Whose 80’s fantasy did you come stumbling out of? Yeah, I see you grinning at yourself in the mirror–you do like it, don’t you? Just fucking admit it.”
“Yeah–that’s what I thought, Bubba. Now get down there and blow my rod–and then I’ll be turning you over to crowd here. Don’t think you’ll get away with being a wallflower the rest of the night–I think that pretty mouth of yours can look forward to being front and center.”

BALTIMORE -- A 30-year-old Baltimore man was sentenced to life plus 85 years for his role in a 2021 fatal shooting at a pizza shop in Pigtown, the Baltimore City State's Attorney's Office said.
Anthony Priester was convicted in July on eight counts, including first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, conspiracy and weapons charges, stemming from a shooting on March 26, 2021 in the 1100 block of Washington Boulevard.
Cameron Green was shot multiple times inside the Bella Roma Pizza shop there about 1:02 a.m. and pronounced dead a short time later. A second victim was shot in the leg and buttocks, wounds that were deemed non-life-threatening.
Officers recovered 63 shell casings, a laser scope, bullet fragments and multiple projectiles at the scene, prosecutors said.
According to prosecutors, five masked gunmen pulled up in a gray Honda Accord, exited the car in front of the restaurant and started opening fire. The shooters got back in the car and went eastbound on W. Cross Street.
Surveillance video showed Priester was driving the Honda Accord, prosecutors said.
Police executed a search and seizure warrant on Priester's Northeast Baltimore home on April 1, 2021 and he fled along with a woman. Officers pursued them until the pair eventually crashed at the intersection of Hamilton and Birchwood avenues, prosecutors said.
Priester and the woman were arrested. He was apprehended wearing the same jacket he was seen with in surveillance video of the shooting, prosecutors said.
A short time later, a woman in the 4100 block of Moravia Road called police to report a gun had been found in a puddle outside her home. Priester had led police through the area during the chase, prosecutors said.
The 9mm Beretta had an extended magazine with 23 rounds and one in the chamber, prosecutors said. The BPD Firearms Lab linked the gun with casings recovered at the scene of the shooting in Pigtown.
Investigators recovered a second extended magazine in Priester's home and the sneakers he was wearing on the night of the shooting, prosecutors said.
"This hefty sentence is a testament to the severity of Mr. Priester's violent actions and total disregard for human life. Our residents, our streets, our businesses, and our homes should never be subjected to gunfire and mayhem. I am thankful for the outcome of this case and I hope it provides some closure for the victims and their families," said State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby.
Priester is ineligible for parole during the first 15 years of his sentence.

Fashion Photoshoot Observation
27/03/2023
We got the chance to observe a working fashion shoot in action today as the FTPC and Fashion BA Graduate Photoshoots were happening on campus today. The above photographs are somewhat atrocious (sorry again for my phone camera quality) but do at least capture some of the logistics of the shoot. There was also a moving image shoot of all the collections in a second of the gallery, and I have included some footage of that below.
The photographer for the still image shoot was Darren Ryan, owner of Pigtown Media. He graduated from the photography course at LSAD in 2019.
Things I noticed during the shoot:
- wires and cables for the lights and equipment were taped down to the floor once setup was complete to try and reduce the trip hazard
- the director of each collection's shoot was also the designer, and many of them were very physically involved in directing the models (posing to show them how to position themselves, verbally and physically adjusting their poses, etc)
- the directors also tended to check in with the photographer often as well as take some quick pictures on their mobile phones. The directors all seemed to have clear visions as to what their photographed collections should look like
- the use of music during the shoot changed based on the director and definitely assisted in creating a tone and atmosphere for the models to work with
- music used in the video shoot also meant that models would move in relation to the music, keeping them roughly in sync with each other
- because they were not capturing live audio during the video shoot the director and photographers were able to call out instructions to the models while the cameras were rolling instead of stopping and redoing the take
-there was a fair amount of "hurry up and wait" with periods of very fast action followed by waiting for the next set of models to be free from their previous session to change and get on set for a new collection
- the makeup looks for each model had to be versatile as they largely did not have a chance to be adjusted between collections

