Week 191: Sunday, May 28th, our first time attending the Pilipinx Cultural Night hosted by Kayumaggi, Stanford's Pilipino American Student Union, at Dinkelspiel Auditorium, 471 Lagunita Dr, Stanford. Lots of great dancing including tinikling! Afterwards we hung out on campus (Terran thought we were going camping because I said campus).

In an aspiring "Taking a Life into Your Own Hands" talk to an audience of Pilipinx STEM undergraduates and alumni, I used a quote by Meredith Grey that stated:
“Picture the life you dreamed of living. The person you pictured being with. Picture the job you dreamed you'd have. Are you living the life you envisioned for yourself? Are you who you wanted to be when you grew up? Open your eyes.”
I shared this quote mid-way through my talk, after I related how utilizing Eisenhower’s Urgent/Important Principle in my undergrad years helped me understand triaging in the field—prioritizing the need..that can swiftly exceed my capabilities and resources.
The rest of the quote follows:
“Take a good look around you. How's the view? Do you like what you see? Think back again to when you were little. Are you living the life you pictured for yourself? Or are you still dreaming of something even bigger?”
The field and busy emergency rooms are my arenas. I loved emergency medicine so much, that one day I even did it in heels lol. And what this audience didn’t know is that I was seen and treated in the very ER I was working in that morning, and I didn’t think it would be possible to deliver this message later in the day. But just as persistent and ever striving as this field of medicine is I was able to share this talk with those in COB 105 and Facebook Live.
I proceeded to tell them that the people in my life and I would've never imagined I’d be working in such a high-stress and critical field. But when I look back and connect the dots, it makes sense.. My twenties were as transitional as they could be. With that, they were also the most self-sacrificing. I wholeheartedly believed in my responsibility of “meeting people right where they were and getting them to where they needed to be.” I was constantly operating in a high-stress, post-traumatic, time-conscious, and life-saving mentality in my daily life outside of work.
In this picture, I had three jobs in emergency medicine amidst the pandemic. COVID-19 unruly showed me how much we could’ve inspired and changed medicine in and after the pandemic. And it was soul-crushing, and I couldn’t keep the burnout at bay any longer. Life post-pandemic has been retrograde-ish, in a way that I’m appreciating it by re-discovering life as it was when I was younger.
It has been a great honor in my life to learn how to care for others and treat them in arduous situations. Right now, I will be hanging up this first responder cape. I will let my certifications expire. And I will give back to this girl by silencing the calls of urgency, the hustle of trying to be there for everyone (but myself), and turning off the sirens and duties that would dictate her day. (Yes Steephh, I did it~)
So cheers to dreaming again 💛

PALAGI
Ikaw at ikaw.
Palagi.
Araw-araw.

From an early age, Asian artists are taught to erase ourselves and other people of color. But self-love puts us back in the picture. It's easy to beat ourselves up for centering/privileging whiteness—which I've done in my previous works. But it's not mutually exclusive to be proud of those works, and still recognize our failings and limitations that we need to work on. It's not wholly incumbent on creators of color to dismantle racist institutions on our own (the responsibility lies primarily with the white people who built them), but we can and should do our best to push back on these systems whenever possible. (Please don't repost or edit my work. Reblogs are always appreciated)

My main issue with Filipinx isn't that Filipinx Americans use Filipinx but that:
1. There is this claim that Filipino needs to be "decolonized" by changing it into Filipinx, which you know doesn't work. Because Filipinx is based upon the American constructs of language. And America colonized the Philippines. It's like changing one wet sock to another wet sock but now it's blue instead of purple. That is not to say that Filipinx won't benefit Filipinx American society because it will but it really won't do anything for Filipino society. In the Filipino setting, it's one term based on an ex-colonizer's language constructs exchanged with another term based on another ex-colonizer's language constructs.
2. The dictionary definition of Filipinx being used to encompass Filipinos from the Philippines as opposed to Filipnx Americans who have actual use of the term.
At the very least, Filipino has been a reclaimed term from centuries ago and it accompanied the Filipinos through their struggle for independence from both US & Spain and that's something important to the cultural and national identity of Filipinos, the changing of which by use of American language constructs under the guise of "decolonizing", insults our history, law and culture all the same.