Honor Dr. King: Protest to End Food Apartheid in Baltimore
Monday, January 17 - 2:00 p.m.
City Hall, Gay & Fayette Sts, Baltimore
Hosted by Peoples Power Assembly
WE ARE COMING TOGETHER TO FIGHT FOOD DESERTS
Residents in four major communities in Baltimore have been actively countering food deserts. Each community has suffered major supermarket closings and or curtailing community efforts to feed people directly through gardens or other means. Of course, the problem of affordable, healthy food is not confined to these four areas -- and we welcome every community.
These include: Pigtown/Washington Village; Sandtown-Matthew Henson - West Harlem Park - Bridgeview GreenLawn - Midtown Edmondson; Cherry Hill; and Oliver - Broadway/East - Johnson Square
The following demands are for discussion and are evolving based on community input.
-Create Opportunity Zones for these 4 areas -- if Under Armour can receive “opportunity zone” status and downtown businesses can receive financial benefits, why not Baltimore’s neighborhoods?
-Federal, State and City subsidized Markets. -Community control of vacant lots for people’s gardens. -Rollback food prices -- lower requirements to extend food stamp programs especially for seniors & low wage workers. -Provide special transportation for seniors, youth, disabled & poor residents or arrange delivery of food. -Train and hire residents from each affected area for union jobs. -Protect and guarantee union rights for all workers in subsidized supermarkets. -Form Community Action Committees in each area. -Create a Citywide Commission made up of representatives from affected communities to determine action. - Mayor & City Council call for national aid - Feed the people, not the Pentagon.
Initiated by: Peoples Power Assembly; Matthew Henson Neighborhood Association; Unemployed Workers Union

Good morning, Baltimore: Here's our favorite places for coffee
Coffee connoisseurs rejoice! A new Clever Real Estate study of America's best coffee cities found Baltimore City to be the best place for coffee.
With plenty of coffee shops in the city's many neighborhoods, variety is the name of the game. Whether you're looking for a coffee to start your day, a midday beer with friends, or a place to study late at night, there's a place for everyone.
Baltimore has 26 coffee shops for every 100,000 residents, according to Clever Real Estate. The study also found that a daily cup of coffee in Baltimore accounts for 1.4% of median annual income, which is 20% less than the national average of 1.7%.
To help you find your coffee corner, we've compiled a list of some of our favorite local spots across the city. Check them out below.
3 Bean Coffee Whether you're taking a stroll along the Waterfront Promenade or walking up the steps of Federal Hill, an iced coffee from 3 Bean Coffee is a great way to add a little pep to your step. While you're there, it's worth checking out the view from the top of the neighborhood's namesake.
coffee artifact Housed in a historic stone building along Union Avenue in the Hampden neighborhood, Artifact isn't just a solid place to grab a drink. It's also a good place to grab a bite to eat, whether it's a sweet pastry or a savory breakfast sandwich.
bird in hand This Charles Village accessory doubles as a bookcase, and it's a good one, too. Just off St. Paul Street in North Baltimore, Bird In Hand serves up a diverse menu in an airy academic setting befitting a cafe located on the doorstep of Johns Hopkins University.
the bun shop With its evening hours, the Bun Shop is a student favorite for studying at night with a hot drink and a steaming bun. This spacious yet cozy cafe has locations in Mount Vernon and uptown Towson.
common ground Small businesses may come and go in Hampden, but Common Ground has been serving sandwiches, baked goods, and coffee for 25 years. Last month, the store opened its spacious new location on Chestnut Avenue, just around the corner from its original location on "The Avenue."
Ceremony Coffee If you're like us, drinking coffee is a ritual. Sticking with that theme, why not check out Ceremony? This place has something for everyone, whether you prefer a cold beer or a latte. The best part is that it has four locations throughout the city.
Coffee Dear Leon Cafe Dear Leon is a stylish little shop in the heart of Canton. Their entire menu is baked in-house daily and they serve breakfast, lunch, and pastries in between. If you want the freshest produce, check out the baking schedule on the home page of their website.
Dovecote What is a dovecote? A "medieval birdhouse or a place where a harmonious group comes to settle," the store explains. An apt name, as it wouldn't be hard to nestle into this cozy and eclectically decorated cafe tucked away on a residential street in Reservoir Hill.
Good neighbor If you're looking for a spot for coffee, a flower arrangement, and a designer chair, Good Neighbor has you covered. After sipping a fluffy toast and enjoying the weather in their expansive outdoor area, check out Green Neighbor, a flower and plant shop behind the café.
sophomore coffee This cozy, stylish, semi-subterranean cafe is tucked away in the historic Old Goucher neighborhood in the heart of Baltimore. After sipping your espresso or chai, visit neighbors Sophomore's Fadensonnen, a beer garden and natural wine bar, or Chachi's, a rotisserie chicken place.
Ventilated Coffee Roasters Part of the Union Collective in Northwest Baltimore, Vent Cafe bills itself as more than just a roastery or cafe. "Vent is therapy. Vent is home. Vent is breakfast, community, experience, art, music," says the roaster on his website.
Zeke's Cafe Zeke's is a Baltimore-based roastery with coffee shops in Lauraville and Pigtown. You can also find them every Saturday at the 32nd Street Market in Waverly and in season at the Baltimore markets. Zeke's expanded with a roastery and cafeterias in D.C.
